Kid Flash sat on his bed with a game controller in hand, and his gaze fixed upon the screen only a few feet away. His hands twitched with the desire to mash any and all of the buttons on the game pad, but he forced himself to stay calm so he could carefully guide his character over the wooden pallets floating on murky water.
His mind buzzed anxiously, knowing that any second now the creature below would come out of hiding for a full on assault. He pressed himself to concentrate on all the little details of the dark caves he was desperately trying to escape from. Any sign of movement could be the key to his survival. Missing it could mean almost certain death.
'There!' his mind shouted after seeing the ghost of a ripple. His guard was up and he prepared for the rush from his scaly, green enemy.
SCHWUT!
The high pitched release from his door resulted in a full body twitch from the speedster, but he didn't allow his concentration to waver.
"Hey Wall," Robin greeted his best friend.
"Shh!"
Robin rose an eyebrow. "Dude, did you just 'shh' me?" His gaze traveled from his friend's back to the TV. "What the-KF, are you playing Arkham Asylum?"
"No," Kid lied.
"Then why is your guy dressed up like Batman?"
"Uh...He's not?"
Rob crossed his arms. "Sure he isn't."
"Dude! Can't you just let me finish this boss?"
"Who're you fighting? Or maybe I should ask, who are you trying to avoid even though you can't really avoid them since it's part of the game?"
"Killer Croc. Now be quiet. I'm trying to concentrate."
"You know, the real Batman would have already planned out a way to take him down so he didn't have to worry about being surprised, right?"
Kid rolled his eyes. "Yeah, sure. Take out the threat before it becomes a nuisance. Blah blah blah."
"And you're also aware that sewers don't actually have conveniently placed wooden planks to keep you from getting covered in nastiness, yes?"
"Yes! Alright? I get it. Not a very realistic game. Are you done?"
Robin pondered for a moment before nodding. Then he remembered Wally didn't have eyes in the back of his head so he said, "Yeah. I guess I'm good."
Wally went back to watching the screen. Apparently the ripple he thought he saw, wasn't actually a tip. Twas merely a distraction to put him on edge.
He tiptoed across the pallets. He was so close to reaching his destination. And of course that's when it happened. A massive, green monster clambered onto on of the planks behind him. The furious roars came closer and closer, and running was doing nothing to deter the creature from chasing its prey. As a final effort to stop Killer Croc, Kid went in for the 'kill', but it was too late. Croc dove the three meter distance between them and dragged the body into the scum infested water.
"Nooooo!" Kid wailed before tossing the controller on the floor. GAME OVER was paused on the middle of the screen, mocking his recent failure.
He was given a moment of silence before Robin spoke with mock seriousness. "Dude...you killed Batman."
