Yay I updated! :D see told you guys I wouldn't take as long! Well the cliff hanger shall finally be resolved haha enjoy :3
Dean drove in silence for Cas's sake because he looks like just the force from one word would make him crumble into pieces. He drives fast, faster than he probably should but he couldn't take this silence that was between the two of them. He arrives at the hospital pretty fast with speeding. They sit in silence,Cas's back turned to him from the ball he has curled himself into before he finally speaks.
He tries to not sound forceful or overpowering so he says it quietly, "Cas, you have to tell me what happened now. What's going on?"
Cas doesn't say anything and through his reflection that his mouth opened to say something and then it closes. And then Cas slammed the door open and bolted out from the door running out into the snow storm that had started to go off a few minutes before they had arrived. If Dean had thought that Cas would have been a horrible runner before he was completely wrong because Cas was fast.
It took a moment for Dean to register that Cas had done something so impulsively and ran after him. He puts his hand up to cover his eyes from the snow that's blowing into his face from him running. The snow is wet and mushy and melts instantly once it hits the ground. It so rarely snows here and the snow they usually get isn't that good. He runs fast, faster than he usually bother with because he doesn't like running. But this was for Cas.
He makes it to the lobby in a minute or less and pants heavily before going up to the front desk. He looks around the room frantically. There's a girl at the front desk ruffling through papers and writing stuff down, she's pretty she look only a few years with fair skin dark hair and green eyes like his own. She gives him a sweet smile as comes up the desk, his breathing finally getting under control. But she wasn't Cas.
"Hi my names Tessa, is there something i can help you with?" She says propping her elbows onto the desk and leaning forward to him.
"A boy with dark hair and a tan trench coat came running in here a few moments ago, do you know where he went?" Dean asks filled with worry.
"Oh, you're with the Milton's?" She says her eyes widening and filling with pity. It takes Dean a moment to remember that Cas's family goes by Milton not Novak, it was only Cas who had that name, besides his brother Micheal.
"Yeah, can you tell me where they are?"
"Of course let me look up the room, you'll want to get up there pretty fast, that Zachariah fellow seems pretty keen on doing it soon." She says sadly.
"What do you mean?"
"They are pulling the plug on Mrs. Novak of course." She says looking down at some papers. Dean's heart thumps in his chest, he had forgotten that Cas's has been in a coma for the past three years. This is why Cas could barely function on the way down, he was going to loose him mom, his last parent and Zachariah was most definitely not a parent to Cas.
"Room 221 on the second floor, good luck." She says with a small smile and a bow of her head and then Dean is off. He doesn't even waste time with the elevator he runs to the door that leads to the stairs and bounds up a fast as he possibly could. He has lost his mother and he knows how hard this is going to be for Cas, he needs to be there, no one was there for him when his own mother died, he was always there for everyone else, he would not let Cas take this on alone. He races down the hall way of the second floor, grateful that the hospital was a small one. He counts the room numbers as he runs, 213; 214; 215; 216; 217; 218; 219; 220; and finally 221.
The door is open and inside is a crowd of people, the pretty red head that's Anna and with Gabriel by her side, her eyes are puffed and red, Dean thinks of hearing her crying when she called Cas. A few others Dean might have guessed as friends or family and another man who may have been the most beautiful person Dean had seen, he looks to be in his mid twenties and has light brown hair with tanner skin and golden eyes, Dean stares at him for a minute before he walks up to his best friend who is still hovering just a few feet away from the door and puts a hand on his shoulder.
Cas turns to him with wide eyes that have tears in the corners. Dean takes Cas's forearm and tries to pull him into him but this time Cas pulls away and gives a glance over to they who Dean knew must be Zachariah now. He gives a small nod and tries to restrain himself from Cas only wanting to hold him in his arms. They stand there for a couple of minutes before Anna comes over to them looking at the ground and then looks up at them when she fully approaches.
"Cas they're going to do it soon, if you want to say something to her now is the time." She says with a melancholy look. Cas's jaw hardens and nods his head looking like like he's trying to compress the tears that wants to come out.
"Will you come in with me Dean?" Cas asks softly. Dean nods his head and Cas turns and starts to make his way over the patients bed.
He hesitates before walking in wondering if it was alright for him to be here, and then he look at Cas and he doesn't give a damn about him not supposed to be there or not, all that matters is Cas. He walks in and walks the short distance to the bed where Cas's mother lays. Her dark hair splays out from her head and her skin is on the more fair side like her son. Dean wonders if she had Cas's sapphire eyes, or if those are from his father, if from anyone at all.
Cas stares at her for a while at the side of her bed and then gently takes one of her hands into his own. He looks confused and then strangely enough a tiny twitch of his lips to form a bit of a smile for a moment. He bends down and whispers something in her ear and he stays like that whispering to her for several minutes. Curiosity spikes up in Dean on what Cas is saying but he'll have to refrain from asking Cas, it could be something that only Cas and his mom share and he didn't want to ruin that.
When Cas raises his head he looks up at Dean with wide eyes and starts to walk over to him.
"Dean lets go outside i could do for some fresh air right now." Cas whispers to him. Dean looks at him surprised.
"Are you sure? You don't want to be here when they do it?" Dean questions. Cas just nods his head and then takes the end of Dean's sleeve just as Dean would normally do with Cas's trench coat and starts to lead them out of the door.
"Castiel!" A voice barks at them. Cas freezes and then gets a hard look in his eyes and then turns around.
"Yes Zachariah?" He says stiffly. Dean looks at the approaching man nervously, he wouldn't do something to Cas here, would he? Cas step father is a larger man with a pot belly and a piggish face with a badly balding head. This is the man Dean has been hating, with out even meeting, and now that he has met him, he hates him even more.
"Watch your tone with me boy. Where do you think your going?" Zachariah says almost in a disturbing way.
"I'm going outside with Dean." Cas says firmly. Dean is almost shocked at how Cas is acting, he stands confidently and his chin tilted more up than his usual gaze at the ground.
"No your not, your mother is going to die, you need to be in here. It'll look bad if you leave." Zachariah snaps at him. Cas's face twists into anger when he says that.
"My mom died years ago when she took your hand in marriage, Zachariah." Cas snaps right back. "Now i'm going outside with Dean. There is no point in seeing someone who is already dead inside die again."
Zachariah stares at him looking surprised.
"So this is Dean. The boy who has been corrupting you." Zachariah says snidely staring Dean down. Dean is about to snap at him when Cas speaks up again.
"He is not corrupting me, he is making my life better."
"If you think that i'm going to stand here and be humiliated by a snot nosed kid like you, your wrong. You are going to stay here and then not talk to his corruption of sin in your life anymore."
"No, your wrong. What i'm going to do is not take anymore of your shit. I will not deal with you now that my mother is gone, i'll be graduating soon anyways and i don't need you. Come on Dean." Cas says confidently and then takes Deans hand and leads them out of the room and into the hall where they get in the elevator to go down.
Dean still can't believe what just happened, he feels so proud for Cas. Once the elevator closes Cas collapses into Dean's arms. Dean holds him tightly.
"I can't believe that just happened. I'm so proud of you Cas." Dean says to him.
"I can't believe that just happened either." Cas says against his chest.
"Did you really mean what you said? About your mom?" Dean asks and gets a nod back. The elevator dings alarming them that they have reached the first floor and they pull apart. Just as the doors start to slide open. They walk outside, Dean nodding to Tessa when she says hello to them.
The air outside is frigid and its still snowing, some of it even sticking to the ground. Cas doesn't seem to even notice it and walks out right into the middle of the snow. Dean walks out with him regardless of him shivering a little bit not used to the cold. Cas folds his arms and then casts his head and eyes up to the sky that is puffing snow out onto them. Snow begins to collect in Cas's messy hair and long eyelashes and his checks flushing a light pink from the cool air, it only seems to make his eyes go more blue. And the way his lips are slightly pursed... He looks like an angel.
"You know," Cas begins, "I always hated the cold. A couple years back i tried to argue something with Zachariah and it ended up being a humongous fight, not only with me, but Micheal decided to join in too. Zachariah got so mad that he kicked me out and it just so happened that on that day it was the rare weather we have tonight. I had no where to go so i just wandered around and i remember being so cold, i never wanted to feel that cold again.
"But out here, now, i can hardly feel the cold. In fact i don't, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I don't know what that means. But it doesn't, i used to fear being cold, henceforth me always wearing a coat, and the fact it hides things. I hated it, and now, there is nothing." And then Cas takes his gaze off of the heavens and looks at Dean.
"Dean, you said that you love me, is that true?" Cas asks. Dean steps forward to Cas and kisses him chastely on the lips and then pulls back, and then kisses him again, this time its sweet and lingers a little longer.
"I love you Cas." Dean says.
"I was a kid with not one person in the world who cared for me. So many years of my life with nobody to talk to but my reflection and broken glass, i hated what i called a life. But now i have you Dean. Thank you. I love you." Cas says and kisses Dean long and sweet.
It snowed on the day Cas's mom died. But it also snowed on the day Dean realized that Cas was his life, and that he loved him. They stand outside of the hospital in the snow not knowing what was going to happen next in their lives, what was going to happen with them. But in that moment they didn't care because they had each other. Dean just hoped that it would last like this for a long time. He knew that life was cruel, that it likes to kick you in the ass and then laugh in your face, but with things like Cas, maybe, just maybe, they could get through it together.
