Chapter 10: Past Reaches Present

/Flash Back/

Death was all around. So much of it that even the triumph of the war was not good enough to keep even a small amount of high spirits in the elves, because out of the alliance's their race had lost the most casualties. Especially the woodland elves who outnumbered the other armies in many ways. Elrond watched as the armies retreated to rest and aid the injured as he too began to aid with his healing skills and just as he was about to help aid one of the other healers he heard an anxious and panicked voice call out to him. He turned to find Galion covered in orc blood, part of his armer was torn off, and his braids were loose. Everything expected to see of anyone after a war, but the expression he held was worrisome. Elrond had never seen the ellon out of character like this. He was usually calm and knew how to hold his calm in any type of situation but now he saw him running for dear life towards him, his eyes were wide and his body quivered "Galion mellon-nin what is wrong?" Elrond made his way towards the woodland elf quickly "Thranduil! Dragons!" He was clearly out of breath as he skid to a stop and grabbed the peredhils shoulders firmly "Dragons appeared and attacked him and many others! Please Elrond he is badly wounded! He might-"and with that the usually composed ellon chocked on the knot in his throat still struggling to keep his tears from falling. Without another word Elrond went running towards the horses and rode hard to the wood elves camp. At his arrival a solder took his horse as he rushed off and over to the royal tent, which was surrounded, by healers and soldiers trying to do what ever they could to save their soon to be king. Elrond quickly took control once he entered the tent and laid eyes on the elf king. 'I will not let him die…he has suffered enough... and so have his people…' The healing period was harsh and heart breaking for anyone with in hearing distance of the screams that came from the tent. Elrond had to focus on his healing and tried to block out the screams and yelps of pain coming from the blond. The tendons and muscles were repairing themselves faster than usual due to the urgency in healing the prince. After what seemed like an eternity of an agonizing healing process, it was finally over. Thranduil had passed out suddenly in the middle of it all, unable to handle the severity of his wounds being rushed to heal in a short amount of time, and even then they weren't completely healed, just enough to ensure his survival and a steady recovery in the weeks to come.

/End of Flash Back/

Elrond shuddered at the vivid memory as he told the story to the prince, of course leaving out some of the horrifying detail not wanting this to haunt the poor elf's dreams as it did his and many other elves including the king. It almost seemed for a moment like his ears were still ringing from the yelling and screaming of that day, and not just from Thranduil but everything and everyone, from the war cries to the whimpers of the dying and cries of those who survived and lost. Many were lost that day…too many. "…Your adar had just lost his father in the war, and he was in such a critical condition that I myself was surprised he was still breathing when I reached his tent" Elrond stood at the side table as he spoke preparing an herbal tea for the wounded elf. "And so the next few months after that were hard for everyone. We were never sure that if we were to wake the next morning and find out if the woodland realm would lose their only heir or welcome a new king to the throne. Thankfully it was the later…" Galion had staid quiet the whole while as he began to remember that day. Tathar hadn't been there to witness Thranduil arriving to the camp with many others in a similar state, but he had arrived back in time to hear the cries coming from the royal tent, making him shiver.

Legolas was in a moment of shock once again. He knew his father had been burned by dragon fire but he was never told when or where and he never knew how severe it had been since he himself had only ever seen a glimpse of the scar on the king's face. After a moment of silence Legolas peered up at the Lord and cleared his throat "That was the first…" he spoke quietly and hoped that he would have sounded a little less on edge. He began to help Tathar and Galion with trying to bring down the kings fever to keep himself busy.

Elrond nodded his head and continued to speak as he made his way to the bedside and lifted Thranduil's head lightly to slowly give him the tea. "The second time was the passing of the queen… you were quite young Legolas and I'm not sure if you remember my visits during that time…" Elrond glanced over at Legolas watching him wipe a wet towel against Thrandul's forearm ever so gently as if he were tending to a newborn fawn. "I don't remember it very well…I do recall seeing you a few times and I recall visiting my fathers chambers one night…"

The more Legolas spoke and thought about it the more he began to remember. He looked up at Thranduil's sleeping face with sorrowful eyes "He looked just the way he does now… pale…weak…and frail…" his eyes stung as tears threatened to fall but he managed a soft gentle smile "I remember Galion had told me I couldn't see my father…so that one night I had decided to sneak into his chambers… I remember trying to wake him but he wouldn't. Not until I climbed up onto the bed and sat on him" he shook his head lightly at the memory. He had literally just plopped himself down like he usually did not thinking about weather it would have hurt him or not. "I remember Galion walking in the next morning and scolded me, but he ended up being scolded by ada instead" he chuckled and remembered Galions shocked expression when Thranduil sat up to scold him. Though he was still weak and tired Legolas had thought Galion was getting teary eyed from getting scold at and he remembers laughing at Galion because he had gotten in trouble by his ada. But now…now he knew Galions tears were from relief at seeing Thranduil awake and talking again. He heard a soft chuckle from behind him and noticed it came from the advisor "It was such a wonderful morning filled with laughter…" the brunet went quiet again after that comment and so did everyone else. They all calmly sat in silence tending to the king.

After a while their evening meals had arrived and were set at one of the tables. It seemed to Legolas that all of them weren't going to leave the healing room this night. Once Elrond deemed the sick elf to be stable enough for them to have a break they all shifted over to the table to eat "We will have shifts at night to keep watch on Thranduil's condition. Tathar and Legolas you two sleep while Galion and I take the first shift since you both just returned from retrieving the king" Legolas frowned and was about to protest when Elrond continued to speak "Legolas we agreed earlier that you would have your evening meal and go straight to bed. Do not argue with me child" Legolas blushed lightly at being called a child and got amused looks from his eldars "I am no child Lord Elrond and I wish to stay with my fath-"

"And you will be beside him Las, asleep and resting" Tathar chimed in so not to leave Elrond with the complete responsibility of having to deal with their stubborn prince. Legolas crossed his arms defiantly "If I am not allowed to have the first shift then I refuse to eat…" Elrond couldn't help the smirk that crossed his face. He had seen his other two companions smirking already in amusement and tried to hold himself back, but the prince was starting to act like an elfling 'two can play at this game' the raven haired elf mused as he began to counter the threat "Legolas if you do not eat your meal and sleep right after it I will not tell you the third time your father almost faded and when Thranduil wakes I will tell him you were giving us all a hard time. I do not think the first thing your father wants to know about his son after so long is that he was being stubborn and defying rules" Elrond stared down at the young ellon with his own arms crossed triumphantly as he saw a light pout. The defiance had left his eyes but he still held an unapproved frown. They all began to eat in silence including Legolas who gave in to his hunger and tired state. He glanced over at his ada occasionally as he ate to make sure he was all right while the other three ellon engaged into small chitchat.
