JADE POV
It was a dark, cloudy night as the Narnian attack force descended onto the castle. The fiery feathers of the griffin burned in the dark night; each claw holding onto a fighter. I found myself staring down at the serene Telmarine village below, smirking as I pictured hell breaking loose on these very grounds.
I was interrupted from my dark thoughts, as my name was called from down below.
'Jade...JADE'
'What?!' I whispered, leaning off the back of the griffin.
'We need to talk.' Edmund said from in-between the claws.
'This is not the time or place.'
'Are you going to explain or do I need to come up there?'
Guessing he was referring to his discovery during our duel, I snapped 'You come up here, and I'll push you into the moat!'
He knew I wasn't bluffing.
We glided towards the tower and landed making no noise.
We were positioned on the roof of the highest tower of the castle. Knowing that Kaitlin would feel squeamish if she was in my position, a smile crept onto my face. I looked down and thought of her riding her own griffin, this very second, at this very height.
I crept my body around the side of the circular roof and watched the Telmarine solider, who was currently on watch, dart his eyes around like a hawk.
'Jade'
I yelped.
The solders head whipped round at super speed. But I was faster. I slammed my body round so my back was against the tile wall, my left arm pushing the freckled idiot back with me.
With a death glare, I wacked him on the head and made a motion with my fingers.
Seconds later, the griffin's claws were wrapped firmly around the Telmarines shoulders. He was lifted into the air with a cry of surprise. The creature flew a few meters away and turned to look at us.
I brought my hand up and made a fist, turned it around so it was facing downwards and released.
Drop him.
He fell fast, the lower he went, the quieter his cries became.
'Finally, we're alone.'
Slowly, I turned to look at him.
'I think you need to start talking.' He said
'And I think you need to go.' With that, I pushed him off the roof and watched him land with ease.
'This isn't over.' He yelled, as I climbed back onto the griffin.
We took off. Turning around, I saw Edmund point his torch into the darkness.
Let the fun begin
KAITLIN'S POV
'Professor?' Caspian called softly, knocking on the window of the study. When he received no reply, he picked the lock using his dagger. Slipping through the open window with ease, he turned to help the rest of us into the room.
Glancing around the study, my eyes moved from the filled bookshelves to the scrolls of paper, trying to look for any sign of where the professor was.
'I have to find him.' Caspian said hold a pair of reading glasses gently in his hands.
'You don't have time.' Peter interrupted, 'You need to open the gate.'
Caspian objected 'You wouldn't be here without him,' he paused, and continues softly 'and neither would I.'
'You and Katy can handle Miraz.' Susan relented as Peter began to object. Placing a hand on his arm, I shook my head at him.
'We'll be fine.' I said calmly.
'Besides I can still get to the gate in time.' Caspian added before running out of the study followed by Susan and Trumpkin.
'We'd better go.' Peter motioned me forward.
Walking quietly through the corridor, I kept peering over my shoulder nervously as Peter stopped in front of a door.
'Are you sure this is it?' I asked quietly. He nodded before swinging the door open but faltered when he saw it was empty. Cautiously, we walked into the room and stopped as we caught sight of the baby in the crib.
'Where did that come from?' he asked, his voice barely more than a whisper.
'Really? Haven't you had the birds and bee's talk?' I asked smiling, despite myself.
'Of course.' He said looking over his shoulder to raise an eyebrow at me.
'If you're sure.' I muttered looking away from him.
'I can show you sometime.' He offered offhandedly, causing my mouth to drop open as he grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the room. He couldn't have been flirting with me, could he? Of course not, I thought, dismissing the thought instantly.
We continued running through the castle, until we ran straight into Susan. We collided lightly, before me and Susan straightened up.
'Where's Caspian? 'I asked breathlessly.
'He ran off after some...unsettling news.' She answered, carefully.
'Put the sword down, Caspian.' We heard a woman's voice say faintly. 'I don't want to do this.'
Susan loaded her bow and arrow, and pushed the door open. 'We don't want you to, either.'
'This used to be a private room.' Miraz said, his hands on his hips, with Caspian's sword pointed at his neck. His wife, however, aimed a loaded crossbow at Caspian.
'What are you doing? You're supposed to be in the gate house.' Peter said pointedly.
'No.' Caspian objected. 'Tonight, for once, I want the truth. Did you kill my father?' he asked, pressing his sword perilously close to Miraz's neck.
'Now we have it.' Miraz muttered softly, startling his wife.
'You said he died in his sleep.'
'That was more or less true.'
'Caspian.' Susan said hoping to catch his attention. 'This won't make things any better.'
'We, Telmarines, have nothing if we hadn't taken it,' Miraz continued, undisturbed. 'Your father knew this as well as anyone.'
'How could you?' his wife hissed in disgust, her hold on the crossbow faltering.
'The same reason that you will pull the trigger.' He spared her a glance. 'For our son' he said, stepping closer to Caspian's sword.
'Stay right there.'
'You have to make a choice, dear. Do you want our child to be king or to grow up like Caspian here?' He said stepping even closer to Caspian's trembling sword, drawing blood. 'Fatherless.'
Without hesitation, she released the arrow, shooting Caspian while Miraz escaped. She set free an agonized scream as Susan ran to Caspian's side. Peter grabbed my hand and began running down the corridor again, before I could attempt to console the crying women.
'Where are you going?' I asked, struggling to match his pace.
'Peter!' Susan shouted, halting him.
'Our troops are just outside, come on!' He persisted as I shared a look with Susan as he finally let go of my hand and ran even faster. Sighing, I lifted the hem of the dress slightly, so that I could run faster and followed after him.
Finally, catching up to him, I watched as he attempted to turn the wheel.
'Peter.' Susan said. 'We have to call this off while we can.'
'No, I can still do this.' He was trying to convince himself, rather than anyone else. 'Help me!' he shouted as Miraz's archers began to surround the castle's courtyard.
'Exactly who are you doing this for Peter?' Susan asked as the four of us strained against the giant wheel. As the gate opened and the bridge lowered, the Narnians ran in amidst Peters cry 'For Narnia!'
Never in my life have I been more thankful than to Peter for his training as I disarmed another Telmarine soldier. Scanning the courtyard, my eyes fell onto Jade who was holding her own against a Telmarine twice her size. As he swung at her, she ducked under his blade whist another soldier snuck up behind her. While the body of the soldier before her fell to the floor, she turned and saw the other raise the sword in the air
My heart hammered uncomfortably in my chest. I couldn't lose Jade. Not now, not ever. I ran towards her hoping with every fibre of my being that I got there in time. I wasn't even close when another sword deflected the Telmarines. Peter moved the Telmarines focus onto himself as he slashed him through the chest, making him fall to the ground. Turning to Jade he spoke quickly and she nodded before she ran off.
Returning my attention to the soldier in front of me, I blocked his sword and flung it to the side. With a quick sash, he fell to the floor. As Peter ran past me, I grabbed his arm, stopping him.
Quickly he turned to face me, his eyes scanning my face repeatedly. 'Thank you...for saving her' I said, sincerity rolling off of my tongue.
'You're welcome.' He said quickly, before we ran in opposite directions.
JADE POV
I was on a roll. Kill after kill, after kill. A soldier fell to the ground, as I slashed him through the stomach, while Edilio stood beside me, mirroring my movements.
'This isn't as bad as I thought it would be.' He said, while shoving his shield into some guys face, knocking him out cold.
'What.' I exclaimed 'This is awesome.' I was in-between hand-on-hand combat with an arrogant one who just wouldn't die.
'I feel like I was born to do this.' I wasn't exaggerating. Every time I disarmed a soldier, I felt this buzz inside of me. All my life, I felt like a fish out of water. I'd get in trouble for starting fights or getting someone hurt. It's not my fault they couldn't stand up for themselves, they're all talk, but when it comes to fighting they have no logic. No strategies. Here, I have something to channel my anger into. For the first time, I feel like I'm fighting for a purpose. I feel like I fit in.
'Jade.'
'What?' I asked
Edilio was staring out into the distance with a look of amazement in his eyes. Following his gaze, I found myself making the exact same expression.
Kaitlin was fighting hand-on-hand with a fairly fat soldier. It looked like he could sit on you and win. Katy managed to disarm him. It was the most aggressive and athletic thing I've ever seen her do.
'Yes.' I cheered, throwing my fist in the air. At that moment, a Telmarine double my size, managed to catch my surprise.
Cheater.
Luckily, I was able to duck, but not without having my helmet thrown off my head.
'Watch out.' I heard Edilio scream, as I ran my sword through the soldier.
Turning around, I only heard the sound of a sword slamming against another, as Peter started fighting with a Telmarine directly in front of me. Did he just save my life?
After he was finished with kicking some ass, he whispered in my ear
'Go find Edmund.'
Hell no. I'm the best swordsman you have. But for some reason, I just nodded like an idiot and ran inside.
After a while of pointlessly searching the castle for the freckled idiot, I was close to giving up.
I opened a gate that led into a big open spaced quart yard. In the middle sat a fountain flowing clear water, and beside it sat a golden griffin.
'Well, you're not Edmund.'
Walking over, I couldn't help but look up into the night sky. It's funny how out here it's calm and serene, while only a few meters away, there's literally a battle going on.
I stroked his feathers, while sitting beside him. How big is this bloody castle? It's gonna be impossible to find Edmund. I was starting to get worried. Any sane person would stay put and not wonder in an unknown place. But he's crazy. That's why I couldn't find him where I left him. What if he got killed? Arghh he's such an idiot.
I stood up. There's only one way I'm going to find him. I walked back through the gate and into the castle.
After taking a couple of random turns, I came across a rather ugly looking group of Telmarines. Drawing my sword, I winced as I heard a familiar sound of scraping metal. Their heads turned around to look at the source of the sound. Me. Oh well, it's now or never. After releasing the ridiculous battle cry I'd been practising with Edilio, I charged at them.
Piece of cake.
I wondered through the corridor until I came across a large door. This looked promising.
Cautiously, I opened the door and walked inside. Making sure to keep to the walls and shadows, I found myself in a strange looking armoury. It was like I died and went straight to heaven. There were swords sharp enough to slice diamonds in half; crossbows fast enough to plunge through a heart with the blink of an eye; helmets so shiny, they could blind you.
I was snapped out of my daydream by a groan coming from the south end of the room. I didn't realise this room had a balcony. Is my hair colour melting my brain? I've just spent two minutes in the same room as the evil guy, and got distracted by the shiny things.
Miraz was looking out into what I could only guess was the battle field. Of course, his body guards were with him. Spastic Pansy.
With my sword still gripped in my hand, I advanced on my pray. I was like a python ready to jump.
Flinging myself into the air, I stabbed Miraz in the back, and single-handedly fought his body guards, saving Narnia.
Well, I was about to, when Peters voice stopped me.
'FALL BACK!'
Arghh, things must be really bad if I-can-do-everything-call-me-superman Peter Pevensie is retreating. If I don't find Edmund soon, he's going to be stuck here with no way out. They could torture, or probe him. Not on my watch. I'm coming Pansy!
I left the room, making sure to make no noise. Edmund needed to be found, and fast. To do this, I'm gonna need speed.
Feeling the wind in my face, I looked over the castle, keeping an eye out for a familiar mop of black hair.
The griffin dipped down lower so that we were eye level to the windows going along the building. Glancing in, I felt myself fill with disappointment as they were all empty.
I'm not a very patient person. This situation is way too irritating and time consuming for a person like me.
And then, as if god was playing a game with my emotions, I saw Edmund balancing on the roof, taking on a Telmarine. He didn't bother fighting him. Edmund just gracefully pushed him. Simple, but effective.
'Edmund' I whispered.
Surprised, he looked up into the sky 'God?'
Idiot.
'I prefer goddess.' I stated sarcastically.
His face instantly straightened, turning into a glare 'Jade.' He knows me so well.
'Get off that damn roof; we gotta get out of here'
He looked down at me and took a step, messing up his footing completely, and went flying done to the tower below.
Ouch, I winced. Does he have a brain?
Even though he fell, he was still a couple meters above us. I watched in horror as the tower door opened, revealing two gigantic Telmarines. He was unarmed and injured; he had no chance.
Cornered between the stone wall and the solders, I watched as Ed looked down at us, winked, and looked back at them. My heart skipped a beat, as he jumped off the tower, hurtling towards us.
Wait, was I supposed to catch him? Pushing forward, the griffin caught Ed with ease and raced into the night sky.
'Nice catch' he commented
'Don't. Do. That. Again.' I warned
He just simply laughed in return.
We continued flying through the sky, when I finally realised the full scale of the castle.
'I'm so gonna get myself one of these castles.' I dreamed out loud.
'I had one of these castles.' Edmund retorted, obviously feeling big-headed.
'Yeah, and then it got smashed to a pulp.' I said, feeling the urge to knock him down a few pegs, remembering how cair paravel was attacked.
'You're just jealous'
'I'm totally jealous of your pile of rocks' I said sarcastically
'You can say some really hurtful things sometimes, you know that.' He joked
'And, did you know, you can be really obnoxious sometimes.' I countered.
'Or, you have a tendency to be really emotionally unstable.'
Normally, I would retort back but turning around was a big mistake.
'You have really green eyes.' I whispered. Seriously, they were like emerald orbs, forcing you to focus on them. I'm surprised the white witch wasn't the one hypnotized into doing things.
You know that situation, when you're analyzing something really hard, and you don't realise you're staring? Yeah, that was happening right now.
The pink stain resonating off his cheeks caught my attention, forcing me to turn back round.
Perfect timing, as we flew over the cast battle grounds and witnessed hundreds of Narnians trapped behind the gate, while Peter rode away to safety.
'What the heck!' I shouted, as they began being shot by crossbows.
'Is he just going to leave them there?' my voice dripping with venom.
My eyes scanned over the faces that sacrificed themselves, recognising a few of them.
'Oh my god!' I whispered.
'What, what is it?' Edmund asked, worried.
'No, please no.' I begged
My eyes locked onto the eyes of a specific centaur. He looked up at me, a slight smile placed on his lips.
'We have to go get him, we have to go down and get him.'
'Who? Get who?'
'Edilio!'
'Jade, we can't.' Edmund replied weakly.
'Why not?!' I practically screamed, my eyes not once leaving Edilio. 'We have to go get him.'
'He's a centaur, he'll weigh too much.' Ed pleaded in my ear. 'I know this is hard for you, but leave him, he'll drag us down.'
A lone tear escaped out of my eye, which I quickly wiped away.
How did this happen? A few seconds ago I was joking with Edilio. A few days ago I was playing pranks on Edmund with Edilio.
My breath hitched in my throat as he brought his hands to his chest, just as a stupid Telmarine decided to plunge an arrow through his heart.
I brought a hand over my mouth, muffling the sobs. A hand placed itself on my shoulder, trying and failing to console me.
If I hadn't been out looking for this idiot, I could have died with him. Fight together; Die together. Or I could have got us both out alive. He might still be alive right now.
I roughly shook Edmunds hand off my shoulder, ignoring the hurt expression I could see out of the corner of my eye. Arching my back slightly, I laid my head inside the feathers on top of the griffins head, letting the tears run freely.
KAITLIN'S POV
Agonized cries ripped through the air as dozens of bodies fell; Narnian's and Telmarines alike. Horrified, I watched as lifeless bodies crashed to the ground, my heart squeezed painfully as I watched unable to help them; completely and utterly useless.
'FALL BACK!' Peter shouted. 'We need to retreat! Now!'
Whilst the Narnians ran to the gate, a single thought ran through my head; Jade. I ran in a random direction, hoping to find her, until strong arms wrapped themselves around my waist, and hauled me onto a horse sitting my sideways on the saddle, my side pressed against someone's chest.
I strained against the iron grip that they had on me, but it wouldn't budge. I turned to face the person and locked my eyes on his.
'Let me go Peter please.' I pleaded struggling to break free.
'Kaitlin,-'
'Jade, I have to find Jade.' I beseeched, bucking desperately in his arms.
'I can't lose her.' I whispered, brokenly all of my fight dying down completely. Taking a hold of my chin, he forced me to look at him.
'She's safe,' he said earnestly, 'I made sure that she got out safe. She's safe I promise.'
Fixing his grip on my waist he rode quickly, covering me as he ducked under the gate. The horse came to a halt as we heard the thud of the Minotaur's fallen body. Facing the trapped Narnians I watched the desperation on their faces as they tried to lift the gate. Determination replaced the desperation as they turned back to face the Telmarines. One face stuck out the most; Edilio. How would Jade cope when she found out?
'Peter the bridge,' Reepicheep hurried, tearing my gaze away from the Narnians as Peter guided the horse over the closing bridge.
As we journeyed back to the How the faces of the Narnians kept repeating over and over in my head. One appearing far more often than the others. Edilio. Choking back a sob, I turned my face into Peter's neck as I clung to his shirt. His grip on my waist tightened and I forgot for a second that this was the Peter Pevensie that I 'hated'. All I could remember was that he understood. Feeling numb, my head laid on his chest as his hand quivered on my waist. That was when I knew that their deaths had affected him. He wouldn't show it because he was a leader that was supposed to save a Kingdom. But every single death had affected him, more than he would ever let on.
In a small attempt to comfort him, I laced our fingers together and squeezed his hand once.
