Prologue Arc:
The 24th Tenkaichi Budokai Saga:
Chapter 10: The Fourth Match! Goku VS. Yamcha

After the last match, the crowd was growing excited for the next contestants to enter the arena and duke it out in an all-out display of showmanship and skill. And Tien could honestly say that no match had made him feel better than the one he had just been in. He was happy to have finally reached the native warrior, who had left the tournament grounds for parts unknown. He would definitely be on the eye out for him again. He had so much potential.
Goku and Yamcha helped Tien enter the waiting area, still wincing as every so often pain flared up through his body. "That was one hell of a match, all right." He thought. "Upa's even stronger than I am. I can't wait to see how far he progresses."
"Tien, are you okay?" Chao-tzu, his best friend, asked him in concern.
"I'm fine, but I don't know if I'll be ready in time for the next fight," the Crane student replied.
"Hmph." A rude voice called, and they all turned to find Yajirobe standing there, holding a brown burlap sack in his hands. "Well, it's just a good thing we anticipated something like this happening."
"Hey, Yajirobe…" Goku said. "Are those… are those what I think they are?"
Yajirobe nodded. "One bag of Senzu beans, straight from Korin."
"Oh man, thanks for bringing those Senzu beans, Yajirobe!" Goku said.
"Tis what I do," Yajirobe said flippantly.
Goku handed the bean to Tien, who took it in his mouth and chewed on it before swallowing it down in one big gulp. The bean's restorative properties swept over his battered body as cuts stitched themselves back together, blood faded into his flesh, and bruises vanished. A few seconds later, Tien stood up, now completely healed.
"Thank you, Yajirobe." Tien said, inclining his head gratefully. "Now I can fight at full strength with whoever makes it past this round."
"That's right!" Goku exclaimed. "Our match is right after this one!"
He turned to stare at Yamcha with a cocky grin. "Are you ready?"
Yamcha gulped once, more unnerved at the prospect of facing Goku than he'd been earlier. "Uh, sure, sounds like fun."
But then, a minute later, the look was replaced by an expression of calm confidence. "Oh, so what if it's Goku I have to battle?" the desert bandit mused. "I've learned a lot these last three years. Who knows? Maybe I have a chance of beating him if I go all-out."
"Um, by the way, call me crazy, but why did you bring those Senzu beans to this tournament, Yajirobe?" Chao-tzu asked him.
"Oh, you know, the usual reason." Yajirobe said with a smirk.
"Krillin?" Goku asked.
"Krillin." Yajirobe confirmed.
"Oh, some friends you are!" Krillin scoffed, glaring at both of them while the others burst out laughing. "What a mean thing to say! Why, I oughta go home right now and forget about this whole tournament!"
"Aw, come on, Krillin, we're just kidding," Yamcha said.
"Yeah, we know you're a great fighter," Goku added. "You beat Yajirobe like it was nothing."
"Not that that's saying much," Yamcha said.
The others broke out into laughter again, all but Tien, who sometimes just didn't get humor.
"Oh so that's the thanks I get for bringing these Senzu beans, huh?" Yajirobe snarled. "I knew I should have stayed home today!"
"Aw, come on, Yajirobe! You know we're just joking." Goku replied, patting the samurai on the back.
"Hmph, whatever you say, Goku." His friend replied derisively, before assuming a more serious tone as he crossed his arms. "Anyway, joking aside, I brought the bag with me in case that insane maniac, Piccolo, came back."
At the mention of the Demon King's son, everyone stopped laughing, becoming deadly serious.
"You're right. Now that you mention it, I have yet to see him around here." Krillin replied, spreading his senses further around the area, but discovering no trace of the evil ki that belonged to the young demon.
"I bet he's hiding after the beatdown Goku gave him three years ago!" Yamcha said with smug confidence.
"Don't be so sure." Tien responded seriously. "He may be planning a sneak attack on us. We can't let our guard down."
"Tien's right." Krillin chimed in. "If Piccolo returns, we have to be ready for him. I didn't spend these past three years training my butt off just for friendly competition. I wanna be strong enough to fight him."
"Oh come on, guys, if he returns, Goku will whoop his ass like he did last time!" Yamcha continued.
"Last time, Goku nearly got himself killed." Tien pointed out. "We simply can't rely on him forever. Strong as he may be, that can't be an excuse for us to neglect our training or else he'll become our crutch, a shield to hide behind when things look bleak. We must work as hard as we can to catch up with him." The three-eyed man replied decidedly.
As he heard the exchange, Goku's grin grew bigger and bigger. He could feel his friends were driven to become more powerful and catch up with him. And that created an intense emotion inside him. It was excitement, pure and simple. The joy of two separate sentiments swelling into one: the burning desire to test his strength against the strongest there were, and the feeling of companionship his friends' determination gave him.
"That's the spirit, guys! I'd hate to see you guys get rusty for relying too much on me! We're all in this together!"
The assorted fighters nodded, feeling the innocent man's simple words fill them with inspiration.
Further chatter was interrupted by the booming voice of the announcer.
"Alright, ladies and gentlemen! The next round will begin in a few minutes! Contestants Goku and Yamcha please step into the arena!"
"You hear that, Yamcha? It's our turn now!"
"Yeah, let's go and give them a show they'll never forget." The scar-faced former bandit replied with a smirk.
And so, both men walked up to the arena, the audience cheering on both fighters, though a notable majority seemed to prefer Goku.
"These two are also veterans returning for another round! However, this will be the first time they've even been in a direct confrontation! In this corner a renowned baseball star and notorious martial artist! Give a big applause to none other than Yamcha!
"And in the other corner… we have another old veteran from the tournament! The last tournament's champion, Son Goku!"
Immediate cheers were made upon mention of the spiky-haired man, who simply grinned innocently, waving back at the audience.
"They've both returned for yet another exciting Tenkaichi Budokai!" The announcer went on. "And with Yamcha never having once made it past the quarterfinals and Goku fighting to hold on to his title, there's a lot at stake in this match!"
Yamcha fell over. "Hey, you don't have to keep harping on that, you know!"
"Just a little fun fact for the audience." The announcer said.
Just then, the drums began beating, rising in tempo and pitch until they seemed to be matching the beating hearts of the two combatants eagerly awaiting the moment that would decide their battle. Finally, when it seemed neither could take it anymore...
*GONG!*
"BEGIN!"
With a howling war cry, Yamcha instantly charged at Goku, who awaited him expectantly, not breaking his stance a bit.
Delivering the first blow, the long-haired man unleashed a flurry of punches and kicks at the current Champion, who skillfully parried and dodged his blows, like moving aside in the gentle flow of a stream. The crowd watched in anticipation as Yamcha pressed forward with all his might against the taller man, who was actually being pushed back inch by inch.
"Amazing, Yamcha!" Goku praised as he remained on the defensive against Yamcha's furious onslaught of punches and kicks, which were moving practically faster than even the audience could see. "You've certainly improved a lot since last time we fought!"
"We were only kids back then! I've yet to show you how far I've come!" The older man declared fiercely, unleashing a powerful upward kick against Goku's chin. But the other warrior was well prepared and threw himself back, avoiding the strike with a backflip.
Having taken some distance from Yamcha, Goku decided that it was time to go on his own offensive. With a war cry of his own, the spiky-haired fighter leaped into an aerial charge at his opponent. Yamcha anticipated this and leaped out of the way, high into the air. Smirking at his friend's reaction, he proceeded to take flight in pursuit of him.
"Oh, damn, I forgot he could fly!" Yamcha cursed himself as the messy-haired warrior flew upwards with a series of punches and kicks. Yamcha caught one that almost hit his face, just narrowly grazing his cheek, and then aimed a punch that Goku leaned backward to avoid as it swiped across his face, grazing his nose. However, Yamcha could no longer sustain his height as gravity began to reassert its hold on him, and he went tumbling to the ground.
"Now's my chance!" Goku said happily, flying at Yamcha as he prepared to strike him out-of-bounds.
"Ha, guess again!" Yamcha said, holding his hands up to his face. "You're not the only one who learned to copy Tien!"
And Yamcha shut his eyes tightly.
"SOLAR FLARE!" He yelled.
Goku screamed as the flash lit up his optical nerves. A few of the audience members who had been present since the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai managed to shield their eyes in time, but otherwise there were screams of pain from them too.
Yamcha used the momentary distraction to land safely in the ring, however, that was all he had time to do before Goku launched a new offensive on the ex-bandit. Suddenly he was all over him, punching and clawing at every inch of Yamcha he could get at. It was all Yamcha could do to dodge or block the blows, and for a while, he wondered if he was going to lose, if it was his destiny to remain in the quarterfinals for every tournament he ever entered.
"No, I will make it past this round!" He thought desperately. "I just need… one… little… opening!"
There! Goku had overextended himself near his elbow to launch a punch at Yamcha's face, and twisting with the motion, Yamcha moved to the side and slammed his fist in Goku's side. Yamcha gathered ki inside and let it all out in a primal roar.
"ROGAFUFUKEN!" He cried, and his aura blazed with the flaming intensity of a wolf as he threw himself at Goku, forcing the Champion on the defensive now. Goku jumped over blows, caught them in his fist, or just dodged them altogether, but one thing was clear as Goku was being driven across the arena…
"Amazing!" The announcer said. "It seems that Yamcha has taken control of this fight! And now it's Goku who's being forced back, barely able to keep up with the speed of Yamcha's attack! Will he be able to keep up?"
Goku was having difficulty blocking Yamcha's blows, and more and more made it past his defense as Yamcha's fists connected home with Goku's body, sending shockwaves of pain rippling through his nerves.
"This is it, Goku!" Yamcha shouted as he brought both fists together and smashed them into Goku's torso, sending the pure-hearted fighter flying through the air and crashing into the wall, breaking it to pieces and burying Goku in a pile of rubble.
Yamcha sat down in the center of the ring as his wolf aura faded, panting after his exertion.
"Wow, that was a lot more draining than I thought." He mused. "Goku really has gotten better. It felt like punching a tractor tire."
"And Goku is down!" The announcer declared. "I'll start the count! One… two… three…"
"What the… no way! Goku is down?!" Krillin cried in disbelief.
"I can't believe this…" Tien said, echoing his friend's thought. Who would've thought Yamcha would be such a resourceful fighter?
"Four… five…"
"What if he's left out of the ring? I've never seen Goku lose of the first round!" Chao-tzu exclaimed in surprise.
"Six…" The announcer continued. "Seven…"
"This is insane, there is no way Goku can lose, can it?" Yajirobe said.
"Eight… nine…" The announcer said, bringing a finger down. "Te —"
And Goku chose that moment to bust out of the rubble, his clothes a bit torn, but otherwise, he looked completely unharmed.
"Wow, this is nuts, people!" The announcer said. "Goku's back and he's not looking very happy! There's not even so much as a scar or a deep bloody gash on this fighter! The only difference is that his clothes look a bit ruffled! But then again I guess that's what we've all come to expect from Goku."
Yamcha stood. "I can't say I'm surprised. I knew you wouldn't go down that fast, Goku."
"You've improved a lot, Yamcha, though now, it's time for me to get serious." Goku said.
"What the…?" Yamcha began, before realization hit him. "Hold on… He's gonna take off his weights!"
With a cocky grin across his face, Goku instantly took his wristbands off his hands, letting them fall on the arena ground with a heavy thud. Immediately afterwards, he threw his boots away, then proceeded to slip out of his weighted shirt.
"Ah... much better!" the messy-haired warrior said said, putting back his orange top and stretching around for a bit. "Well, Yamcha, what do you say we skip with the warm-ups and then begin round two now?"
Now that he knew he was no longer weighted down, Goku flared his aura around him, and his power level skyrocketed.
"Whoa, guys, can you feel that?" Krillin said. "This is it. Goku's getting serious."
"Yes, and it looks to me like Yamcha's in some serious trouble." Tien added.
"He's Goku." Yajirobe snorted. "No one can defeat him."
Yamcha watched with increasing desperation as he felt the sheer amount of power emanating outward from Goku's ki. "This isn't good. His power level must be three times stronger than what it was before! I've only got one shot to defeat him now… my special technique. I… just hope that it's enough."
"Impressive, Goku. I guess it's time for me to get serious as well."
And with that, Yamcha reached deep inside himself, pulling out as much ki as possible, strengthening his muscles, and before their very eyes, his aura seemed to mutate and shift and it took on a wolfish appearance, which reared its head back and howled.
"SHIN ROGAFUFUKEN!" Yamcha roared, and then took off running at Goku, which appeared like the pounce of a wolf.
Goku once again awaited his friend's attack, raising his hands in a defensive position. He was prepared for anything he threw at him this time. When Yamcha was close enough, power exploded from the two combatants' bodies. Miniature shockwaves were being produced by the force of their blows. Their strikes came even faster and more savage than before.
It was like watching two super quick titans fighting. The ring was literally shaking from the force of the attack was a continuous light seemed to shine from the center where Yamcha and Goku were locked together in a furious flurry of lightning fast punches. The ceramic tiles of the ring were being worn down and a tiny crater was slowly forming where the two were standing. Some of the audience ducked down in cover.
"Wow, what a fight!" The announcer yelled, riding through the quaking of the ground. "Even from this distance, you can feel the force of the blows that the two are creating! I can't tell who's winning or losing or in fact, anything significant at all! I don't even know why I'm talking now!"
*BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM!*
All that the crowd could hear, besides the ki emitting from the two fighters' bodies, was the smack of flesh hitting flesh.
Finally, the two jumped apart, both panting and breathing heavy.
"Wow, you've gotten… a lot better… Yamcha." Goku complimented his longtime friend.
"Ever since our first fight together, it's been my greatest desire to surpass you." Yamcha told him. "And now, I'm closer to that goal than I ever have been before. I will defeat you and I am gonna make it to the semifinals!"
"Huh, we'll see about that." Goku said, holding up his hands to his face. "You're not the only one with a surprise attack."
And Goku quickly shut his eyes.
"SOLAR FLARE!"
Another bright flash of light lit up the entire arena. More crowd members were prepared this time, but still a good amount found their eyes hurting as they screamed in agony. Yamcha barely was able to get his eyes closed, but he had no time to think, as Goku was all over him now, hitting Yamcha fiercely in an attempt to end their battle as quickly as possible.
Once the light had died down, Tien, Yajirobe, and Krillin all saw something upsetting.
"Watch it, Yamcha!" Krillin said. "You're coming close to the edge of the ring!"
Gritting his teeth, Yamcha grounded his feet on the ground, refusing to bulge one more inch. Goku responded in kind by pressing further on his attack, yet at the moment, it seemed they had reached a standstill.
"Amazing, he's actually standing his ground against Goku!" Krillin exclaimed in shock.
"Yes. But the question is, for how long? His energy reserves won't last forever. Yamcha is getting tired." Tien pointed out.
With a growl, Yamcha ducked to avoid a devastating blow from Goku, and then quickly jumped high one more time, creating distance between both fighters again.
Goku quickly swiped around, ready to charge in pursuit on him, however, a sudden spike in Yamcha's ki made him hesitate. His suspicions were confirmed when he saw Yamcha on mid-air, cupping his hands.
"Ka… Me…"
"Ah! Yamcha is about to use the Kamehameha!" Krillin pointed out.
"Ha… Me…"
Goku smirked, gathering ki on his own and cupping his hands to the side as well.
"Ka… Me… Ha… Me…"
"Goku, too!?"
"This is it. Both of them are going to give it their all. It's all or nothing." Tien stated solemnly, staring intently at the arena, which was now glowing blue from their charging energies.
"HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" Both warriors roared at the same time, thrusting their palms forwards and unleashing all their accumulated ki at each other.
The blasts erupted from their hands and hurled at each other in yet another display of raw power. The arena began shaking up as they met each other, releasing a giant shockwave upon impact.
"Whoa! And here I thought Chao-tzu's fight with Tao was crazy!" Krillin cried out in shock.
"To think we're so early in the tournament and we are already giving it our all!" Tien replied, equally surprised.
Back at the fight, the two warriors continued their struggle for victory as their beams pushed against each other, unleashing shockwaves and crackles of electricity as they struggled for supremacy. Crack began to appear on the arena as the tiles began breaking apart, with some fragments beginning to float. Wild gale winds blew away at the spectators, sending anyone unprepared tumbling back.
"This is… amazing!" The announcer declared, fighting for dear life to hang on to the edge of the ring. "From this distance, it feels like a hurricane blowing, just as fiercely and intensely as our combatants! Truly one of the greats in the history of the Tenkaichi Budokai!"
To the outside eye, there was no change between the two bright beams of light, however…
"Goku is not going to last." Chao-tzu noted. "Though they seem evenly matched, Yamcha is pouring much more ki into his Kamehameha."
"Ah, so you noticed it too." Tien observed, turning back to the fight with an eager grin. "And I get to fight whoever emerges. One thing's for sure, it's gonna be one heck of a bout. They've both come a long way in such a short amount of time."
"Maybe Yamcha will finally make it past the quarterfinals!" Krillin yelled excitedly, causing everyone to fall over.
"I don't know, I still don't think 'wolf-boy' can do it." Yajirobe stated.
"Are you kidding?" Krillin exclaimed. "Just feel that power! Yamcha must be even stronger than Goku by this point!"
"Huh, just you watch." Yajirobe said, crossing his arms. "I bet Goku's got some new ace up his sleeve. He'll pull through."
"Well, it wouldn't surprise me." Tien said.
"I will NOT lose another quarterfinals match!" Yamcha thought as he dumped just as much ki into the blast as he possibly could. "I've come too far, sacrificed too much, just to lose out in the end once again!"
As if the Kamehameha Wave had heard him think that, perhaps spurred on by his sudden desperation, the blast inched forward, and slowly, inexorably, headed back in Goku's direction. As their friends watched, totally awed by what they were seeing, Yamcha's own blast started gaining ground, pushing back against Goku's beam as it moved closer and closer to the messy-haired warrior with the force of freight train, slow, but inevitable, unstoppable. The distance between the two blasts was closing all the time, and they could feel Goku's ki rapidly diminishing.
"It won't be long now." Tien said quietly. "Yamcha's blast is gonna overtake Goku's any time now."
"Goku!" Krillin shouted, concerned.
"Yes!" Yamcha cried eagerly. "I've got him! I may be the first person to ever defeat Goku!"
Suddenly, with instant defeat staring him literally inches in the face, Goku cocked a cheeky grin.
"You played a good game, Yamcha, but still not good enough."
And then, to the shock and total disbelief of everyone watching, Goku did the impossible.
Reacting with lightning-quick reflexes, Goku dropped the Kamehameha, faster than anyone would have expected, but before the speeding beam could slam directly into him, with perhaps millimeters to spare, Goku disappeared, and both Kamehameha Waves passed the crowd harmlessly. Seeing potential innocents might get hurt, Yamcha directed the beam upwards as he cancelled the blast, which trailed off before dissipating completely.
Catching himself before he could hit the arena floor, Yamcha nonetheless fell to one knee, panting and gasping in exhaustion. He turned to find Goku standing there, looking winded and very tired, but overall very satisfied. Goku had that same big, goofy grin on his face that seemed to be a trademark of his.
"That… was the most incredible thing I've ever seen!" Tien said as sweat dropped down his forehead. "I didn't think it was that possible to cancel a blast so quickly without losing huge amounts of ki in the process!"
"Not only that, but he moved so fast!" Krillin said, wiping at his eyes after the effort of trying to follow his movements. "He moved so swiftly I couldn't even follow it! How in the world could he dodge that attack? Yamcha's Kamehameha was right in front of him!"
Yajirobe smirked and chortled. "See? I told you Goku's on top. He's got this match in the bag."
Still panting, Yamcha turned a gimlet on Goku, but buried within was respect.
"I see," he said, sounding impressed. "You weren't losing ki; you deliberately channeled less power into the beam, knowing that I'd get desperate and pump everything I had into it. But that was very risky what you did, Goku, waiting to dodge the beam once I had exhausted my power supply. What if you couldn't get away from that in time?"
"Then I would have lost." Goku said simply. "But you can't get anything you want in life without a little risk."
And then Goku began stretching, moving his arms and legs up and down with a few vigorous massages and twists, making sure to work all the kinks out, and then cracking his neck. Suddenly, he smirked.
"So, should we end this now?" He said. "We both know who's going to win. You're doubling over and I've still got half my power left."
Like Goku had wanted, Yamcha had put his full power into the Kamehameha in a last-ditch effort to take down Goku and now he was too weak to even stand up properly, much less compete with Goku.
"Yes." Yamcha said with a nod as he rose to his feet, clutching his arm, wincing a little as his strained muscles screamed in protest. "I underestimated you, and I paid the price for it. Looks like fate has found me again and I won't be making it past the quarterfinals."
"Aw, cheer up, buddy!" Goku said. "You would have won if you had only conserved your ki a bit more. You wasted too much too soon. In a fight, you can't do that until you know your opponent. But enough. I really wanna move on to the next match and fight Tien."
And moving with blinding speed, so fast that no one in the audience could see it, Goku smashed his elbow into Yamcha's chest with maybe 40% of his strength, but it was enough to send the ex-desert bandit sailing out of the arena as he landed, with a soft thump, on the grass outside ring.
Krillin sighed. "Well, looks like Yamcha just got Yamcha'd again."
"And Yamcha is out-of-bounds!" The announcer said, calling the match. "Goku will go on to fight with Tien Shinhan in the semifinals, so stick around and see that one, folks, because it looks like it's going to be a doozy!"
Yamcha struggled to get up, willing his weary muscles to move, but just then, Goku extended his hand to his friend, and, smiling, Yamcha took it as Goku helped pull him to his feet. He flashed him a thumbs-up.
"You've really improved a lot, Yamcha." Goku said. "If you'd worked a little harder, you could have beaten me."
"Nah, I'll save that for next time." Yamcha said confidently. "For now, enjoy your victory, my friend."
The announcer was given a sheet of paper, which he quickly read, before addressing the crowd once more. "I've just received word that the tournament committee is calling for a recess while repairs to the ring are finished, so please be here tomorrow morning bright and early where Krillin will be facing off against Chao-tzu in their long-awaited rematch!"
It was true; the ring was in shambles with many deep gouges and cracks the size of large boulders, and one edge of the stone masonry had completely caved in, not to mention the path that both beams had carved into the arena. All in all, it looked a war zone had taken place there.
Tien, Chao-tzu, Yajirobe, and Krillin all walked over to Yamcha and Goku, smiling happily.
"You almost had him, Yamcha." Tien noted. "Just a bit more planning and Goku couldn't have held you back."
"Still, that was a stellar job, Goku!" Krillin said. "You really kicked butt!"
"Thank you!" Goku said.
"So what do we do until tomorrow?" Chao-tzu asked. "The ring is in ruins and it's gonna take them a while to fix it."
"Well, since I still have some money left over from the boat ride, how about we all go out and grab a bite to eat?" Yamcha suggested.
"Oh yeah, perfect timing!" Goku said as his stomach gave a loud growl. "I'm starving!"
"The day you're not starving I'll take up selling shoes." Krillin said as he threw a sidelong glance at Goku.
Everyone laughed.
"Well, sounds good to me." Yajirobe said, patting his belly with a slightly worried look in his pupils. "A good feast might be just what I need right now. Especially when I get back to the tower. Korin said if I didn't make it past the first round he wouldn't feed me for a month."
"Yajirobe, you are so whipped!" Krillin laughed as the Z Warriors cheerfully walked out of the ring.
"I am not!" Yajirobe protested. "You take that back or I'll make you!"
"How?" Krillin said smugly. "You lost against me, remember?"
Yajirobe growled, but didn't really say anything, and they all took that as a sign that he had conceded the point.
Just as they made it onto the street, Tien turned to face Goku.
"So, are you looking forward to our rematch?" He asked, memories of the 22nd and 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai flashing through his head.
"Yeah!" Goku said. "I can't wait to —"
Just then, there was the loud roar of an engine speeding closer and closer, and they all turned to find a hover car barreling down on them! Quickly, with reflexes honed from years of training, they jumped out of the way, barely avoiding a direct hit, as the car came to a stop a few meters away from them.
And then they heard something that really scared them…
