Like Pieces of a Puzzle
"And if you won't tell me, I'll tell myself."
Lucy glanced down at her wrist feeling content, the first emotion in hours. She had nothing to live for, that was her mind set and nothing was going to change that. Not even the promise of sickle sweet death at the edge of a blade.
Lucy guessed that this was when her life was supposed to flash before her eyes, but there wasn't much there to flash. She saw Makarov taking her in, befriending Gray, and her secret dance sessions. Then Natsu, just Natsu's face that made Lucys stomach wrench and her eyes wetten. The pink in Natsu's hair faded out in to some sort of rose, where had she seen that before, a Middlemist Red. The name came to her so quickly she couldn't process how it got there.
She mentally added that to the million questions she hoped her death would solve.
As the knife slid quickly against her skin, she hoped death would be quick. She almost doubted her actions when the immense burning pain had rippled over her body like a shock wave, almost.
All of her senses cut in and out, she just wasn't able to focus like she normally could. She faintly heard her name but it sounded as if the shouter was millions of miles away not holding her in his arms.
"LUCY!" She knew who screamed by the warmth that was surrounding her.
This isn't the worst way to kick the bucket.
"-omnia mea..."
Lucys eyes flashed open, open to just pitch black. A black so deep it made her question whether her eyes were really open. She glanced down to her hands, it was the first time she was glad to see her pasty white skin.
"So this is death" she muttered, gazing around unamused to see she was the only one for eternity.
"Oh dear Jude aren't we the luckiest?"
Lucy flipped behind her to where the words echoed from, to find more empty space. "Whose there?" She cautioned her words.
"Your wrong Layla, our little Lucky Lucy is."
Another voice and another empty corner for Lucy to turn too. She felt a warm glow on her back, it was almost a sensation of safety and security. Lucy felt like the luckiest girl in the world to have this sensation.
A bright white came across Lucy's vision and she shielded her eyes from the burning. A steady beat of a heart monitor came into Lucy's earshot, the blinding light filled out into the crisp cream of a hospital room.
Lucy's vision came very close to a girl who looked like a older version of herself who ran a 10 mile jog, she was a mess but still radiated beauty. "Hello my baby Lucy Lue, welcome to the world." She cooed through her crackled lips.
'Baby?' Lucy thought, she moved her head with as much control as she could manage, all she saw was the warm wrappings of a pink blanket that was entangled around her limbs halting them from movements no matter how much she fussed.
"Let me see my little girl." A burly blonde man with a bush moustache came into Lucy's small field of vision, blurred at the sides. He looked tough, but Lucy could see how much he cared for her behind his dark eyes.
The couple looked up at each other "We are a family" the women sighed, a tear shedding from her already wet face. They shared a sweet kiss and a small giggled escaped Lucy's lips.
'Wait a minute.' Lucy stopped 'was that my first memory?'
Black dripped over her parents faces and washed away the bleakness of the hospital room while the beeping of the heart monitor faded long away.
Lucy's eyes widened at the now familiar darkness, her breath stolen from her new findings. "I have parents?" She gasped, finding the words too unfamiliar to say. She tried them again: "I have parents."
Boy, did she like the sound of that.
She slumped over, falling to take a seat on the ground. Was that the only memory she could recall, weren't their others?
Lucy had only wished she could react in the memory, or try to speak to reach out to her mother and father. But it seemed she could only watch the memories happening as they did, through her younger selves eyes.
"Mama" a toddlers voice echoed throughout the nothingness.
She flipped to the noise, realizing she should be used to the disappointment of finding nothing.
"Mama come catch me!"
The same familiar whiteness grasped her from behind, giving Lucy energy and restoring her youth.
A quick pitter patter of steps rung through her ears, she was running. Her eyesight was low so Lucy presumed she was in her toddler years.
The young Lucy kept running, turning around to see the sweaty women from before- her mother- looking polished and also running.
Lucy did not know why she was running but she was determined to get to the door around the corner coming ahead. And she also knew there would be a door sound the cozy corridor of what seemed to be a mansion.
She couldn't place the feeling, but she knew she'd be safe here. It was the same feeling of when she walked into the dance studio at school. Like home.
When Lucy turned the corner she ran hard into the feeling of cloth and fell straight back onto her butt. She gazed up high to see her father, the man from the first memory, smiling happily at his silly daughter.
"Lucy darling always causing a ruckus aren't you." He lent down and picked up his small daughter to her feet.
"Sweetheart, I want you to meet your new friend. He's going to be coming over here quite often." Lucys gaze went past her fathers knees and met a young pair of onyx eyes, 'Natsu?' Lucy thought alarmingly.
"Natsu" the tall maroon haired man who Lucy identified as Natsu's father Igneel spoke. "Introduce yourself." He urged.
The little boy hoped forward, right into Lucy's face. Lucy, who seemed not used to having someone so young near her, was taken aback. They lived remotely in a forest and she was homeschooled so the opportunity never presented itself. "Hiya, I'm Natsu." The boy spoke eagerly with a smile.
Lucy stared at him for a long time before slapping him on the arm "Tag! You're it!" She yelled, giggling as she turned and ran down the hallway she came. "No fair!" she heard the young Natsu run after her.
The laughter of the parents drowned out as the memory faded into darkness yet again.
Lucy fell to her knees, her hands pressed against the floor holding her up. "So Natsu and I were.. Friends?" She rolled over onto her back, her eyesight just seconds behind her head movement making her dizzy.
"He seemed so, pure, happy even. How can that sweet boy and the Natsu I know now be the same." she pondered on what could be a reason to give such a personality shift.
"Luce you're no fun!" She jumped at the sound, and stood up completely as her eyes wandered the abyss for her next memory.
"Cmon in! It'll be fun I promise! You know I keep my promised dontcha!"
At first, all she heard was the trickling of a stream, next came the whistle of the wind as it glided through the leaves of tall trees. Next came the vision, she stared down at her legs, which where longer than before but still very young, she must have guessed to be around 7 years old. She was sitting before a creak, her little red mud boots swinging back and forth from the log she was sitting on. She gazed up to see Natsu running through the stream as carefree as ever.
'This is the stream Natsu once took me too.' Lucy inwardly realized as the young Natsu's playing ceases and he came over to her.
"Luce what's wrong!" He whined, "why are you being such a party pooper!"
"Natsu, we have big kid things to think about! I'm not sure about what mama said, I just wanna sit for a bit." Lucy spoke, inwardly she felt wise above her years.
"What's there to be not sure about Luce! One day, we are gonna grow older and marry and have our own kids to play with in the streams!" Natsu seemed so excited in this conversation that magically his boisterous treading in the mud had stopped almost completely.
"Natsu!" She suddenly shrieked, dropping to her knees in the mud. Natsu was taken aback and fell into the creak. Lucy slowly picked up a caterpillar from the mud and cradled it in her hands "you almost hurt it! You need to be more-" she was cut off by the sudden intrusion of another young boy. He must have been the same age as Natsu, but instead of the unusual pink hair he had blonde hair the resembled the shade of Lucys own hair; she felt uneasy as he approached her.
"Tsk tsk tsk, Natsu, surely you aren't telling Lucille that you're going to be her husband when I'm already her Prince Charming." The boy scoffed, grabbing Lucys hand and helping her up from the mud, but squishing the caterpillar in the process, Lucy froze staring at her hand, the boys were just background noise now.
"Sting! Leave Luce alone! She's my omnia mea not yours!"
"You are right, shes just my fiancé."
"Nah uh! She gets to chose and she hates you!"
"You think she likes someone who wets their pants!"
"it's not pee it's water from the stream! You think she wants a dumbie!"
That poor caterpillar.
Lucy almost wanted to scoff at the memory, some things may have been better off forgotten. But for reasons unbeknown to her, it made her chest warm when she heard Natsu talk of their future. But that Sting, Luch remembered all the terrible times she had with him. How her father made her equally share her time with both of the suitors even when she liked Natsu way better.
Sting was never even in the running.
Suddenly, the darkness that had been surrounding her this whole time, her safe place, her normalcy, became cold and distant. She felt uneasy, checking over her shoulder every few seconds but coming up empty handed.
"Lucy wake up!"
"Whose there!" Lucy yelled, her eyes endlessly searching.
It felt as if the darkness was not actually that, just her eyes glued shut; that would not last.
Her world began to shake and her body fell the ground, what was supposed to be a hard impact came cushioned. The darkness flashed away to a young girls bedroom, late at night.
"Miss Lucy please wake up!" Her maid, Virgo, whispered. She sat up groaning and rubbing the sleep from her eyes "Virgo what's wrong?" Lucy groaned, she felt half asleep but could sense the urgency in her maids voice. It was just then she heard the panic in the background.
Men groaning, gunshots firing, screams echoing everywhere. There was an attack on Lucys beloved haven, her home. "Virgo what's going on! Where's mom and dad!" Tears flew down the 10 year olds face, she was uncontrollably crying now.
"Not time for that now Lucy, you need to get up!" Virgo whispered, pulling the girl out of bed and rushing her out the secret exit that was hidden in Lucy's closet. "Where are we going!" Lucy cried, being pushed down a long and dark staircase to find herself facing her very own backyard, however it didn't envoke the need to play any longer.
"Lucy." Virgo said in the most serious tone Lucy had ever heard, worse that when she had eavesdropped on her fathers business calls or the one time she snuck into the garage when they were transporting 'goods'.
"I need you to run. Don't look back at all, I'll take care of things here okay. I'll tuck in your Dolly's and I'll make sure your stuffies are in their order, okay? I need you to run to Natsu's house, and don't stop." She gripped the child so hard on her arms Lucy could feel the bruises coming in, but that wasn't what was bringing about tears.
"But mom and dad!" She cried, pleading to see her parents.
An explosion went off and Lucy watched as the front of her house brightened in the dark night just as a man came out of the back of the house and found the two hiding. "Go!" Virgo yelled, pushing Lucy into the forest and running towards the attacker.
Lucy didn't stop crying or running, she kept wanting to turn back but she knew if she could make it to Natsu's house she would be fine. She could save her parents.
"Momma, Daddy!" She cried as she ran, huffing and puffing with every step, pushing her running abilities to the limits.
However, she stumbled, the wind knocked out of her and her feet knocked out from under her all by a root of a tree. She was dazed, flipping over to her back and nearly jumping out of her own skin when she heard the crunch of the fallen leaves beside her.
"Well well Ms. Heartfilia Heir, you're all alone aren't you?" A boys voice rang, the boy grabbed Lucys arm and lifted her off the ground.
Lucy wanted to fight, she wanted to run, but she was paralyzed. Fear had overcame all of her nerves and joints and frozen them.
The man grinned, a Cheshire Cat smile that made Lucy want to scream for Natsu, even if she knew he wouldn't come.
"Well it's just my lucky day."
Lucys eyes widened, she couldn't even produce tears anymore. She just hung there like one of the dolls she played with every day.
Everything went black.
