The hotel wasn't the best that either of them had ever stayed in, but it did the job. Martin was exhausted from taking care of Ben and the jetlag didn't help. The desk attendant was understandably perturbed by their disheveled appearance, but she gave them a key anyway. After hauling their luggage up three flights of stairs and then halfway through the hotel to find their room, the small beep of the door unlocking sounded like the best song in the world according to Martin. The room smelled of a heavy mix of astringent and sex, but neither of them truly minded it; both of them had been in a situation of a hotel room and beautiful women, with alcohol fueling the fire.
" Hmmm. There is only one bed." Ben mused and then smiled. " So who will get it?" Ben glanced over at Martin who just shrugged and Ben slumped slightly, pouting. " Party pooper." He muttered and taking the first steps into the room, placed his bag beside the bed and then, with exaggerated grace, fell onto the bed, his long legs penduluming him to nearly the other side of the bed. " Its seems that you'll get the bed?"
" It seems that I do now doesn't it?" Martin could see he blue tint of veins under Ben's pale skin as he stared at him. There was something about him that always kind of terrified Martin and now that he was taking a trip with him, the dread that Ben caused made Martin's stomach clench as if he had a massive cramp.
" Are you just going to stand there?" Martin started. Though Ben's eyes were closed he had this amazing ability to know where people were around him.
" I'll take the char then?" Ben's only response was to throw a pillow at him.
" So have you found anything new on her?" Ben asked as Martin pulled out his laptop. " I have to check." The Sharp, rhythmic clicks of the keyboard were slowly putting Ben to sleep, each one a step downwards into oblivion.
" Slowly the darkness parted and Ben found himself in a place he had never dreamed before. It appeared to be a ballroom, but there were no walls and no musicians. Besides Ben, there were only four other people, two women and two men. Suddenly the night was lit up by a red strain of a piano that echoed in the vastness of the room followed by a blue, a purple, and a teal note. The two couples stood up and taking their places on the floor began to dance. They reminded Ben of music box characters; each person set on their pedestals and forced to move by the way the gears dictated. But from these mechanic creatures came another person. Dressed in a soft green dress the moved delicately when she walked, the woman saw him, but didn't stop moving until she was in arm reach of him. She seemed almost shocked that he was there, another human in an empty world. The piano music still played and the dancers still spun in time with it, yet the girl remained still, her long locks of hair wistfully dancing to the music in the air as if were a wind.
" Who are you?" Ben whispered and the girl held out her hand to him. The fingers were long and well used; the hand was bigger than most women's, but Ben could tell that she was a craftsman. Her hand was too fluid to be nothing more than a hand. " I need to know who you are?" He watched as the girl's eyes widened and twitching her fingers brought Ben closer ad with a swift lunge, she grabbed onto his hand and began running. Adrenaline flooded Ben's system as they ran, their feet hitting the ground in time with each other and slowly the world began to change around them. He found himself in a vast forest where trees grew taller than he had ever seen, their limbs big enough to live in and yet the girl still ran. Ben kept up and discovered that he wasn't out of breath. Suddenly she stopped. Ben hit the brakes and was too late. The cliff loomed up and with a sharp movement, he turned and grabbed her by the forearms and fell.
The wind rushed up to meet them and Ben stared into the hole and with a gasp, he saw it. A faint light in the distance that was rapidly growing bigger and Ben felt fear course through him, but not for himself. He felt it for the woman who was now huddled close to him and pulling her closer, braced himself for impact. The light surrounded them both and with a cool puncture Ben let go of the girl who immediately began swimming to the surface of the pool. Ben followed. The aquatic world seemed to glow with life the blue not coming from the water, but the coral in the water. Ben was in awe of the place that he was in; the space was almost cathedral like, yet so cozy. He found the girl sitting on the smooth top pf a red crystal, its facets making a perfect chair. Seeing that there were no others, Ben decided to sit on the floor at the base of the crystal. The girl seeing his act of humiliation that Ben allowed himself to commit, she slid off the crystal and sat down next him cross-legged.
" Who are you?" The whisper was faint, but Ben heard it clearly for it carried to him in his heart.
" Ben. My name is Ben. What is yours?" The girl smiled, her hair turning a soft blue with the light from the water.
"I have many names," Ben watched as her fingers danced across a small shard of crystal, the surface reflecting her face.
" But you must tell me where you are from. I cannot explain why you are here, yet I have seen you before, in my dreams."
" I come from across the sea. In a land where the hills are emerald green and…" The girl laughed. " You come from London, do you not?"
" How did you know that?" Ben sat there flabbergasted at her deductive abilities.
" I can smell it on you. It is subtle, but it is there. Yet it the main smell that concerns me. You say you are sick, but you have no idea who you are do you?" Ben shook his head no.
"There is a legend that I have known for all my life that is a creature that comes from the night sea once a year and will share a bed with the women who deem the night perfect to sleep on the beach. No one knows this creature's name, but it will mate with the woman who he the most beautiful and then return before the dawn. The only problem is, is that the seed he carries with in needs a human male to produce an offspring for the seed is pure and needs the blood of human to enact its powers."
" So you are telling me that I am son of this creature?" The girl nodded slowly. " You have always been drawing to water, have you not?" Now it was Ben's turn to nod. Suddenly the girl looked up.
" We don't have much time, you shall find me again do not worry. For I shall always be with you." Ben felt her press something into his palm.
" This shall guide you." And once more looking up, the girl stood and walked down to the water's edge. Ben saw her turn her head ever so slightly…
" What is your name?" Ben nearly screamed and she smiled.
"Eithna." The world darkened as she stepped into the water and the world vanished to reveal the hotel room.
