The next few chapters, I'm aiming to explain more about the characters, like the aliens' customs and laws versus the human ones, and even show how the aliens' presence at the farm is disrupting more than they thought XD
Let the antics of the invaded Kurosaki Farm commence!
The sun was barely peeking over the treetops as he began working on the fields. He had two days worth of work to do, since he'd decided to run off with his pale counterpart to goof off the day prior. He'd finish two rows and the sun was high enough that he'd pulled on his straw hat when the calloused hands of Menoly appeared and began weeding with him. He didn't attempt conversation, as she wouldn't talk to him, rather she couldn't as she'd been ordered not to. He wasn't sure why.
Ichi heard footsteps and didn't bother looking up. It was probably Renji or maybe even Byakuya, so there was no worry. To his surprise, white hands appeared in his peripheral and he looked to the next row in front of him, and smiled when he saw his brother. Shiro met his eyes and smiled back, but the oranget's grin faded.
"Did they tell you?" Ichigo inquired as he continued weeding.
"Tell me what?"
"They're going to 'pack up' our room."
"Oh... that. Yeah. Grimmjow told me last night."
"I wonder what they'll use the room for."
"Forget that! What'll they do with our stuff? Or mom and dad's stuff?"
"The prince said that they're going to make a museum with them."
"A museum? What for?"
Ichigo shrugged as he moved to the next row. "We're interesting." Shiro went to weed the plants next to Ichi, and Menoly took care of the ones left in his abandoned row.
The brothers spent the rest of the time, shoulder to shoulder as they weeded. They finished and retreated to the house by one o'clock; about five hours later. Ichigo showed his brother to the bathroom where they washed off the grime of the day before donning their clothing disks, or redonning in Shiro's case.
Their bedroom was a bit stuffy, and the two windows were open to let in some air. Shiro went to the closet and opened it with a sigh.
"So what exactly can we keep?" he asked as he fingered through the mixture of old clothes that were theirs as well as a few left from their parents.
"Pretty much anything within reason, I'd guess." Ichigo went to the dresser and began rifling through the shirt drawer. "I don't care how much the prince hates my clothes, I'm keeping some of my graphic tees!"
"Such a girl," Shiro chuckled.
Ichigo stuck his tongue out at him and picked out five t-shirts from the drawer as well as some jeans from another drawer for working outside. "Oh, before I forget, Karin and Yuzu came that weekend."
Shiro turned away from the small stack of comics on the floor of the closet. "What?!"
The oranget shook his head. "Don't worry, they were apparently sent home after being kept here for the weekend."
Shiro crossed his arms and scoffed, not so trusting of the information. "I'll be grillin' Grimmjow when I get back..."
He jutted his chin towards the pile of comics. "You keeping those?" Ichigo asked.
"Hell yeah! Nothin's keepin' me away from them!"
The oranget teased him as he went to the side table and whipped open the drawer. "Oh, hey." He held up what he'd found. "Our MP3 players."
The albino momentarily abandoned the closet to get his black music player. "Sweet! I've been missing this."
"I actually forgot about it," Ichigo laughed.
Shiro grew a pondering look.
"What's up?"
"These guys don't have outlets, so how will we charge them when they die?" He tried to turn it on and it briefly flashed its menu before quickly going dark. He whined sadly.
"I guess..." the oranget shook his head. "We could probably ask the scientist. Sure, he's creepy, but he's a genius or whatever, so I'm sure he could retro fit our 'primitive' devices."
"Was that wayward compliment really for me?"
Ichigo let out an effeminate yelp and whipped around to see the pink-haired Cerebro scientist standing in the doorway. He gazed at them studiously as he waited for an answer.
"Uh... yeah it was."
He smirked. "Good, flattery will get you quite far with me. Now, what do you need?" He shifted slightly and a young Cerebro with black pigtails peeked in from behind him.
Oh, that's one of the kids that were in that pod thing the first day. The kid smiled and waved shyly at them and Ichi returned the gesture.
"Is there a way for you to change how this gets power?" Shiro asked and handed the little box-shaped device to Szayel.
With an inquisitive sound, Szayelaporro looked it over, turning it in his hands until he found the hatch in the back that concealed the battery. "It shouldn't be too difficult."
"So you can do it?" Shiro asked. "Without messing up or deleting my music?"
The scientist seemed to look at the MP3 in a new light. "This has music in it? How interesting." He turned it over again and pressed the few buttons it had, earning a brief display of the menu like Shiro had. "I'll definitely make a copy of the files so that they may be placed in a new device if something were to go wrong." He shrugged. "Or if I merely wish to study it a little longer. Do you have one as well, Ichigo?"
The oranget handed over his own sticker-covered MP3 as well as its charger, and was immediately questioned for why it was in such a state. "My little sister had some stickers and decided to get creative. She'd have done it to Shiro's too, but he flicked her on the forehead whenever she got too close." He chuckled. "Yuzu hates when Shiro does that."
The young alien seemed to perk up at the mention of Yuzu, and earned the attention of the scientist. "What is it, Lumina?"
The kid wrapped their arms around the scientist's waist and gazed hopefully up at him. It wasn't until she spoke that they knew that she was indeed a "she". "I want to talk to the humans, father."
"You may."
The twins looked to each other in confusion then back at the girl as she began talking.
"Will Yuzu and Karin be coming back anytime soon?" she asked with a dreamy tone to her voice. "We all miss them."
"'We'?" Ichi asked.
"Verona, Hana, Toshi, Riki, and I. We want Yuzu and Karin to come back."
Szayel crossed his arms. "You should've asked me first."
"Why, father?"
"I could've told you that their visit wasn't a regular occurrence, they won't be coming back for some time."
"Can they not ask for Karin and Yuzu to come visit?"
"Silly child, of course not. I had to wipe their minds before they left; they don't even remember you."
Lumina's eyes widened and then she snuffled as she looked down and rubbed her eyes.
The scientist sighed. "Spare me your tears, child."
She scrubbed her eyes furiously and lifted her head. She trembled as she clasped her hands in front of her lap and tried to cease her crying as she'd been instructed.
He rested his hand on her head and looked back to the humans. "Is there anything else that you need?"
Shiro shook his head, but Ichigo looked to the desk in the corner. "Could you convert the landline as well?"
"Whatever for?"
"To receive calls of course. And before you even think it, no it's not because we still hold on to the hope of escaping or anything. This house is different now that you guys have fiddled with it, but it's still susceptible to bills and stuff, so it'd be better to catch them before bill collectors or the police visit our house."
Shiro groaned and went to the table. He picked up the pile of papers and leafed through. "I forgot all about the bills. I have to go into town to pay this now... ugh it's already a day late."
"I doubt his Highness will let either of you go into town," Szayel sniffed. "We'll figure something else out."
"I'll still ask his Highness when I see him."
The scientist smirked. "I seem to recall that you are to call the prince, 'Master'."
The oranget made a face at him but said nothing.
Chuckling very low to himself, the Cerebro scientist pulled a small tablet from a pouch he wore on his side. Using a stylus he wrote something and then amazed the humans when he peeled the message off and affixed it to the outside of the room's door.
Shiro snickered and elbowed his little brother. "Sticky note."
Ichi sniggered as well.
"I will begin working on your musical devices now. Ah, how is you wrist by the way?"
"Healing, I guess. I'll be able to weed a lot faster once it's fully mended."
Szayelaporro nodded and took his leave after grabbing his daughter's hand.
An hour had passed, and, as what usually happens to those who are trying to go through old belongings, Ichigo was distracted by an old book he'd found buried in the drawer of the desk. Shiro was pulling things from under the bed, and all around making a mes of the room as he dug clothes, papers, dust-bunnies and boxes from its underside.
"Oh... dude."
Ichi didn't look away from his book. "Hnn?"
Shiro held up a dusty, finely crafted box. "Look."
He peeled his gaze away from the paperback and his eyebrows came together upon seeing the box. "Shouldn't that be in the safe?"
"Yeah," Shiro grunted as he flipped the stiff latches to reveal its contents. It was a New Nambu M60 sport revolver, an older one at that. It was something their father had brought over when he left his old life in Japan behind. Shiro pulled the nicely weighted weapon out and gave the barrel a spin with his thumb as he gazed down the sight. "I must've taken it out to clean, and it never made it back." He aimed at Ichigo. "BANG!"
"AUGH! Don't point that at me, you MANIAC!"
Shiro let it dangle in his left hand by its trigger guard. "Relax, it isn't loaded." He unlatched the cylinder and showed the empty slots to the oranget. "See?"
"Loaded or unloaded, you DON'T just point guns a people! Have some common decency, dammit!"
The door swung open and Renji entered. "What's going on in h-?"
Ichigo blinked and suddenly the redheaded guardsman had Shiro face down on the floor with his knee pressed to the back of his neck and his hand gripping a white wrist he was twisting in a very uncomfortable way. In his other hand Renji held the revolver. "Why do you have this?"
Shiro tried to untwist his arm and the Cerebro twisted it more. "Ow ow ow! It's our dad's! It was under the bed."
Renji's eyes narrowed. "Concealing weapons from us?" He twisted Shiro's arm more making him wail in pain as pops sounded from his shoulder.
Ichigo jumped up from the seat at the desk and held up his hands in a pacifying gesture. "We didn't realize that it was under there. Calm down, it isn't loaded or anything."
"Hypocrite," Shiro gritted out. "Let go of my arm already!"
Renji instead twisted his arm into a hammerlock and pulled him to his feet. "What use do either of you even have for weapons anyway?" he demanded.
"We live in the middle of nowhere!" Shiro yelled as he tried desperately to undo the hold the taller alien had him in. "You think if we got in trouble the police'd be here in time to save us?"
The commotion drew the prince's attention, and he entered demanding what all the noise was about. Ichigo tried to explain but was promptly interrupted by Renji.
"I discovered the pair of them with a weapon that'd been concealed under the bed."
"I-It wasn't concealed," Ichi sputtered. "We didn't even know that it was under there until Shiro decided to pull out everything from under the bed." He flinched at the suspicious look Byakuya sent him. "I swear we weren't hiding it, or planning to hurt anybody or anything." He was babbling and he knew it, but couldn't will himself to stop until the prince held up a slender hand.
"Have you any other weapons around the house that should be made known," he asked.
Ichigo stared at his fingernails as he picked them with a shrug. "Just a few more."
"Then you should reveal their hiding spots to us this instant."
At Ichigo's nod, Byakuya ordered Renji to release Shiro, and the twins shuffled out ahead of them, and went down the stairs to the small foyer. Shiro went to the door and reached up with his uninjured arm and felt around the top of the door frame until there was a click. A hatch opened revealing a double-barreled shot-gun. Renji nudged the albino out of the way and recovered the firearm. After some fiddling he figured out how to unhinge it to show the breech end. He grunted and closed it.
"This one is loaded."
Shiro glared. "Yeah, and I'd've shot you with it if you hadn't got me first that night you got here."
"Shiro..!" the oranget said warningly.
"Don't 'Shiro' me," he growled. "This bastard nearly broke my arm, and I'm pissed!"
"Ichigo, I believe you said 'a few more'," Byakuya murmured evenly.
With a growl, Shiro shooed them off of the rug on the floor and flipped it up. He gave a spot on the floor a good stomp and another hatch opened when he lifted his foot. By this point, they'd attracted a small audience out of the workers in the kitchen as well as a few who'd came from where the living room was. The twins both got to their knees and opened the hatch the rest of the way, uncovering the door of a large safe. Ichigo turned the dial on the door before there was a click and he yanked it open.
At first there didn't seem to be anything special in the safe. They pulled out a couple of photo albums, the file containing the deed to the land and house, another file holding their parents' will and testaments, bullets for the shotgun, and even a few stacks of cash (their father had been very distrustful of banks and had nurtured the paranoia into the boys). At the very bottom were two long boxes that they carefully lifted out. Tied to one of the boxes by a piece of twine was a letter that was set to the side after the twine was unknotted. Renji picked it up and skimmed it before handing it over to the prince who read it out loud.
"Happy 16th, my darling boys.
Here is something that you probably don't even remember wanting, but papa remembered for you! You two always played samurai when you were younger, wielding your sticks against the enemies of your family. You remember now? I'm pretty sure Ichi remembers since he's the smart one. Sorry, Shiro.
Anyway, now you can be real samurai with these custom crafted daito. You can slay the demons and enemy soldiers and protect the family! I hope you enjoy them.
Your papa and momma
P.S. I'd prefer it if you played with the practice swords only. I don't want to lose one of my boys!
P.P.S Don't hit your sisters with the wooden swords.
P.P.P.S I mean it.
P.P.P.P.S That was your mother.
Px5 S We'll stop now and let you go play."
Along with the text were scribbles and random dots and lines in pen, signs that their parents had been playfully fighting over who wrote which sentence, and one could tell who wrote what as their mother had had a curly, swooping handwriting style, while their father's was curved and slanted slightly. The paper itself looked as if it'd been crushed and gotten wet at one point or another.
Shink! Shiro had pulled out the daito with a white hilt, and unsheathed it enough to only show the kanji for "first son" engraved on the shiny unused blade just under the four pronged cross guard. Ichigo did the same with his black hilted one to show "second son." Along with each sword was a wooden variant in the box as well, both having the appropriate kanji engraved on the hilts.
Shiro held it away from the redhead when he reached to take it. "I swear to every God and Goddess ever, if you try to take these from us I'll make your life on Earth, Hell. Like, seventh circle Hell."
Ichigo raised an eyebrow as he rested his sword back in the box and closed it. "Dante's Inferno? I'm impressed."
Shiro shrugged.
Renji crossed his arms. "'Pets are not permitted to have weapons, or to be near an object that may be utilized as one,'" he said, seeming to quote something. "It's the law."
"Maybe on your planet it is, but we have the Third Amendment here," Shiro said.
"Second," Ichi corrected.
"Your laws do not apply here!"
"And you have no right to decide that and boss us around!" The oranget squared up to the much taller male. "Only his Highness has say in what goes on in mine and Shiro's farm."
"This land is not yours."
He pointed blindly at the files on the floor. "The deed's in our name. It's ours. You may have taken over our house, but the government isn't under your thumb."
"Enough," Byakuya finally interjected quietly. He gazed at at the twins. "These are all of the weapons concealed in this home?" They nodded and he continued. "The firearms will be confiscated, however the swords will be put into a display case since they are more sentimental than offensive objects."
Renji stammered. "I must insist against such a thing. Humans are unpredictable and shouldn't be allowed access to weaponry. As primitive as it may be."
"This 'primitive' weapon can lope your head clean off, Red," Shiro scoffed.
"Threatening me will only solidify my case," Renji growled.
"Oh, it wasn't a threat. Just a statement of its abilities."
"I suggest you cease speaking, Shiro Kurosaki, or I may just rescind my allowance of you keeping your swords," Byakuya said.
Shiro bit his lip and clutched the wooden case to his chest.
"Renji, gather the firearms and ammunition and store them safely in the ship, and I want the two of you to place all except the swords back into this container and return to your bedroom to finish gathering you belongings as well as to clean the mess you've made in it."
Ichi looked to his older brother who chuckled as if proud of his mess.
Renji had to follow them back to the bedroom to recover the revolver, as he'd left it on the bed. After another small argument, Shiro was permitted to place it back into the wooden case before letting the guardsman take it away. Byakuya remained in the room while Renji left.
"Are you nearly finished in here?" he asked.
"Yeah." The oranget pointed at the two small piles of items on the bed. His pile consisted of his five chosen shirts, two pairs of jeans, the few books he'd kept in the room and a ratty stuffed lion he remembered getting from his mom; he wanted to fix it up and give it to Yuzu as a present. Shiro's pile had his comics a band tee and knitted cap he wanted to keep, his drawing materials, and the bills so that he'd remembered to do something about them. "We'll be done once clean up."
"Ichi we should shove everything into the closet, and then watch and laugh when the workers open it and they're buried in our junk!" Shiro suggested.
The temptation was high, but the steady look from his master stopped the childish notion. Shiro saw it too.
Shiro tsked. "Ah, yer no fun. Oh, Prince Byakuya?"
He was given an inquisitive gaze.
"I need to go into town." He held up his hands before the prince could speak. "Wait, hear me out. I only want to go there so that I can pay off some bills and maybe check on some other stuff."
"And what other 'stuff' would this be?"
Shiro counted off on his fingers. "I need to check in with the rest of the family before Aunt Yoruichi comes to yell our ears off, I was going to have someone come up to check on the pipes for the house next month, but I guess I can go cancel that now, I've been craving candy, so I'll probably grab some while I'm down there. Oh, and we need to sell our vegetables to the market before they go bad." He looked to his younger brother. "Do you know if they're still good?"
Ichi shook his head.
"Ah, well scratch that off the list then. Milk?"
"I don't know, I was told that Susie and Kelly were being taken care of by workers."
Byakuya spoke. "The milk harvested from them is given to the workers to drink. The children drink it as well."
"Oh. Well, at least it isn't going to waste. So can I go to town to take care of everything?" Shiro asked.
He closed both sets of eyes. "I will consider it."
The albino shrugged. "At least that wasn't an outright 'no'."
With that done, they set to work on cleaning up the room.
x~x
The twins were resting on the floor of the prince's room. Most of the items that they had chosen to keep close by had been put away, Shiro's stuff in Grimmjow's room on the ship, and Ichi's in the prince's room, but they kept a few things to keep them entertained. Ichigo kept one of his books, Of Mice and Men to be precise, while Shiro kept his drawing materials. The albino was on his stomach, pencil to paper, while Ichigo had his head resting on the other's back as he read. They stayed like that for quite a while.
It was around 4 o'clock when Wonderweiss and Loly entered, bearing their dinner. The dreamy-eyed servant set the prince's food on the single chair table in the room, while the humans' food was set on the carpeted floor before them They abandoned their entertainment to dig in.
Shiro made a face after the first bite. He glanced at the prince and back at his brother. "Kono tabemono wa suu..." he muttered, briefly using their father's native tongue.
Ichigo snickered and nearly choked on his own bite of food. He could agree with the blunt statement; the food really did suck! He really wanted to cook the meals, but he was always rushed out of the kitchen the moment he set foot in it. "Doi suru," he agreed.
"What language are you two speaking?" Byakuya asked from the table across the room. "And what are talking about?"
"Japanese," Ichigo answered. "And nothing really, Shiro was just mumbling." He ate a few bites and scratched the tip of his nose. "I've been wondering. How did you guys already know English?"
"The English and Russian languages were already available to us from the first humans we brought home to our planet long ago. The information was stored and before setting off to journey here, both languages were downloaded into the minds of everyone here."
"Just downloaded?" Shiro asked.
"Yes, after all, the mind is merely a highly complex organic computer. We figured out how to import and export images and memories from the brain some time ago."
"So does that mean that our sisters' memories of being here is stored away somewhere?" Shiro asked.
"Yes, should they come back the memories can be put back to save from reexplaining everything to them."
The albino sat up and crossed his arms, his unappealing meal forgotten. "He could've said something like that instead of just being mean to her."
Like the twin he was, Ichi immediately caught on to Shiro's train of thought. "Yeah, he could've."
"Who?" the prince asked.
"The scientist," they said in unison.
"And who was he mean to?"
"His daughter."
Byakuya made an understanding sound and turned back towards his meal. He took a bite before speaking again. "That is merely how he is, blunt and sometimes belittling with his responses that is. He is, however, a very good father to Verona and Lumina, despite appearances and tests."
The twins shared a look. "Tests?"
The serene prince nodded making strands of his hair fall over his shoulders. "Various tests were devised to decide whether a matched pair could be permitted to bear children," he explained as he rearranged the dark locks. "It was to weed out imperfections in our species as well as to ward against those who would harm or be unable to support children, mentally or financially."
"When you take over, please enforce that," Ichi said while pointing at the alien male. The comment made the prince need to raise a sleeve to hide a smile; the human was very good at making him betray emotions.
Shiro then brought up a good point. "Why does the scientist have children when he didn't pass the tests?"
"Because they are his creations, not the end result of a coupling."
"Oh, then that makes so much more sense." He elaborated when Ichigo asked. "Who would want to get in bed with that guy?" The twins shared a laugh at that. "So what happens if a kid is made illegally."
"They are put into a nursery school and their sires are incarcerated until the child reaches twenty years, which is the age we consider a Cerebro an adult."
Ichi whistled. "So the scientist is exempt from that punishment?"
Shiro muttered under his breath, "Stupid big words," and got a smack in the arm.
There was a long pause while the prince formed a response. "He was deemed a... special case," Byakuya said carefully. "For the first few years after their birth he was watched in secret at sporadic intervals. It was done that way to, of course, make sure he couldn't pretend to be a good parent when the investigators were around. He was very clever, and found loopholes in the law to aid him in keeping his children. For example, he had a povertized woman go through the tests, and when she passed, he paid her to take care of them when he was busy with a job or assignment. It gave her the chance to raise children as she wanted, though was barred from doing so due to her financial status."
"Smart," the oranget remarked. "Is he still watched to this day?"
"No, he proved that he was a very capable parent by the time they were six. He's even rather protective of them."
"How so?"
Byakuya hid another smirk. "Grimmjow inadvertently made Verona cry on our way here and... let's just say the Queso de Cerdo was bedridden with an unknown ailment for about a week."
Eyebrows rose.
"I even once discovered him cuddling with one of them in bed when they were sick."
"That's sweet," the oranget said. "That's funny though. Imagine having a creepy, blunt, overprotective father!"
"Goat-face in a nutshell," Shiro commented.
He broke into a fit of laughter that the albino joined in on.
The conversation ended there, and a comfortable silence fell over them while they continued to eat. Once done, the servants were called to take away the dishes and they were left to resume their prior activities, and hours later there was a knock preceding Grimmjow.
The blue-haired Queso de Cerdo sent a suggestive leer at Shiro. "I'm here for my pet." He cocked his head as he stared and the pale twin realized that the hulking male had the perfect view of his rear and rolled into a sitting position. Grimmjow chuckled at being caught and after being given permission to enter plucked the comparably smaller human into his arms.
"Wait, my stuff," Shiro protested and Ichigo gathered the scattered papers and pencils and handed them to the elder. "Thanks."
Grimmjow turned to leave.
"Before you go, lieutenant."
He turned his striking blue gaze on the prince.
"Our pets have expressed a need to go into town to take care of some things. I am willing to send Shiro, as he is the only one able to drive their automobile, as long as you will allow it."
"Oh?" He looked to his pet. "And what is it that you need to take care of?"
Shiro shrugged. "Bills to pay, things to cancel, stuff to buy, and survival."
"Survival?"
"Our aunt will come after our heads if we don't visit enough," Ichigo told him.
Grimm made a face. "Is that normal?"
"For her, yes," they answered in unison.
Byakuya shook his head. "It's uncanny how you two do that," he said more to himself than to those in the room.
The bluenet thought for a moment and then nodded. "I'll allow it, but I'm putting the microphone on your collar on record. For safety's sake of course."
"I can deal. Thanks, Grimmjow."
He pressed a kiss to the other's alabaster cheek. "You're welcome." He headed to the door with a farewell.
With his brother gone, Ichigo went to sit with the prince on the gray couch. He rested his head on Byakuya's lap as he continued to read.
There you go! Things that were left unanswered (the swords, the future purpose of the twins' bedroom, etc) will be answered later, so don't worry!
Anyway, thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed, pretty please leave me a review- they mean a lot - and have a wonderful life!
