Chapter Ten: All Falls Down
Granddad was cheesing as he packed his bags. The last person for the Jamaica was finally found. They had the previous winners wait until all 10 winners were announced and received their tickets. He was packing up that Thursday night. His mind was on all the bitches, all the hoes that he'd snatch while he was down there. He went over to his drawer and took out four hundred dollars. He hoped those nappy headed boys wouldn't run through all this money for food, but if they did, oh well that's all they were going to get so they would have to make it last. He picked up his phone and called Uncle Ruckus.
"What you want nigga?" he greeted.
"Ruckus, don't forget you're looking after the boys tomorrow."
"Aw praise White Jesus; I did say I'd look after them crazy niggas didn't I? Alright I'll see those monkeys won't get shot up. You gon' pay me right nigga?"
"Of course..." granddad said through gritted teeth, trying to ignore the insults.
"Alright, bye Robert. Enjoy yo' time in Monkey Country." He hung the phone up before he had to curse that one eyed fool out. He walked out his room and over to the boys room, but stopped when he heard them downstairs playing a video game.
"GET YOU SOME! GET YOU SOME!" He heard Riley yell. He did a small smile and made his way downstairs. He stopped and watched as the two brothers spent time together. Huey had a tense look on his face and stuck his tongue out to the corner of his mouth, as if that were to help him win.
"You're going to die peasant." Huey growled as he smashed the buttons. Riley scoffed. Huey grunted at something Riley did to him.
"What the fuck was that?" Huey seared, not seeing his granddad at the stairs. Riley was yelling and shaking the controller.
"KILL HIM! FINISH HIM! AHHHHHHHHHH!" Riley screamed when Huey dealt the last blow on Dead or Alive, making Riley jump up and tackling him to the floor.
"You cheating ass nigga!" he playfully began to choke him. He shook Huey and began laughing.
"You. Cheating. Ass. Nigga! I hate you!" He repeated. Huey pushed him off and put Riley in a headlock and began rubbing his head roughly. Riley bit Huey's arm and snarled like a dog, trying to get out of Huey's hold. Granddad shook his head and laughed out loud at their playfulness. They jumped and broke apart.
"Granddad!" their breathing was ragged as they stood to their feet.
"I hate to intrude on you all's brotherly time, but I just wanted to remind you two of Ruckus' arrival tomorrow." The brothers groaned.
"Please don't get him. We old enough to look out for ourselves, please granddad!" Riley begged.
"Nigga hush! No more room for discussion!" Granddad walked to the kitchen.
"Oh, and ya'll watch ya'll mouths in my mothafuckin' house! Cursin' and shit like ya'll own the gat damn place!" He shouted. Riley and Huey looked at each other before following their guardian in the kitchen.
"Granddad so crazy." Riley laughed. They ate veggie burgers for dinner and the brothers were forced to listen to Granddad tell tales of him in his young days, but honestly? They wouldn't want any other night at the table to be different.
...
Caesar whistled as he made his way down the street. He snuck out the house when Tamara went to sleep. How dare she make him go to these stupid therapy sessions, he was mad as hell, not crazy. Sure he did some…questionable things in New York, why a nigga gotta be crazy because his past fucked up? Because his birth family fucked up he gotta be crazy? He pushed someone off a roof, so what? The nigga tried to cheat him out his money! So what he made people get into fights at school? It's their bad they listen to rumors, not him. So what he stabbed a dog? Oh yeah, that was a story no one liked to tell. When he was 10, his neighbor's dog had bit him when they accidentally let go of the leash.
'Oh I'm so sorry Cease! This dog so wild, we're going to send him to obedience class.'
'What breed of dog is that anyway?' Caesar asked, not hiding the hatred in his eyes as he glared down at the puppy.
'A lab/retriever mix.' Linda, his neighbor said sheepishly.
'Oh…well you better be careful…he might be a dead breed if he was to bite the wrong person.' He looked at her before walking in his house. A week later he was found in her backyard stabbed after being poisoned. Yeah he did it, but he couldn't make them prove it was him who did it but Linda was salty towards him ever since. He shrugged at the memories. He don't have issues, people around him do. Huey doesn't have any issues with him, Riley didn't mind him…Ming however was an interesting case. Caesar didn't show it, but…no he didn't like that bitch. She was too suspicious of him, too all in your face, too annoying. He hated she was Ayanna's friend. He decided he was going to fix that. Ayanna doesn't need naysayers in her ear about him anyways.
Oh, speaking of Ayanna, Caesar didn't know she had it in her to have such an attitude…but Virgos are said to know how to hide certain parts of themselves very well. She will have to cooperate with him, but if she doesn't, he'll make it happen. He reached the destination and sat on the bench.
"Hey sexy." Stacey looked at him and rolled her eyes.
"What did you call me out here?"
"I want to talk…and smoke a L with you, why you actin' all stank for?" he said smoothly.
"I thought life was a chess board and I'm not player, some pseudo smart shit you said." She scooted from him. He eyed what she was wearing. Her attitude screamed she didn't want to talk, but her short blue skirt and tight fitting halter top that showed off her flat stomach was saying she wanted the D.
"Aw I was bein' mean. I was seeing if you were serious…play your moves right…you can be on the team." Caesar stroked her thigh. She sucked her teeth.
"Naw you fuckin' with that Ayanna bitch. She grabbing folks by the hair and shit." She folded her arms in a huff. It was very embarrassing to go back to Daphne's house empty handed and half her body covered in dirt and gravel from where she landed as well as her hair being out of place.
"She won't touch you again. I promise." She looked at him when he pulled the blunt out his pocket. She bit her lip, trying not to give in to temptation.
"Don't front. You want this." He lit the blunt and blew her a shotgun. She snatched it from him and took her own puff.
"So what of that bitch? You talking to her or what?" she asked. Caesar responded by sliding his hands up her skirt, touching her spot. She moaned automatically.
"Like that shit would stop you." He smirked. She took another hit as he continued to stroke her.
"Ughhnn…damn stop before something happens in this park." She sighed.
"That's what I want." He said huskily. She threw the blunt away and jumped on top of him. They were grinding against each other as they kissed wildly in the dark of the night. He pulled out his condom and showed it to her.
"Fuck me under these streetlights…it makes this shit romantic." He smiled. She returned the smile and went in for another kiss. Ayanna wasn't acting right and was too goody goody, he needed some and been feigning for quite a while. He might as well get it from a bitch that's willing.
...
Huey was under the covers texting Jazmine late into the wee hours. Riley was fast asleep snoring and occasionally muttering something about Sophia. Huey recorded that mess because he knows he'll deny it when he wakes up. Jazmine was telling him about her favorite Disney movies. Huey shook his head at the subjects they had all night. He told her his favorite martial art movies as well as kid movies. He made her swear that she'll never tell anyone that he quite fancied Aladdin after Lion King. Even after she tried to tell him it was okay for him to like that movie, he forbade it being known. He even told her stories of his childhood in Chicago before he met her.
'I can't believe you had looking all over Chicago looking for you. Lol' she texted. He of course left out his parent's death, which would have to be told in person.
'I didn't want to leave.'
'Lol, obviously not. –yawn- I'm sleepy now. I'll see you tomorrow, nighty Huey!'
'Night Jaz.' And he sat up from under the covers. It felt good to tell her things she's never known about him before. It felt good to have someone close to him besides Riley to know him period. His eyes grew heavy as he went to sleep himself, his mind wandering to his mulatto girl.
...
Riley scowled that Friday morning.
"You're such a pedophile. Watching me sleep? Gay nigga." He remembered the dream he had about Sophia the other night and he didn't appreciate the fact it was recorded for Huey's amusement. Huey shrugged.
"Not my fault you were talking loud. Can Sophia see this?" Riley tried to snatch the phone from him.
"I swear on Uncle Rucku's fucked up eye that if she sees that I will kill you in your sleep."
"While granddad is gone, I'll be sleeping in the guest room." Huey said smugly. Riley grumbled, not feeling like arguing. He knew Huey is teasing and would never do that anyway. Granddad yelled for the boys to come downstairs. When they walked out the room they saw Uncle Ruckus standing at the door besides Robert.
"Good Morning, you apes!" he waved at them, ignoring the scowls the brothers were giving him from the top of the stairs.
"I'm gone ya'll, have a good day at school. The money I left for ya'll is in my room. Make it stretch, don't let Riley buy clothes with that money Huey." Huey glared over at Riley, reminded of the time when he first left and that nigga bought clothes when they had no food. Riley rolled his eyes.
"I was eight years old, cancel that stare nigga." Riley snapped. Robert nodded and left the house. Ruckus placed his hands on his waist.
"Now I know ya'll niggas ain't learning shit, but gon' take ya asses to school. I'll be here when you get back. And this time it will take more than bb guns to get my ass out the house." He smiled at them. Huey and Riley smirked. The challenge was accepted. They'll see his Popeye ass leave the house before the night was over. Watch.
...
Cindy was catching a ride to school with Gambino. They became super tight over time and he had to admit lil white girl could move a brick or two. He didn't mind by doing things for a good worker and the fact that she was on the cute side was a plus.
"Yo Gambino, how about you get Riley in on the action when he turn 16 next year?" she asked. He sighed. He didn't want no children on his team. He didn't care Riley was a friend of Cindy's, that nigga too young.
"Cindy, I already said naw man. Chill with constantly askin' a nigga that. Riley's loud mouth ass can't run shit until he grows up mental wise and not just age wise." Cindy folded her arms, he knew she as about to become difficult now.
"He my nigga and I promised him I'd get him in. Shit he coo' with Ed, who I don't think gives any kinds of fuck as long as he gets his money so what's yo beef nigga?" she asked.
"I ain't got no beef, it's just business Cin, we on our way to being millionaires and I don't want to see an empire I worked so hard on to be destroyed, damn girl he'll be alright. What? You scared of being in this world without him at yo' heels all the fuckin' time?"
Cindy frowned. Riley been there for her since she was ten, she ain't about to grow up without him. Its bad enough she senses they've been growing apart because she's been out the picture for so long. Always partying with them, always running the streets with Gambino, it's a wonder Riley ain't drop her ass.
"Naw nigga, I c-" Gambino leaned over and kissed her once he was parked in the school's parking lot. Shocked Cindy stared at him when he pulled back.
"Go to class girl. Riley ain't hurtin' over this. Trust me." He got out his car and left the shell shocked blonde in the passenger seat. She got out and watched Gambino walk to class. She whipped her head to see her cousin walking with Ming and rushed over to her, she snatched Sophia away from Ming, earning a faint 'hey!' from the girl. Sophia looked at Cindy with a pissed facial expression.
"What?" she barked.
"Did you see anything?" she shook her cousin.
"Girl I was talking to my friend, no one was paying attention to you!" Sophia tried to walk away but Cindy yanked her back.
"You lyin' to me?"
"No! Shit, what you do? Kill a teacher? Let go of my arm!" she yanked her arm out her paranoid cousin's hold. Cindy didn't know why she was scared if Sophia saw that kiss, it wasn't like she initiated it. It threw her in a loop that was the first time a boy ever kissed her. Cindy didn't know what to feel at that moment. She looked at Sophia walking back towards Ming, who was eyeing her weirdly. Fuck, she thought. She pushed her braid back over her shoulder and marched to class. She was honestly at a loss of what to do about this.
...
Ayanna was at her locker when Caesar approached her.
"So are you gonna talk to me now since you ignore my calls and texts?" he asked her. Ayanna looked at him, rolled her eyes, and closed her locker. He followed her down the hall.
"I'm sorry babe; I was wrong for getting mad at you for dumb shit. I don't know why I did that my damn self. It was selfish." He grabbed her arm lightly, making her stop walking.
"That was the second time you did that to me Caesar. I don't have to put up with it." She sighed.
"Let me make it up to you." He said quickly. Ayanna pursed her lips.
"How will you do that?"
"Treat you better of course…appreciating your wishes and accepting them. I'm sorry Ayanna. I'll be more considerate."
Ayanna shifted in her shoes. She liked him so much…so she decided to forgive him once more.
"Fine okay, I'll forgive you. One more time though and I will not be interested." She said sternly. He smiled and kissed her.
"There won't be another time, I promise." He ran his hands through her hair. She smiled and hugged him tightly.
"Yay! So how have you been?" she blushed as he laced her hand with his.
"Good, I've been missing you like crazy and beating myself up for being such an ass but enough about me, you?" Ayanna laughed. There he goes with his crazy self. His off putting persona always drew her to him in a weird sense. She could never describe how he could make her feel. Boys back in France would say they liked her but never really dated her, so this experience was new and thrilling for her.
"I've missed you too." She pressed her cheek up against his. "I've been good as well." Their moment was interrupted when Stacey roughly bumped into Ayanna's side as she walked past. Ayanna looked at her, about to say something, but Caesar pulled her away.
"Ignore her, lets go." He shook his head. She didn't like the smile Stacey had on her face…she's never smiled at her like that before. Something was behind that smile...what they call those types of smile that makes you feel like you're the butt of an unknown joke?
An 'all knowing' smile. Maybe Ayanna was reading too much into it, so she shrugged it off. Stacey wouldn't try to fight her again would she? Either way, Ayanna wasn't going to let anyone bully her.
...
It was the period before lunch and Huey did a light jog to his locker. He hated his locker was so far from his next time and his laziness to have gotten the book he needed earlier since he knew this would happen. He was putting his previous class folder in his locker, not noticing Franci walk up on him.
"Huey! I tried calling you all weekend. What happened?"
"I didn't want to talk to you." Huey didn't know how to handle these things…so of course he did it all wrong.
"What do you mean? I thought we were making progress..." Franci said puzzled.
"Sucking me off ain't progress. It was a fun ride but uh…I don't want you. I'm with someone else." Huey's oblivious bluntness knew no end. He didn't think any of that would hurt her for some reason. Franci just stared at him in the hallway with the blankest facial expression.
"What…?" she asked in a low voice.
"I decided I don't want a relationship with you. I chose someone else. You were only a distraction from the truth I've been running from for years. Sorry about that." He did a slight shrug and walked passed her. He thought that if he kept being honest, things would remain simple.
He knew not of the shit storm he just made.
...
Riley sat beside Sofia in class.
"Hey!" he said. Sofia turned to him and threw up the peace sign. She went through her bag and pulled out the planet reports.
"Nice paint job on these planets!" she cried as she was looking at the model from all angles. He was really talented with this art stuff. How ironic such a destructive little tyke such as himself could create such beauty. Sophia thought that was uncanny. Riley smiled with pride. He liked when anyone noticed his talent in art and he could honestly talk about it all day.
"Do you do any other mediums?" She asked. Riley looked at her funny.
"What?" She playfully rolled her eyes playfully.
"Do you do other things besides paint?"
"Oh! Why the hell you ain't just say that? Damn, quit talking fancy!" Riley sneered. This girl will forever talk weird, but to be fair she toned that shit down A LOT over the years, Riley thinks that's her way of insulting them, thinking they're so dumb that she had to simplify the way she talked. When she didn't answer to his rant he sucked his teeth.
"Anyway, yeah I do other shit. I like to spray paint, use color pencils and granite. I should show the work I did when I was still living in Chicago."
"How are you at water colors?"
"I never used those."
"You should give it a shot." She smiled. Riley felt that weird feeling in his chest again when she smiled at him. Damn why she gotta be all genuinely interested in his shit for? Yeah Cindy knew and even gave him props for some of his pictures but it felt different when she did it. Then it hit him…did he even like Cindy past a friend? He looked at his desk, thinking hard about it. Sophia arched her eyebrow as she watched Riley go into sudden think mode. Maybe if he asked how Cindy felt about him…that should make his choice easier. Cindy being older than him never bothered him, though it did lessen the times he would see her in school. Cindy, Caesar, Huey, Jazmine, Ming and Ayanna would ALL graduate before him and Sophia so she would be all he had once he was a junior. Riley didn't like talking about with anyone but since his parents' death, he feared change and the future.
So far he didn't like how his feelings for Sophia changed; he didn't like how he couldn't have feelings for anyone else right now because he didn't want to think about anyone else. He didn't like how adulthood was creeping up on him the more he realized it. Riley Escobar Freeman as an adult? heh, what a picture. But he learned that time changes people for the better…or worse. He looked over at Sophia.
"Hey…Sophia, you want to know something?" Sophia looked back over to him.
"What?"
"You and I gon' change soon." He looked back at his paper.
'…the hell?' Sophia's mouth was open and was turned up in the corner in utter confusion. 'the fuck does that mean?' she asked herself. She closed her mouth and raised a finger to ask what he meant but they were called to turn their projects in.
...
Daphne paced back in forth in the bathroom. Franci sent her an angry text filled with curses and typos galore and told her to meet her in the bathroom in the beginning of lunch. Franci stormed in and locked the main door the bathroom behind her and dragged her sister to the back of the bathroom where no one could hear her.
"I HATE THAT BITCH!"
"Who? Who's giving you trouble?" Daphne asked frowning.
"FUCK THAT NIGGA!" she kicked the door of the stall so hard and loud, Daphne had to stop her and pinned her irate sister against the wall.
"Who are you talking about?" she asked slowly. Franci felt so fucking stupid and used! And what's worse, that mothafucka walked off like there are NO repercussions for this! How could he live with himself to admit such shit? Who did that fuck nigga think he is?! Fuck him all the way to hell. He gon' pay, oh hell yes, he is going to pay. And she won't just deal with Huey, Franci will fuck with EVERYONE he knows. Fuck the bullshit, everyone will feel the heat goddamnit.
"Woodcrest High will never see another bitch as mad as me. I swear until the day I graduate out this bitch, these niggas and these hoes will KNOW not to EVER cross Francis Jacqueline Du'Bois! I will go down in history in the year books when I graduate. I'mma raise HELL up in this ho!" she yelled, still leaving her little sister in the dark.
"Can you please tell me what the fuck you are talking about?" Daphne was now annoyed she was missing lunch for this shit. Franci had to make herself calm down and told her sister everything.
...
It was after school and Riley was looking for Cindy. He was about to turn the corner but jumped back when he found her at her locker with Gambino.
"What was that kiss all about?" He heard Cindy ask. Kiss? That nigga kissed her.
"I gotta be real Cindy…a nigga be feelin' you and shit. We've been having some good times and you cool to chill with." Riley was up against the wall, listening. He blinked and stood in silence. Why…why didn't he see this coming?
"Gambino I…I don't know what to say." Riley didn't recognize that voice. Cindy was talking like an actual female…all low and feminine and shit. She never talked to him with that voice.
"You ain't gotta say shit." And when he didn't hear anything else, he peered back to see Cindy kissing him. He squeezed his eyes shut and walked back from where he came he was told by Huey to wait on him in the parking lot but he went straight home.
...
"So uh…my granddad is out of town." Huey told Jazmine as they waited for Riley.
"Oh? How long is he gone?" she asked innocently.
"A week…so…uh…how about you come over?" He stepped closer to her. Jazmine smiled as she stepped back.
"I remember when I was younger I tried to invite you over to my house, you said no every time…so it seems I may have to decline now." She giggled.
"But I think you'll like the games I wanna play." He gripped her chin and kissed her.
"Eww, niggas get a room!" Caesar called behind them. Jazmine blushed and looked at the ground as Huey faced his friend.
"Hey Cease, what's up?"
"Nothing nigga, so I guess I won't be chillin' with you tonight?"
"Come on over man plans ain't changed." He looked around, where was Riley? He called him.
"What?" Riley's voice was monotone.
"Where are you? I'm waiting."
"I'm walking home by myself. You ain't gotta wait. I'll see you when you home." He hung up, making Huey stare at his phone.
"What is it?" Jazmine asked.
"Riley. Something's wrong with him. He never just up and walks home without me." Huey said in concern. He did a mental note to talk to him later. Jazmine smiled, Huey never likes to think about how close they are but he just admitted they don't even walk home without each other. Cindy ran up to the group.
"Sorry guys, I got held up, so whats on our agenda?"
Huey never ever thought he'd be doing this but after they kicked Ruckus out…everyone would be invited over.
"Saturday night…we're having a small get together at my house." Cindy and Jazmine looked at each other.
"Are you the real Huey?" Cindy waved her hand in his face. "This sound like some shit Reezy would do." She laughed but stopped abruptly. That nigga missing in action, where is he? She didn't think on too much before catching her cousin and her friends.
"Aye ya'll! Come over here!" she yelled. The three girls walked over to the group.
"Look, ya'll coo' with my cousin and shit and Caesar is talking to Ayanna so I say we stop with all the mutual friend shit and start talking. Do you guys wanna come over Huey's house Saturday night?" Jazmine squealed and grabbed Ayanna's hand. This was a perfect way to get to know her better.
"Please say yes!" Jazmine looked pleading to Ayanna and Ming, who have up until know reserved their presence for Sophia.
"You down cuz?" Cindy shoved her.
Sophia looked at the group. She didn't want to be labeled a Debbie Downer.
"Fine, I don't care." She shrugged. Huey nodded. Jazmine jumped up and down, still holding Ayanna's hand. Tomorrow night was gonna be fun!
...
Uncle Ruckus laughed as he stuffed popcorn in his face. He was watching niggas embarrassing themselves on BET.
"Ya'll ugly apes and ya'll weaves! Front lace weave is the work of the devil, giving ya'll fucked up hairlines and ya'll think that shit cute!" he laughed as he talked to himself. He didn't noticed Riley and Huey quietly stalk up on him. Riley wouldn't say what was bothering him earlier but was cool with the plans for Saturday. Huey stood behind the chair as Riley stood in front of the TV.
"Aye you nigglet, get out the way!" he shouted before Huey covered his head with a pillow case.
"NIGGAS TRYIN' TO KILL ME! HELP ME WHITE JESUS!" He cried in a panic, knocking the bowel of popcorn off the arm of the chair. Huey put him in a sleeper hold until he collapsed in the pillow case.
"Toss his ass out!" Riley barked. And Huey did just that, but not before taking the spare key to the house out his pocket. Riley smirked as Huey slammed the door behind him.
Well...R&R. What's gon' happen Saturday?
Riley: Some shit between me and -
Hush Riley damn! lol bye. Until next time!
