Chapter 10: Love and Sadness

Night time had arrived and Tomoya and Ryouta were hanging out with Youhei like usual. "Hey, I… decided to prepare myself…" Youhei said as he looked at Ryouta and Tomoya with unusual eyes. "… Oh, well good luck." They responded in unison not really caring. "That's not it! What's normal about that? Hey, you won't listen?!" Youhei asked. Tomoya shook his head. "Nah, it's not something we need worry to worry about anyway." He stated.

"No, Not at all, it's something you should be worried about. Or rather, you two were the ones who greatly changed my life from the start." Youhei said. Ryouta looked at him and then back at his phone "Oh? Well, good luck." He responded, he wasn't really paying attention because he was too busy texting Kyou.

"Listen! I'll say it again, I decided to prepare myself." He stated. Ryouta and Tomoya looked at him and in unison said "Good luck with that." Youhei glared at them "I still haven't said anything!" He exclaimed. "Well, hearing what you said, I figured it'd be the same thing, so I said something in advance." Tomoya said. "It's about Hiragi!" He informed them.

"…About Kappei?" Ryouta asked. "Don't say Kappei, please, I don't want to go back to reality… you see… I just thought that, in this case I shouldn't worry about gender at all. If it's platonic, it's not a problem, right? Love see is, hearts making contact… feelings being linked, right?" Youhei asked.

The three boys turned to look at Kappei who had a smile on his face. "Wel-welcome home!" Youhei greeted in shock. "Welcome home?" Ryouta asked. Kappei smiled, "Eh? Ah, yeah, Sunohara was okay with me so as long as I said that, so I played along." He said. "By the way Hiiragi, truth is I… have something to sa-" he started until Kappei cut him off.

"Oh yeah, Ryouta listen!" Kappei called out. "Hmm?" Ryouta asked as he looked at Kappei. "You see… umm, it's about Ryou. We've decided to go out." He stated with a blush. "This is really sudden, isn't it…?" Ryouta asked. "People who are fated to meet don't need time to attract each other. But she did say that she wanted me to make sure you were okay with it because she looks at you as a big brother figure." He said.

Tomoya looked at Ryouta who sighed. "I'm okay with it because it's you. You seem like a nice person who won't take advantage of her so I'm fine with it." Ryouta stated which earned him a smile from Tomoya. Youhei on the other hand wasn't too pleased as he was spacing out, dumbfounded, as his mouth remained half-open. "Unrequited, eh?' Ryouta asked as he patted Youhei's shoulder. Youhei started to cry as he ran out the room. "Dammit all!" He exclaimed.

The next day during lunch Keiji and Tomoyo were standing in the school hallway talking. "So what did you do during lunch?" Keiji asked. Tomoyo smiled. "Hmm… I had to give an explanation." She replied. "About?" Keiji asked. Tomoyo giggled. "Obviously, for the student council election. The electoral activities have started, Keiji." Tomoyo said.

"Ah, is that so… So you're serious about this." He said. Tomoyo nodded, "Of course. What, did you think I was joking? My decision's been made. There's nothing that'll sway me from this." She stated with a warm smile. Keiji turned towards the window and put his hands on the ledge as he looked out it. "Oh really?" He said in a low tone.

Tomoyo looked at him and was a little worried by his tone. "What is it, Keiji? You don't seem too eager." She said. Keiji continued to look out the window. "Do I look that way?" He asked. Tomoyo nodded, "You do." She replied. Keiji then turned his head to look at her. "Then tell me the truth about what my face really is." He said. Tomoyo raised her eyebrow, "What do you mean?" She asked. He shook his head. "Come on, Tomoyo. Do you really want to enter the student council?" He asked as he turned his body around to face her.

"Yeah… I told you already, I've made my decision, and nothing small's going to sway me at all." She informed him. "Then… how about something not so small?" He asked. This threw her for a loop. "What do you mean?" She asked not really understanding. Not saying anything he gently grabbed her arm and pulled her in. Their lips met, but what was crazy about the situation was Tomoyo could have avoided it, but she didn't, she quietly took it. Keiji separated from her lips, but this time, Tomoyo wanted it. She pulled him back and their lips met again.

Keiji could see one of the students walking by beyond Tomoyo's ear. He swore that they caught everyone's attention. For awhile they stayed like that before parting. "That was fun." Keiji replied as he looked into her eyes, parting away from her lips.

"I want to be with you until the end of school." He said as he held her tight. "So do I…" She replied. "Then let's do that… Let's have fun like this every day. Before I met you, affections like this didn't cross my mind. I was a king inside of a gang, now I'm just an ordinary school boy. You changed who I was." He explained.

"But… It's something I decided. It's something I have to do…" She replied while looking to the ground. "Why? Isn't it important that you spend time with me like this?" he asked. "Whatever's important isn't the problem. I made up my mind. I don't want to give up on anything. I guess, also… inside me, there's also something important." She said.

Keiji then turned back to the window as the wind blew through his hair. "Then, what it is? What should I do? Is it okay if I pray for you to lose in the election?" He asked. She turned to look at him, "Keiji… you really don't want for me to be a part of the council?" she asked.

"How would you answer if someone else from one year below you said that?" He asked. Tomoyo looked to the side "I suppose…" She started.

"If that happened, you'd be irritated, right? You won't have to spend time doing stupid things like this then." He said. "I'll keep pushing on." She said Keiji looked at her for a moment before looking back at the window "By that time, you'll already be different." He stated. "In what way?" She asked. Keiji couldn't answer that question. "As I thought, I can do nothing except pray that you lose the election." He replied.

"That's unfortunate. Then from now on, we're no different from enemies, are we?" She asked in a sad tone. "No…" He replied quickly as if he was cutting her off. "I think lovers is okay." He replied. "Eh?" She said in shock. "Doing that, I think it may strengthen your will." He said as he looked away. She smiled at him. "I see… in that case, I'll look forward to that." She responded.

"Then you don't mind?" He asked. She nodded. "Yeah… what a helpless guy…" She replied with a smile. He lifted her chin with his finger and once again brought their lips together. 'I'm sure that Tomoyo will enter the student council. If it's her, I think she'll realize her dream. No matter what she wishes, she'll go on straight ahead with hope. No matter what obstacle there are, she'll continue to walk this path. Walking on that path, I feel she'll be praised by everyone. I don't know whether that is fate or virtue… It's just that I get the feeling that's what the future will be.' He thought to himself as he confidently held her in his arms.

Ryouta, Kazuyoshi and Tomoya walked down the hallway. A door beside Ryouta opened and he was pulled in by a two hands. "Kyou?" He asked as he looked at his lover. "What is it?" he asked. "Hey, Ryouta… what kind of person is Hiiragi?" She asked. Ryouta raised an eyebrow, "What kind of person? What do you mean?" He asked. Kyou put her finger to her lip. "Last night, Ryou was all happy and everything. Somehow smiling and everything, playing with trumps cards in the room while the lights were off…" She explained.

'That's scary' Kazuyoshi, Ryouta and Tomoya thought in unison. "Ah… those two are going out." He stated. "Eh?! No way?!" She said. "What are you going to do about that?" He asked. She put her left hand on her right arm and expressed a worried look. "B-but Ryou never, told me anything like that…" She said.

"It's embarrassing, isn't it?" He asked. "Ryo… Ryou's keeping secrets from me…" She groaned as she fell to her knees. "Sister can't stick around forever like that, can they?" Ryouta asked. She then stood up and gave Ryouta an evil look to where her eyes were glowing red. "Ryouta! What kind of person is Hiiragi?" She asked in a scowl. "Uh…?" Is all he could get out.

"Where's he come from? Academics? Income?" She asked. "Um… dear?" he said in a nervous tone. "He's the eldest? What's his family like? Is he healthy? Any strange hobbies?" She continued to ask. "Kyou calm down!" he exclaimed, starting to get slightly angry. "There's no way I can! He might become my brother-in-law in the future right?!" She asked in the same tone as him also getting angry.

"This is getting intense." Kazuyoshi stated. Tomoya nodded in agreement as they watched. "You're exaggerating things Kyou…" He said. "But…!" she started until he put a hand on her shoulder. "You may be thinking your sister is close to you, but the truth is you as the older sister are close to her…" He explained but it seemed as though Kyou wasn't trying to hear it.

"A boyfriend… how can Ryou have a boyfriend…" She said. "You're shocked as if she's gone beyond or something?" Ryouta asked. "It's nothing like that at all…" Kyou replied. "Then just leave it be. In any case, it's Ryou, so she'll definitely tell you what'll happen, right?" He asked.

Kyou looked to the ground and sighed "I feel like Ryou's gone far away…" Kyou said in a sad tone. Ryouta saw the hurt in her eyes; he could tell this was really getting to her. "Kyou, you have a boyfriend too… it's only fair that she has one." Tomoya chimed in.

Kyou didn't look at him instead she just slowly walked away as she dropped her shoulders. "A boyfriend… right…" She said slowly which hit Ryouta in his heart a little. He sighed as she opened the door. "Hey isn't this your classroom?" Ryouta asked. "I don't feel like… taking class at all…" She said. "Kyou!" He called out. "Ryouta, Ryou is in your hands. If he hurts her, I'm coming for not only him but for you as well for letting it happen." She said as she walked away in a moping way.

"I'm sorry man, it must hurt knowing that she's not really caring about the relationship between you two." Kazuyoshi said. Ryouta sighed. "I'll just have to try hard to not let it get to me. She's going through things so I'll just keep my distance from her for now." Ryouta replied.

Later that day, Ryouta, Tomoya and Youhei were talking in the hallway. "Hiiragi left a letter saying 'Thank you for your help up until now' you know!' Ahhh! Why'd he leave do quietly?! Even though it might have been impatient to do so yesterday, I could have apologized. He could have at least forgiven me before he left." Youhei said.

"He got his own apartment… I think. He told me he got a job when we were talking yesterday. But anyway what did you do last night that we should know about?" Ryouta asked. "Quiet! The walls have ears." Youhei said.

"Ah… Big brother…"

The boys turned around to see Ryou standing behind them "Ahh! Class rep, save me! Kazuki's doing something I don't like!" He said. "Eh? Uh, umm… If you don't hurry… classes will start. " Ryou stated. Ryouta grinned and then looked at Ryou. "Good timing little sister, you should hear his too. It looks like Sunohara was doing something to your boyfriend." Ryouta said which made Tomoya chuckle.

"Stop it! Class rep, I'm heading off to chemistry before you." Youhei said as he was beginning to walk away. Ryou tugged on his sleeve and stopped him; her eyes were a bit scary…"Sunohara… what were you doing to Kappei?" She asked in a stern tone. Ryouta chuckled 'She's learning from her sister…' He thought to himself.

"Don't say Kappei! Don't say the first name." Youhei whined. "In other words, this guy had an unrequited love for Kappei." Tomoya explained. Youhei growled at Tomoya. "You asshole..! How can you say that here?!" He asked. Ryou looked at Youhei with a shocked look. "Sunohara's that kind of person?" She asked.

"Come on, look! Don't you think that's wrong?!" Youhei said. "Actually that's the truth." Tomoya responded. "Damn you Okazaki, saying that with such a serious face." Youhei complained. "I see… ah but there are people like that… I think. Big sister has a manga she reads, and… it has them…" Ryou explained.

Tomoya looked at Ryouta and smirked. "She reads about that stuff?" He asked. Ryouta glared at him "Shut up…" He replied. "I'm not happy being appreciated like that…!" Youhei replied. "But… Kappei is off-limits…" She said while she strengthened her grip on him. "O-okay…" Youhei said with a nervous look nodding quickly under Ryou's pressure.

"So, what were you doing to Kappei? Hmm?" Tomoya asked. "N… nothing…" Youhei replied. "Well maybe it's like you couldn't hold yourself back so you pushed him down or something?" Tomoya asked. "B,b-b, but he looked so hot coming from the shower, right?!" Youhei asked.

"Sunohara… " Ryou started. "B, but, he hit me in the chin before I could, so is it a crime?" Youhei asked as he desperately tried to defend himself. Ryouta put his hand on Ryou's shoulder. "Come on sis, let's go find Kappei. You should go and console him." He said as he guided her away with Tomoya. Youhei looked in shock. "Guys wait!" He exclaimed.

The next day Ryouta and Tomoya were lying down in Sunohara's room. Ryouta was on the internet on his phone while Tomoya was reading a magazine. As Tomoya put it to the side, Youhei grabbed it and started to read it. "Is it okay for us to remain like this…? Even though the eye colors of those taking the exam around us don't change… It feels like we've been alienated recently in school…" Tomoya said as he looked at Youhei.

Ryouta noticed that Youhei wasn't responding and looked over at him. Youhei let out a big scream that echoed throughout the room. A knock could be heard from the other side of his wall "Shut up!" a voice yelled. Youhei was troubled by the magazine and Ryouta and Tomoya could see it. "What's in there…" Ryouta said as he took the magazine.

Ryouta read it over. "An… interscholastic athletic meet from the past…hmm? Their doesn't seem to be anything… What's this? The tragic idol sprinter… Kappei Hiiragi? Final match on the high school grounds… recommended as a scholarship student for university, Kappei Hiiragi was in a contest for first place and tumbled just before reaching the goal. While on the grounds, he was sent to the hospital. The diagnosis indicated his fibula was…" He read which left everyone dumbfounded.

"That article is a lie right?" Tomoya asked. Ryouta looked at him. "Have you seen him recently?" Ryouta asked. Tomoya shook his head "No, I haven't. I thought he was really busy with work." Tomoya responded.

"Kazuki, you here?"

Misae's voice could be heard from the door as she began knocking. "Eh? Yeah." He responded. As the door opened Misae peeped in, "Hmm? What's wrong?" She asked. "Ah… nothing…" He replied. She nodded. "Well, anyways, you have a guest." She stated. "For me?" He asked. "A girl. You're pretty good." She said.

Ryouta froze up, having a feeling he knew who it was. As he thought Ryou walked in with a sad look on her face. She noticed what Ryouta was holding and her body started to tremble. "Ry…Ryouta…" She choked out. Seeing his face and his expression she fell into his chest and started crying. Misae watched in awe. "Kazuki, you're good." She said. Tomoya looked at her "No, she's a sister to him, that's his girlfriend's sister." He explained.

Ryouta didn't say a word he didn't want to believe the magazine but with Ryou's shivering in his arms… what was written in the magazine was…'Osterosarcoma.' In other words… cancer…

Three minutes later the four of them hung their heads, having nothing to say. "I'll go… get some tea…" Youhei said as he stood up leaving the room. Ryouta knew Youhei couldn't stand the atmosphere, in reality he wanted to run away too, but with Ryou he couldn't do that to her.

"Ryou…" He called out. "Ah… yes…" She responded slowly. "Where is… Kappei right now?" He asked. Ryou looked to the ground. "A hospital… in a nearby city..." She said. Ryouta looked to the ground and sighed. "I see… since when did you find out?" He asked. Ryou continued to look away "Just recently. He took his usual medicine… and I thought it was a bit strange. I didn't know what medicine it was… But when I saw it… the medicine that Kappei was taking, is called codeine." She quickly responded.

"Codeine?" Ryouta and Tomoya asked in unison. Ryou nodded. "It's a painkiller…" She responded. "Taking something like that is… really bad, isn't it…?" Tomoya asked. Ryou nodded. "Osteosarcoma is… a condition where, once diagnosed, you have to take the operation as soon as possible…" Ryou said as she looked at Ryouta.

Ryouta slowly nodded. "Yeah…" he said frankly. "But… Kappei… The operation… He won't… take it…" Ryou said. Ryouta looked at her. "He won't take it?! But, won't the condition be completely cured if taken early?" He asked.

Ryou started to sniffle as she looked into his eyes. "Big brother!" She cried as buried herself in his chest and started to break down and cry. "Ryou…? Wait…" he started. "I'm sorry…! I'm sorry…! I might have been wrong in relying on you… Ryouta! But there's no one else I can ask… Big brother… I'm sorry…" She cried.

He embraced her and looked down at her purple hair, "Why is Kappei refusing the operation?" He asked. "He doesn't want to… He couldn't… bear losing is leg… apologizing he told me that…" she explained. "Kappei…" Ryouta said in a low tone. "I don't want Kappei to die! Even if he loses his leg, I want him to live! If he lives… I'm sure there will be a lot of good things! That's why… that's why… big brother… please… please convince Kappei to take the operation! I don't think I can tell him to… So… please…" She cried.

All Ryouta could say was "Ryou…" Those painful words with against him with her small body. He put his hand on her trembling shoulders as if to calm her down. "Big… brother…" she cried. Wanting to do whatever he could for his little sister he spoke, "I'll go see him for now… I'll try to convince him. I'll do it just for you." He said. She looked up at him and then started to cry again "Big brother!" She cried out. He held on to her tightly as she cried on his chest.
