PART 10

Quinn couldn't get Rachel's last words out of her mind. Every time she tried to shut it out, it kept on creeping up on her. The words even haunted her dreams that she would wake up in the middle of night and felt so confused because for some reason she thought she was still in the auditorium. She didn't see much of Rachel in school for the next few days and she couldn't tell whether it was her that was doing the avoiding or it was Rachel. She understood if Rachel had been avoiding her, she understood if Rachel was angry at her, in fact she expected that, but she really didn't expect everything else that happened in the auditorium that day.

There was another Glee club meeting today and she didn't want to skip another one. Besides for now she would just feigned ignorance of everything that ever happened between them.

When she walked into the choir room, she did a quick scan and saw that Rachel wasn't there yet, so she quickly took a seat next to Mercedes. She overheard Mercedes telling Kurt about their performance to Mr. Schue the other day, where apparently Rachel was upset after that but refused to talk to anyone.

"So what happened exactly?" Kurt was trying to make sense of Mercedes' rambling.

Mercedes rolled her eyes, she felt that she had told the story too many times, "We just finished singing The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and I was sad because I was confused with … you know, my whole situation, but of course Rachel had to steal my thunder and be the one who's upset about … that's the thing, we don't even know what she has to be upset about."

"But technically weren't both of you stealing Mr. Schue's thunder," Kurt said sarcastically.

Before Mercedes managed to retort the statement, Rachel walked into the room and said loudly, "Mr. Schue, I have one last song that might be suitable for you and Miss Pillsbury. Can I sing it to you?"

Everyone was startled, including Mr. Schue, but Rachel looked so determined and he didn't have the heart to say no, "Yeah, go ahead Rachel, take the floor."

Everyone was quiet pretty instantly, all eager to hear what Rachel wanted to sing. There was something about her today that not even Santana was willing to ignore her or making stupid remarks. Rachel gave a short nod to Brad the piano man and the music started. Quinn was nervous to see Rachel standing there. Even though the auditorium scene was just a few days ago, she felt like she hadn't seen Rachel for a lot longer than that. She tried not to look because she didn't want Rachel to think that she was kind of anxious to see her, but then she realized that Rachel hadn't look at her at all.

Rachel stood in the middle of the choir room and started singing the first note, "I can't win, I can't reign, I will never win this game, without you, without you…"

The whole time Rachel was singing, she avoided Quinn's eyes the whole time. She was looking at everyone else but Quinn and for some reason it annoyed her very much.

But at the very last verse, her eyes finally darted to Quinn. "I am lost, I am vain, I will never be the same, without you, without you, without you."

But of course to Quinn's confusion, Rachel's eyes darted between her and the person who was sitting right in front of her, who was none other than Finn. Stupid tall Finn and his tallness that's almost blocking my view. Quinn couldn't explain this feeling that she was having, annoyance and jealousy with a bit of anger. Was that song for me? Was that song for Finn? But then why would I want the song to be for me because I don't want this … right? So wouldn't it be better if the song was for Finn?

She couldn't pay attention to everything else that happened after that. All she needed was to get away from that room, she needed to spend more time thinking on … something. As she was about to leave, she could hear Finn calling Rachel's name, and she just dashed out of the room and not even looked back.

Quinn's weekend was spent mostly in Bible studies and church. She wanted to stop thinking about Rachel, and Finn, and about Rachel and Finn together again. It really annoyed her that whenever she got a quiet moment, one of these thoughts would creep out on her. When she went back to school on Monday, the first person she bumped into was Mercedes who for some reason started the conversation by mentioning the names that she had been avoiding the whole weekend.

"So, Rachel and Finn are back together." Mercedes said it like it was a fact.

Quinn gritted her teeth, "and why are you telling me this?"

"No reason. It's just the only thing all of us have been talking about. There's not so much going on here, so you know, that seems like the only juicy topic."

No matter how much Quinn didn't want to know, curiosity killed the cat. "What makes you think that they're back together?" She couldn't help that the question came out full of anger. It was a good thing that the hallway became noisy with other people that Mercedes got distracted and didn't notice that Quinn was pretty much gripping her books tightly.

"Well, ever since Rachel sang that song to Finn, it's obvious how she feels about Finn. And then Tina saw them having dinner at Breadsticks on Saturday night and they were holding hands and everything."

"What 'everything'?" Quinn stared down Mercedes.

"I don't know," Mercedes finally felt Quinn's wrath.

"Were they kissing?"

"I don't know. I just told you what Tina told me." Suddenly all Mercedes wanted to do was to get as far away from Quinn as possible.

Quinn turned around in anger and stormed through the hallway. She only had one destination in mind.

She saw Rachel from afar. Rachel was walking alone and on her way to her classroom. So Quinn quicken her pace and when she finally got close enough, she pulled Rachel to nearest empty classroom.

"What the hell?" Rachel was annoyed with the sudden intrusion.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Quinn asked as she crossed her arms.

"What are you talking about?"

"What …" Quinn started to say something but decided to take a deep breath instead because she felt like screaming at Rachel's face and that wouldn't be a good idea. So she started pacing and trying to control her anger, but every time she tried to say something, she clamped down. She was trying to find the right words to say, but all she could come out with was just a glare. Rachel didn't know what she was supposed to do or say. She wanted to laugh at Quinn's behavior but she was still angry and annoyed with her. Rachel looked at her watch and her class was about to start. She decided to just leave Quinn to it but as she was about to walk out the door, Quinn finally stopped pacing and blurted the words out, "how could you say you love me one day and singing love song to Finn the next. And now you're back with him, holding hands and everything, when we've had this talk before that you deserve so much better than him. Urgh, what is wrong with you?" Quinn was breathing furiously by the end of the sentence.

Rachel just stood there staring at Quinn. At first she frowned at Quinn's outburst, then she got confused, but after a while, she started smiling. Quinn had calmed down by then and was confused with the smile.

"Why are you smiling?" Rachel's smile made her uncomfortable.

Rachel bit her lip as she tried to contain her smile but she couldn't control it. Her smile grew bigger and bigger.

"What?" Quinn was agitated now.

Before Rachel could say anything, they were interrupted by the door being opened by the teacher. "What are you two doing here? Go to your class!"

Quinn was sour the whole day, barking out at people that were on her way, so everybody knew to stay away. Except for Santana of course.

"Aww, I'm sorry Q, it looks like your Hobbit's back with Frankenteen. They sure do make a cute couple, as in they're so cute I want to barf kind of way," Santana ended it with a laughter which showed that she's not all that sorry.

As Santana walked away, Quinn threw the pom-pom that was in her locker. She was aiming at Santana's head but it didn't go far and just landed at her feet. She felt like a loser that couldn't even throw a pom-pom.

She thought of skipping Glee practice, she really didn't want to see Rachel and Finn being those lovey-dovey couple. Santana was right about one thing, they did want to make your barf. But for some reason her feet brought her to the choir room anyway. She took the seat on the first row, there was just a few people in there, so she opened her book to start reading. She ignored people who came in and they all knew how grumpy Quinn was today that nobody tried to strike up a conversation with her. She heard Rachel came in with Kurt and she fixed her eyes to the book even though none of the words made sense anymore. She could see from the corner her eyes that Rachel took a seat in the row just above her and to her left, and in that same instance she saw Finn came in and sat next to Rachel's left. She gripped the book tight that her knuckles were turning white.

"Finn, what are you doing?"

Quinn was straining her ears to hear the conversation while blocking out the rest of the noise.

"I just want to warm up your hands," he said jokingly. Quinn then saw at the corner of her eyes that Finn was holding Rachel's hands with his big hands.

"We've talked about this," Rachel's tone was serious and she moved her hands away.

"I'm sorry Rachel, I just don't understand. One minute you're singing that song to me and the next you said that you don't actually want us to get back together? It just doesn't make sense."

"I'm sorry you misinterpreted the song. It's not … it's not supposed to be that way."

"Then why did you go out to dinner with me."

"Because we're friends. We were just two friends having dinner."

Quinn could hear the loud huff coming off Finn and from the corner her eyes she could see that Finn was sad and annoyed and was looking the other way. She couldn't see Rachel that well, just her shoes. Quinn didn't understand it but for some reason she felt elated and couldn't contain her smile, and that was the smile that Rachel saw.
