Ella's POV
"Yes Daddy, we'll be fine. You and Mama need to go. They're expecting you guys at the meeting soon" I urged, pushing my father towards the car my mother was already waiting in.
They were both needed for a scene to be shot in the Caribbean for a movie to be aired in 2015. Apparently they were playing a married couple with rambunctious kids…I don't know all the details, but they won't be away very long. Three, four days tops, so they say.
But I have to stay home alone…with the kids. Great.
"Are you sure you'll be okay? Because I can be on the next flight home if you need-"
"Daddy, seriously, we'll be fine. Just go. I'll call you if we need anything, but I'm sure we won't" I smiled reassuringly. "Besides, I'm sure the family will be stopping by to make sure we're doing fine too. You have nothing to worry about."
"If you're sure" he sighed and kissed my head. "Love you sunshine."
I leaned up and kissed his cheek. "Love you Daddy."
The twins were still asleep, so they'd said goodbye yesterday. I sighed in relief as they pulled out of the driveway. I love my parents, and I'm gonna miss them like crazy, but they can be overdramatic about leaving me and the twins home alone.
I looked around, wondering what on earth I was going to do for the next half a week. We're not allowed to leave the house unless one of the family members come and get us, or we call Mom and Dad, telling them we were going to one of their houses.
This is going to be one long week.
"Toby, what are you doing here? I thought your family was going on vacation this week?" I asked, confused to see my best friend at my door. My parents left around five this morning, and the twins woke up at seven. It's now around noon, so needless to say, I've been busy.
He shrugged. "Kelsey's on her honeymoon, Porter and Maddie are busy with the new baby, and Lys is at college. I decided it would be no fun going alone…and they wanted a second honeymoon after the wedding. Apparently watching their firstborn all grown up and married brought back old memories and they wanted to relive their love story" he said rolling his eyes. "My family is weird, Ells."
"Join the club" I muttered, opening the door wider for him to come in. "My parents aren't here. They're filming is the Caribbean, so I'm with the twins for however long they're gone. It's supposed to be three or four days, but I suspect closer to a week."
"Oh…well do you think Austin would let me spend the night? I kind of already told them it was okay to go on their trip, so their gone and I'm alone" he said looking sheepish. I smiled a little.
"Well even if they said no, how would they ever know? And it's not like you could help it if you 'accidently' fall asleep here" I smirked. He laughed, finding a seat on the couch. I sat down next to him and snuggled up to his side. I can't help it. I needed time to relax after the time I've had this morning.
"Wow, bad girl. I'm shocked" Toby laughed, wrapping his arm around me. I sighed in the comforting feeling he provided. I love my best friend so much. "Nah, I'd feel better if I knew your parents were cool with it."
I rolled my eyes. "Whatever."
"So where are the kids?" he asked after a few moments of silence. I smiled as Lucky came up and laid at our feet. The poor old dog wasn't moving around as much as he used to. But I love him anyway.
"I sent them upstairs until lunch. I love those two to death, but they can be mini tyrants sometimes" I sighed. I could feel Toby laugh from beneath me.
"Sounds like a plea for help to me if I've ever heard one" he said smiling down at me. I just cuddled up to him more, loving the fact that I had a great guy like him in my life to call my best friend.
We stayed like that for a while, just enjoying each other's company…until my stomach betrayed me and ruined it. I was hungry, yes, but I didn't plan on getting up yet!
Toby laughed. "Sounds like someone's in the mood for lunch about now."
"I don't want to get up" I whined, snaking my arms around his middle and hugging him tightly so he couldn't get away. "You're mine."
Toby's POV
"You're mine."
She has no idea the impact that one little sentence has on me nowadays. Ever since the wedding last week, I haven't been able to shake the strange feeling I get every time I see her. It sucks. I'm a guy, and she's my best friend. I shouldn't be thinking like this, but I am.
I looked down at her and squeezed her shoulder. I love her so much. "Don't you forget that" I said kissing the top of her head. I sighed, closing my eyes. Simple gestures like that are things I've always done, but now it's different. I don't want it to be different.
"Never" she grinned. I gulped. She's always looked pretty when she smiles.
How have I never noticed how truly beautiful she is?
There was suddenly a knock on the door, and I got up to answer it. When I looked back, Ella groaned and leaned all the way down on the couch dramatically. I just shook my head smiling.
"Who is it?" I asked, not wanting to open the door to a killer…
"It's your sister. Open the door Toby!" Alyssa yelled from the other end. I rolled my eyes and yanked the door open to see Alyssa standing there, holding Mia. Kelsey thought it'd be nice to put her kid off on Lys while she and Hunter went on their three week honeymoon.
"Uncle Toby!" Mia screeched, leaning towards me. Lys made an 'umph' noise, trying her best not to drop the kid, and I quickly reached over to grab her before she fell.
"Hey kid" I said smiling at her.
"Great, glad you're happy to see her. Here's the diaper bag and her clothes. Call me if you need anything" Alyssa said, handing me a couple of bags and rushing down the stairs. My eyes widened and I ran after her.
"Whoa, hold up. Where do you think you're going?" I asked, holding Mia close to me. I just left the stupid bags up on the porch.
"Oh…I didn't mention that?" she asked sounding sheepish. I shook my head rapidly. "Well, you see….I kind of really need you to watch Mia for the rest of the week, maybe longer. I'm sorry! I didn't know we'd have to do this thing for school. It forces me to stay on campus all week. I'm staying with a couple of friends, but I can't keep a kid there. Babies and sororities do not mix well, especially if we walk in while they're partying."
I blinked. Alyssa talks a lot more now that she's in college than she did when we were little.
"Toby, please, I'm begging you. Please do this for me! Please?" she begged, sounding desperate. I sighed but nodded anyway.
"Fine, I guess I can watch the cutie for the week. Kelsey knows about this, right?" I asked to be sure. I wouldn't doubt that she'd already assured Kelsey I could watch Mia for her.
"Yep, you know me so well. Thanks little bro" she said cheerfully before reaching up and kissing my cheek (I'm a good bit taller than her despite the age difference). I rolled my eyes but smiled anyway. She's my sister. What are you gonna do?
"Yeah, yeah. You owe me" I said. She nodded-though I know she doesn't mean it-and got in her car, quickly driving away before I had the chance to change my mind.
"Well Mia, looks like you get to spend some time with Uncle Toby" I said, smiling down at my adorable niece. I really don't mind watching her, it just would've been nice to have some warning first.
I walked back in the house and grabbed Mia's bags off the porch. Ella looked up from whatever show she was watching and raised her eyebrows at the fact I was holding Mia and her bags. "What 'cha doing?"
"Babysitting" I muttered. She laughed.
"For how long?"
"A week or longer" I sighed. "Don't you just love the short notice family gives you?"
She laughed. "Well you gotta live with it I guess. Don't worry, I'll help you take care of her. We'll have fun, won't we Mia?" she asked in a baby voice as she tickled my niece. I couldn't help but smile at the sight. My girls. Gosh, I sound pathetic.
"Aunt Ella!" Mia exclaimed, throwing herself towards Ella who was not expecting that.
"Whoa there, hang on sweetie" I laughed. Ella grinned and reached for her. I passed her over, rolling my eyes. "Always like Aunt Ella better."
"Yeah, yeah" Mia said, nodding her head. I pouted while Ella laughed.
"It's okay Toby, I still love you" Ella said kissing my cheek. She pulled back with a grin, and then got up, taking Mia towards the kitchen. "Let's go get you some apple juice!"
I leaned back against the couch and grabbed the home phone, dialing Austin's cell number. After about three rings, he picked up. "Hello?"
"Hey Austin."
"Toby? Why are you calling? Is it Ella? Are the kids okay? What's wr-"
"Austin" I said cutting him off. "Nothing's wrong. I was just wondering if Mia and I could spend the night tonight…and maybe more than one night."
"Oh, okay. Yeah, that's fine. Wait, why are you even there? Weren't you supposed to be on vacation? And isn't Mia supposed to be with Alyssa?" he asked. I laughed.
"All true, but not anymore. Since I was the only kid that would be able to go on the trip, I decided not to go. Well, more like I overheard them talking about wishing they could go on a second honeymoon after seeing Kelsey's wedding, and I decided it'd be nice to let them have that. And Alyssa has something for college on campus for a week or longer, so I'm watching Mia until either she or Kelsey comes to get her" I explained.
"Wow, a lot of words. Anyway, sure you guys can stay the night, or however long you need. I'd actually feel better knowing Ella and the kids weren't home alone" Austin said.
"And I'd feel better knowing Toby and Mia weren't alone too" Ally said in the background. Okay, apparently he's on speaker and Ally was listening to all of that.
I looked behind me to make sure Ella wasn't listening. "Yeah, well, don't tell your daughter this, but I would too. I didn't like the fact that they were here with no one else. Don't worry, I'll make sure nothing happens to them."
"Thanks Toby, you're a life saver. I hated leaving them, but Ella insisted we go" Austin sighed. "That girl's as stubborn as her mother."
"I heard that!" Ally exclaimed rom the background. I laughed.
"Yes, I know that for sure. Between you and me, she looked exhausted when I got here, saying the kids got up at seven and she sent them upstairs for lunch. Speaking of, we should probably order a pizza…." I said more to myself than to Austin.
He laughed. "The little devils will do that to you. I tried to warn her, but you know Ella. She's relentless."
"Quit talking about our daughter like that, and hurry up. We're supposed to be on set in two minutes" Ally chastised. I laughed.
"It's okay, I gotta go too."
"Call if anything goes wrong, and take care of my daughter, you hear?"
I laughed again. "Of course. Later Austin."
"Bye."
"Why were you talking to my dad?"
I jumped about ten feet in the air at that, thinking it was Ella. I gasped and put a hand to my now racing heart. "Gosh Emma, you about scared the crap out of me. What are you doing?"
"Sorry" she giggled, coming over to sit in my lap. I raised my eyebrows in amusement, but if she acknowledged that, it sure didn't seem like it. "Anyways, I'm hungry. Ella said we had to stay upstairs until lunch, but it's almost one" she whined. I smiled.
"It's okay. I was about to order a pizza, but I gotta ask Ella first."
"Where is she?" Emma asked.
"In the kitchen feeding the baby" I said nodding towards the kitchen.
Emma giggled. I gave her a confused look, which only made her laugh harder. "What?"
"It sounds so cute when you say that. Like it's meant to be" she said smiling like a lovesick teenage girl. Ella got this kid so stuck on romance, it is unbelievable. The child never believed boys had cooties, and she had her first crush before she was two.
"'Meant to be'?" I repeated. I have no idea what she's talking about.
"You two sound like a married couple with their first baby!" she gushed. My eyes widened and I quickly started to protest to the idea, but she cut me off. "No sir, don't you start with the 'we're just friends' crap you try to pull. I see the way you look at her. Like there's no one else in the world you'd rather be with…so romantic."
"I have no idea what you're talking about" I lied. Oh, I knew exactly what she was talking about….now. I have always looked at Ella like that, because it was true. She's my best friend for a reason, but now I realize it's because I love her so much.
"Yes you do" she protested. I sighed. With this child, she won't let something go if she really wants to make her point known as truth.
"Emma, would you stop it? Ella and I aren't together, okay?"
She nodded. "I know you aren't together…yet. But you will be. Trust me, I know. I know you, and I know my sister. You two are just lying to yourselves and everyone else. One day you'll wake up and realize your undying love for one another."
"Emma Faith, leave the poor boy alone" Ella sighed, coming in the living room with Mia on her hip and a Sippy cup in her other hand. "Sorry it took so long. I couldn't find where Mama put the Sippy cups when Lizzie grew out of them."
"It's cool. Wanna order a pizza? The twins are getting hungry, and I know you are too" I said giving her a pointed look. It was hilarious (and I'll admit, adorable) earlier when her stomach growled.
"Sure" she shrugged, shifting Mia from one hip to the other. As I made the call, I couldn't help but think of what Emma had said. Now I'm thinking like a girl. Is that what all guys sound like when they fall in love?
But looking at Ella holding the baby like that, treating her with the care only someone with a true maternal gift could…wow. Ella's always had that. No wonder she wants to be a foster mom.
And come to think of it, I wouldn't mind that either. Of course I'd love to have my own kids, but Ella's adopted and look how she turned out. Mia too, even though she's only two….
"I see it again" Emma whispered in my ear, snapping me out of my thoughts. I'd handed the phone to Ella so she could order whatever pizza she wanted. She knows what kind I like.
"See what?" I asked, diverting my attention from my best friend to her little sister.
"You're staring at her like she's the most amazing prize in the world….you so love her" Emma said, but this time it wasn't loud or squeal-ish. She just said it with an adorable smile, like she knew something I didn't.
Oh, but I knew.
"Emma" I sighed. How do you explain this kind of thing to a ten year old without flat out lying to their face?
"I know all about your 'just friends' nonsense" Emma said, now frowning. "I just don't get why you guys can't admit it. I mean there's you, Aiden, Evan…I just don't get what you're so afraid of. Oh! And Jake" she said smiling at the end. I raised my eyebrows at that.
"Jake? What about Jake? Who does Jake like?" I asked, suddenly feeling protective. Jake likes Emma? Or does Emma like Jake…and since when?
"Duh, Jake likes Bri! And it's so obvious she likes him back. Remember how she climbed that jungle gym after him? It's because she was so worried about him" Emma smiled.
"You started to also, if I remember correctly" I reminded her. She shook her head.
"I'm a concerned friend."
"Who's afraid of heights" I pointed out. She huffed.
"Just because I'm afraid of heights does not mean I'd let one of my best friends get hurt or possibly kill himself up there. I mean, Ella's just as scared of heights and she went all the way up there to get him. Why wouldn't I go up three steps?" she countered. I nodded. That was a good explanation. "Oh! And when Bri kept begging him to stay when his mom came and got him from the reunion. It was so cute."
"Technically, you did that too" I laughed.
"Only because Bri made me. She begged me to go over there with her so she wouldn't look too desperate. She would've gotten Lily to do it with us, but Evan had her handled" Emma laughed.
"True" I laughed too. "So you're saying Bri likes Jake? I could've sworn that would be you….but I had my suspicions on Bri too."
"I totally do not like Jake, trust me. I love him as a friend, but he's so not my type" she said shaking her head. I laughed.
"And what is your 'type'?" I asked smiling. I just love this kid. She's so much like Ella, yet she's got her own personality as well that makes her different. It's fun getting little glimpses into the person inside the kid you once held as a baby.
"Well for one thing, someone my best friend/cousin doesn't have a crush on" she said making me laugh. "But I like a guy who is a little more mature, but knows how to have fun. He doesn't have to be super smart, but he needs to at least have some common sense. I don't care if he's popular or not, as long as he isn't self-obsessed. If a guy jokes about that is one thing, but actually being a jerk is another."
As she went on and on, I couldn't help but smile. The kid tries to act so grown up sometimes, but she's a cutie.
"Gosh Emma, stop describing Toby and just tell him you have a crush on him" Evan said rolling his eyes as he walked through the room and into the kitchen.
"Hey! I do not have a crush on him!" Emma yelled to the top of her lungs. I had to stifle my laughter. She turned back to me, her cheeks pink. "I'm sorry, I swear it's not true. You're awesome, but you're Ella's" she said smiling. I rolled my eyes as she went screaming into the kitchen. "Evan Ray, Toby acts more like a brother to me than you do! All you do is…"
As she walked away, their voices downed out and I was left shaking my head in amusement.
"Pizza should be here soon. It's free if it's over thirty minutes. Let's hope they get stuck in traffic" Ella said laughing. I smiled.
"I get what you mean about those little rug-rats. Emma sure can talk" I said laughing.
"And all they do is fight" Ella said rolling her eyes. "Evan will say anything to embarrass her, as long as it doesn't really hurt her. He's a good brother, deep down."
I laughed. That's what I think of all my siblings. My brother's a good brother…deep down. On the surface, sometimes I just want to pound his face in. And my sisters are annoying as crap (which is why I'm watching Mia) but I love them. They would be there for me no matter what.
"So I hear both the Moon sisters have a crush on me…" I teased. I just love getting a reaction out of her. I can't help it.
She rolled her eyes. "Okay, first of all, neither of us have a crush on you. I don't like anyone, and last I heard Emma likes some guy at her school named Riley. But that was before summer started."
I was strangely happy to hear she didn't like anyone…
"Riley, huh?" I asked just to keep the conversation going.
"Oh yes, word in the fifth grade is that he was going to ask her out but didn't get the chance because Gia Henderson stole him right from under her nose" Ella said raising her eyebrows with a big grin on her face. I laughed.
"Me?" Mia asked, pointing to herself. Ella laughed.
"No sweetie, I said Gia, not Mia" she said smiling down at her. She bounced her on her hip for a few seconds before coming to sit by me, repositioning the baby on her lap.
"Ah, so Riley's taken?" I asked, smiling. I love hearing about little kid romance.
"Well, I'm not sure about now. Em came home, devastated when she found out he was going out with Gia. Apparently she's the most popular jerky girl at school who's 'totes boy crazy'. Sound familiar?" Ella asked. I nodded.
"I know, I so want to smack Lindsey every time I see her" I shuddered at the thought of our school's trash. I don't mean that offensively, but it's a nice term compared to what others have called her.
"That's the kindest action that comes to mind" she rolled her eyes then smiled down at Mia. "You're not gonna grow up to be a meanie, are you Mia? No, you'll be the sweetest little thing that gets all the good attention and the sweetest romance."
"Uh, I don't think so" I said cutting off her little fantasy. "The day I let a boy come even an inch towards her will be when I drop dead."
Ella laughed. "You sound just like my dad. He's already got a death wish for anyone who comes ten feet near me, Emma, Bri, Lizzie…basically all of us."
I gulped. If only she knew how scared that makes me. Not that I'd ever admit it. I don't admit to weakness like that. Yes, I told her about how I don't want to disappoint my dad and all, but this is different.
I'm terrified of Austin….the guy who was basically my first ever role model as a kid. Of course, he was the cool uncle sort of figure. He was a superstar. What little kid wouldn't think that was cool?
"Except you" Ella continued, cutting me out of my thoughts. "My dad loves you…and Jake, but that's beside the point. Emma, as you now know, doesn't like him at all; Bri does. I just want to see Uncle Dez's reaction when his daughter starts dating…and my dad. Man, he might kill the kid if he acts anything like he did when Porter started dating Maddie. You remember that?"
I nodded. "Hard to forget. I thought he was a dead man back then."
"Me too" Ella nodded then started laughing. "I remember Mom and Dad's wedding, back before I even met y'all. Uncle Dez told me they were all freaking out when Dr. Murphy made a comment about when Maddie gets married someday. Then he said my dad started crying, thinking of when I get married" she smiled. "So sweet."
I laughed. "Well you still got a few good years, I assume?"
"Oh yes" she grinned. "I will not be one of those teenage cases, just because my parents are famous, We're the exception."
"I can see that" I laughed. "You've always been the exception."
"I'll take that as a compliment" she said, readjusting Mia in her arms who'd started dozing off.
"Good, because that's what I meant it as" I said smiling at her. "Here, I'll take her."
"Thanks, she was getting heavy" she said carefully passing my sleeping niece over. I smiled down at the adorable kid in my arms. Yeah, no way I'm letting this one near any boys. "I'm gonna go check on the kids; make sure they haven't killed each other."
When she left, I looked down at the sleeping bundle in my arms. "Well Mia, looks like it's just you and me. These Moons can get crazy huh?"
A small snore was her only response. I laughed a little.
"I here ya kid, they sure can tire you out. But they're worth it. You gotta love those three. Whoever doesn't is missing out. You'd have to be an idiot not to smile every time you see them."
Again, no answer. I sighed. I wish I had someone to talk to about how I feel, but Ella's the only one I would tell and we all know I can't do that…
Ella's POV
I basically just walked in and out of the kitchen to check on the twins. They were arguing, but not physically so I didn't want to be brought into it. When I walked back into the living room a few seconds after I walked out, Toby was having a sort of conversation with Mia…even though she was asleep. I smiled and listened quietly.
"…just you and me. These Moons are crazy huh?"
I smiled again, shaking my head. Of course he'd think that. Who wouldn't? Even the Moons think the Moons are crazy!
Toby laughed a little when Mia snored lightly in her sleep. I smiled. The innocence of being a sweet little baby…
"I hear ya kid, they sure can tire you out. But they're worth it. You gotta love those three. Whoever doesn't is missing out. You'd have to be an idiot not to smile every time you see them."
I grinned this time. Isn't he just the sweetest thing?
Toby sighed, and I figured it was about time to relieve his boredom. "Gotta smile when you see your Uncle Toby too" I grinned.
He looked up at me, seeming shocked that I was standing there. What? He didn't say anything crazy when I was listening…did he think I heard whatever it was he was thinking?
"They haven't killed each other?" he asked after a second to regain his composure. I flopped down next to him, snuggling into his arm since he was holding the baby and I couldn't snuggle in his chest. Not fair…his chest is comfy!
"Nope" I laughed. "Well…verbally, maybe. But as long as their still physically alive I'll let them hash it out."
"Sorry it's so late ma'am. Your pizza came at rush hour" the pizza delivery guy said when he got there…after forty-five minutes. I couldn't help but grin when he rang the doorbell and I saw the clock. Free pizza baby!
"It's okay, what do I owe you?"
"I was late…your pizza is free lady" the guy said looking at me strangely. Well I know that, but it was the polite thing to say. If he'd have tried to charge me, I'd have called him out on it. But since he didn't….
"Well here's a tip for telling me that and driving out all the way here in that traffic. Don't tell your bosses you got a tip though" I said smiling. He laughed, nodding his head. The guy had to have been fifteen. Probably just got that job. I sure hope he doesn't get chewed out for not getting here in time and giving a free pizza because of it.
"Ells, while you go get the pizza ready in the kitchen with drinks and all, I think I'm gonna go put Mia upstairs. That okay?" Toby asked after I shut the door. I nodded.
"Yeah, put her in my bed, but make sure she's surrounded by pillows to make a sort of crib in the middle" I instructed. He saluted me, making me roll my eyes, and walked up the stairs. The twins were still in the kitchen when I got there. "Kids, out."
They were still arguing, so only minor complaints and grumbling were sent my way for the command. A few seconds later, I heard the doorbell ring, but I couldn't get it and I know Toby couldn't either. From the crying coming from upstairs, sounds like Mia woke up.
"Hey guys, see who's at the door!" I yelled then thought better of it. I quickly placed the plates down on the table and ran to the living room.
"Why hello kids, how are you?"
"Good…who are you" Emma asked. All I could do was stare at the woman. Oh my gosh, this could not be happening.
Whoa! Who's at the door? Anyone can guess? There's several people it could be. In or out of jail? Could even be someone new…who knows? Oh right, I do! ;P Lol, sorry guys, I just had to leave it at a cliffy again. Their fun, give me a place to stop my chapters, and gets a bigger response out of the readers (good or bad).
Btw, this is another prewritten chapter I did in Florida.
