CHAPTER 10
Nick Fury walked into his office and headed directly into the safe located behind the SHIELD logo behind his desk. He punched in his code, allowed the retinal scanner to scan his eye and then pressed his hand into the pad that popped out of the wall. These were all security measures to secure the hard copies of documents and files that were usually redacted in the SHIELD database. In the safe, he kept a copy of both Clint and Natasha's files. The files contained information that could be used against his best agents; therefore, he had the only complete hard copies of the files. He reached in and grabbed Clint's file and set it on his desk before turning around and closing the safe. He picked up his phone and dialed some numbers. "Agent Hill, my office."
There was something going on and she was sure it had to do with the Avengers; Director Fury had left in a hurry muttering something about 'I will kill, this time I'm going to shoot him in the face.' He usually reserved those threats and that tone for one Tony Stark. Hill was thinking of asking the director what was going on and whether the Avengers would need a PR person to fix whatever mess was about to happen. The look on the Fury's face stopped her from asking, it was the same look he'd worn when Tony had gone through the wormhole with the bomb or whenever Barton or Romanoff had been listed as MIA, the look of worry. Fury could be seen as a badass most of the time, and no one would dare mess with him. He came off as unfeeling 99.9% of the time, but he did have a soft spot for the Avengers specially his two best agents. It didn't matter how many headaches they gave him, he always worried when they were in danger. She snapped out of her thoughts as her cell phone vibrated. "On my way" she responded to the Director.
"Take a seat." Fury said as Hill walked into his office. He'd been going over Clint's file as he waited for her to arrive at his office. Aside from Coulson, she was the only other agent to know classified information on Agent Barton. "I need you to tell me if you've heard about Agent Barton's brother, Barney."
"Sir, I don't understand. Is there something going on?" This was going to turn into a headache for all of them soon; she could feel it. The last time they'd dealt with Barney Barton, Clint had wound up in the med-bay for three weeks, and Romanoff had nearly killed everyone for not pulling her out of her mission. Barney had slipped their grasp and they hadn't heard from him since.
Nick sighed and looked up from Clint's file. "Agent Barton has been having some problems sleeping; nightmares have been plaguing him for quite a while now. Stark thought they were being produced by Loki, they were far too vivid to be normal nightmares. After putting Barton in a medically induced coma, they were able to realize that the nightmares were being triggered by someone or something."
Hill arched an eyebrow and began searching her brain for anything she could have recently heard or read about Barney Barton. "So is it Loki?"
"No. Thor assured us that the cell holding Loki in Asgard seals in his magic. He can't be the one doing this to Barton, while I was at the tower, Barton was able to recall someone from his past. Someone by the name of Garret Mikhail."
"Wait, did you say Garret Mikhail?" Maria asked as she pulled out her tablet and began sifting through files she had saved under 'Barney Barton'.
Fury nodded at Hill. "Yes, does that name seem familiar?"
Hill snorted "Familiar? It's in Barney's file. He is listed as one of Barney's last known accomplices. What I don't understand is how he can be doing this, is he an unregistered mutant, an alien, or an army test subject?"
"Find out, try and dig up everything you can about any mutant powers that are capable of doing this or if the army has done any research on the subject of entering people's dreams." He picked up his phone and was about to make a call, when another thought struck him. "Also place a SHIELD team near and around the tower. Make sure they look for any suspicious movement; any people that tend to hang out near the tower while not doing conducting any business within the area."
"You think they might decide to attack them physically?" Hill questioned as she began thinking of agents she could place to do surveillance around the Avengers tower.
Nick shook his head. "I don't know about that, but maybe whatever Mikhail is doing requires him to be within a certain distance from Agent Barton. We also need to know if he's still working with Clint's brother. If so, the idea of an attack on the Avengers is not too farfetched."
"Mmm, I could stay like this forever." Clint mumbled as he lay next to Tony. He wasn't as tired as he had been before the coma, but he couldn't deny he needed sleep. The knowledge that he might have to face Garret in his dreams kept him awake though, so he settled for relaxing next to his boyfriend.
Tony smiled and kissed Clint's temple. He had taken a short nap next to Clint before waking up and doing a bit of his own research. He was currently checking files Fury had sent over after he called him to tell him about the added security to the tower and the possible involvement of Clint's brother, he hadn't told Clint that last bit. It was hard to track someone though when they had grown up in a circus. The circus wasn't exactly known for having a perfect paper trail. "I could too, but I'm getting kind of hungry and you didn't eat much for lunch. I'm thinking spaghetti for dinner, what do you think?"
Clint chuckled and shook his head. "I'd love some spaghetti. Are you ordering it or are we attempting to make it?"
"I could order it, but you said 'we' so I'm alright with you helping me make dinner." He tilted Clint's head up and placed a soft kiss on his lips. "Mmm, maybe I should just have you for dinner."
"Down boy. What kind of date do you take me for?" He grinned and gave Tony a quick peck on the lips before getting up. "I'm going to go change. Why don't you get some of the ingredients ready?"
Tony grinned and nodded. "Alright, but you have to promise we'll get to play after dinner."
"Maybe, if I'm up to it." Clint smirked and left the room. He was walking down the hallway when he heard a voice. A look around revealed he was alone in the hallway.
Don't think it's over yet, Clint. My revenge is just beginning.
He collapsed on the floor gasping for breath as the tension he felt in his head left. "Jarvis, get Tony!" He gasped out as he sat in the hallway with his back against the wall, trying to get himself under control once more.
"Sir, Agent Barton requires your assistance in the hallway."
Tony was just getting the bag of spaghetti out when he heard Jarvis' message. He dropped what he had in his hand and ran out of his apartment. "Clint!" He yelled as he ran towards Clint who looked horribly pale. The fear in his eyes made Tony really nervous, "What happened?"
"Garret, in my head." Clint whispered. He wrapped his arms around Tony. This was a new development, so far, he had only had to deal with Garret's crap in his dreams, but this happened while he was awake. "He said his revenge was just beginning."
He put his arm under Clint's arm and helped him up maneuvering him back to his apartment and into his bed. A quick run to the kitchen and he was making Clint drink some water. "Jarvis please get Bruce. Don't tell him what happened, just that we need him to get here quick." Tony said, trying to keep his voice calm, although on the inside he was terrified and angry. How dare this bastard do this to Clint, he thought darkly before rushing back to his room. Clint was sitting on the bed, and almost jumped into Tony's arms.
"We have to find him." Clint said in a low voice as he clung to Tony. "I don't want him hurting you."
"He won't hurt me, just relax Clint. Bruce is on his way, he'll be able to tell us what's going on. We're also geniuses, so we will find a way to stop him from getting into your head." Tony reassured Clint. He placed a finger under his chin and tilted his head up so he was looking at him. "I promise I won't let anything happen to you."
