Chapter 10

Like most other days, Arizona Robbins had woken up in bed next to the love her life. Even though she always slept well when in bed with her Calliope, she could always tell when Callie was watching her. It seemed like for hours after Callie had thought she was in a deep slumber that she had leaned on her elbow and chosen to stare at the blonde beauty while she was asleep. Arizona didn't really mind, but whenever Callie did that it meant that something was wrong. What was wrong? She tried asking her numerous times over the past few days, but the Latina would always change the subject.

"Good morning, Calliope." Leaning over to give the brunette a kiss, she couldn't help but notice her girlfriend's appearance. Even though she was still beautiful, there were slight differences that the blonde couldn't help but notice. The Latina's eyes were slightly drooped, with dark bags under them. Her hair was in a messy bun and looked as if she hadn't washed it in a week. When Callie smiled, it didn't quite reach her eyes and it often lasted for barely three seconds. "Are you alright, Calliope?"

Arizona knew Callie so well. Whenever anything was wrong with her, Arizona always seemed to pick up on it the minute she started to feel anything less than happy. "Arizona, I'm fine", she lied, giving Arizona's hand a gentle squeeze in attempts to reassure the blonde. She and Arizona told each other everything, and as much as she hated to lie to her, she was protecting her. What was she supposed to do? Time was ticking and she only had 6 more days before she was supposed to break up with Arizona, the love of her life.

"Okay, Calliope, well we have a date today. I pushed all of my meetings to tomorrow so we could spend the day together. I'm so excited!"

Callie smiled genuinely at the blonde's efforts to cheer her up. It always worked, but it only served to remind her that she had six days left with her blonde beauty. "That sounds great, Arizona. How about you hop in the shower and I'll whip something up for us to eat?"

At that, Arizona frowned. She'd wanted nothing more than to shower with Callie but she also noticed that they hadn't had sex since Callie had started acting strange. Once she saw her girlfriend leave the room, she grabbed her cellphone and dialed Jackson Avery.

"Agent Avery speaking; how may I help you Madame President?"

"Hey Jackson. I need to talk to you about something and I only have a bit of time so I need you to really listen, okay?"

"Of course, feel free to tell me when you're ready."

"Something strange has been going on with Justice Torres. I am sure it's not a personal matter otherwise she would've told me. I'm pretty sure something happened with someone and I don't think it's coincidental to what's been going on lately with our system. Can you speak with her agents and determine if something mischievous has happened that I'm not aware of?"

"Of course, Madame. I'll get in touch with them immediately and call you as soon as I know something."

Once she hung up on Jackson, she headed downstairs to Callie's kitchen and sat down at the island while she watched Callie cook. Usually, she would come down to hear Callie with the radio blasting their favorite songs and listen to Callie's melodic voice echoing throughout the kitchen. This morning, she could only hear the sizzling of bacon and the timer the oven made when Callie's muffins were finished baking. There wasn't a single voice to be heard, and that scared Arizona more than anything. What was Callie hiding?

Callie pretended not to notice Arizona scrutinizing her as she cooked their breakfast. What she did notice was that Arizona's hair wasn't wet. "Arizona, what were you doing up there?"

Confused eyes met eyes of accusation. "I'm not sure what you mean Calliope."

"I think you know, considering your hair is completely dry. What were you doing up there?"

"Nothing Calliope…just making our bed…"

"Okay Arizona, so if I go upstairs the bed will be made?"

Nothing else was said for the rest of breakfast. All that could be heard was the clattering and scraping of forks on plates as they ate in silence. After the kitchen was cleaned, it was Arizona who broke the silence. "I don't understand why you're upset with me, Calliope."

Giving her a look that could kill, Callie simply stated "You lied to me, Arizona."

That was enough to set Arizona off. "YOU WANNA TALK ABOUT LIES, CALLIOPE? YOU'VE BEEN LYING FOR FOUR DAMN DAYS!"

The Latina hung her head in response. She knew it had affected Arizona, but she hadn't known it'd affected her this much. "I'm sorry…"

"Are you? You haven't let me touch you, and you've been distant and won't tell me what's wrong with you. I am your girlfriend and I'm here for you. You can tell me anything."

By then, Callie had started to cry hysterically. Rushing over to her, Arizona quickly scooped the Latina into her arms and started rocking her back and forth to comfort her. In the midst of it all, Arizona's cell phone pierced through the sound of Callie's tears.

Releasing a shaky breath, Callie asked, "Are you gonna get that?"

Nodding, Arizona answered Agent Avery's call. Holding her finger up and walking into the other room, she began to listen to what he was saying. "I'm sorry Madame President, I know you took off today to spend with Justice Torres, but what I have to tell you is very important and I'd appreciate it if you both would come down here as soon as possible. "

Once he hung up, Arizona let out a breath she didn't even know she was holding. She was relieved that she would know what was bothering Callie, but she was also afraid that they would uncover something that she didn't want to know. Walking into the room, she noticed Callie sitting on the couch. Once she sat down next to her, she pulled the brunette's hands into her own and sighed.

"Calliope, there's something we need to discuss."

Oh no. Arizona wasn't breaking up with her because she'd been acting weird was she? Even though she knew she had to break up with Arizona she didn't want to do it six days early. Immediately, she began choking up with tears. Why had she used her last four days with Arizona to act weird and give her the cold shoulder? The best person that'd ever happened to her was leaving her and there was nothing she could do about it. Shit. The only thing pulling her out of her thoughts was Arizona shaking her.

"Callie, sweetheart, where did you just go?"

Shaking her head, she managed a half-hearted smile and gestured for the blonde to tell her what she wanted to tell her.

"I called Agent Avery and spoke to him about how weird you were acting and he talked to your agents about anything strange happening and they've found a lot. I want to remind you that I love you and if there's anything you need to tell me, I'm here to listen. Let me rephrase that, there's something you need to tell me and I'm going to be an amazing girlfriend and listen to you while you tell me."

When Callie still looked reluctant to tell Arizona, she placed a hand on her thigh and squeezed to show Callie she would wait however long it took for the brunette to tell her what was wrong. When Callie got up and walked out of the room ,she didn't know whether to stay put or follow but she came back into the room almost immediately with an envelope in hand.

On her way past Arizona, she dropped the envelope on her lap and sat down. "What's this?"

Callie didn't respond, she only gave her a look that told her she'd better open it and read.

As Arizona read the letter that Callie opened four days ago, her face almost instantly drained of color. Dropping the piece of paper on the coffee table, she pulled her girlfriend in her arms once again. Through tears, she said, "Calliope, I know you're scared. If I were you, I'd be scared to. Sweetheart, I'm the president of the United States. While it's a lot easier to kill you than it is me, you don't have to worry about either of us. Agent Avery is working his ass off to bring down whoever this is that's been messing with us these past few months. I know you breaking up with me would be to protect me and I love you so much for that, but it isn't necessary. My team is taking care of this and will catch whoever it is. I love you so much, Calliope Torres, you hear me?"

When she felt a nod, she leaned in and brushed her lips against her girlfriend's. It was a chaste kiss, but Arizona leaned in and deepened the kiss, moaning at the contact. It felt so good to be intimate with Callie again, but they had a meeting to attend. Pulling away, it felt even harder when Callie groaned at the loss.

"Calliope as much as I'd love to continue this, we have a meeting with Jackson Avery. He says they uncovered a lot of information."

The two gathered their things and headed off to the Whitehouse to find out who the nasty monster is that kept threatening them.

When they arrived in the conference room, it was full of Arizona's team with Agent Avery at the head of the table. After the women took their seats, Arizona took out her laptop so she could take much needed notes.

"I believe you all know why I am here. Our system has been shut down by somewhere in New Mexico. Agent DuQuette and Agent Smith will explain their suspicions to you all right now."

Agent DuQuette started to speak first. "Well, when Justice Torres and I were out on an outing, a strange man spoke to her. His name was Gary Stark. He looked very familiar and I can't place his face but I know him from somewhere. He was inquiring about the threat received by President Robbins about her relations with Justice Torres. He appeared slimy and dangerous and I felt as if I had to protect Justice Torres from him."

After the clicks of laptop keyboards and the scribbles of pencils on paper silenced, everyone turned to Agent Smith so he could give his thoughts. "Four days ago, the twentieth, a man came to the door. He had a camera around his neck, so I was guessing he was a reporter of some kind. He handed me an envelope for Justice Torres. I didn't read what was inside, I only checked to make sure that nothing harmful was inside the letter since it was hand delivered. I handed it to Justice Torres and that was that."

Once again, everyone waited while notes were taken and Agent Avery called Callie to speak. Once the letter was shared with everyone, Agent Avery pulled up a picture of a man. He assumed someone recognized him because the gasps of Callie and her agents were evident. "Agent DuQuette, is this the man that you and Justice Torres encountered?"

"Yes."

Turning to Agent Smith, he paused but continued. "Agent Smith, is this the man that appeared at Justice Torres' house and delivered the letter to you?"

"Yes."

Agent Avery took a moment to let the room process the information before continuing. "This is Gary Stark, the senator of New Mexico, Robert Stark's brother. He hides behind his reporter façade but this man has three doctorates in Computer Science and another three in Software Engineering. While this may not have looked suspicious, he was an Agent for President Nixon until he was fired for using computer software for suspicious activity. I don't think it's a coincidence that Madame President had a run in with Senator Stark over Gay Marriage a few months ago, our system is down, and we're receiving threats."

He paused, giving everyone in the room time to process the information he had just given. "I believe this task will be very easy to settle now that we know what we're dealing with. The threats you have been receiving, Madame President and Justice Torres, are completely empty. While I will ensure that you both have an extra agent with you at all times, I don't see any real harm coming your way. Any questions?"

When the room remained silent, Arizona rose to speak. "I couldn't ask for a better team. You all have been on this since I mentioned it and have gotten to the bottom of it. As for Robert Stark, he will obviously be impeached and his brother will be placed in prison most definitely, and I thank you all for being such amazing people. Thank you so much Agent Avery, we couldn't have done this without you."

Receiving a nod from him, she took Callie by the hand and led her into the Oval Office. "How are you holding up?"

Callie started to shake her head, it was too much. Too much had happened this past week. The sting of her hot tears rolling down her face only made it even more real. "I'm just…overwhelmed. I love you so much and you have no idea how scared I was. I was scared every second you weren't with me that I'd get a phone call that you were killed because I was being stubborn. Arizona, I would never leave you but if it meant saving your life I'd leave you in a heartbeat."

Arizona only nodded, because if it came down to that and the positions were reversed, she'd do the same. Hugging Callie closer, her silent message told her that she was stuck with her. Forever.
