Chapter Ten
Almost a month has passed since Chloe and Beca had talked on the couch and cuddled. They began communicating better with each other and getting familiarised with each other again. Everyone at the hospital like Aubrey and Stacie noticed that since Chloe and Beca were talking again, Chloe was coming out of her "shell."
She was noticeably brighter and happier and she was finally getting better sleep like a normal person – although she still worked crazy hours at the hospital, she knew her limit better. She wasn't just existing anymore like she had been; she's started living again.
Aubrey was ecstatic, to say the least. She missed her best friend, the Chloe she knew and loved before she became someone entirely different (not that that would change how much she loved her childhood best friend). From what Chloe had told her, Beca was in the process of getting custody of Lindsay and finding a house. She still had her guard up when it came to Beca, but she was happy the brunette was back in Chloe's life, even if it's just bits and pieces, working through things right now.
Over the last few weeks, Beca and Chloe were spending more time together. Once in a while, depending on the time and other things like tiredness or loneliness, Beca would stay the night. They were far from being back to normal, but they were both doing whatever they could to make it work.
Chloe's phone rang as she was walking out to her car after a hectic night in the hospital. "Hello?" She answered, skillfully holding the phone in between her ear and shoulder.
"Hey, I was thinking about maybe picking up some food, Chinese, if you're feeling up to it and coming over? I have some news." Beca replied, the edges of her lips tilting upwards.
Chloe checked the time on her watch when she got into her car and changed the side her phone was on to the other ear. "Uh, yeah, that's fine. I'm kind of tired though, so I don't know how good of company I'll be tonight."
"Alright, yeah. No problem. Are you sure you want me to come over tonight?" The brunette questioned sincerely.
Chloe nodded though Beca couldn't see it and started her car, "Yeah, it's no problem. I mean, if you don't want to come over, I don't have a shift tomorrow and we can grab breakfast or something."
"I'll see you at your place soon. Bye." Chloe smiled softly and hung up after Beca said bye.
Truth was, Chloe was happy to see Beca more often now. She felt like her old self and she loved it. She also hoped that she could meet Lindsay soon. She didn't admit it to Beca, but she was more than upset that she never mentioned having a daughter. Chloe has been wanting kids for a few years now, but never really mentioned anything in fear it would scare Beca off.
Before she knew it, she was pulling into her driveway, next to Beca's car, where the brunette was presumably keeping warm from the cold fall night. She heard what sounded like one of Beca's mixes playing, but wasn't too sure. When she looked over at the car as she was grabbing her purse, she saw a younger girl in the backseat.
Beca, who even though she was listening to music, was paying attention to Chloe and got out of the car, the little girl following her cue. They walked inside behind Chloe.
"Hey, sorry I'm a little late." Chloe apologised as she kicked off her shoes and put her purse and keys down.
Beca waved her off, "I was probably early," she said, taking the Chinese into the kitchen. "I hope you're okay with meeting someone tonight."
After Chloe put her hair up and pushed a few stray away, she really noticed that Beca had a shadow. She figured it was Lindsay, but didn't want to say anything. She just walked into the kitchen to find Beca serving the food.
"Chloe," Beca started nervously, watching Chloe. "This is Lindsay, my daughter."
Chloe smiled at the young girl, who smiled shyly in return. "Hi, Lindsay. It's nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too, Chloe." Lindsay said in a voice so soft it was almost a whisper. She seemed to almost curl into Beca's side, hiding her face in the older brunette's shirt.
Beca smirked, putting her hand on Lindsay's head. "Sorry, she's a little shy."
"Oh, nothing like you." Chloe teased, glancing between the two. "So, Lindsay, what do you like to do for fun?"
Lindsay shrugged softly, swallowing before answering the redhead. "I play soccer. Beca's come to a few games; she said I'm really good."
Chloe smiled, quirking a brow at Beca. It was clear that the two were still getting used to each other, but Chloe could understand. "Well, if I have some free time soon, I might just have to come to one."
Lindsay seemed to brighten up at this. "Really? You'd come? With Beca?" In a soft voice she murmured, "My mom couldn't come to many…"
Chloe nodded. "I will make sure my schedule is clear for your next game. What position do you play?"
"Forward." As Lindsay went on to talk about soccer and the games she's played, both Beca and Chloe noticed how natural this felt. Almost as if they never split up and Lindsay was their child.
Chloe noticed how Lindsay quirked up when talking about soccer, like there was nothing else in the world. The same way Beca was with mixing. She loved it.
Before either of the two knew it, Lindsay was passed out on the couch and Beca and Chloe were sitting contently watching some movie – that Beca really wasn't paying attention to, but was still spending time with Chloe.
As Beca looked at the time on her phone, she sighed softly. "We should get going, it's late."
Chloe shook her head and whispered. "No, it's okay. Stay here. There's a bed in the spare bedroom she can sleep in."
Beca looked at Chloe momentarily then Lindsay. "Are you sure?"
"Positive." The two women got up, Beca carefully picking up the sleeping brunette and walking into the spare bedroom down the hall. She watched Beca set Lindsay down gently on the bed and cover her up. She always felt that Beca would be a good mother, and she finally got to see it, and she was right. Beca was good.
As Chloe started walking to her bedroom, she heard Beca going the opposite direction. "Where are you going?" She asked, looking over her shoulder.
Beca was puzzled, "I – I was going to sleep on the – "
"Nope. I thought we already established this?" Chloe asked, pulling Beca in the direction of the bedroom. "The couch isn't very comfortable to sleep on anyway."
Beca complied, letting Chloe pull her into the bedroom. She wasn't going to say it out loud, at least not yet, but she really loved sleeping in the same bed as Chloe again. Even before they started dating, Chloe would cuddle up next to Beca and eventually fall asleep, leaving their legs a tangled mess in the morning.
And that's exactly what Beca woke up to in the morning. Chloe's legs tangled with hers, her head on her chest and an arm across Beca's torso, keeping the brunette close; like she was afraid she would run again if she let go.
The brunette slowly and softly untangled herself from Chloe, making sure to cover her sleeping form up before she went into the kitchen to make breakfast. Although they were moving slowly still, getting acquainted, Beca was determined to do whatever she could to prove herself to Chloe again. And proving herself was hard. Chloe definitely didn't make forgiving people easy.
As Beca was in the kitchen, dancing and singing along to music as she made breakfast, she didn't hear Chloe walk in. The redhead walked in with her hair a disarray, stifling a laugh as she silently slid on a chair at the kitchen island, watching Beca.
"I never remember you like this when we were married. Or dating, for that matter." Chloe teased.
Chloe's voice made Beca jump and turn around suddenly. "Oh, you're up!" She said with a smile. "Yeah, I wanted to charm you pants off," She winked.
Chloe playfully rolled her eyes, "Always a people pleaser." She sat with her elbow on the table, hand supporting her chin. "Sleep good last night?"
"As good as I always do with you on top of me." The brunette smirked.
"I do not sleep on top of you!" Chloe gasped.
"Yeah, okay. Just like you don't hog the blankets," Beca teased.
"Okay, maybe I do hog the blankets, but I get cold easily." She pouted.
They continued to tease each other until breakfast was ready and Beca went to go wake Lindsay up. She opened the door and called the little girl's name.
"Lindsay, it's time to get up."
"Mmmf, let me sleep" She mumbled in response, pulling the covers over her head.
Beca chuckled, knowing she was the same exact way. "Okay, I guess Chloe and I will eat all the pancakes ourselves."
Beca got closer to Lindsay's sleeping form, pulling the blanket down where she was met with a piercing navy blue eye.
"Pancakes? Uh, uh, pancakes are life." The small brunette practically rolled out of bed, yanking her foot out of the twisted up blankets and almost ran into the kitchen.
Chloe laughed, seeing her lithe figure slide into the kitchen. "Well, I think you got up easier than Beca ever did. Hungry?"
Lindsay nodded eagerly, her eyes widening as she saw the pancakes. She sat down just as Beca came back and Chloe put a stack on plates for each of them.
"Definitely related to you," Chloe stage whispered as she nudged Beca slightly, a smirk on her lips.
Beca just nodded; too busy to talk because she was currently stuffing pancakes in her mouth.
Chloe shook her head, slowly eating so as not to make a mess unlike Beca and Lindsay. When it came to pancakes, Beca was like a rabid animal. She practically needed them to live.
After breakfast and cleaning up, Chloe went to change. She came out in a black V-neck tee shirt and dark denim skinny jeans, throwing her hair up into a messy ponytail.
"I don't have work today, but I am on call, so if there's anything you guys want to do, I'm free." Chloe said, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
Over the past few weeks she's been getting more sleep than she ever used to and she couldn't lie when she said she was happy she was finally sleeping. That light that she used to have was starting to come back and she was starting to look less beyond her years than she has in a long time. She felt refreshed and she loved it.
Beca was currently showing a mix to an amused Lindsay who seemed to love the music. Her head was bobbing and she was talking to Beca about the songs. Chloe smiled to herself and sat down on the couch, one leg pulled under her as she held a fresh cup of coffee.
She knew Aubrey would want to hear all about this at work tomorrow. As much as she loved Aubrey, the blonde's overprotectiveness could get a little overwhelming. Through the years she'd gotten used to it, though. Her and Aubrey came from completely different families.
Aubrey's dad being a strict, strive for perfection colonel in the Army and Chloe's parents being the nice, supportive, do-what-you-want-that-makes-you-happy parents that stood by their children no matter what.
Chloe was pulled from her thoughts by a voice that sounded far away. "Chloe? Did you hear me?"
She shook her head free of her thoughts and looked at the source of the voice, "I'm sorry. What were you saying?"
"I was asking if you wanted to go to the park with Lindsay and I since it's a nice day."
"Oh," The redhead nodded, "Of course I'd like to go."
"Hope you're okay with playing a little soccer." Lindsay spoke up with a bright smile lighting her features.
"Did I ever tell you I played soccer in high school? I was the captain my senior year." Chloe smiled in response.
"You were?" Beca asked clueless. "You never told me."
Chloe shrugged, "You never asked." She replied in a teasing tone.
She stuck her tongue out as she stood up from the couch to put the coffee mug in the sink. Afterwards, she walked towards the two brunettes who were currently slipping her shoes on and she did the same. Chloe grabbed her keys, wallet and phone, seeing no need to bring her purse since they were going to the park.
"I'll drive," Beca said, unlocking her car. Chloe walked around to the passenger side and got in, watching Beca gently help Lindsay get situated in her booster seat since she was still too small to ride with just a seatbelt.
She let out a content sigh, waiting as Beca finally got settled in and they made their way to the park. The ride to the park was driven in relative silence aside from Lindsay's excited ramblings about anything and everything, and Chloe singing along softly to the radio.
Soon, they arrived at the park and Lindsay darted out as soon as the car was parked, Chloe behind her then Beca once the car was shut off.
They stopped at an empty field where Lindsay dropped her soccer ball and they all started playing, Chloe noticing Aubrey and Stacie in the distance.
"I'll be right back," Chloe said, jogging up to the blonde and brunette.
"Hey Chloe!" Stacie said with a smile.
"Hey guys," Chloe said with a tight-lipped smile. "Whatcha doing?"
"Oh, just taking a walk… Oh, is that Beca?" Aubrey sidetracked, squinting to get a better look, "And either a clone or mini-me with her?"
Chloe chuckled softly, moving a piece of hair behind her ear. "That's her daughter, Lindsay."
"They seem cozy with each other," Aubrey observed, pursing her lips.
Chloe nodded, "Well, Beca is in the midst of legally getting custody back. They spent a lot of time together when Beca was away…"
"Can we meet her?" Stacie asked.
Chloe shrugged, "It's up to Beca. I'm sure Lindsay wouldn't mind more people to play soccer with though."
Aubrey groaned and the three of them walked up to the two brunettes.
"Aubrey, Stacie, hey." Beca said somewhat nervously. Not having seen them, well Aubrey since she was in the hospital. Lindsay looked between the women curiously.
"Lindsay, these are my friends Aubrey and Stacie." Chloe said gently, pointing to each as she said their names.
"Wow, it's scary how much they look alike," Stacie murmured when Lindsay was out of ear shot.
"She's a good kid though. I mean, her and Beca stayed over last night and this morning it was almost like Beca never left and Lindsay was ours. I loved it."
Aubrey smiled faintly, "Don't let your guard down too much, Chloe. I'm not trying to be a bitch or anything, I promise. I'm just looking out for you."
Chloe nodded, pulling her cardigan closer to her as there was a slight breeze.
Soon, the three girls were back in Beca's car and going back to Chloe's house. Lindsay was obviously fighting off sleep, so Chloe spoke lowly to Beca.
"How's the – would it be considered adoption since she's your biological daughter?" Chloe raised her brow, trying to figure out what the word would be.
Beca smirked, "For someone who would have to deal with some of this stuff from working in a hospital, you don't know what it's called?"
"I'm a doctor, not a lawyer or anything."
Beca laughed, "We're getting there. Her mom is having a hard time giving up her rights. I mean, she did raise her and was more of a mom than me… Does this make me a bad person?"
Chloe was surprised Beca asked that. She knew Beca has always had her faults, and hated being vulnerable. "No, Beca. Of course that doesn't make you a bad person. When you gave her up, that made you a stronger person. You wanted to give her a life you knew you wouldn't have been able to give her. "
Chloe looked at Beca, "If the roles were reversed, I don't know what I would've done. Even now I have no idea what I would do."
Bec took in the words that Chloe sad and thought hard about them. Wordlessly, she slipped her fingers in between Chloe's, bringing the redhead's hand up to her mouth and kissing it softly.
"I regret not telling you sooner." Beca barely whispered. If Chloe hadn't been paying attention the brunette, she was sure she wouldn't have heard her.
Beca pulled into Chloe's driveway, putting the car in park. "I would come in, but Lindsay is asleep and I need to get home anyway."
Chloe nodded, opening her door when she felt a hand stop her from leaving.
"Chloe?"
"Yeah, Beca?"
"C-can I kiss you?"
A smirk fought its way onto Chloe's lip before she turned back around to face Beca.
A calloused but soft hand came up to Chloe's face, cupping her cheek softly. When their lips touched, it felt like the very first time Chloe had kissed Beca. Her stomach was doing flips and she could not only feel, but see fireworks.
Chloe pulled away slowly after a minute, looking at Beca with that old flare in her eyes. She got out of the car, only to walk over to Beca's open window and stick her head in slightly.
"Goodnight, Beca. Drive safe."
The smile on Beca's face made her look like a little kid who couldn't wait to open presents on Christmas morning. Before she could say anything, Chloe was already unlocking her front door and walking in.
Once Chloe closed the door, she leaned against it, letting out a content sigh. She hadn't felt that intensity when Beca kissed her in a long time. She needed that.
She never felt hatred, anger, or resentment towards Beca since they started fresh and gave the brunette a chance.
That kiss was the start of a new chapter with Beca and Chloe. She knew that kiss meant something good was going to happen, and she couldn't wait.
She felt that her, Beca and Lindsay will be a family soon.
She just knew it.
