Warnings: mentions of rape.
Chapter 10
"Talk to me, Kono." Danny and Chin walked through the doors into HQ, eager to hear the news that Kono found. "What couldn't you say over the phone?"
"Okay, so, I ran our suspects face and prints through the system." a few swipes on the smart table brought up the image of their suspect. "While I was waiting for that, I started the search I had talked to Cath about before she left the state; she gave me all the information she gathered and when I got back I noticed this guy right away. Calvin Zi is one of the five men who escaped three months ago with Jesse Thomas.
"He and the other four men, Frank Rhodes, John Wilson, Grant Dye and Victor Elton, were all serving life sentences for various crimes ranging from rape to stalking to murder. But according to Cath, no one has seen any of them since."
"What was Zi in for?"
"He raped his ex-girlfriend and burned her home down, with her inside. Was on the run for six days before he was arrested." Kono swings the file up for the men to read.
Chin sighs, not liking what he was seeing, "She survived,"
"At the expense of some mobility; she lost most of her right leg in the fire." Danny shakes his head as he goes through the rest of the files. "What I want to know is what Zi was he doing in the bank? Why go into the city where the chance of being recognized is high?"
"The witnesses I talked to said he didn't make any demands. He just opened fire and stood in the middle of the foyer until we showed up." Chin tells them. "He never said a word."
"Will somebody, please, please just give me something to work with here! I want to know what Zi was doing at that bank and-"
"Detective Williams?"
"What!" Danny spins around to see a younger HPD officer standing with one hand on an open door and papers in the other. He couldn't remember her name, but knows that he has run into her a few times in the last week or so. He also remembers that she is a rookie.
Without faltering, the officer says, "We just got another call about a bank robbery that happened across town. Ten thousand dollars were stolen by an armed man. One person was injured."
Danny rubbed the back of his neck. Today was filled with twists and turns and it made his head spin; he couldn't focus on another back robbery when he didn't know why Steve went AWOL. "Have someone else look into it." he says as evenly as he can manage.
The officer looks from Danny to Chin and Kono who hadn't spoken. With a sigh the rookie walks the short distance to the smart table and set down two photos. "With all due respect to you all, I really think you need to see this for yourselves. These were taken from a security camera behind the bank; a dark green sedan was caught leaving the scene around the same time a call was put into HPD about the robbery. We got the driver in clear view as she pulled away, but not of her partner."
Danny looks at the first photograph and frowns; the image was blurry and the woman's face was hidden slightly by her hair. He turns to the next photo just as the officer continues, "I'm sorry to say this but I believe that the woman in those photos is Commander McGarrett's wife, Taylor."
His face paled as he looked at the photo in his hands. He could feel Chin and Kono's eyes on him, the wondering question that was on their minds still unspoken as he slid the picture over for them to see. "She's right. It's Taylor." Danny runs his hand over his face. "And that means it was Steve who robbed the bank."
Steve wasn't sure how long he has driven, but guessed it was around two hours when a figure standing in the middle of the road caused him to stop. The figure soon became two, then four, all dressed in dark colored garb and armed with weapons.
"Turn the car off, McGarrett!" commanded one man as he aimed his weapon. Steve did as he was told, sparing a look at Taylor who was roused in the back seat.
The driver's side door was opened, a strong hand grabbed his shirt and something cold was pressed against his neck. "Where's the money?"
"In the trunk,"
"Wilson, go check it out. Dye and Elton, get the chick." the man holding his shirt ordered. Steve watched as two of the men pulled Taylor from the car. She was just now waking up and confusion quickly covered her face.
"W-what's going on?" she asks when she sees, and feels, two men holding her arms. Panic begins to rise up inside her she finally sees McGarrett still sitting in the car. The little bit of light from the vehicle was enough for the long knife in the man's hand, and against the SEALs neck, to be seen. "Steve?"
"The money's all here, Rhodes."
"Good. You know what to do. But first," in a swift motion the blade was removed from Steve's neck and sliced across his left upper thigh. "We need some of your blood."
"No!" Taylor screamed. She watched as McGarrett stifled a scream of his own, watched his left hand instantly went to his wounded leg. Watched helplessly as she was held back. "Steve!"
"All right, Commander, let's get moving." the man on Taylor's left moved to help pull Steve from the car. They were careless in doing so, letting the door hit Steve as he was led away.
"Steve!"
"Shut up!" the man holding her arm backhanded Taylor across her face, stunning her slightly. Her balance wavered but she didn't fall. Dye held her arm tightly in his hand.
"Boss said not to lay a hand on her!" chastised the leader, Rhodes. The message was clearly revived as a low growl was the reply. "We need to get going. I don't want to drag her dead body through the jungle."
Rhodes turns to Wilson who was removing a dark tarp from his backpack. "Boss tell you where to go?"
"Yeah, I got it. Don't worry."
"Just don't blow this. You know how Zi got the short end of the stick."
"I know, I know. You ain't got to worry, brah."
Rhodes shook his head but quickly got back to the matter at hand. He faced Taylor who was looking worse for wear as time went on. "I'm guessing you want that next injection now, Mrs. McGarrett?"
Taylor didn't acknowledge the man. She shivered in the jacket Steve laid across her. Her hazy eyes worked hard to stay focused on the injured Steve.
"Whatever, let's get out of this infested place."
"It looks like it's gonna rain soon, Rhodes. Maybe we should stop before we get caught in it."
"Don't even think like that. It's almost midnight and Boss wants the Mrs. alive when we arrive. Plus we're getting closer." Rhodes pointed his handgun forward as he spoke. "Just radio the Doc, and tell her to be out front with the Venom."
"Fine."
The walk from where Taylor and Steve were met with the four men, to where they were being taken passed by slowly. While Taylor was all but being all but carried by Dye and Steve walking/stumbling while favoring his injured leg, time was working against them.
"Move it, Commander! Or'll make your beautiful lady scream for me." Steve was pushed forward for the umpteenth time. He bit his lip to prevent a wince and sarcastic remark from leaving his mouth, but a groan escaped instead.
He forced his movements to quicken, told himself to ignore the pain that covered his leg. He focused on Taylor and the fact that the sooner they got to wherever the hell they were going, the sooner she could get the injection.
But Steve knew that he was losing a lot of blood the more he walked on his leg. The wound bled freely. He didn't know if Rhodes intended the cut to be so long, and didn't know how deep it was. If he didn't get something to stop the bleeding-
"We need to stop that bleeding, man. I don't want a dead SEAL on my conscience." says Elton suddenly.
The last thing he wanted to do was care for the injured man. Rhodes knew that his boss didn't care if Commander McGarrett came in a little beaten. He knew that either McGarrett wouldn't survive this "game" anyway.
So he didn't care, at all, if someone tied something around the man's wound. He'd personally like to leave the Commander in the jungle to die. One less person to worry about. "Use that jacket she's wearing to tie it off before I change my mind."
Rhodes doesn't wait for either man. He pushes Dye aside and grabs Taylor's arm once the jacket was removed, continued to lead her on the path to their location, leaving Dye and Elton to care for and bring Steve behind him.
Off in the distance, a light can be seen. Sighs of happiness come from the two men holding onto Steve's arms as they knew that they won't have to be out in the jungle for much longer. Only minutes separate them and cool air.
"What're you gonna do with after this, brah?" asks Elton.
Dye thinks for a moment. "I'm getting the hell off this island. Nothin' left for me here."
"I hear ya. I'm thinking of doing the same."
Suddenly, after twenty minutes of walking and stumbling through the dense foliage had passed, Taylor's legs gave from underneath her. Rhodes releases her arm and she crumbles to the ground silently.
Steve made towards her, but a gun was pressed into the small of his back. "Taylor!" he says through gritted teeth.
Rhodes kneels down and presses two fingers to the woman's neck. None of the men had brought a flashlight, so he can't see anything, but can feel a weak and slow pulse. He yells, "Ah, shit! Boss won't like this. Run ahead and have the Doc meet us out front!" he says to no one in particular.
After Dye leaves to follow the order, Rhodes turns back to Taylor and gathers her into his arms none too gently.
A whimper leaves lips as she is jolted around. Steve moves forward again and is welcomed with a blow to the back of his head from Elton. "Bastards!"
"I would be careful of how you play your few cards, Commander." sneers Rhodes. He begins to walk Taylor towards a light that was coming from a house. "I don't think you want your wife's blood on your hands."
