My legs take of. Towards the cornucopia not even stopping as I pick up the small pack and then a knife five feet from that.
I can hear footsteps behind me and turn around just in time to block a fist aimed at my head and bring my other arm around. The knife connects with his neck and I know it's over.
I turn back around and continue running towards the spear. Some of the careers are already there fighting off other children. There are bodies every where. I look towards the spear and see another boy just about to grab it. Without even thinking I throw my only weapon. It embeds itself in his back and he hits his knees and collapses onto the ground, face first. My legs move faster now than I think they have ever moved. I know that spear is my best chance at survival. And right as I grab it the boy from district 1 is running at me with a sword in his hand ready to kill me. This could be it. I could be dead within the first 10 minutes of the games. I quickly pull the knife out of the other tributes back and throw it as fast as I can towards Declan. Thankfully he doesn't have very fast reflexes and the knife hits him in the chest right below his left shoulder. That stops him in his tracks. Though he isn't dead I turn around and grab the spear also picking up a few more knives from just inside the month and another larger pack and take off towards the trees. I run as fast as I can without looking back and run for as long as I can. Which is quite a while thanks to all the swimming I do.
Finally I feel that I have put enough distance between me and the cornucopia. I don't think anyone would have been able to follow me that far. I sit under a tree to rest and sort through my bags. All my supplies are laid out in front of me. Three knives that I grabbed and the spear are the weapons I have. From the small pack I have a bag of dried fruit and some iodide sticks for purifying water, not much, and in the larger pack there is a sleeping bag, an empty water bottle, some dried meats, a pair of sunglasses, and a small amount of rope.
Just as I finish going through my supplies I hear the cannons signalling the bloodbath is over. One, two, three,... Nine, ten, eleven. Eleven gone. Eleven children that never got to grow up. Eleven families that are one member short. Eleven lives lost. And I ended two of them. Maybe even three. I hate to think about so I push the thought out of my head.
I put on the sunglasses to help shade from the sun but quickly take them off as they seem to shatter everything around me. I hold them in my hands and turn them over and over until I realize that they must be the night vision glasses. Some of the fishermen use them when they go out at night.
I pack up everything into the larger pack and bury the smaller one, then put the knives in my belt for easy access and pic up my spear. I'll need to find water first. Without it I could die of dehydration within days. The only thought that bothers me is that the small pool of water might be the only source and if it is then I'd have to climb back up this slope and... Slope! Water runs down. There must be something around here at the bottom of the hill.
Walking down the hill starts off easy but the incline continues to get steeper and steeper making it more difficult to walk until it flattens out only to. Turn into a cliff. I walk towards the edge to see if there is any sign of water but the drop must be at least 200 feet.
I decide to walk along in hopes of finding some sort of water source.
After about an hour or two of walking I come across a small creek. Just in time, I was starting to feel a little dizzy. The humidity in this forest is way worse than in district four which is saying a lot because we live right by the ocean which usually means high humidity. But in here it feels like I've just stepped out of the ocean but never dried off.
I fill up my water bottle and put a purifying stick inside and wait 30 minutes. So I take of my shoes and socks and submerge them in the cold water sending shivers up my spine but it feels so nice against this hot weather.
I just sit there thinking about home and the ocean and my mom and wishing she is ok. If I do die I really hope she can continue living. Maybe she will be able to find a new man to make her happy and give her another child. Although I'm not sure if she would be able to handle it since it would still be in the reaping. My mother is so fragile yet so strong. She has raised me alone for most of my life and I think she has done a very good job. I think she could do it again. Who knows maybe by the time the child turned 12 the games would be terminated, maybe there will be a rebellion that ends the games and she would be able to live in peace. Those are thoughts that I would never be able to say out loud. Talking against the Capitol is a crime punishable by death.
Then I realize that I still have dry blood on my hands from the two boys that I killed. I quickly scrub them as hard as I can to get it off and though I get it off physically I will always have it on my conscience.
When the 30 minutes are up I chug as much water as I can and then fill it up again using another purifying stick to purify it.
I'll need to make a plan to win. I'll have to kill more and in order to do that I'll have to move back up the hill to where more tributes will be.
But I can do that tomorrow.
For now I'll find a place to make camp for the night that is near this creek so I can get more water in the morning before I move.
I snack on a piece of dried meat to settle my stomach as I search for camp. I settle on a patch of bushes that will provide good cover from any tributes that may wander by but I can also see them if they do.
I lay out my sleeping bag and crawl in eating another piece of meat, but my stomach keeps wanting more. Maybe tomorrow I can follow the creek to see if it get any wider, then it might have fish. It will also be good because any tributes who found it will likely stick near it knowing they need a water source.
The sun starts to set so I put on my glasses to help me see in the dark and wait for the anthem and the pictures of the fallen tributes.
As the moon comes out the seal of Panem shines bright across the sky. I have to take the glasses off because of the light. The anthem echoes across the entire arena making sure that every tribute will hear it.
Then the faces of those killed today flash across the night sky. The girl from 3, the girl from 5, the boy from 6, both from 7 and 8, the boy from 9 and both from 10 and the boy from 12. She made it.
I guess that knife didn't kill Declan. The seal of Panem again and then darkness only illuminated slightly by the moon.
I put my glasses back on and drift off to sleep.
