Bruce was startled out of his sleep by Alfred who shook him with more force than usual. Bruce blinked and yawned, he noticed that the air felt colder than before and the sky already turned a little orange as the sun went down. Irritated, he wanted to ask why Alfred had awakened him so rough but he petrified at the sight of Alfred's facial expression. It was a mixture of panic and despair, something Bruce was not used to and he became instantly worried.
"What's wrong Alfred?" he asked as he looked around in search of danger. "It is Master Dick ... I can not find him. I looked everywhere, Master Bruce, but he seems to have disappeared without a trace!" he said desperately. Bruce shrugged and said in a naive tone "He's probably still hiding. He'll come out soon. The last time I saw him he was running inside, maybe he's still there?"
Alfred shook his head with a sad look, "I have searched the whole house and I called him multiple times. Normally he always comes to me immediately when I call his name and he has never done this before. He is nowhere to be found!"
Bruce sighed, he had no desire at the moment to go looking for Dick and he looked disinterested at Alfred, "And how long has he been hiding?"
The response of his butler shook him awake and he was instantly alert. "For three hours, sir."
Dick was yawning as he woke up; he had dozed off on the big and comfortable chair.
When he tried to climb into the old clock he had pressed a secret button. The old cuckoo clock had shifted and a secret elevator was revealed. he had stared in a daze at the elevator wondering where it would bring him. He curiously stepped in and the doors closed before he could think it over, and he felt how the elevator began to decline. When he got out he realized that he was no longer in de Manor, but in a big underground cave.
With an open mouth and with great admiration, he looked around. He saw a large screen and multiple computers. There were other things, but he really noticed one thing… the symbol of the Batman. Soon, he realized the truth and what he really had discovered. It was a very important secret, something almost no one else knew, except for a few exceptions and Dick had become one of those exceptions too.
With a smiling face, he ran excitedly through the cave. He still couldn't believe that his hero was so close to him all this time. It was a comforting feeling and he felt a sense of joy. Soon he was standing by the chair which stood in front of the largest screen and he climbed on it. When Dick finally sat down he noticed how tired he was after playing hide and seek and so he decided to stay put for a while. Without noticing he had fallen asleep and now that he was awake he felt more energetic. He wanted to explore the cave and discover exciting new things. But that plan couldn't go through abruptly, because the elevator came down.
In panic, he jumped off the chair and hid himself behind a rock some distance away but he made sure he still had a good view of the elevator. Tense, he looked who got out and his mouth dropped even further when he saw who it was…
"If I may ask, Master Bruce, what are you planning to do now?" Alfred asked as they walked into the Bat Cave. Bruce had thought of two possible situations when he heard how long Dick had been missing. One: he had hidden himself so well that they couldn't find him and he was probably in a place where he could not hear them calling. Or two: someone had found out that Dick stayed with them (that information could come from a corrupt cop) and they had taken him. At this time, Bruce assumes the worst of the two options… Dick has been kidnapped.
What they did not know is that Dick was close by and that he followed everything. Bruce walked into a separate room and Dick couldn't see him anymore, so he turned his attention to Alfred who looked desperate. And that's how Alfred felt, desperate, anxious and guilty.
Dick wanted to come out of his hiding spot because he felt also guilty after seeing the look on Alfred's face. He now understood that he had scared Alfred because he must have been away for awhile. He was about to leave his spot but insteed he stayed; he sat there shocked and motionless with big eyes when Bruce came into his view again.
Bruce was indeed back again but not as Bruce Wayne, but as Batman. For a moment Dick had felt very stupid. It was logical that if the entrance to the Bat Cave was located in Wayne manor and that it was practically under Wayne Manor, that he is Batman.
But that feeling was quickly overshadowed by a mix of all kinds of emotions. Bruce Wayne is Batman. His father is Batman! Dick did not realize that he had crawled out of his hiding place and that 'Batman' and Alfred now looked at him.
Bruce didn't wear his mask yet and Dick could clearly read his expression. He looked surprised at first, then shocked and it ended with a very angry look. Alfred was relieved, "Thank Heaven, you are all right Master Dick!" and he wanted to walk to him but Bruce raised his hand. Alfred stopped abruptly and looked questioningly aside. Bruce dropped his hand down again and slowly walked towards Dick which made him flinch. Dick anxiously looked with a questioning look for help at Alfred while Bruce came closer.
Dick began to back up until he couldn't go further and he let out a little high-pitched scream from his throat which echoed through the cave as his back hit the wall. Bruce stopped and looked at him, his scowl disappeared partly. Dick kept his eyes shut and had his face turned away from him, afraid of what would happen next. Bruce sighed, "You know that we have a problem." Dick nodded slowly, his eyes still closed, but he relaxed a little.
"Dick ...?" Bruce asked in a softer but at the same time a compelling tone as he knelt before him. "You have to understand that you need to keep this a secret, that is crucial for the existence of Batman."
Dick opened his eyes but made no eye contact, he listened carefully knowing that what was happening right now would affect him, just like the day his parents were murdered. Today his life would change forever. Bruce went on, "You can't tell anybody! Can you promise me you'll keep this a secret?" Dick looked up and he looked Bruce straight in the eye while he nodded determined and he quickly looked away again, breaking the first real contact he had with Bruce since they had met.
Bruce still looked doubtful, he asked a six year old boy to keep his greatest secret a secret. But he knew that he couldn't turn back time, what's done is done. He might even have to consider whether he still might have to keep Dick, what he'd rather still didn't want to.
Could he take the risk?
Actually, in a strange way he knew Dick would keep his mouth shut and that his secret would be safe with him. But if he would keep him, that would be wrong, because he would do it in order to protect his secret… the wrong reason.
Bruce was taken out of his 'trance' by Alfred who cleared his throat and then spoke, "I suggest that we go upstairs, I think everyone is in need of some rest. Of course we also need to eat, it's already late."
Dick walked quickly past Bruce toward the elevator; he wanted to leave as soon as possible. Alfred followed him and sent Bruce the classical 'we-will-talk-about- it- later-look'. Bruce sighed, there would be an inevitable conversation and Alfred would try to get his way. He was absolutely not looking forward to it, especially since Alfred was probably going to confront him with his feelings for Dick, something he hadn't really figured out himself yet...
Please, leave a review...maybe...if you feel like it of course...I don't wanna be pushy!
