A/N: Okay I think that took a little longer than expected sorry, I had a bit of writer's block on how to write this chapter. I have to thank my friend Ollie because he helped me, he's like me own person Fitz J
Disclaimer: I don't own Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D or Silent Witness
Fitz paled at her question. "No, no it wasn't your fault Jemma" he brushed the hair out of her face "It was my fault, it was my insecurities, my stupidity"
Simmons looked up at him, twining her figures in his. "But why did you leave?" she looked down at their hands "What did I do?"
"I said it wasn't your fault Jemma, it was mine" said Fitz.
He hoped the conversation would end there, hopefully she was too tired to keep going with this and would leave it, but as her hand grasped his shirt tighter, he knew that she would keep going until she got an answer.
"Why?" came her voice, muffled from where she had buried her face in his shirt "What made you leave?"
Fitz sighed, hugging her tighter "Something that was really stupid" he stopped the hand that was fiddling with his shirt buttons "Something that I should have never thought about" he caught her eyes "I believed that I wasn't wanted here anymore, that I was needed, I thought you didn't need me anymore" he looked up to focus on the wall across from them. The movie was still playing, the background noise making the whole conversation bearable. He could see out of the corner of his eye, her face turn up and look at him.
But he still focused on the wall, trying not to notice the tears forming in the corner of her eyes. Jemma stayed silent, she could feel the tears beginning to roll down her cheeks as she looked at him. Her own mind couldn't understand why he didn't feel like he belonged, why he didn't feel that he was needed. The team would always need him, they would always need their engineer, and she would always need him.
In her mind, the future had Fitz, it had always had Fitz, ever since she had meet him he was always there in her visions of the future. Her life seemed to start the day she seen him first day of the Academy. Her completely new to America, slightly homesick as she had come over to finish her second Ph.D. Him, finishing his second PhD, straight out of two years at MIT, slightly more aware of the world around him. He made her feel a little more welcome and a little less homesick for home in England.
She remembers him vividly; he always sat just a few rows ahead of her in class, always head down, writing or designing. He never talked to anyone in class, he kept mostly to himself, when she asked about him after seeing that his score was only 1 point behind her, no one new him, no one knew anything about him. Besides that he was from Scotland and that he was apparently a complete genius at only 15. She was also only 15, but he held the title of the youngest student ever, due to him being 3 months younger than her.
She wasn't exactly popular but she had friends and she was considered the other end of the social scale to him. But after months and months of being in the same classes, continuously fighting for the top spot in exams, one of their professors has decided to pair them up for an assignment.
What a mistake that was.
They fought for weeks about the assignment, both of them having different views and after the assignment they vowed to never pair up again. But it seemed that the professors of the Academy had different views, and kept pairing them up together until they resolved their differences.
She had brought him more into the social circle, taken him to the boiler room and to other parties, something which he had not been entirely pleased about. He in return gave her that security that she craved. She was an outsider in her family, her sisters were considered 'normal' as in they finished school at the normal age and weren't finishing their first Ph.D. at 14. Her family loved her, they supported her, but they didn't really understand her.
Fitz did.
Fitz knew what she was going through, he was an outside too, and he was considered a know-it-all in his family. They didn't really understand him.
Fitz brought the security that she needed.
But him thinking that she didn't need him, that she didn't want him as a friend.
She needed him more than anything and while she knew he was full of insecurities, he hadn't had the best family environment to go up in, him thinking he wasn't good enough to be her friend was a complete turn of events.
Fitz, sweet, lovable Fitz, that made you smile with his laugh, who was a comfort on a bad day with his awkward hugs. Fitz who was perfect to snuggle with on a cold day with his above average temperature.
Fitz, the boy she loved with all heart.
She desperately wanted to kiss him, like in the hospital. She wanted to run her hands through his curls. He made her feel safe.
But the way he couldn't look at her, the way he stared at the wall in front of him. The blank expression on his face, the pain in his eyes. She wondered if she could and how he would react.
Throwing caution to the wind, she gently kissed the underside on his chin before moving onto his cheek. She kissed the side of his mouth, but he still made no move to respond. Fresh tears began flowing down her cheeks as he all but rejected her.
She moved to pull away, move out of his arms when his hand came to cup her cheek, pulling her face towards him. Jemma allowed him as he applied slightly more pressure to raise her eyes to his. She could see pain in his eyes; the same expression that she knew would be mirrored in her own. He gently kissed her lips, not passionate, sweet with slight pressure allowing for comfort, not heat.
He broke of and rested his cheek against hers "I'm sorry"
"I will never not need you Leo, I will always need you" said Jemma turning to look into his eyes "You are me and I am you, there's nothing you can do about that, you are stuck with me for forever, and I'm stuck with you" she gently entwined her hand in his "If I'm in trouble or if I need help then I call you, if I'm sick or unwell I'll call you, if I need help on a problem I'll call you, if ever need a film plot or movie explained to me, who do you think I'm going to ask? It'll be you, now and forever"
She gently kissed his lips "It'll always be you, it will be you forever"
"I love you," she said
Fitz leant down and kissed her "I love you too Jemma Elizabeth, I will love you forever and forever" he kissed her again "It was me being stupid, me being the insecure person I am, and I'm sorry"
"You are not insecure, you are you, and you will always be you" said Jemma resting her forehead on his "I don't want you to be Ward, I don't want you to be Coulson, not Mike Patterson, not anyone I want you to be you, I love you the way you are as cheesy as that sounds. You are the person I love and you can't change anything about that, you are the person that keeps me going and I'm the person that keeps you going. We need each other and if you ever run away again, I will personally kill you" she stared at their entwined hands "I can't live without you, the latest episode has proved that. And I don't ever want to" she gently shoved his shoulder "And never ever say that you are not needed by the team, Skye, May, Coulson and Ward would all be dead, time and time again without you."
"You are needed, you will always be needed whether it be me or anyone else, you are special you are you and I love you"
