Chapter 10: found
For once in the past four months Tsuki was lying in her bed in the middle of the night wide awake. How could she go to sleep with all the memories coming back to her? Nearly everyone in that room earlier that day she knew. And she was pretty sure most of them wouldn't want a reunion. She stayed at their homes, let them teach her their secrets, and how did she repay them? She stole their belongings for herself and fled from their lives forever, or at least she thought it would be forever.
She shouldn't be thinking of this now. She had a tournament to win. Then she could go to New York. The Big Apple. Home. At least she wouldn't have to worry about meeting her parents. There were millions of people in New York City, how could she run into them? It's not like they would be able to recognize her, their daughter. How did she start thinking about them? They're nothing to her. They're just as good as the dirt she walks on everyday.
Now Tsuki tried to go to sleep but the darkness of the room captivated her to stay awake. The light of the moon was shining through the window on to her bedspread. She looked down at Kito lying on his back and his hind legs twitching. She smiled at his position. Now she figured she wouldn't get to sleep at all that night. She got out of the bed and walked across the room to disappear into the hotel hallways.
boys room
All the lights were on and the four guys were sitting in the living room portion of their hotel room and talking.
"Okay, what are we gonna do if we don't win this tournament?" Yusuke asked the rest.
"That won't be a problem because we will win the tournament, for T's sake." Kuwabara answered.
"And when we go to New York, what happens then? We were never told to win that one."
"That must mean someone in New York wants T. In the letter, it said we could give her to him." Yusuke said sort of fidgeting.
"Hey, isn't T from New York City?" Kuwabara asked the group.
"Yes, that is where the old woman found her, and then brought her to Tokyo." Hiei said. He wasn't making contact with anyone.
"Well then the real fight is in New York." Kurama said.
"We need to make it past this tournament and find out how to save her." Everyone agreed by nodding. Hiei still was staring into nothing.
"We really should get sleep for tomorrow. We could be the first to go." Kurama stood up and walked to his room along with Yusuke and Kuwabara. Hiei stayed behind to think.
outside the door
Tsuki stood dumbfounded at what she had heard. At first she didn't believe it, but as she started piecing everything together, it slowly made sense. But could it all really be true? Could the guys be fighting for there lives because of her and the problems she had? She didn't want this to be the truth, but the fact that she was from New York and the guys said the real issue would be there she finally believed all this to be true.
Tsuki slowly turned around into the darkness of the hallway with her big navy eyes still wide. Then she fell unconscious.
back in the room
Hiei was just about to stand up to go to bed when a piece of paper was pushed under the door into the room. Quickly, he walked over and picked it up to read.
You should really learn to be quiet about this issue. We can't let the girl know or havoc will come to all. If you are to speak of the other letter again, be sure the girl is not in earshot like she was a few minutes ago.
Hiei's big red eyes went bigger as he threw the door open. There was no one there. He continued reading.
But don't worry. I took care of her. I sure hope your friends fight against Kuro and the others is a good one. They are quite strong you know. Well now, I am glad we have this problem understood. Be sure to inform your other friends Hiei. Good luck.
Hiei was now even more surprised. His head didn't move but his eyes followed the long shadows down the hall. He looked back at the letter and went to open Tsuki's room door. He stood there with his hand on the doorknob watching Tsuki sleep peacefully. He stayed for a couple of minutes till he closed the door and went to go sleep.
next day
Everyone was standing in the same room as yesterday for the drawings of the fights. Hiei had been watching Tsuki the whole morning thinking of last night and the letters. She seemed to not have remembered anything, if she in fact heard anything in the first place.
"What is it Hiei? Don't worry, you've been training my butt for the past four months and I think you can believe that I can hold my own for now so stop looking at me!" Tsuki yelled out. She was wearing a jean jacket, a black tank top and fighting pants with the bottoms cut off at mid calf and all stars on her feet. (Botan had taken her shopping for her first time a while back... not really important but hey)
"Do you really think you can hold your own looking like that?" He asked her trying not to make the situation seem awkward.
"Hey, this is what normal teenage human girls wear okay?"
"Since when were you a normal human?"
"Since birth fire boy, I'm just better than others."
"And why is that?"
"Because I am cool."
"So cool is sleeping in the fetal position with your thumb in your mouth?"
Tsuki stopped quickly and went wide eyed as everyone else smiled.
"I was nine!" She defended.
"Nine? Isn't that still a little old?" Kuwabara asked.
"This doesn't concern you." Tsuki said to Kuwa's face, then turning it just as quickly back to Hiei's. Then, the announcements began.
"Greetings fighters of Japan. We are quite pleased to see all of you show up to participate. In a moment, the orders of the fights will be made. Please stay seated at your assigned tables until the drawings are made." The person standing on the podium at the front of the room stepped down and started speaking to another man and a woman in business suites.
Abruptly, Tsuki searched the room for their table. When she found it, she saw that there were name tags at each seat though ignored them and sat down in Botan's seat.
"Um T, I believe that is my seat." Botan said only getting a blank stare from her. She understood and took the seat next to her which was Tsuki's labeled seat. (Why didn't Tsuki just take her own seat? It was right there!)
"Okay, the drawings have been made. Time to see the ranks." The same man as before said standing next to a projector with 16 different slots all interconnected to each other that were shining on the opposite wall.
'Let's see if that letter was telling the truth.' Hiei sat cross armed in the one guest seat that was set up for the group waiting for the pairings. Staring quizzically, he saw that the man was writing numbers on the translucent sheet. Then, he noticed the numbers on the table corresponded to the numbers the man was writing. Their number was 6. It had yet to come up.
"Ooh, I can't wait to see who we go against first." Yusuke said waiting for the number 6 to come up.
"Ten bucks says it's whoever's 10." Tsuki said.
"How bout it Hiei? Hiei? Yoo hoo! Hiiieeeiii!" Tsuki was waving her arms in front of his face frantically not noticing she was attracting attention. Everyone looked at her oddly for a second and Hiei only took notice when the man at the podium stopped writing the numbers and stared at Tsuki in an odd, menacing way, as if wanting her. His eyes went slightly wider at this just as the man switched his motion and looked into Hiei's eyes and slightly smirked. Hiei locked his eyes on the man as he looked back down at the projector to continue the numbers with the same smirk on his face. As he finished the numbers, he wrote one last thing before stepping off the podium for everyone to see.
"Damn, it wasn't 10, oh well! No one bet me!" Tsuki sat back and searched around the room for the table with the number 15 on it.
"Hey, do you guys see the number 15 anywhere? I can't see it." Kurama stood up looking around just as everyone else at the table did, except Hiei. He was staring at the last words the man had written on the projector paper.
Good luck
'Good luck.'
That writing, it... it was the same as on the other letter. The one that had to have been written only a few minutes after the guys' talked about Tsuki just last night.
He was there. Last night.
He was the man who wanted Tsuki. The man on the podium. Hiei could end it all so soon by just killing him, but he was human, Hiei could tell. And killing a human was a major felony. Besides, if he did that even legally, how could he explain it to her? He decided right there to leave it be. But be sure that Tsuki stayed away from him. Hiei's thoughts of safety were suddenly cut short.
'Hey Hiei! Look who we're fighting first!" Tsuki yelled from across the room. He looked over and saw her standing next to Kuro.
'Just like he said.' Hiei thought as he walked over to talk with the group again.
Across the room
"That's her," the man from the podium said, "that's definitely her."
