The third year: Part I
James didn't know how Cousin did it, but he did. The proof was in his hands, had infect his very own cell phone, on of a kind to work around magic and muggles. His Aunt Hermione and Uncle George had tinkered with it until it had worked in both worlds. Of course now Uncle George was working on a whole line of them for all of James cousins.
He and Teddy had watched Remus and Lily's weekly video on YouTube over the summer and James couldn't wait to tell Remus about his new cell phone and of course see him again.
In their dorm room James found Remus and Lily integrating Sirius about his summer, the object in James pocket felt a million time heavier. Cousin had given it to him to give to Sirius. He didn't once ask for an explanation, although he wanted to.
"Remus!" James exclaimed.
"Prongs," James nearly fell over when Sirius launched himself at James for a hug, "I missed you!"
James laughed, "I missed you too, Padfoot. How was your summer?"
"It was fine I made money modeling, and now Moony and Lily won't stop teasing me about it." James turned his head to the side to see passed Sirius and look at the other two.
"Come on you two, Sirius is making a name for himself, no need to tease him for it. He makes a fool of himself regularly, that's when you can tease him then." Sirius wrapped himself tighter around James.
"You're an arse, I'm not letting you go," Sirius declared.
"That's counter intuitive Pads," James patted the top of his head.
"But you love me!"
"You're not wrong there. Have you seen Mooney's YouTube channel, he's mean when he's alone," James walked over to his bed with Sirius clinging to him.
Sirius head perked up from where he was resting it on James shoulder, "Moony has a what now?"
"We'll watch the video's later than. Teddy was better this summer, still a cranky fifteen year old though," James says to Remus.
"Are you really not going to remove him from your lap?" Lily asks.
"Well Sirius was on his own all summer, I assume no one gave him the amount of attention he actually needs, so I'm going to let him stay until he's ready to leave."
"They really have no sense of personal space do they?" Lily asks. Remus shrugs, "Why bother? Sirius has always snuck into bed with one of us, we really don't have a problem with it until he starts steeling blankets it seems good for him."
Lily flopped down, "Boys are exasperating."
~Doomed~
It was much harder than James thought to give Sirius the locket Cousin gave him. He could just give it to Sirius and not say who it was from, but Cousin made James promise to tell him it was from his benefactor. It was mid-November before James decided screw it, he was going to give the damn locket to Sirius with the creepy story. Sirius accepted a lot of thing perhaps he'd just accept his.
On the morning of the eighteenth, despite it being a Monday James snuck in to Sirius bed at five in the morning.
"Sirius, are you awake?" James hissed. Remus was still soundly asleep.
Sirius groan and rolled over opening one eye, "Well no I am."
"Shh! We can't wake Moony," James scolded quietly. "I have a gift for you."
Both of Sirius' eyes opened now. "What is it?" He was eager.
"It's a bit weird but I know who you're benefactor is, and he," Sirius' eye lit up.
"Really? Do you know why-"James covered Sirius' mouth with his hand.
"I know who your benefactor is, but I can't tell you," James said and shoved a box into Sirius hand.
"Open this," James insisted. Sirius followed James orders and opened the white box to find a locket with an S on the cover.
"Oh wow, this is really-"
"He wanted you to open the locket." James interrupted.
Sirius scowled at James, "I'm taking my sweet time Prongsie," He hissed.
James thought that was stupid and snatched the locket and opened it to show Sirius the photo's Cousin put in there.
James and Sirius gasped at the sight, there were two dark haired boys around the ages of nine and ten grinning at the camera. The photo was clearly quite old, but both the boys looked like Sirius. Its Sirius and Regulus Black, James mind supplied. James watched as the phots moved to the two boys pushing and shoving each other playfully.
"Reggie," Sirius breathed. "James, is Reggie," Tear welled up in Sirius' gray eyes and James was victim to another one of Sirius hugs.
"Tell Reggie, thank you for me James?" Sirius asked after a minute.
"I will," James said not really knowing what he was promising.
"I'm fourteen today," Sirius grinned putting on the necklace.
"Really?"
Sirius nodded, "Let's wake up Moony!" Sirius and James jumped on to Remus' bed waking him up.
"Oft, izz five we don't hav'a be up for another hour!" Remus complained. Sirius wiggles his way under Remus' chin and stuck his nose in to Remus collar bones that the collar of a large stretched out tee shirt didn't quite manage to cover.
James continues to be a dead wait on top of Remus, but watches as Remus smiles at Sirius' and pets his hair. James rolls over Remus and Sirius, pinching Sirius in the process.
"Ouch what was that for!"
"You're a dolt, it's your birth and you let it go the past two years without letting us know." James curls his body around Sirius, nosing his hair.
Remus wiggles, "It's your birthday?"
"Yeah, probably that's what the, women at the orphan age thought," Sirius said.
"If I'd have known I would have gotten you something," Remus laments.
"James got me a necklace," Sirius holds up the golden locket, "The S is for Sirius.
"It's for stupid, actually," James mutters. Remus laughs.
"That's mean James," Remus scolds.
"Shush Moony we have another hours to sleep."
The three of them over sleep and only wake up after Lily and Taylor barge in and take photos of them.
James was not pleased the Lily managed to send a photo of him to Teddy. Teddy teases him mercilessly for the next month.
~Doomed~
Ever sense James gave him the locket Sirius has felt more balanced, he knows something, he has a connection. He has a clue. Maybe his memories aren't all that crazy and they did happen. Looking at the photograph Sirius feels something inside of him.
It's not that clear, in fact its fuzzy, but the boys are clearly brothers. They look a lot like him. When he finally manages to pull out the photo he turns it over and there's hand writing on the back the both irritates him and soothes him at the same time.
Sirius and I, late Summer 1970
Mother would kill me if she knew I still had this. - 1977
Sirius wants to know more about the boys. Their pale skin and dark eyes, what color were they, brown, blue, green, hazel? Their outfits are strange and formal. The looks on their faces are vaguely familiar to Sirius. Some of the other children at the orphanage had those look on their faces when they looked at each other. A cross between eternal love and eternal hatred. He couldn't tell much more about them. A thought sprung to his mind. What if one of the boys was related to him. If there were about ten when they were born they'd only be forty or fifty years old they could be his father, or even his grandfather.
In art class Sirius ended up drawing them in a series of frames as they wiggled around shoving each other with grins on their faces. Ms. Lion praised his attention to detail. And the continuity in their movements.
Sirius' dreams featured a smaller boy like him running though a grand house as they played. It made Sirius' heart ache as he wished that could have been his life with a mother and father and a little brother. He asked James to describe his family life more often and listened with a wistful smile, during the stories. Sometimes though James would brush him off and stalk off for hours on end.
Remus didn't have much in the way in family it had always been just him and his dad. His mum had never been in the picture. His dad was enough for Remus, there when he needed him never failing to showed up for every school function and proud of his son when he got into Wobbles. Remus stories weren't as great as James because he didn't have a ton of family to mess with him.
Sirius like it when Remus let him sit next to him quietly while he drew or looked at the photo in the locket.
"Moony," Sirius asks a few days before Christmas break, "Why do you think I have a benefactor?"
Remus closes his eyes and smiles wearily at Sirius. Panic hits Sirius in the chest until he remembers the past few days of staying up late studying, Remus isn't sick or hurt. "I think you have a benefactor because the universe isn't full of bad luck."
Sirius doesn't understand, "My dad says that bad stuff, like war and hatred only happen so that when something really good comes along, you really cherish it. When I asked him about my ma, he said she wasn't a women who wanted kids. He was barely out of childhood himself when he found out he had a kid. He panic when he found about me. Though he didn't deserve something so precious and then when he held me it seemed better, he could take care of me, and get though collage. Dad says that even though my ma left he had me and many wonderful experiences because of me.
"Applying that logic to you. You never knew your parents and grew up in an orphanage. Then you get into Wobbles on an academic scholar ship and when you lost it someone came a long and paid for you to attend. Maybe they wanted to adopt you but couldn't for some reason so they become your benefactor, keep you in this school," Remus says.
"I like that," Sirius rests his head against Remus shoulder.
"Dad says you can come home with me over Christmas vacation, If you'd like," Remus offers.
Sirius' eyes go wide and light up, "Really?"
Remus laughs, "Of course I wouldn't offer if I wasn't Sirius."
"You're puns are not as funny as you think Moony," Sirius said with a straight face.
"That what you think," Remus replied.
