Chapter 10

William Bell- District 10

I am awakened by the sound off a cannon and when I look outside the cave I found late last night, as the wind began to pick up,there is white snow everywhere, and where the vast plains used to be there are luscious green fields. I thought I heard rain last night, but no rain makes fields grow that fast, there must have been something in the rain that made the grass grow and the Gamemakers must have changed the weather.

The fire I lit last night is down to a pile of glowing embers and it does nothing to warm me. I pile it up with sticks that I snapped of the bushes on the way up the mountains so I could cook any animals I encountered. The fire is right at the back of the cave so most of the smoke escapes through crags in the rocks. Some smoke goes out the mouth of the cave so I can only hope it is not visible from far. Even with the fire my lips are blue, my toes are starting to get numb and I hover all over and, onto of it all my throat is parched. The only things I salvaged from the cornucopia are an empty bottle, some string, some dried fruit and a small knife. The weather is both a blessing and a curse as I can collect some snow from outside and melt it above the fire to ease my dry throat but nothing can help the cold.

As I go outside to collect the snow a silver parachute floats down from the sky and land at my feet. I hastily open it and inside are some thick boots, a hat and a coat. They are the same clothes I got a glimpse of in the Capitol when my stylist pulled out the clothes for the parade. I was confused when my stylist gave my the thin jacket and shoes for the arena. When I pull the warm clothes on they provide instant relief and I feel like I am back in District 10 under the warm sun.

I go back inside and hold the bottle of snow above the fire and it begins to melt. It becomes water fast but with my parched lips it seems to take aeons. When it has melted I drink the entire bottle in a few gulps. When I go out to collect more snow to melt I notice that there are foot prints, fresh ones, leading up to the ledge above the cave. I sprint into the cave and grab the few belongings I have and sprint out. But I am not fast enough. A tall boy with a wiry frame and brown hair springs down from the ledge. He does not attack me but he does not speak to offer an alliance either.

Although he is tall he is very thin. He has a little muscle but I could probably take him, he doesn't have warm clothes and he shivers all over. The only thing he seems to have to his advantage is a large backpack that I expect is filled with food and supplies. He offers his hand out to me and I take it. I have decided what I am going to do.

"Allies?" he says, " I know I don't look like much, but i have food and supplies and I can throw a dagger." His accent hints of District 12, the district of the victor from last year, so he has a good mentor with fresh knowledge but there is a chance that his mentor has chosen to see the girls through to the end and puts all the sponsor points into parachutes for her. God I hope Vivan is alright.

"Ok, I have I fire that you can warm yourself by, I'm just going to collect some snow to melt into water." I hope I sound convincing because if I don't I'm toast.

"Thank you, by the way my name is Dakota."

I nod, "William." He smiles weakly and goes inside the cave. I breath deeply and try not to think about what I am going to do. I pull out my knife and tread as lightly as I can after him. He has already made himself comfortable by the fire and he is busy warming his hands. I sneak towards him and with a swift motion drive the knife into the large vain in his neck and the cannon goes off. "Sorry" I whisper. I melt another bottle of snow over the fire, collect his things and take of down the mountain as fast as I can. While I run I say a silent prayer asking for forgiveness.

I head in the direction of the meadows to the left of the cornucopia in the hopes that I will find animals and edible plants. I hope that I won't find any other tributes until much later. I keep steady on my toes and try not to think about what I have just done.
