Sam simply glared at his older brother for a moment, waiting on the male to spit out whatever was on his mind. "Okay, Dean.. so what does it say?" He finally broke the silence that had taken over the small room.
Dean's finger ran over the page again, finding the section he'd read to himself only a couple of minutes before but the second his mouth opened to draw in a breath he remembered the envelope tucked into his jacket. Instead of reading to his brothers-like he'd initially intended-he instead passed the journal to Sam and without a word gripped the cool paper and pulled it from his jacket. Again he halted while staring at his father's untidy handwriting scrawled across the front.
Knowing that there had to be something more inside the envelope to explain all of this Dean quickly pulled in a breath and flicked it open, then pulled out the single sheet of paper stuffed inside. With his back to his younger siblings he walked slowly toward the far end of the room to block out Sam's low voice as he read the passage from the journal to Adam.
'Dean,
If you're reading this then I'm dead and I'm sorry. I wanted to be there for you and Jo, I wanted to see Ben grow old and Sammy's first kid. I wanted to be there when Adam and Kevin could finally get married, but it doesn't look like I've got much longer in this world and I'm sorry as hell that I wasn't able to tell you sooner. I didn't have any proof except my own paranoia.
I felt like I was being followed, like someone was trying to get to me. It started four weeks ago at the shop when a lift gave out with me under it.. I would have thought it was malfunction if it weren't for the fact that lift was only a couple months old and I'd just had it serviced. Then the brakes failed on my car, thankfully I noticed it before I'd even left home.. after lookin' into it I found out they'd been cut.
Dean, I'm pretty sure someone is trying to kill me. I tried calling the cops, but Jody couldn't find enough proof to have someone keep an eye on things. I'm pretty sure I'm being followed too...
I'm trusting you with this more than anyone else because I know you'll figure it out. Watch out for your brothers and keep an eye on your mom.
Tell your mom I'm sorry.
I love you, kiddo.
Dad'
By the time Dean finished reading the letter from his father tears stained his paling cheeks. He knew that his father had never realized that Mary would be with him whenever the horror struck and he was sure that John was regretting her being in the car in his final moments. After tucking the paper back into the envelope and then his pocket he turned to look back to his brothers who were finishing the journal entry.
"Dean.. I think you might be right." Adam murmured faintly, looking as though he might pass out. The youngest brother quickly reached out to grasp the edge of the table to keep himself on his feet.
Sam's jaw clenched and unclenched in anger and irritation while looking at the passage without speaking. Under the stubble his face had paled considerably from the time he'd began reading to now. Where Adam appeared faint Sam looked nauseous. His gaze shifted side to side as he looked over several other things within the journal before snapping it shut and setting it onto the table.
"Sammy?" Dean began, stepping closer to his brother. "What's on your mind?" He could tell that there was something there, the small shift in Sam's shoulders and jaw gave it all away. If there was one thing Dean knew, it was his brothers tells.
"Dad.. he, uh, he called me last week in the middle of the night.. I.. I didn't think about it until I read it in his journal. Actually, I'd forgotten about it.." He stated without looking at either of his brothers. "He called you too" His gaze shifted briefly toward Adam to let the younger male know who he was talking to.
"What'd he say?" Dean asked as he moved a little closer, brows furrowing in concern by the way Adam continually looked weaker. Without a word he grabbed one of the chairs tucked under the table and positioned it behind the youngest male. His hands connected with the boy's shoulders to push him down as Sam began again.
"I.. it was like 4am or something and.. I mean, the only thing I really remember was him telling me that he loved me and Jess.. I just.. I thought he'd been drinking or something. Told him I loved him too and asked why he was calling in the middle of the night, he said he had to go and hung up. I went back to sleep and didn't.. I didn't think about it until now.." Sam said in a gradually smaller voice as his eyes danced around the room, looking anywhere but his brothers faces.
Adam shook his head quickly, "I don't remember Dad calling me.." he murmured.
"He talked to Kevin." Sam responded in a monotone. The three were silent for what seemed an eternity, simply staring off into space while dealing with their own thoughts. Finally, Sam broke the silence by clearing his throat. "Do you think Dad knew.. I mean.." a sigh fell from the tall man's lips, "do you think he called us because he knew?"
Dean nodded softly, "I think that's a pretty safe bet.." he responded quietly. "Unless dad was just completely paranoid..someone killed him." He stated bluntly, fighting the urge to throw things around the room.
"Who?" Adam voiced the question they were all thinking, his pale eyes quickly jumping between the elder males faces. After a couple more minutes of silence both shook their heads because neither had an answer, neither knew what to say. When it became apparent that neither was going to speak up Adam frowned and asked the next question on their minds. "What do we do?"
Sam looked at Dean for a moment, then to Adam and then pushed himself to stand, moving slowly back to the metal box on the table to stare into its depths. With a sigh he lifted a ledger from the shop out, "we start reading, looking through this stuff.. try to find something that doesn't fit. Dad wouldn't have put all of this in here if it weren't important.. right?"
The elder male let out a quick laugh and forced a smile while stepping up beside his brother and patting the taller man on the back. "I knew you were the brains of the family."
With a deep breath Dean picked up the journal from before while Adam grabbed the first thing he could from the box, all went to separate areas of the room and began their search...
