Chapter 10: The Ministry of Magic

The five stood, slightly confused, until a golden lightbulb appeared above Sandy's head, capturing the attention of the others. The lightbulb was replaced by an image of Jamie, then a house. For a moment nobody moved, then it was a mad dash to Jamie's house.

Jack's eyes widened in horror as he saw the outside of the house. It was covered in a thick layer of black sand, and the tree in the front yard was also covered, judging by the shadows clinging to its branches. Sandy, who was leading the group, opened the front gate like a civilized person – or spirit – as opposed to Bunny, who probably would have just kicked the gate down and walked over it. Sandy's small steps over the black sand-covered lawn turned the area where he stepped to gold sand, but the black sand was so strong that the gold spread no further. The black sand covered the door, leaving no space to wrench it open or to turn the doorknob. Sandy formed a huge ball of dreamsand and threw it at the door. Golden sand spread from the point of impact and the door was revealed behind the sheet of sand.

"That was too easy," Bunny said uneasily, and Jack agreed.

The night was silent, with the full moon shining brightly. The five approached the door and Sandy opened it. Compared with outside, the inside of the house was absolute chaos.

The floor looked like an ocean of black sand, with waves of it crashing on the ground, causing the sand to ripple over the floor. The five Guardians stepped over the threshold. Jack ran forwards, the nightmare sand freezing under his feet. Suddenly a bright light from someone's wand shot toward Jack, but he backflipped over the jet of light and moved to where the caster stood. He unleashed a jet of ice at his attacker, who jumped out of the way and attempted to Stupefy Jack.

"Are you a…" Jack muttered. The person smiled evilly under the mask and confirmed Jack's suspicions. "Yep, you are." Jack answered his own question.

"Death Eater. Bellatrix Lestrange, at your service," she said, and bowed mockingly, taking her mask off as she did. Jack's eyes narrowed. He remembered that this was the woman who had tortured Neville's parents into insanity. He had the extreme displeasure of having to witness that event. He snapped back to reality as a killing curse shot past his ear.

As Jack battled Bellatrix, six more Death Eaters emerged from the shadows and began to converge on Jack, giving Bellatrix a little (or a lot) of extra support. The other Guardians sprang into action. Sandy unleashed his sand whips and yanked two of the Death Eaters away from Jack while North slashed between Fenrir Greyback's shoulder blades with his scimitars, while Tooth unsheathed double-edged swords and swung them skillfully at Yaxley. Bunny kicked the other two in the heads, then drew his boomerangs. Soon everyone was engaged in a fight, all except for one shadow gliding leisurely across the floor and heading up the stairs. The shadow took shape and Pitch stared gleefully down at the fray. He then turned and walked along the hall to Jamie's room. Jack saw this and, with a great burst of ice, froze Bellatrix in a block of ice and sprinted up the stairs three steps at a time. He shot along the hall and practically screeched to a halt when he realized that once again, Pitch seemed to have vanished into thin air. Thinking quickly, Jack threw open the door to Jamie's room in time to see Jamie backed up against the wall as Pitch walked towards him.

"NO!" Jack yelled as he darted in front of Jamie and shot a bolt of ice at Pitch. Pitch shrank back slightly in surprise, then vanished. A few seconds later, Jamie did too. Taking a wild guess about where Pitch was headed, Jack jumped out the window and landed on the ground lightly. He spotted Pitch gliding across the ground, with Jamie in a cage of sand. Jamie just sat and glared at Pitch.

"Nice hair," Jack heard Jamie say. He smirked. "He learns quickly," Jack thought. His eyes widened as Pitch raised his hand. Jack leaped forward and Pitch rushed away at an inhuman speed as he saw Jack, who quickly pursued him.

"Are you really that low, Pitch? Kidnapping children?" Jack taunted as he flew through the trees, hiding his fear for Jamie.

"Low?" Pitch laughed. "I don't know that it's low, Jack to hit you where it hurts the most." With a yell of frustration, Jack leaped above Pitch's wave of and brought his staff down in the air, firing blasts of ice at Pitch from above, who managed to keep dodging. Jack closed his eyes and focused, following Pitch's pattern. He then unleashed a blizzard at where he predicted Pitch to be next. Pitch didn't see it in time and was caught up in a swirling tornado of ice and snow. The black cage around Jamie dissipated and he ran to Jack, practically sobbing as the fear he was trying to hold back came flooding back to him. The winter spirit held the boy close and flew back to Jamie's house, keeping the blizzard swirling around Pitch –but moving it to Antarctica, on a plain where there were no shadows. He knew Pitch would eventually get free, since Jack couldn't keep his focus on the blizzard constantly, but it would have to do for now.

After the incident, Jack and the other Guardians helped Bunny with his egg production and distribution and Easter went perfectly – with a ton of extra security, after that Easter when Jack became a Guardian. Let's just say that there were a lot of yetis and fairies – and ice. A lot of ice. Right after Easter, Sandy, Bunny and Jack headed back to Hogwarts, where Bunny promptly headed to his dormitory and collapsed on his bed. It had been a difficult Easter since Bunny had to condense a month's work of preparations into two days. When he came back down the next day, he groaned.

"I am never doing that again," he said heavily.

Hermione noted their return and immediately wondered where they had gone. Where did they get the authority and permission to leave, anyway? No one left over Easter break. She let it slide, but the fact stayed in the back of her mind.

With Umbridge as the High Inquisitor, her classes quickly erupted into chaos. The school was full of pranksters, but the four who were, without a doubt, more active than the others were Fred, George, Lee, and of course Jack. Skiving Snackboxes were well under way, with Fred, George, and Lee creating the formula and Jack perfecting it. Jack had even found the antidote to Nosebleed Nougat.

DA meetings had gone on as usual. So far, they had learned Reducto, Expelliarmus, Stupefy, and tonight they were going to do Patronuses. The three Guardians headed up to the Room of Requirement. When the lesson started, Jack was the first to get the hang of the spell and soon had a dolphin Patronus splashing happily around him. A little while later, everyone had gotten their Patronuses. Suddenly a thump sounded around the room and dust fell from the ceiling as the room shook. The Patronuses dissipated into the air and suddenly the wall of the Room of Requirement exploded, revealing an angry Umbridge and determined Slytherins. The occupants of the room froze as each person stared, then the silence was interrupted by Umbridge's girlish voice.

"Get them!" Realizing there was nothing he could do without using his powers, Jack allowed himself and the others to be taken in.

Several days later, Dumbledore was gone, Umbridge was Head, and detentions were being handed out like candy, so of course Harry was ready to try to break into Umbridge's office to contact Sirius.

"Are ye crazy?" Merida hissed. "She'll catch ye like that!" She snapped her fingers for emphasis. Harry was determined to talk to Sirius, though, so the others staged a distraction. It failed, barely, and they, Ginny, Neville, and Luna found themselves back in Umbridge's office; since the Head's office had locked itself so Umbridge couldn't get in. Snape arrived and Umbridge demanded Veritaserum.

"You used up all my stored interrogating students. I will not have more for a month," Snape said smoothly, as Umbridge practically hopped up and down in rage. Snape left and Umbridge pointed her wand at Harry. As Jack looked at his "brothers" he saw their eyes harden and Jack knew they were about to take action and blow their cover. He was mad too, but he had enough sense in him to know that if they blew it now, it was all over. He opened his mouth to protest, but Hermione beat him to it.

"Wait!" she cried. The occupants of the room all turned and looked at her as she offered to show Umbridge Dumbledore's "secret weapon." Everyone watched as Umbridge marched Hermione and Harry out of her office. The door swung shut. Chaos ensued.

Ginny somehow got hold of her wand and a Bat-Bogey hex hit her captor in the face. While everyone was occupied, Jack whispered "Engorgio." His staff returned to its normal size and he froze his captor in a giant block of ice. Meanwhile, Sandy had wrapped Zabini in gold sand, then bounced him off the wall a couple times. When Zabini lay on the floor dazed, Sandy dropped a ball of dreamsand on his head.

"Subtle." Jack stepped over the Slytherin, shrinking his staff as he did so. Fortunately, everyone was too wrapped up in their own situations to notice. Ginny had disabled Crabbe and only Bunny was left in his captor's grip.

"Step back," was all he said. Realizing what he was going to do, Jack and Sandy stepped backwards. Everyone followed their lead, and…

BOOM. Bunny and Millicent Bulstrode erupted in a cloud of colorful smoke. Everyone could hear Millicent couching as they waited with bated breath for Bunny to reappear. The smoke cleared to reveal Millicent unconscious and Bunny was… not there.

Bunny snuck up behind Jack and jumped on him, eliciting a yell from the latter. Everyone who wasn't trapped in a glacier or unconscious doubled over laughing until Rapunzel got them back on track.

"Hermione and Harry are stuck with Umbridge, remember?" The very pink room echoed with "Oh, right!" and "Oh, yeah." Hiccup found some thick rope in a drawer (uh, why did she have that?) which they used to tie up their unconscious opponents, and an "Approval for Whipping" statement, which Jack yanked out of Hiccup's hands and tore into so many pieces that even a Reparo wouldn't be able to put it back together. The group grabbed their wands off Umbridge's desk, making sure to take Harry's and Hermione's wands too, and ran out of the office. They met Harry and Hermione on the bridge and the two explained how they had accidentally-on-purpose gotten Umbridge kidnapped by a group of angry centaurs.

"But how did you get away?" Hermione asked.

"Ginny used an amazing Bat Bogey Hex and Bunny used some sort of awesome potion. And Jack made his captor-person be frozen in a glacier! Like my sister Elsa," Anna said excitedly. That caught Jack's attention.

"What did you say?"

"My sister, Elsa is a specialist in ice spells," Anna said.

"Oh," Jack replied.

"So…" Bunny started and motioned for everyone to continue.

"Yeah! Let's go rescue Sirius!" Everyone rushed off, back to the edge of the Forbidden Forest.

"Uh, mate, how're we goin' to get to London?" Bunny asked.

"Ummm… Got it!" Ginny said. "Harry and Hermione are covered in blood. Those thestral-things Hagrid told us about might come. Didn't he say that they had an amazing sense of direction?"

"Yeah, you're right," Harry said. The group stood there until four thestrals came out of the Forest.

"Are those…" Jack said softly.

"Yeah… You can see them? Who've you seen die?" Harry asked curiously, and in Jack's opinion, quite insensitively.

"My… mom and dad," Jack said, thinking quickly. He was supposed to be adopted, anyway. But the question got him thinking. Who did he see die? Did Sandy count? Or did the death of Jack himself count? The majority of the group could see the thestrals, so the ones who could helped the ones who couldn't and soon the thirteen (the original ten plus Luna, Ginny, and Neville) were heading to the Ministry of Magic in London.

They landed at the telephone box Harry used to get to his hearing and the thestrals headed back to Hogwarts. It was blatantly obvious that thirteen people would never be able to fit in one telephone box, so they went in two groups: one with six people and the other with seven. It was still tight, but it was much better than if they all tried to squish in the box at the same time.

The second group emerged in the Ministry of Magic and joined the first group, who was heading to the lift. They all piled in and went to the Department of Mysteries.

"94…95…96!" Harry's words echoed around the previously silent walls. He swept his lit wand in a circle, illuminating the dark areas of the aisle.

"Harry, he's not here," Hermione's voice sounded behind him.

"But I saw him here! I saw him!" Harry looked around, then froze when Neville said his name.

"Harry… come look at this… it's got your name on it…" he said. Harry slowly walked over. A small glass ball with white glowing mist swirling inside it had his name on it. It read "Lord Voldemort and (?) Harry Potter." Harry stretched out his hand to grab it.

"Uh, Harry, I don't think you should touch that," Jack said. "It's too easy, isn't it?" Too convenient that it's right where you saw Sirius."

"But it's got my name on it," Harry said, entranced by the pearly mist. His hand reached out and closed around the ball.

"That's right, Potter. Hand it over," the drawling voice of Lucius Malfoy echoed behind him. Harry and the others gathered in a circle in the middle of the aisle. In front of Harry, Malfoy emerged from the darkness. Jack snickered and said, "His hair makes him look like a girl." Apparently Malfoy heard it and his eyes grew as cold as Jack's ice, if that was possible. He dismissed it though, probably assuming he would kill them all soon enough. He turned his attention back to Harry. "Hand it over, Potter.

"If you do anything to any of us I'll break it," Harry replied, sounding braver than he must've felt. A woman laughed behind Malfoy as she came into view.

"He knows how to play! Itty, bitty, baby Harry Potter." The woman said a baby voice. There was a sharp intake of breath from Neville and he said, "Bellatrix Lestrange." Jack's eyes widened as he realized this was the woman who had tortured Neville's parents into insanity.

"Neville Longbottom, is it? How're mum and dad?" Bellatrix said mockingly.

"Better, now that they're going to be avenged," Neville replied and pointed his wand at her at the same time that she pointed hers at him. Everyone froze.

"Now let's just calm down," Malfoy said, lowering his arms slightly in a placating gesture. "Harry. You can finally know your destiny, if you just give it to me." The group of thirteen glanced around. In each of the four aisles around them, Death Eaters were approaching. The group spread evenly between the four aisles and readied their wands.

"I've waited fourteen years," Harry said.

"I know," Malfoy said, fake sympathy dripping from his voice.

"I guess I can wait a little longer. NOW!" Harry gave the command. "STUPEFY!" Thirteen voices sounded in the Department of Mysteries. The Death Eaters disappeared, whether they were hit or they managed to dodge. The group ran. Naturally, they got split up.

Harry POV:

Of course there had to be Death Eaters waiting for them. Not to mention chasing them. He felt a hand grab his shoulder; he turned his head to see the gaunt face of a Death Eater. He yelled "Stupefy!" and the hand released him. He looked back to Hermione and Ron hitting another Death Eater with a ton of prophecies. No one else was behind them.

"Where is everyone?" Harry yelled over the sound of glass shattering.

"I don't know! Just keep running!" Hermione shouted behind him, having successfully knocked out the Death Eater.

Luna POV:

Neville and Ginny were with her, but Luna couldn't see anyone else. Luna wondered vaguely where everyone else was, but she couldn't stop running now.

Merida POV:

Rapunzel, Hiccup, Merida, and Anna were running down an aisle. Merida couldn't tell where they were because each aisle looked exactly the same, just a lot of shelves and little glass balls. Flashes of light and shouts of spells echoed off the walls. When Merida turned around, there was no one else around.

Jack's POV:

For some reason, he, Bunny and Sandy were being pursued by a good fifteen Death Eaters. With this many, there was no point in trying to beat them with spells, Jack realized.

"Ah, man," Jack said with a sigh. He enlarged his staff and soon all of the Death Eaters chasing them were laying in a pile decorated with frost, mini glaciers, dreams characterized by golden sand, and puffs of multicolored smoke.

"Uh, let's go before they get out of there…" Bunny said. The three ran through the maze of shelves, until… WHAM! Jack slammed into someone else, and there were shrieks as the collision caused a chain reaction and everyone ended up on the floor. They got up hurriedly and kept running, finally reaching a black door. Throwing it open, everyone ran through, only to find themselves free-falling towards the fast-approaching floor beneath them. Jack and Sandy fought the urge to fly.

A foot away from the floor, their fall stopped for a second and they all collapsed on the floor. Everyone got up and began to inspect their surroundings, Harry especially lingering on a strange veil. Before he could examine it further, the sound of rushing wind surrounded them. As everyone stopped to listen, Sandy and Bunny looked (slightly accusingly, in Bunny's case) at Jack, who shook his head frantically.

"Get behind me!" Harry said. The others lined up behind him in a triangle, with a few people at the back, all aiming their wands. Before they could actually do anything, the area around them turned black and nobody could see anything. Then everything was silent, and Jack lifted his head and stood up. He, Sandy, Bunny, and Harry were the only four left in the circle. Everyone else was spaced evenly around the circular walls, each held by a Death Eater and with a wand pointed at their throats.

"Are you kidding me?" Jack yelled, angered by the amount of suspicion this would cause. Malfoy smirked slightly and shot Jack a look that said "You're welcome" smugly. When Harry turned to look at him, he winced. "Sorry, Harry. Keep doing… whatever you're doing." As Malfoy began to confront Harry, Jack heard another rush of wind, then a bright light flared up behind Malfoy as Harry reluctantly gave him the prophecy. Malfoy turned around in confusion and was rewarded with…

"Get away from my godson," Sirius said and punched Malfoy in the face. As if summoned by a signal, the other members of the Order shot into the room, causing the Death Eaters to release their "captives." Tonks got most of the students safely out of the way, but since Harry, Sirius, and the three Guardians were all engaged in battle to some degree, there wasn't much she could do without getting hit herself. Instead, she stood in front of the other fifth years with Lupin, and the two fought off any Death Eaters that came close.

Another Death Eater joined Malfoy and Sirius and Harry began to duel the two. Meanwhile, a Death Eater snuck up behind Lupin. Since the group was mostly preoccupied watching the battle, no one noticed until the Death Eater managed to land a Stunning spell on Lupin, who fell unconscious. Tonks turned quickly and began to duel the Death Eater in close quarters. A Killing curse flew past her ear and she responded by shooting a Stunning spell. The Death Eater immediately used Protego to block the spell and cause it to rebound. Tonks, not expecting it, couldn't retaliate in time. She also fell unconscious. The Death Eater advanced on the students as all 15 of the Death Eaters that Bunny, Sandy, and Jack had previously defeated joined him. Only hesitating for a second, the students began to fire spells at the group rapidly and another battle broke out between the well trained Death Eaters and the nine students. About 10 minutes passed before all of the students were unconscious, along with six of the Death Eaters. The remaining Death Eaters approached the nine fifth years, Tonks, and Lupin, ready to begin using the Killing Curse.

In the middle of the room, Sirius had successfully gotten rid of the Death Eater that had joined Malfoy, leaving Malfoy himself and Bellatrix Lestrange, who had entered the fight. Harry, Sirius, and the Guardians continued to fight. In a pause between the streams of flying spells, Jack glanced over his shoulder at the opposite side of the room and saw the 10 Death Eaters looming over their friends and the two Order Members.

"Bunny! Sandy!" Jack hissed at the two urgently. When he had their attention, he pointed at the Death Eaters. Bunny cursed and he and Sandy rushed over, Bunny assuming his natural form as they went and Sandy's potion wearing off… again. Good thing he had extras.

The first Death Eater raised his wand, his mouth opening as he prepared to cast the curse. Suddenly a boomerang flew with deadly accuracy at his wand, knocking it out of his hand. A hole opened up before the Death Eaters and Bunny leapt out, standing protectively in front of the students. Soon, Sandy floated over and joined him, sand whips forming in his hands. The Death Eaters moved back a little, uncertain. The two Guardians jumped into action.

Bunny's boomerangs went flying everywhere, blocking most of the spells that the Death Eaters cast and knocking them out whenever the boomerangs managed to hit one of Voldemort's followers in the head. More clouds of multicolored smoke erupted in random places, effectively causing the Death Eaters to pass out.

Sandy raised his whips, hitting any Death Eater that came close. In between strikes, he threw balls of dreamsand, knocking out even more Death Eaters. In less than 5 minutes, the two Guardians were surrounded by unconscious opponents. Bunny immediately changed back to his human form while Sandy drank one of his extra potions allowing him to turn human again.

They looked back to the middle of the room in time to see Bellatrix Apparate to a higher point in the room and Lucius Malfoy get blasted off the dais. They rushed back to the others just as the unconscious students and Order members woke up. Bellatrix yelled "Avada Kedavra!" and a green jet of light hit Sirius. Time seemed to slow down as the grin on Sirius' face froze and he fell backwards into the veil and disappeared. Bellatrix ran, shouting "I killed Sirius Black!" proudly, provoking Harry to run after her, to get revenge. Soon after he left, Jack turned to the others, asking "Will he come back?" not unlike a child would. Sandy looked at him sadly and patted his shoulder, shaking his head. Jack became sad like the others, then put it out of his head. Harry had run after Bellatrix and there was no telling what had happened to him. They had to find him.

The three Guardians found him standing behind Dumbledore, watching him duel Voldemort. The battle was close, so close that it didn't look like either had the upper hand. Harry walked up closer to Dumbledore as he formed a large ball of water, trapping Voldemort in it. As Dumbledore pushed Harry back, he caught Jack's eye, who immediately knew what Dumbledore needed. Using his staff, which he still hadn't changed into his wand yet, he discreetly sent a small but powerful stream of frost into the water, decreasing the temperature of the water in hopes that it might numb Voldemort's magic slightly. It worked, but Voldemort obviously had immense magic reserves, as demonstrated when he caused all the windows to explode and the shards to race towards the five people standing there. Dumbledore cast a spell that turned the glass into sand, but Voldemort possessed Harry to give Dumbledore a rather disheartening message, in Jack's opinion: "You've lost, old man." Harry managed to fight him off and Voldemort left Harry, reappearing a little ways away. As the Minister of Magic and the Aurors arrived, Voldemort stopped, then Apparated. Seeing this, the Minister froze.

"He's back."

Jack, Bunny, and Sandy arrived at King's Cross Station. They walked over to North and Tooth, who had again taken potions to blend in. They left the station just in time for all of their potions to finally wear off and for them to disappear, for most other people's eyes anyway. Right outside of the station, North threw a snow globe. The five Guardians disappeared and came out at the Pole.

"I hope you all had a good year. Enjoy your summer, you're going back to Hogwarts in the fall. All of you. Yes Sandy, you too, although you were in the seventh year."

Jack dropped his head into his hands and groaned. "I'm going back?"
