a/n: and just when you thought it would take another millennium for another update...

"It was one night, Kitty." Rogue said, rolling up another set of clean, white bandages. "You've gotta get over this."

Before, Kitty would have been calling Rogue the shut-in. But in the last six months, things changed. Not a lot of point going out when your heart is always in the same place. Or really, with the same person. So when Rogue wanted to go to the dance halls and take over the town, she felt a little out of place. And there was Betsy, but that just seemed so different. She and Warren had been together for a long time, and their dynamic just seemed... different.

"Anna Marie," Kitty rolled her eyes, packaging the bandages in a tidy box. Rogue winced at the mention of her full name. "I'm fine." She put a smile on, and, for the most part, it was pretty real. Because the thought of him made her beam. She was sad, but in a sort of hopeful way, like when the sun sets.

He said he'd find her, and she believed him.

Until then, she was volunteering as a nurse. Just trying to do her part.

"You're askin' to get yourself hurt." Rogue folded her arms over her chest, putting a halt to all voluntary labor. "You don't even know if he's coming home."

Kitty pursed her red lips. She found it strange, how she thought that was possible and impossible at the same time.

"I'm just worried about you."

"Alright," Kitty nodded. "Alright." She loved Rogue infinitely more than any other friend she'd ever known. And she loved her because even now, she was just looking out for her.

She would appease Rogue. But, the truth was, she couldn't stop. Recreating the cobalt of his eyes, imagining the rich navy color of his voice, thinking of all the things she didn't get to learn about him- the names of his parents, what kind of weather he liked, his favorite game to play. She wanted it all. She could see it.

She wouldn't give up on this.

"Don't tell me you been thinking about that girl again."

Remy shouted above the blaze of enemy fire. A series slices marred his uniform where he narrowly dodged several bullets.

"You need to get your head in the game, Pete." He shook his head. "This girl- man, she ain't waiting for you."

But that wasn't true. It just wasn't. He could feel it, like he felt every pound in his chest. A smile crawled across his lips.

"Could it be," he said, glancing up out of their bunker to sink back down. "That you are just bitter the friend didn't call you back?"

Remy grinned his devil grin.

"I'm series mon ami- you're gonna get us killed!"

Pete would admit, he was right. He did need to focus, if he intended to find her again.

The second he had downtime, right after they left port, he sketched out the last look of her face. Not from the car- but the sad look she had looking down at the street, when he told her he was leaving. He wanted to remember that. He drew her likeness several times since then, but that was the one he kept folded in his chest pocket. Because that was when he knew- he could see clearly now, here, even if he didn't that moment- that he loved her.

Not as a nostalgic remembrance or a near death need to see life with more vibrancy. But really. He connected to her, in a way he couldn't explain. And he knew, it was only one night. He didn't know her, not really. But, if he got out of here, he would spend the rest of his life trying to find out.

He meant what he said. He would find her.

"You never told me," Remy said, bracing himself to run back out into the fray. "What magical events transpired that evening."

"Get us through this alive," Pete said. "And I'll tell you everything you want to know."

Again, Remy grinned. He thrived on this kind of stuff. And they were quite a team. If Warren hadn't been transferred to the air force, they'd all be raising a ruckus the Nazi's would never believe.

"I've wagered for less." He shrugged.

So the two were back in action, rushing out in open territory.

He'd find her. And when he found her, he would find a way to keep her.
