Castle beats a hasty retreat, grabbing his jacket from Javi and backing out of the breakroom as fast as he can, feet scrunching on something but too preoccupied with the crazy antics of the two cops to bother looking down.
As soon as the door closes behind the writer, the two cops look at each other and then Kevin shows Javi the phone, a grin breaking out on his face.
"Quick, lets tidy this up before someone walks in …"
Ryan begins to gather up the boxes he'd knocked onto the floor while Espo grabs some paper towels and wipes the mess they've left on the floor. As soon as the place looks respectable they turn to the phone and Ryan sweeps his thumb across the screen … a QWERTY keypad pops up and he swears under his breath.
"What?" asks Espo
"He's got a custom code, it could be anything and we've only got five attempts!"
"Ok, so let's just think what it could be … BECKETT?"
"Could be … but uppercase, lowercase, mixed?"
"I know … NIKKIHEAT!" says Espo proudly.
"Yeah, good one! Let's keep that in mind …." pulling out his notepad and scribbling both suggestions down. Espo looks over his shoulder as Ryan recites the names with a frown on his face, "BECKETT, NIKKIHEAT … how about ROOK&HEAT … NOOKIEHEAT …"
"Man! That sounds sooo wrong on all sorts of levels," says a disgusted Espo.
"Yeah, there's a cream for that …"
"TMI bro … TMI!"
A slightly sheepish Ryan starts throwing out more ideas "ROOKANDHEAT – HEATANDROOK – NOOKIEROOK – ROCKYNOOK …."
"Really!?" Javi giving him a disappointed shake of the head as Ryan grimaces is self-depreciation.
"What if he's mixed their names up? Like say KATEANDRICK – RICKANDKATE – RICKKATE – KATEDICK …. I mean KATERICK …. Shit! Now you've got me at it!"
They let out a couple of sighs, shake their heads and have a moment's silence, then Ryan says, "ALEXIS …. you think it'd be that simple?"
"Nope, but it is Castle … how about CASTLE …. nah!"
"I know! CASTLELOVESBECKETT …. nope, if she caught him typing that in it would really be dangerous, Lanie would have to extract bullets from some painful places!"
"Ok, how about FEEDTHEBIRDS? …. nah!" A shake of unconvinced heads.
"What if its letters and numbers … what's Beckets year of birth?"
"Nineteen seventy-nine … so, BECKETT1979, or the other way round?"
"We could always take it round to Tory, she could find it out for us?"
"How'd we explain it to her?"
"I don't know! Say we found it and need to know who it belongs to ..."
"Like that's not going to get back to Beckett?"
"Uh! You're right. How many goes can we risk?"
"Three, four at most, otherwise Castle's going to be locked out and you know what that means!"
"Yeah, Momma bear's gonna be on the prowl. Talking of which … I wonder how that's going?"
"I don't know but, we'd best get into this phone before we both lose our crown jewels!"
Just then the door swings open and they both spin round, Ryan guiltily dropping the phone into the nearest hiding place. Castle's standing in the open doorway, hand on the doorknob, wary eyes on the two cops, both feet as far out the door as he can get them without falling flat on his face. "You guys seen my phone?" he asks suspiciously.
They do their best to feign innocence, turning to look around them, Javi bending over and looking under the table … they turn back, shrug innocently and a puzzled Castle backs out of the room again, closing the door behind him. They both remain watching the door for several heartbeats, then Javi turns to Ryan, "Where d'you hide it bro?"
Ryan looks a bit apologetically at Espo, turns and picks up the container of Khao phan phak with the sweet chili sauce … and tips it towards his partner. Espo cranes his neck and looks into the container, seeing Castle's phone protruding from the rather sticky contents. He shakes his head, and inconsequently adds, "Well that phan's phak'd for sure…"
Ryan, unable to resist glancing at the box of Luk chin ping says, "Yeah, we'll be lucky to get a ping outta that."
Espo shakes his head, pushes the other container across in front of Ryan and says "Well, you'd better wear those then."
Ryan takes one look at the Thong yip and shakes his head emphatically, pushing it back to Espo and adding "I reckon Lanie would prefer to see you in those!"
Khao phan phak: Khao phan are thin, steamed rice sheets made from the fermented batter of rice flour mixed with water, often served as a wrap for stir-fried vegetables.
Luk chin ping: Meatballs made from fish, pork, beef or chicken are grilled on a stick and served with a spicy and tangy dipping sauce. The ones shown on the image are made with pork and beef. It is commonly sold from street stalls in Thailand.
Thong yip: Thong yip is, like foi thong, made from egg yolks. The difference is that instead of being thread-like, thong yip are shaped like flowers.
