CHAPTER 9

"WE'RE GOING TO FINISH WHAT I STARTED"

AUGUST 10, 1986 THE BASEMENT OF CAVERN RECORDS, 10:00 A.M.

"So what are we doing here, anyways?" Molly Carter asked.

"And does this have anything to do with that woman you were kissing yesterday?" Susan Fairchild added.

"Yes it does," Jake said. "Now does anyone besides myself, Amy, Serena, or the cats have any idea who she is?"

"Not a clue," Susan said.

"Your guess is as good as mine," Mina Parker said.

"I couldn't tell you," Rae Hinckley added.

"Well, I will," Jake said. "That woman I was kissing was Beryl."

"Wait a second," Molly said. "You mean, Metallia's Siamese twin Beryl?"

"One and the same," Jake said. "Knowing that Beryl's a Siamese twin, did anyone notice anything odd about her?"

"If that was Beryl," Mina asked, "where was Metallia? If they're Siamese twins, they should be joined to one another."

"Well," Jake said, "if they were still Siamese twins, they would be joined to one another."

"What do you mean, if they were still Siamese twins?" Molly asked.

"Let's just say when her goon squad captured me yesterday," Jake said, "they never found my lightsaber."

"This is starting to make sense," Susan said.

"It is?" Rae asked.

"Yes," Susan said. "If I recall correctly, the only way to kill Metallia without also killing Beryl is to separate them using a sword with a blade made of light. A lightsaber is a sword with a laser beam for a blade, and anyone who got a passing grade in their junior high science class can tell you that a laser is nothing more than a concentrated beam of light. And I would be willing to bet my favourite Toronto Maple Leafs sweater that kissing Beryl was a ruse to get close enough to use it."

"One point for the Canadian," Jake said. "But separating them with a lightsaber was the only part of my plan that I was actually able to pull off."

"Your plan?" Rae asked.

"Metallia commanded that I was to be executed," Jake said. "I figured that since I was a dead man anyways, I'd take Metallia with me. Since she already told me she wouldn't deny the last request of a condemned man, I asked for a kiss from Beryl because I knew that would get me close enough to sever their life bond. How was I to know Beryl was capable of teleporting us back here?"

"There's a lot about me you don't know."

"Who said that?" Jake asked.

"I did, Jake Slater" Beryl said, as she materialized. "Or should I say, Gilded Rose?"

"How did you just show up here out of nowhere?" Jake asked. "And how do you know my secret identity?"

"When you separated Metallia and I," Beryl explained, "You did much more than sever the life bond that existed between us."

"Obviously," Serena said. "But that doesn't explain how you just showed up, or how you know that Jake is Gilded Rose."

"Although Metallia and I were born conjoined," Beryl said, "until the day we both gained our magical abilities, Metallia and I were the best of friends. For reasons I cannot explain, when we gained our abilities, she changed, became evil. Not only did she forge a life bond between us, which could only be broken by physically separating us using a sword with a blade made of light, and casting a spell over me that would prevent me from taking my own life, she also cast a spell which, except for the fact that I would age at the same rate as she, would suppress my magical abilities unless our life bond were to be severed."

"So that explains how you can teleport," Jake said. "But I still wonder how you know my secret identity. Granted, I did take my mask off, but I'm surrounded by an aura that protects my secret identity."

"At the moment my magical abilities were awakened, you and I were kissing," Beryl said. "That contact allowed me to see inside the aura that protects your identity, as well learn your real name, and where you came from."

"So that's how you knew where to teleport me," Jake said.

"Yes," Beryl said. "I also know the only reason you wanted a kiss from me was because it was one way you could have gotten close enough to separate Metallia and I."

"You were in my mind," Jake said,

"And for that I apologize," Beryl said. "I know you probably think it was an invasion of your privacy for me to read your thoughts."

"I understand," Jake said. "You probably couldn't fully control them at first when they came back. Come to think of it, I think I felt it myself when they came back. The instant you and Metallia were fully separate from one another, it hit me like a 2 ton sledgehammer. And now that your life bond with Metallia is severed, it's time to destroy her and end her threat once and for all.""

"You do realize what you're getting yourselves into," Beryl said. "And the fact that there's no guarantee any of you will survive the battle. Metallia realizes that with her life bond with me severed, you'll return to finish the job, and she's prepared for your return."

"We knew the job was dangerous when we took it," Amy said.

"If I wasn't willing to risk everything, including my life," Susan said, "I wouldn't be here."

"Who wants to live forever anyways?" Mina asked.

"It don't matter what I'm doing when my time's up," Molly said.

"I'm as ready as I'll ever be," Rae said.

"Let's do this," Jake said, materializing his gold rose and throwing it down at his feet

"Moon Cosmic Power, Make-Up!"

"Mercury Power, Make-Up!"

"Venus Power, Make-Up!"

"Earth Power, Make-Up!"

"Mars Power, Make-Up!"

"Jupiter Power, Make-Up!"

"Just one more thing before we go," Beryl said, conjuring up a large black bandanna, and handing it to Gilded Rose. He folded it in half diagonally, and tied it around the top half of his face and over the top of his head. As he did, Beryl magically formed eyeholes for him to see out of. "I think this looks better than your old mask anyways," she said.

"We ready to do this?" Gilded Rose asked.

"Ready as we'll ever be," Sailor Moon said.

"Let's do this," Beryl said, as she teleported the whole team to. . .

METALLIA'S LAIR

"As the spider said to the fly," Metallia said, seeing the team, as well as her formerly conjoined twin, "welcome to my parlor."

"You're going to find out," Gilded Rose said, unsheathing his staff and turning it into a spear, "we're not as helpless as flies in a spider's web."

"But you'll suffer the same fate," Metallia said. "As for you, sister," she addressed Beryl, "you've outlived your usefulness to me."

"I'm not afraid of you," Beryl said. "Do your worst."

"So be it," Metallia said, firing a beam of black energy at Beryl.

"I don't believe it," Malachite said. "You killed your own sister."

"Her death was quick and painless," Metallia said.

"Too bad we can't say the same thing about her friends," Jedite said. "Too bad for them, that is."

"Where's that little turncoat Endymion?" Gilded Rose said. "Or, should I say, Darrien Shields."

"You want a piece of us?" Endymion asked. "Come and get it."

"Malachite, Jedite, Endymion," Metallia said, "get them."

"Leave Metallia's goon squad to me," Gilded Rose said. "This is personal."

"Suit yourself," Malachite said. "Jedite, you're first up."

"With pleasure," Jedite said.

"You know, my daddy taught me to never hit a lady," Gilded Rose said.

"And what is that supposed to mean?" Jedite asked.

"It means this," Gilded Rose said, transforming the spear he was holding to what appeared to be a large hat attached to his wrist by a long chain. He flung it at Jedite, and it landed on top of his head. When it landed, the brim fell to Jedite's shoulders, covering his head with a hood. Gilded Rose yanked on the chain attached to the hat, and a series of razor-sharp blades embedded in the brim closed in on each other, cleanly decapitating Jedite.

"How did you do that?" Malachite asked.

"In case you haven't figured it out," Gilded Rose said, "I can transform my staff into any weapon I can think of. It was fortunate for me I watched Master of the Flying Guillotine the other day."

"Well don't think for one second you're going to use that on me," Malachite said.

"Oh no," Gilded Rose said, transforming the flying guillotine back into a spear. "I wouldn't dream of using a flying guillotine on you. I have something else in mind.

"Let's make this interesting," Malachite said, wielding Gilded Rose's tonfas. "If you can pry these from my dead hands, you can have them back. However, if I can take your whatever it is you're using away from you, I can use it against you."

"Deal," Gilded Rose said, thrusting the spear at Malachite, who batted it away with a tonfa.

The battle raged on for several minutes, each getting several shots in on the other. Gilded Rose was a little bloodied and battered, and his body had multiple bruises and welts from tonfa strikes, while he had been using his spear to open up multiple cuts on Malachite, even managing to gouge out Malachite's left eye. While they managed to cause minor injuries, each had prevented the other from causing any major damage, or any damage to vital organs, major arteries or veins. However, after several minutes, Malachite had a major opening, and Gilded Rose capitalized on it, opening a deep slash on the side of his neck that severed his carotid artery. Malachite collapsed, and a pool of blood began forming around the wound in his neck. As Malachite took his last breath, his eyes closed for the final time, and he died, still clutching Gilded Rose's tonfas.

As Gilded Rose pried his tonfas from Malachite's hands, Endymion tried to stop him. "No," Metallia said.

"Do you really want him having another weapon?" Endymion asked.

"This has nothing to do with him having weapons," Metallia said. "Malachite and Gilded Rose made a deal, and I fully intend on seeing that deal honored."

"Besides," Gilded Rose said, tossing his tonfas to Sailor Moon, "I don't plan on using them on you anyways."

"What do you plan on using on me?" Endymion asked.

"This," he said, turning his spear into a lightsaber. "Pretty cool weapon, don't you think?"

"No fair," Endymion said. "I want a lightsaber."

"I can give you one," Metallia said.

"Fine with me," Gilded Rose said.

A silver cylinder, similar in appearance to a flash attachment from a professional camera, appeared in Endymion's hand. He pressed a button, and it emitted a red blade. "Why red?" Endymion asked.

"Because Gilded Rose has a blue blade," Metallia said. "If yours is red, it makes it easier for me to follow the action."

"Good enough for me," Gilded Rose said, as he took a swing at Endymion, who barely blocked it. The two of them engaged in furious combat. Although Gilded Rose was still recovering from his battle with Malachite, his experience, speed, and agility gave him an advantage. As the battle raged on, Endymion made one fatal error, which allowed Gilded Rose to disarm him, quite literally, by cutting his right arm off at the elbow. The arm, with his lightsaber still clutched in the hand, fell to the ground, and Gilded Rose picked up the lightsaber, and removed the arm, as Endymion fell to his knees. He held them crossed on Endymion's shoulders, and as he decapitated his opponent scissors-style, Endymion used his remaining hand to grab his dagger, and stab Gilded Rose in the heart.

"The good news is," Gilded Rose said, as Endymion's headless body fell to the ground, "I got all 3 of them."

"What's the bad news?" Sailor Mars asked.

"One of them got me," Gilded Rose said, removing the dagger from his chest. As he removed the dagger, he fell to his knees, and slumped forward as his dying breath left his body.

"Jake," Sailor Moon said, as a single tear ran down her cheek.

"Don't worry about me," the disembodied voice of Jake Slater said, as Gilded Rose's body turned to dust, which blew away in the wind. "Just worry about stopping Metallia."

"You're going to pay for this," Sailor Moon said, telekinetically grabbing Gilded Rose's lightsaber.

"I think not," Metallia said. "Sisters of Hades, do your worst."

At Metallia's command, 5 demonic looking females appeared out of a large puff of smoke, and began to attack the Sailor Soldiers. Each of the Sailor Soldiers took on one of the demons, and the battles were furious. However, the demon's strength, as well as their centuries of experience were too much of an advantage for their foes, and the Sailor Soldiers were destined to fall.

Sailor Earth was the first to die. She had attacked her opponent with a steady barrage of rocks, pummeling the demon. When she saw that her foe had been sufficiently weakened, she went in for what she thought was the kill. Forming a large wooden club to bash the demon's head in, she took one mighty swing, and at the moment of contact, the demon had formed her left hand into a dagger, which she thrust into Sailor Earth's heart. As both combatants expired, the ground opened up beneath them, swallowing the both of them, and closed up as if it had never opened.

"Susan," Sailor Moon cried.

"I knew the job was dangerous when I took it, eh," the disembodied voice of Susan Fairchild said.

Next to fall was Sailor Mars. She grappled with her demon, which evolved into a straight fistfight. Soon, they grabbed each other by the throat, and something was awoken inside Sailor Mars. The demon saw the fire in Sailor Mars' eyes, literally. Sailor Mars called forth a huge wall of flame, immolating both combatants. As the flame died down, there was nothing left of either combatant, not even ashes.

"Rae," Sailor Moon said, beginning to visibly weep.

"At least I took that bitch with me," the disembodied voice of Rae Hinckley said.

Sailor Mercury had formed an ice sword, and had engaged her demon, who had transformed her right hand into a sword, in combat. While Sailor Mercury did have an early advantage, the demon had one trick up her sleeve. She was able to make copies of herself. While Sailor Mercury was able to hold an advantage against a single foe, and was even able to hold her own against 2, 3 or even 4 opponents, the sheer number of foes quickly overwhelmed her. On her last legs and surrounded, Sailor Mercury tried one last gambit. "Mercury Hailstorm Barrage!" she yelled, and a barrage of hailstones destroyed all the copies, leaving only the original demon. However, the sheer force of numbers took their toll, and as she took her final breath, she stabbed the demon, killing her. As the demon died, she exploded, leaving no trace of either her or Sailor Mercury.

"Amy," Sailor Moon said.

"That demon learned the hard way, you don't fuck with Amy Anderson," Amy's disembodied voice said.

Sailor Venus and her demon attacked each other with energy attacks from a distance. While neither was able to score any direct hits, due to the agility of both combatants, each did manage to land glancing blows. Sailor Venus decided she wanted a little more up close and personal combat. "Venus Love-Me Chain, Encircle!" she yelled, throwing a chain with heart shaped links at the demon. The chain surrounded the demon, and as Sailor Venus pulled the demon to her, the demon grabbed the chain, and it began to glow blue. Once the demon was in range, Sailor Venus punched it in the face. While the demon was hurt by the punch, at the moment of impact, Sailor Venus felt as if someone had hit her in the face with a sledgehammer.

"I forgot to mention something," the demon said. "While you were using that chain of yours to shorten the distance between us, I used it to link the two of us, mind, body, and soul. Any harm you inflict on me will be visited on you fivefold."

"Not a problem," Sailor Venus said, clasping her hands. She extended both index fingers, kissed the tips, and placed the tips right between her eyes. "And I'm betting that works both ways."

"What's that supposed to mean?" the demon asked.

"Venus Crescent Beam, Kiss!" Sailor Venus said, as a beam of energy shot out of her extended fingers, coming out the back of her head, along with what was once her brain. As she fell to the ground, dead, the demon's head, neck, most of its shoulders, and part of its chest, exploded. As the demon hit the ground, both it and Sailor Venus turned to dust, and blew away in the wind.

"Mina," Sailor Moon said.

"Good will always triumph, because evil is stupid," the disembodied voice of Mina Parker said.

"Jupiter Flash Blade!" Sailor Jupiter said, tossing several discs of lightning at the final demon as she rushed towards her. Some of them hit their mark, while the demon managed to deflect some back at Sailor Jupiter. Sailor Jupiter and the demon engaged in hand-to-hand combat, Sailor Jupiter's punches charged with lightning. Although Sailor Jupiter's punches weakened her opponent, each punch depleted her strength, as well as the punches she took. Finally, Sailor Jupiter grabbed the demon by the throat. "Ride The Lightning!" she said, as her eyes began to spark. The lightning rod in her tiara extended to its full 10 inch height, and an extremely powerful lightning bolt hit it, channeled through her, into the demon, electrocuting it. Unfortunately, in her weakened state, the massive charge of electricity channeled through her body proved fatal to her. As she died, her body turned to dust and blew away.

"Molly!" Sailor Moon screamed.

"Get Metallia for me," the disembodied voice of Molly Carter said.

"I guess it's just you and me," Sailor Moon said, activating Gilded Rose's lightsaber.

"I wouldn't have it any other way," Metallia said, as her hands began to glow. She threw several balls of energy at Sailor Moon, who absorbed them through her deactivated her lightsaber, hooked it to her waistband, and released the energy in a single blast, which didn't hurt Metallia much, but knocked her on her butt. "Help me," Metallia said, in a voice that sounded more like Beryl than Metallia. As she said that, her appearance changed, to something much more demonic.

"That was weird," Sailor Moon said. "It almost seems as if. . . "

"As if I was possessed," the more Beryl-like voice of Metallia said. "I've been possessed by a demon ever since Beryl and I were children, although it didn't make its presence known until we gained our powers."

"But why possess you?" Sailor Moon asked.

"I'll tell you why," Metallia said, in her more usual voice. "It was because of the fact that Metallia and Beryl are conjoined twins. I thought that if I possessed one, I could possess them both, and when they gained their magical abilities, I would become twice as powerful. However, I learned possession didn't work that way. I also knew that the unpossessed twin could use her abilities to free her sister from my grasp, so as soon as we gained our powers, I took every step necessary to prevent that from happening. I knew she could use her powers to drive me out, so I suppressed them. Because if my host body were to die, I would perish, I forged a life bond so those who would kill me would hesitate for fear of also killing Beryl. That was also why I made Beryl unable to take her own life. And another reason I suppressed her powers is because I knew she would conjure the only weapon that could sever our life bond."

"Sailor Moon," a voice called in her head. The voice was one she did not recognize, although for some reason, it was familiar. "You must not kill Metallia."

"Who are you?" Sailor Moon asked.

"I am the Queen Serenity," the voice said. "I am the one who created the powers you and your friends use in your fight against Metallia. I have been observing your battle from afar. You must not destroy Metallia, I have felt the good in her heart."

"How can I stop the demon that possessed her without killing her?" Sailor Moon asked.

"You must first drive the demon from her," Queen Serenity said. "Once that is accomplished, Metallia will revert to her own self, and more importantly, you can destroy the demon."

"How do I do that?" Sailor Moon asked.

"Look deep inside your heart," Queen Serenity said. "You will know what to do."

Think, Serena, Sailor Moon thought to herself, ducking behind a wall. She went for the lightsaber hanging from her waistband. "That's not going to do you any good," her inner voice said. "You know exactly what you have to do."

"Is the almighty Sailor Moon a coward?" Metallia asked. "Is she hiding from me?"

"Hell no," Sailor Moon said, emerging from the wall she had been hiding behind. She unhooked the lightsaber from her waistband and tossed it aside. "I just needed a moment alone to figure out what I need to do."

"And that would be?" Metallia asked.

"This," Sailor Moon said, extending her right arm. In her hand appeared a pink scepter, topped with a crescent moon shaped diamond. She raised the scepter above her head, and brought it down so that it pointed at Metallia. "Moon Healing Activation!" she yelled, and the scepter emitted a beam of white light that seemed to go through Metallia. As Metallia collapsed, a demonic looking being appeared.

"I was starting to get tired of that body anyways," the demon said, in an otherworldly voice.

"So it's you," Sailor Moon said. "My true enemy."

"Yes," the demon said. "Metallia was nothing more than a shell. I am your true enemy."

"And now that I've freed Metallia from your control," Sailor Moon said, "I'm free to destroy you."

"Or die trying," the demon said, firing several blasts of energy at Sailor Moon.

Sailor Moon evaded the blasts of energy by a series of flips and rolls, landing near Gilded Rose's lightsaber. "No," the disembodied voice of Gilded Rose said, when she went to grab it. "You won't need my weapon, you already have all you need to destroy the demon."

"Jake?" Sailor Moon asked.

"I'm right here," the disembodied voice of Jake Slater said.

"We're here, too," the voices of Amy Anderson, Mina Parker, Susan Fairchild, Rae Hinckley, and Molly Carter added.

"It doesn't matter if your friends are here in the flesh or in spirit," the demon said. "They won't be able to save you."

Yes they will," Sailor Moon said. "I can feel their power flowing through me."

"But it won't be enough to stop this!" the demon said, firing a blast of energy at Sailor Moon.

"Is that the best you can do?" Sailor Moon asked, easily dodging the demon's attack. Realizing what she needed to do, she removed her tiara, and reared back to throw it.

"You're kidding, right?" the demon asked. "You really expect me to believe you're going to throw your tiara at me?"

If Sailor Moon heard the demon's taunt, she didn't show it. She was focused on one thing, and that was destroying the demon. While her sole focus was on destroying her foe, she could still sense the presence of her friends, even though they were not there physically, they were with her spiritually. "This is your moment," Gilded Rose said. "You only get one shot at this, but your friends and I have faith in you. Make it count."

"Moon Tiara, Magic!" Sailor Moon said, throwing her tiara at the demon as hard as she could.

"Mercury Hailstorm Fury!"

"Venus Crescent Beam Kiss!"

"Earth Rockslide Barrage!"

"Mars Flaming Phoenix!"

"Jupiter Thunder Crash!"

"Midas Bomb!"

Sailor Moon was never more accurate with her tiara than she was at that moment. It, combined with the most powerful attack of each of her friends, was too much for the demon to take. The demon barely had time to let out a scream before it was destroyed. She went to the lifeless body of Metallia, and held her scepter over her. The crystal atop her scepter glowed bright white, and Metallia stirred to life. "Where am I?' Metallia asked. "What happened?"

"It's all over," Sailor Moon said. "You're free of the demon that controlled you, and I made sure it will never control you, or anyone else for that matter, ever again."

Metallia went over to where Beryl's body lay. "What have I done?" Metallia asked, anguished.

"It wasn't your doing," Sailor Moon said. "The demon who controlled you did this. We can save her, but it will take a sacrifice on your part."

"I'll do anything," Metallia said. "Anything to save my dear sister."

"I can bring her back, but for her to survive, you have to share your life force with her," Sailor Moon said. "There's only one way to do that."

"Beryl and I must once again be joined to one another," Metallia said. "If you must, there is only one thing I ask."

"What's that?" Sailor Moon asked.

"Not to join us the way we were born," Metallia said.

"It doesn't matter how you and Beryl are joined," Sailor Moon said. "May I ask why you don't want me to join you the way you were originally joined?"

"The one thing we never liked about being joined back to back is that we could never see each other's faces," Metallia said. "When we were children, we swore that once we gained our magical abilities, the first thing we would do would be to change how we were joined to where we were facing one another, since we would not be able to use our magic to become separate from one another."

If that's your wish," Sailor Moon said, "so be it."

Sailor Moon pointed her scepter at Metallia and Beryl, and the crystal began to glow bright white. She fired a beam of light at the sisters, and they floated in the air, and were enveloped by a pure white bubble of light. When the bubble landed, it disappeared, and Metallia and Beryl stood, now joined face to face by a band of flesh that went from the base of the sternum to the navel. "Metallia?" Beryl asked. "Is it really you?"

"Yes it is, dear sister," Metallia said.

"What happened?" Beryl asked. "Last thing I remember was you killing me, now we're joined the way we talked about when we were children, but I sense you are no longer evil."

"I never was evil," Metallia said. "I was possessed by a demon, but didn't know it. But Sailor Moon saved me. She saved both of us."

"Unfortunately, your salvation came at the cost of my best friends in the world," Sailor Moon said, transforming back to Serena Campbell.

"You saved me," Metallia said. "And reunited me with my sister."

"And you also gave me my best friend back," Beryl added. "Bringing your friends back is the least we could do."

"Might I make a suggestion," Luna said. "When you bring them back, make all of them, Serena included, forget they were ever superheroes."

"But should the need for Sailor Moon, Gilded Rose, and the Sailor Soldiers ever arise," Artemis added, "I would like for Luna and I to be able to restore their memories."

"We can make them forget they were ever superheroes," Metallia said.

"But since they sacrificed so much to bring best friends back together," Beryl added, "we'll return the favor. We'll only erase their memories of being superheroes, but allow them to keep their friendships with each other."

"Agreed," Luna said.

"If there was a way you could help us keep an eye on them," Artemis said, "Help us keep them safe until they're needed again."

"There is a way," Metallia and Beryl said in unison.

EPILOG

SEPTEMBER 8, 1986, SALLY K. RIDE HIGH SCHOOL, 7:50 A.M.

Jake Slater had always liked the first day of school, for some unexplained reason. He found a seat near the front of the class, he watched as everyone filed into class, taking seats, until there were only 2 empty seats in the classroom: one was next to him, the other was next to Molly Carter. He saw the last 2 students enter the class, twin sisters. For some reason, they looked vaguely familiar to him, but he couldn't put his finger on it. He put them down to people he met fleetingly in a dream and thought nothing of it, even when they came to the table where he was sitting. "Hi," one of the twins said. "I'm Alison Taylor," she said.

"And I'm Brianna Taylor," the other twin said. "Alison's sister."

"You mind moving next to that redhead over there?" Alison asked.

"Alison and I kind of need to sit together," Brianna added.

Jake was going to say something, until he noticed that the sisters were joined by a band of flesh that extended from the base of each sister's sternum to her navel. "Sure," Jake said, grabbing his books and moving to the empty seat next to Molly. "Not a problem."

THE END? . . . NOT BY A LONGSHOT. . . EVEN THOUGH THEIR BATTLE AGAINST METALLIA IS THROUGH, THERE ARE STILL MORE STORIES TO BE TOLD. . .
