The day that the babies are to be born starts like any other. The only difference is the fact that I decide to sleep in. I'm just really tired for some odd reason. I let my eyes flutter open. I look around to see a room devoid of anyone else. Tiir must've gotten up already. He really is sweet for letting me sleep. Soon enough, I won't be sleeping.
I sit up only to fall back on my bed with a gasp. Sharp pains are coming from my stomach and I feel nauseous. I feel liquid beginning to trickle between my legs. My eyes widen as I realize the birth of my babies is imminent. "Tiir!" I shout, hoping that he'll be close enough to hear me.
Thankfully, a moment later, Tiir rushes inside the bedroom. "Skye, what's wrong?" He asks.
"The…the babies! They're coming!" I shout. The pain is extreme, so much so that I have tears pouring from my eyes.
Tiir calls for Sairi before he rushes to my side. "Skye, it'll be alright," Tiir tries to comfort me. He takes my hand.
When the pain comes again, I squeeze Tiir's hand tightly. He winces. Despite my pain, I notice. "Sorry, Tiir," I apologize.
"It's okay. It's not your fault," Tiir replies.
Just then, Sairi rushes inside. "How far apart are your contractions?" She asks.
"Constant. I can't breathe," I gasp.
"Hold on. Your first child is almost ready to be born. Okay, on the count of three, I want you to push," Sairi starts. At my nod, she continues. "One…two…three…push!"
I do as she says despite how much it hurts. My first baby slides out into Sairi's waiting arms. There's no time to put my baby down before two more are born in quick succession. Sairi checks on my babies as I just lay back and breathe. I look over at Sairi. I panic when I see her performing CPR on two of my babies, one after the other. "What's going on?" I gasp.
"Your son and one of your daughters aren't breathing. I'm doing what I can," she replies. She continues CPR for another ten minutes before stopping and turning to me. "I'm sorry, Skye. They're dead," Sairi whispers.
My eyes widen. Tears begin to pool in them. "No! My babies! They can't be dead!" I screech. I try to reach over to my two dead babies. Tiir grabs me and holds me as I begin sobbing into his chest.
Tiir strokes my forehead. "It's going to be alright. I promise you that," Tiir whispers.
"But…they're dead…" I sniffle.
"You still have a living daughter. We have a daughter," Tiir replies while stroking my arm. "What would you like to name her?" Tiir asks.
I look to my little blond-haired-blue-eyed girl. "Lorelei. Let's call her Lorelei," I suggest.
"Lorelei. That's perfect," Tiir replies. Sairi puts a diaper and clothes on little Lorelei before putting her in my arms. She leaves.
Tiir crawls into bed next to me and Lorelei. We snuggle up against each other, keeping Lorelei safely tucked in the middle. Tiir plants a kiss on my forehead. "I love you, Skye," Tiir smiles at me.
"I love you, too, Tiir," I reply. I feel my eyelids growing heavy. I see that Tiir is also feeling drowsy. We both yawn simultaneously before we snuggle closer to each other. It isn't long before we both fall into the blissful realm of sleep.
Our sleep is interrupted maybe an hour later by the sound of Lorelei crying. "I'll tend to her," Tiir whispers in my ears. He picks Lorelei up and carries her outside to get whatever it is she needs at the time. I take this brief moment to fall back to sleep.
