Chapter 10

I do not own The Covenant or Beautiful Creatures in any way.

'Let me handle this', Larkin said mentally.

"There must be a mistake officer. I'm her cousin Larkin Kent. I'm currently caring for her", he said.

"Her mother is requesting she come home", the officer said.

"My mother?" Kennedy said in disgust, "She's the one who left me!"

"Well she called and said that you had run away", the officer said.

Larkin presented a piece of paper to the officer.

"This is my mother and our uncle's information. I would suggest you call them. They will back up our story", Larkin said.

The officer took the paper and said, "I apologize for inconveniencing you miss. We'll be in touch".

The officer left and Kennedy slammed the door.

"How can she do this?! After all these years!?" Kennedy yelled.

A crack of thunder was heard.

"Kennedy, calm down", Larkin told her, "We'll figure this out".

On Sunday, two days later, the officer returned.

"Hello again officer", Larkin said, "How can we help you".

"I just need to ask you a few questions", he said.

"Go right ahead. We're fully willing to cooperate", Kennedy told him.

"Mr. Kent, do you have a paying job?" he asked.

The question shocked the two teens.

"No sir, I don't. We survive off our inheritance", Larkin told him.

"Is this apartment registered in your name?" he asked.

"No", Larkin said.

'This isn't going well', Kennedy thought.

"Then how was your cousin able to obtain an apartment, when she is not legally emancipated?" the officer asked.

To this, the two had no answer.

"I'm afraid that since Miss Ravenwood's mother has relinquished her parental rights, we have to place her into the foster system", the officer said.

"But I have money to support both of us", Larkin argued.

"I'm afraid that's not enough Mr. Kent", he said.

"What if we can find a family who will willingly take Kennedy?" Larkin asked.

"Then they would need to contact us and we'll get all the paperwork", he said.

"How long do we have?" Larkin asked.

"You have 48 hours to find somewhere to stay", the officer said, "I'm sorry, but that's all I can do".

"I understand officer", Larkin said, "Thank you".

The officer nodded and left.

Larkin looked over at Kennedy. "We'll find someone. I promise. I won't let them separate us", he told her.

"But who is willingly going to take two teenagers?" Kennedy asked him.

"Give me your phone", Larkin said.

Kennedy handed it over.

He dialed a number. "Tyler, it's me Larkin. It seems Kennedy and I have gotten ourselves into a bit of trouble. Anyway, we need to meet with you guys. It's important", Larkin said.
