"I swear to god, Demon, you are getting on my last nerves," I said.
"You are getting on my last nerves," he mimicked me.
"Stop that!"
"Stop that!" I groaned in frustration and sat myself down on the couch across from him. We had made our horribly long journey back to Burgess and I have to say: possessed Jack is the most annoying thing ever. Mund began to like his sassiness half way through our trip ("Can't we keep him like this? He's way more fun"). I, on the other hand, wanted to strangle him.
"Oh, you know you are enjoying this," Demon-Jack said with a wink. I pursed my lips– he was so like Jack and it irritated me– well, to be honest he was much more sassy and cocky. But he could be funny. I guessed for a demon he was okay as far as demons go. He wasn't trying to kill anybody, and that was always a good sign. There was no way I was going to grow to like this demon– he had taken over my best friend/boyfriend. That was not cool.
"Jack– please get control of yourself soon," I begged. His eyes began to flicker again and I held my breath– but sadly they went back all black.
"Quit doing that," Demon-Jack said. "It gives me a right headache. Ugh, and you don't even know how annoying it is listening to this guy the whole time. He talks a lot, did you notice? Oh– he wants to take me on in a fight. Well, good luck to him... Everyone with a brain knows you can't fight a demon." He gave me a 'can you believe this guy' look. Demon-Jack clicked his tongue. "And was it really necessary to light a fire? It's ro-ast-ing!"
He pulled off Jack's blue frosted jumper and threw it to the side of the room. My mum walked in and frowned when she saw it lying on the ground. She glanced nervously at Jack– the whole black eye thing really made her anxious. I couldn't blame her; I hated it as much as she did. My stomach twisted every time I looked at him– it also made me feel sick. Poor Jack. It must be so tormenting not having control of your own body.
"No luck?" She picked up Jack's jumper and gently placed it on the back of the couch. Even she knew how fond real-Jack was of that jumper.
I shook my head. "No. And it's really annoying me."
"It? I prefer to go by demon– more polite, don't you think?" I made a face at my mother as though to say: help me! God knows I couldn't stand to be around Demon-Jack for another minute. "Hey-hey! I know that look– don't get mad at me. Remember, I'm just doing what the big guy asks. To be honest, I was hoping to have a good chat with Scathach. She's far more interesting than..." He looked around the room. "This."
"Then maybe you should–"
"Go back to Ireland? Yeah. You're right, I should–" Demon-Jack went to stand up, but Nightlight pulled him back into his seat.
"You're not going anywhere," Nightlight told him.
"Fine. Fine. I get it; you lot don't trust me. Quite understandable and I don't exactly blame you either." He sounded amused again and that got on my nerves. "I really thought we could have had a happy ending. Oh, well." He shrugged his shoulders.
"I still think we should knock out demon," North suggested, cracking his knuckles. I narrowed my eyes at him and he gave me an innocent smile (which, by the way, looks odd on a guy who has tattoos, is three times your size and is twice your height!). "Just suggestion."
"Uh... I'll keep it in mind," I lied.
Each of us had tried calling to Jack and either he was too weak, or the demon was too strong. I didn't want to believe I had lost Jack to this thing. I just wanted him back to normal. Was that even too much to ask?
"Can't we make a deal with you?" I finally asked him. All eyes in the room stared curiously at me– even my mother quirked a brow up. Demon-Jack leaned forward in his seat looking mildly interested now. He nodded his head, waiting for me to go on. I was about to continue, but he shot up his hand.
"No! I have a better deal! Not even a deal," he said. "A choice." My heart pace picked up. "And you may think it's an easy choice, but sweetie, it's not." I didn't like when he called me that. I pursed my lips and waited for him to continue. "I could lead you back to the big guy. It seems only fair to do since you've all been so kind to me. Or... I could leave Jack's body for you. Now, listen: once Jack's free from me he will not remember anything since I took over his body. These last few days will all be a blank to him."
"How is that a hard choice?" I asked it. It smiled evilly and looked towards Mund.
"He won't remember how to find the Big Guy, won't he not?" Mund muttered.
"For a kangaroo, you're pretty smart," Demon-Jack said. Mund glared at him and he smirked. "As I said: Jack won't remember a thing. And believe me, darling, this place you seek could take you centuries to find. And the Big Guy really likes to torment you lot. First Pitch, then Evil and now me. You can't even imagine the horrors he has in store for you."
"Why can't you just cooperate with us?" Tooth asked him curiously. She flew to my side and narrowed her eyes at him. "Wouldn't it just be easier for everyone?"
"And where's the fun in that? Boo. Yawn. How boring," he replied. "Here's the moral kids: Life is not easy." He laughed as though all of this was hilarious. "Now, have you made a choice?"
I gritted my teeth in frustration. I wanted to punch him a hundred times in the face– he was so infuriating! Out of all the people who he could take over why did it have to be Jack? Can't we just get a moments peace around here? Fate was not on our side, that I was sure of. It was probably the only thing I was absolute about right now. I wasn't torn; I knew what I wanted to pick: Jack. But I could see it in the others eyes– they wanted to find this place as bad as they wanted Jack free.
"You're the most infuriating–"
"Funny," he chimed.
"Cocky-," I spat.
"Truthful," he suggested with a shrug.
"Foul creature that I've ever come across!" From her bed on the floor Bribry began to growl at Jack. I had a feeling he could sense it wasn't really Jack. I marched up to him– I felt so uncomfortable being this close to it in Jack's body. My hand twitched– I really wanted to slap him on the face. I clenched my hand and gritted my teeth. I lowered myself down so that we were face to face. "You better tell me where the guy is or may god help me I will burn you from the inside out!"
"Oh, dearie me. Jack wouldn't like that at all– he's screaming at me to tell you right now," he told me. "Fortunately, your little lightning trick won't effect me at all. However, I'm all up for turning your boyfriend into your roast dinner if you are." Demon-Jack rubbed his ear and winced. "Jeez! This guy can get loud. Is he always this annoying?"
Mund opened his mouth to speak and I shot him a be-quiet-now look. He closed his mouth and crossed his arms across his chest looking disappointed about not being able to reply to that comment.
I sat back down on the seat feeling defeated. I placed my head in my hands trying to block out any noise to allow myself to think. The demon certainly had an answer to everything... And he wasn't going to be persuaded into giving us the location. I was stuck with a choice. Nobody else had answered, so obviously they were allowing me to make the decision– but I couldn't do that. Well, I could certainly make it: Jack. I wanted Jack back. But the others wanted the location. And I had an idea, but I didn't exactly like it. But it was the only thing I could think of on such short notice.
I took in a deep breath and sighed. "Would it be possible for you to find a new host?" I asked him.
The Demon scratched his head. "A new host? Well, that depends, Sophie. It would have to be powerful, dangerous and able to fight."
"And if I allowed you take the host would you then cooperate with us?" He gave me a puzzled look. "Would you show us the location?"
"I might."
"No. That's not good enough," I snapped. "I want your word that you'll help us if I find you a host that won't bother any of us..." Probably only me, I thought.
"Tempting," he admitted. He gave me a thoughtful look and then rolled his eyes (I'm like... 74% sure it rolled its eyes, anyway!). "Fine. I'll do it– but only if I like this host of yours." He smirked. "And it better be less annoying than this guy is." He tapped his skull to show that he meant Jack. My heart could have leapt for joy at the thought of having Jack back again. Sadly I'd still be stuck with listening to this Demon go on and on about things I didn't care about.
"You won't even know it's there," I replied. "Bribry, come here." The arctic fox leapt out of its bed and ran to my side. He sat himself down as though guarding me from dangers. I rubbed its head. "This is Bribry. Smart fox, loyal, dangerous and able to fight..." I gave him a look.
"You want me to host... A fox?" Demon-Jack seemed stunned.
"I've never been at his side at combat yet, but I know he'll be deadly," I rushed on. "And, um... If I gave the fox my blessing he can become immortal. You can host him for as long as you want... No charge." I gave him a small grin, hoping to lighten the mood.
I wasn't sure where the immortal thing came from, but as I said it I felt confident that it was true. Foxes basically treated me as their queen for some reason or other. Hey, I wasn't complaining at all. Foxes were handy sidekicks when it came to battle. But they could also talk for hours (sadly).
Demon-Jack considered all of this as he examined the fox from his seat for more than a minute. It felt longer. My heart drummed in my ears and my palms became sweaty. I looked up to him and noticed his eyes flickering rapidly– he was becoming weaker or he was lowering his defences. Either way, I wasn't bothered.
He sat up straight in his chair. "Quite the offer... Immortality without having to deal with annoying voices inside my, or should I say, their heads." He laughed at his own humour. I gave him a cold look. "Give me a few days to think about it. In the meantime– where's the food? I'm starving!"
