Ω Chapter X - Can't be Real Ω

.
A sudden hard nudge, causes me jump awake. Failing my arm I feel myself fall backwards. I manage to get my hands behind me to catch myself. Pushing myself back up, I stretch my arms behind me as a yawn overtakes me. Shaking the yawn and grogginess out of my head. I reopen my eye, and let it focus at the landscape in front of me.
A barren battled scarred skyline of a city that looks oddly familiar is laid out in front of me. Rubbing my eye, I look again at the battle torn city. Slowly I force myself to my feet, my eye never leaving the ruins. Slowly I look around, getting the full view of what it left of the city that is stretching out before me.
From what I see, I'm in a field laying some distance from the city, but I still can make out building missing walls, and roofs. Others fallen on top of their neighbors, with Fires burning uncontrollably with in them. A loud boom pulls my gaze skyward. As I look up into the dark, ominous clouds. I see a large glowing object falling from through the clouds. I take a few steps closer as it nears breaking through the cloud bank.
My feel my heart stop with fear as the glowing object breaks through the clouds. Allowing me to see the dark unmistakable squid shape of a Reaper. It lands in the middle of the city sending a shock-wave out from the impact crater. I watch as a cloud of debris rises up from where it hit. Seconds before I'm hit with the shock-wave. I stumble to my knees from the wind and the tremor that quickly follows.
"What the fuck?"
I watch from where I fell as the giant Reaper start to destroy more of the city. The sound of softer booms draws my eyes skyward once more. As more glowing fire balls fall through the clouds. Slowly pushing myself off the ground, I notice that the new reapers are smaller than the first, but still just as destructive as the larger one.
A sudden snort, and a blast of hot moist air on the back of my neck. Causes my skin to go cold as my whole body tenses. Fear grips my throat as I know that it was not the wind. Another gust of hot air blows against my skin while I'm slowly turning around. My mind reeling with different ideas of what it could be.
I quickly stumble backwards when I come nose to nose with a massive black horse. My heel trips on something behind me, causing me to fall backwards. My eye never leaving the massive creature that is in standing front of me. I watch in fear and wonder, as the horse paws at the ground impatiently and shakes its head. My gaze moves from its large head, and glowing red eyes. To its muscular neck imbued with glowing red archaic symbols. I stare at the symbols as the horse bobs it head. Before a flash behind me, illuminates the metal of a large barbaric looking gauntlet.
My breath gets stuck in my throat as my eye travels from the gauntlet up to the owner. I quickly try to crawl backwards away from the pair of glowing white eyes, which are angrily staring down at me. I continue to back away from the dark figure who has not taken its eyes off of me. Until my shoulder press up against something. I'm about to take a deep breath in relief as the distance between the horseman and myself has grown. Until I feel whatever I'm pressed against quiver slightly. The idea that I'm against a tree shatters in my mind.
Feeling one of the things I'm against move, I slowly tilt my head back until I see the head of a sickly white horse tilted looking down at me. Now even more scared and confused. I scramble off the ground and away from this new horse. I turn when I think I have put enough distance between each other. Although I still know exactly who these two riders are. No distance will be great enough if they want to kill me.
"Are you sure about him, brother?" The one who I know as War says.
"Death is always sure, unfortunately, this is not his time. So here I'm not." The dark figure on the slickly white horse says as it walks from where I met it.
Over next to its darker kin. Off to the side of them I watch as sky lit up with explosions and tracer fire as the battle rages. So my surprise the sound is quite muffled. Only the largest explosions make enough sound to be considered an explosion.
"I see you still know who we are." Death says in the gruff voice that I know so well from the game.
I nod at them, still too scared at what reason why I'm standing in the presence of two of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
"Where are we?" I ask, finally finding my voice.
"The weak one speaks." War comments in his deep voice. Matching exactly what I remember from the game.
"Look behind you." He says, rising right hand. This had a much smaller gauntlet on it.
Slowly I turn and look behind me. I feel my heart drop in to my stomach as I see the iconic clock tower of Big Ben burning as a fire rages uncontrollably within.
"Oh shit its London." I breathe as I watch a red beam from the giant reaper blast a hole through the tower causing it to collapse in on itself.
"See brothers he does remember." A new voice says from behind me. A female one at that,
"Yes, but how much." War comments, back to the new voice.
Carefully I glance over my shoulder, to see who else is here with us. My jaw drops as I watch two other riders slowly walk in to our little gathering.
I stand frozen with fear at what I see before me. The leaders' horse slowly walked past me. The horse's yellow eyes never looking at me once. Its rider, quickly glances down at me. When her face is lit up by a distance explosive. She has an angelic, devilish look about her. She smiles when she see me looking up at her and winks with her glowing yellow eyes. Before turn her eyes to the two in front of her. I'm forced back as her horse brushes past me.
I'm started by a loud short behind me. Spinning, I come face to face with the last rider's horse. Its sliver shining with the reflections from the battle that is raging. I stare briefly in to its bright white eyes before side stepping out of its way. I watch light shine through gaps in its skin that opens and closes as the house moved past. Looking up at this rider I notice him looking down at me. Unlike the rest he holds my gaze longer with his blue eyes. A brilliant flash suddenly shows me that he dawns a metallic mask. He gives me a small nod, before snapping his rains, and joining his kin.
I stand there watching the as the last horsemen joins the others. My mind spinning at full at what I see before me. Why am I here at the battle of London with the Four Horsemen of the apocalypse?
Wait where is Maia?
I glance around for my missing friend, but all I find is a desolate wasteland. The ground scorched and pitted with craters. What trees that are left standing are stripped of their leaves and bark. The naked wood underneath brunt from a fire that's long past.
This can't be real.
"Enjoying the fruits of your labor?" Death says, snapping my full attention to him.
"What? I'm not doing this" I say waving at the Reaper laying waste to the city to the side of me. The sounds of explosions, and screams although muffled. They still reach my ears
"True...but you helped ensure the destruction of the galaxy." He says pointing at me
"Bullshit." I counter.
"The balance has tipped to their favor... Because of you." War says, glaring harder at me.
"So...you are blaming me for something I had no control over." I snap back.
"It does not change the fact. They now have the upper hand, and it is you're doing." He says leaning back in his saddle.
"So the question is this. What are you going to do about it?" The one I think is called Fury says softly, waving her hand at me.
"Nothing... None of this is real. Not you or that." I yell pointing to the Reaper that is now facing us.
"And why is this not real?" The one I know is called. Strife says, tilting his head at his own question.
"It just isn't… it just can't be real" I say my voice dropping as the small flame of doubt grows in my mind.
"See I told you that this was a waste of time." War says, anger dripping from his words as he quickly snaps his reins. Causing his horse rear up and gallops off. Leaving fiery foot prints in his wake.
"And if this is real? What will be your answer?" Fury asks.
"To want question?" I ask my eyes still on the ground. As the doubt in my mind grows with every word. I know the Reapers have an idea what is to some, the G-man said so. But can it change that much that they will now win?
"What are you going to do?" Fury says. The tone her voice pulls me from my thoughts and I look up at her. Although I can't see her face. Her yellow eyes are radiated the feeling of worry from them. As if she already knew my answer.
"Nothing. 'Cause this is not real" I say. Even though I truly don't believe my own words. Closing my eye tightly I fight to breathe as I feel my chest tighten. Somehow I feel ashamed at my answer but it's the truth.
"Why? That is if this is true" Strife's metallic voice says cutting through the dark thoughts in my mind.
"I'm afraid." I say softly, lifting my head slightly. There are so many reasons why, but it all boils down to that simple word. Loss
"And if it was true." I mumble, lifting my head up the rest of the way, and opening my eye to look at the last three horsemen. "I'm not in the best position for people to believe me. Being convicted for murder makes that a little hard."
"So be it." Death says, looking down at me with his orange eyes. Before pulling on his reins, and causing his horse to walk off in the same direction that War went, green wisps that almost looked like souls following him as he goes.
I cast my eye down to the ground when I look at Fury, and see disappointment in her eyes. I feel bad enough I don't want to feel worse. By being guilt tripped by a figment of my imagination. I look up in time to see her ride off after her two brothers. A yellow cloud following her as she goes. I also notice that Strife is already gone.
"Guess he already knew." I mumble to myself.
"Who knows what?" He says from behind me, causing me to jump, and fall on the ground. I try to crawl away from the voice that is behind me.
"So what do I know?" He says after I stop crawling.
"That I'm a disappointment." I mumble as I get myself to a sitting position
"Why" He asks. Tilting his head to the left
"That I'm afraid." I say shrugging.
"You are human it is your nature to be afraid." He says snapping his rains lightly causing his horse to slowly walk in a circle around me.
"So you are ok with me not wanting to help?" I say, looking up at him as he slowly ride his metallic horse
"No. The balance must be restored." He says harshly. Stopping his horse in front of me
"Balance? What balance? The Reapers have been doing this for I don't even know how long." I comment. Furrowing my brow at his comment
"Every cycle had brought the end of the Reapers closer. Until now that is."
"But... Shepard's going to stop them."
"Are you sure?" He asks, leaning on his horse's neck.
"Well...yea it's Shepard. It don't matter what they do. She'll find a way." I comment giving him a nervous smile.
"Are you sure?" He says, tilting his head to the left again.
"I…" My voice stalls in my throat. I want to believe that everything will turn out just like the games, but this is not a game. It is not scripted.
"That I what I thought." He says harshly. Sitting up quickly, and snapping his rains, causing his horse to rear up. Causing me to crawl backwards farther. When the horse lands he stares at me. I start to sweat from the guilt that I feel rising from deep within. Shaking his head, he pulls on his rains causing his horse to turn.
"They will come, and the galaxy will burn." He yells snapping his reins causing his horse break out into a gallop. Sparks igniting the dry grass with every impact from the horses hoofs.
I watch him as he rides off into the distance after his three kin. Giving in to the flood of emotions that I have been holding in. I fall flat on to my back.
"This has to be a dream. I mean what the horseman has anything to do with this." I say softly to myself.
"Hell I don't even remember the last game anymore. Other than the ending being crap." I mumble lifting my head, and looking at the battle torn city for a few moments before dropping my head back down.
I try with no success to push back the rising fear and grief that is slowly tightening its grip around my chest.
"I didn't want any of this. I just want to be left alone." I say my voice cracking under the stress. I want to help, but what am I going to do? Find Shepard and beg her to let me join her?
"Yeah like that's going to work." I say, choking back a few tears.
Suddenly a bright red light blinds me through my eye lid. Holding up my hand, and squinting into the light. I feel the blood drain out of my face. When I faintly make out the large dark outline of a Reaper standing over me. I try to sit up, but something was holding me down, forcing me to stare up in to the red light.
I can feel my skin on my arms and face. Start to sting as the intensity of the beam increases. I cover the rest of my face the best I can with my other arm. I again try to sit up as the smell of burning hair reached my nose, but the unseen force holds me tight. I let out a scream of pain as a blast of energy slams into me, causing my skin to split from the heat. I continue to scream as I feel the skin that is exposed to the light go numb and the pain moves to unaffected skin as the air around me heats up. I strain to breathe as the air burns my throat.
I watch the light around me change from the bright red to a deep blood red color. Suddenly something slams into me causing my mind go blank for a moment. I scream as my body mind explodes in pain. I involuntary jerk my head back as my body spasms in response to the pain.
Slamming it to something hard.
I grunt as a new pain works its way through the other pain. Opening my eye to the light again. I'm instantly blinded by a white light. Changing and shutting my eye to the painful light. I wait for the spot in my vision to fade. Slowly I open my eye again to the rays of the sun peeking through the aqua-purple leaves. Raising my hand to block the sun. I look out at the yellow-brown sea that is stretched before me.
"Holy fuck…." I say between breaths.
Slowly I let my head fall back against the cool tree. I quickly wipe the sweat of my face as I feel it run down into my eye. I try to bring myself to move, but my body is too exhausted. I have never had a dream drain me of all my strength. Then again I have never had a dream that intense before.
I brush up against something as I try to move my left hand. Confused, I open my eye slightly and smile when I see Maia laying her head on my lap. Weakly I move my hand to her head and start playing with her golden hair. My smile grows when I feel a moan lightly vibrate through my leg. I watch as she moves her head to my touch. I can feel the tension that the dream has caused me, melt away as I sit there watch Maia sleep on my lap.
Letting out a slow breath, I lean my head back against the tree and look up at the aqua-purple leaves. If things were not so bleak right now, I would have to say that this is the most peaceful moment I have experienced in a long time.
"What the fuck was that about?" I softly ask myself as I watch the leaves sway in the light breeze. Knowing that I could very well receive an answer, but that might be very useful right now.
I sit there expecting to hear from Selina, but to my surprise the only answer I hear is the light rustle of leaves in the wind. A part of me cannot help but to be worried that she has not made an appearance. I chuckle lightly at the realization that I have grown accustomed to having to hear her, and that a part of me wants her to appear. A slight shiver goes down my back as the feeling of her kissing me enters my mind.
I shake off the shiver as I process the possible reasons why she can make me feel her. My heart starts to beat faster as the only thing that makes any sense, is the only one I that fear the most.
She had control of me again, or almost. I have not had her take control of my motor functions yet, but if she can make her real to me. I don't know what else she can do, and here I thought just dealing with her in my mind was hell.
Again life had proved me wrong.
"And if things weren't bad enough" I mumble. My head starts to throbb from all the thinking. Dealing with Selina is bad, but now I have my dreams or something trying to guilt trip me into helping Shepard.
"Yea that's got to be it. My conscience is trying to make me want to help or something." I say to myself as I continue to run my fingers through Maia hair.
"I don't know...maybe I'll try." I say taking a deep breath and slowly letting it out. Trying my best to calm my nerves and mind.
"Yea like anyone will believe some random person. Most likely they will lock my ass away again. For being crazy. "I laugh. Knowing exactly what will happen to me if I do that.
"Ahh. Whatever. It is not like what I know even matters now, anyways." I say, closing my eye as I feel the exhaustion of my dream start to pull me under again.
"I just want to be left alone." I mumble as my mind starts to drift to days long past.
#######
I shake my head when a yawn helps pull my mind out of the slumber that I had fallen into. I try to rub my eye with my hand when I realize that I can't move either of my arms. Groggily opening my eye, I'm greeted by a blond head of hair right below my chin. I stare at the blond mess for a few moments. Letting my mind slowly process what my eye is seeing, and the fact that I can't move.
Moving my head to the left I strain to get a better view of this person that is holding me down. I smile when I see Mara with her eyes closed, and a smile on her lips. Looking down her chest, I see that she is seated in between my legs. With my arms intertwined with hers.
Well that would explain why I can't move.
I squeeze her tightly in the best hug that I can do, in the position I'm in. I feel her squirming slightly in under my embrace. Loosening my hold, I continue looking at her as she slowly wakes. I smile before lifting my head up, it is not easy looking at someone like that with one eye.
"Goeie môre bokkie." She says as she pulls my arm tight.
I can't help, but to chuckle at what she said. Again I don't know what she said, but I have a good idea on what it was.
"Morning Hun." I counter, kissing her head. "Any idea how long we were out?"
"Nee. You?"
"Nope." I replied, looking out at the endless sea of yellow brown foliage. I start to feel that nagging feeling in the back of my mind again. I lightly chew my cheek as the feeling starts to grow.
"Do we still have graze?"
"Graze." I ask, looking down at her blankly as she shakes her head. My eye widened in surprise when I realized what she meant.
"Oh...Food. Yea we still have some." I say, sitting up. To my surprise and disappointment. She quickly lets go of my arms, and jumps out from in between my legs. I reach to my right, pulling the bag that I'm sitting on out from under me, and toss it at Maia, who eagerly opens it.
I can't help, but to smile as she starts pulling out the contents of the bag and dropping them on the ground. My eyes start to lose their focus as thoughts of my dream enter the front of my mind. I still can't believe that my conscience would go to that extreme to makes its opinions known.
I have never had a problem with my conscience before. Even stealing all the stuff from all the different stores, and people's cars. I would have thought I would have dealt with it before, but then again maybe this is its way to make me repay for what I have done. A sudden movement snaps my focus back to the blonde girl sitting crossed legs across from me.
"What?" I ask, looking in to her eyes.
"Here." she says, throwing a tube at me, which I catch easily. "Are you ok? You seemed lost there for a second."
"Yea... I'm fine." I comments shrugging. Looking down at the tube in my hand.
"Befok?" she asks. The realization that I didn't know what she just said, causes me to look up. I see that she is staring at me with a questioning look on her face. I instantly know what she said.
"Guess I'm easy to read. Huh?" i say, giving her a weak smile.
"Ja."
"I'm…I'm just trying to understand a bad dream, that's all."
"What was it about?" she asks, opening her tube.
I look at her as she slowly squeezes the contents of the tube in to her mouth. The look on her face has softens, but she still does not look conceived.
"People dying." I breathe, as my gaze drops to the ground in between us. "And it is my entire fault." I close my eye as I my chest tighten at my words.
Is it wrong not wanting to do something that will most likely take everything thing away?
"Eric." She says, placing a hand lightly on mine. "It's probably the just the stress of what we went through. It's that or maybe you are reliving what Selina made you do?" Her words pull me from my thoughts looking up I lock my eye on hers. Slowly I feel the tightness in my chest disappear, and a smile come to my face.
"Yea you're probably right." I whisper, giving her fingers that wrapped around my hand a squeeze.
"Ja. I know I am." I says smugly. Pulling her hand away, and returning back to her half-filled tube.
Shaking my head chuckling. I open the tube and start squeezing the bitter contents in to my mouth. She probably is right, and if not there is no point thinking about it right now. We still need to find civilization.
"Eric?" Maia asks, causing me to look at her as I squeeze a little more of the paste in to my mouth.
"Mmm?" I mumble with a mouthful of bitter tasting paste.
"How did Dr. S find you?" She asks, opening the canteen, and taking a long swig of the water inside.
"He…." I start to say before finishing swallowing my paste. "He heard that they caught the butcher of Illium, and had some agents pick me up. They had me on a different station before bringing me to him"
"What other station?" She quickly asks
"Don't remember." I comment shrugging
"So that's was it?" She asks, somewhat disappointed.
"Sorry to disappoint, but that's all I was told". I replied with a half-smile.
"I see…" She says dropping her head slightly.
"What about you Maia? How did D-?" I start to ask before I see her face darkens, and instantly I regret asking.
"Maia Im..."
"It's fine. I guess it is only fair to tell you...right." She says, slowly bringing her eyes to mine. I can see that they are starting to water. Not wanting to watch her cry. I quickly move everything that is lying between us. Once that is cleared, I reach forward and grab her arms. Before she can say anything I pull her to me.
She lands on me somewhat awkwardly, but it is not hard for me to move her to how I want to hold her. Soon she is sitting with her back on my chest and my arms wrapped around her. I have never been good with words, but I think holding her, tells her all that she needs to know.
"Dankie bokkie." She says in a quite shaky voice. I feel her pull my arms tighter, so I tighten my hold on her. I hear her sigh lightly after a few minutes. Closing my eye I rest my head lightly on hers. At this point I really don't care if she answers my question or not.
"I ran." She says, shifting her head. Lifting my head quickly I allow her to move, but all she does is get more comfortable. "I worked my way to the city of Scott."
"Scott?"
"I know, I always thought it was a doff name." She says laughing slightly
"Can't disagree." I reply, nodding slightly
"Well when I got there, I did almost anything to survive, begging, stealing. Even running drugs for some small time dealers." She says, dropping her voice to a whisper. "I even had a few run-ins with the 10th Street Reds, but I was always able to get away."
"The Reds where there. I thought they stayed on Earth?" I ask. Odd that I would remember that from the game.
"Nee. Where there is a decent human population they find their way there. Anyways, it does not take long before they take interest in me."
"So you joined them?"
"Ja. It was not like they gave me a choice." She says shrugging
"Oh."
"It really wasn't that bad, it was kinda nice at first. They were a family. Yes they did bad things, but they looked out for their own. God, it was so nice to feel like you belong. You know." She says, letting out a soft sigh. I nod in agreement, I know all too well about wanting to belong.
I'm startled when I feel her pull away and out of my embrace, until she was sitting up straight with her back facing me. Confused, I place my hand on her shoulder only to have her shrug it off.
"Maia?" I ask, leaning forward to embrace her again, but something about the way she was sitting. Causes me stop.
"All good things come to an end right. Is that what they say?" She asks, turning her head to the left slightly. The hurt in her voice pulls at my heart strings, but I remain still.
"Yea that's what they say."
"Well it's true. It does come to an end. Kanji the second in command, I guess that what you call him. He ended up taking over. I never did learn what happened to McCabe, but with Kanji in charge everything changed." She says, again her voice dropping so low that I had to lean forward just to hear her. I go to put my hand back on her shoulders to show her my support, but when my fingers touch her. She pulls away abruptly and places a few feet between us.
I jump a little at her sudden movement. I fight the sudden urge to pull her back, when I see her shaking. More worried than confused. I shoot myself closer, but I keep about a foot between us. I don't like how she that she pulled away from me likes this. This is very similar to when happened in the shuttle. So better off let her let it all out.
"Maia, look you don't have to continue if you don't want to." I whisper. It is really tearing me up inside that my question is what started all of this. Slowly I watch as she lifts her head to look at me. I have to bit my lip to keep myself from bursting out into tears. Her eyes show so much pain. I close my eye to help fight the stinging feel that is growing behind my eye. As I watch a few wet streaks run down her cheeks.
"He made us do things. Things that we never did before, and if you did not go along with it. You were made an example of. He would beat you within an inch of your life. Right in front of everyone. To show us all who was in charge. We went from being a simple gang. To a crime organization. We were no longer fighting with some of the other gangs, dealing drugs, shaking up people who come in to our turf." She quickly stammers. Her fists were clenched so tightly that her knuckles were white as snow.
"He were taking over and killing other gangs. Making people and business pay us for protection. He even had hoer houses around." She says, I can see a faint blue glow slowly grow around her. As the pain and anger flash in her eyes. Slowly I reach out, and grab one of her hands. Instantly she tries to pull away, but I tighten my grip. She slowly looks down at our hands; tentatively she tightened her grip on mine.
"He...He made me does things Eric. I know that I'm no angel, but I never wanted to hurt people. Not the way he made me." She says softly.
Carefully I move closer. Until I was sitting with my legs touching her. I don't know how long we sat there. Hearing and seeing her crying, all I want to do was to hold her, to tell her that it will be all ok. Slowly her cries die down a little, slowly she lifted her head to look at me. Her blue eyes showing so much pain, but there is something behind all of that. Almost like a hidden strength.
"Kanji made me shove nails into a woman's eyes Eric… in her eyes." She suddenly yells. Pulling her hand out of mine and looking away. "And…" She starts to say, but as quickly as the anger came it is gone again. My mind starts to work overtime thinking of the possibilities that she is about to say. A void forms in the pit of my stomach when she looks up at me. I knew then what she was going to say.
"And...He forced himself on you didn't he?" I ask softly. Placing my hand on her knee. I feel she flinch at my touch, but she does not pull away. Slowly she nods in agreement to what I said.
"It went on for...I don't even know, until he gets the bright idea to hit the biggest bank in the city. Scott is not a small city mind you. I know that is a bad idea, and I even had the dumb idea to say so. He gave me his answer in the form of a black eye." She says, giving in to her body's weakness, and leaning forward to rest her head on my shoulder. I hold her gently as a few random sobs make their way out of her, but for the most part she seems to be all cried out.
"So he took a handful of us to knock over the bank." She mutters into my shoulder
"Just a few?"
"Ja. He thought that a smaller team would be quicker, and with the biotic covering them. What could go wrong? Right?" She says, looking at her hands
"Let me guess. Everything?" I ask.
"Ja."
"Where were you during all of this?" I ask, pulling back so I can look down at her.
"Holding off the cops. Where else would a biotic be?" Say mumbles with her head still down.
"Wait I thought you needed an amp to control your biotic?" I ask slowly lifting her head so I can look at her directly.
"Kanji had some hack job doctor put one into me. And let me tell you what it was the cheapest thing you could find. The damn thing would overload all the time. It even knocked me out a few times when it overloaded." She says quickly with anger in her voice.
"I can see where this is going. It overloaded on you when you were holding the police back didn't it?"
"Ja, and it knocked me out too. I was in the middle of a lift when the damn thing went. The next thing I know I woke up in jail." She says, quickly look away from me.
"What did you do?"
"I freaked out of course. I was 18, killed her parents and was part of a bank heist. What would you think I would do?" She snaps slightly. Giving me a hard look.
"Point." I say; giving her a hurtful smile
"Point?" She asks, giving me a confused look.
"Yea. Point. As in I see your point." I comment with a smile
"Oh." She says her face softening.
"So you were in jail?" I say, brushing her some of her hair out of her face.
"Yea...that... Well like I said I freaked out. Somehow it triggered another flare up or whatever. Then next thing I know. I'm standing in what was left of a conference room or something. There was a table and chairs all over the place, sheets of paper floating through the air, and the body of two cops." She says her voice dropping to a whisper.
"Oh..."
"Ja...they ended up to being ok other than broken bones, but I did not know that at the time. So seeing that just made it worse. I continued to freaking, out screaming, crying. Every time a cop came close I ended up throwing them across the room, through the window or into the ceiling. I don't know how I was doing It." She says. The hurt showing in her face as the memory plays out in her head
"The next cop was different. She was an Asari. She walked in completely unfazed by the destruction that I caused. She said that all she wanted to do was to help me, but I didn't listen. I manage to do a throw at her" She comments, pulling away slightly
"Then what happened?" I ask, tilting my head. I know that it is bad that she went through all of this, but a part of me is enjoying hearing about her past.
"What do you think she did? She dodged it of course. The next thing I know I can't move. That bitch had a stasis on me. I watched helplessly as she walked up to me and gave me a sedative. The funny thing is that she looked genuinely concerned about me when she injected me." She says. Her face softening to a slight smile
"Well that explains how they restrained you, but where does Dr. Sauiole fit into all of this?"
"I'm getting to that." She says, lightly pushing me away. I can tell from the way she pushed that there was no hate behind it, that is was more playful than anything. I give her a small nod as a smile comes to my face. "Anyways I woke up completely restrain this time, but that Asari, Saslir, was waiting for me to wake up the whole time."
"Really?" I quickly comment. Surprise from what I heard.
"Yea. She told me that she know who I am. And that they found my parents. At that point I broke down. I told her everything, what I think happened at home, how I went on the run, and ended up with the 10th street Reds. Even Kanji and the bank heist. I don't know if she understood it all through the crying though." She mumbles as she takes a drink of water from the canteen.
"After I was done she just sat there, not saying anything. After a few moments she told that she believed me. That I did not mean to kill my parents, and why I ended up with the Reds."
"Well that's cool. To have someone on your side."
"Ja…." She says. Her face growing dark. "Again it did not last long though. The chief wanted to have this help organization come in and evaluate me. Saslir didn't trust them, but the chief was not listening to her. So they came in evaluated me. Apparently they like what they found. Next thing I know I'm injected with something, and I wake up on Acheron."
"So that help group was a front for Cerberus. So they can get more subjects." I say as my mind starts to deduce its own answers.
"Ja. They were." She comments nodding.
"Wait...you said that you were 18. Right?" I ask as a thought come to me
"Ja..." She says suspiciously.
"And how old are you now?" I ask looking at her puzzledly.
"You know that it's rude to ask a lady her age." She says with fake surprise.
"Maia" I comments back with a smirk.
"Twenty seven." She says quietly.
"You were in there for nine years." I breathe as I overcome the shock of how long she was in there.
"Ja" she replies nodding slightly.
"Holy shit." I say, running my hand over my mouth as I think about what that just opened. Again the simplest answers open the most doors. "You really don't act like that you were there for that long."
"How am I supposed to act like?" She asks, shooting me a puzzled look.
"I don't know...meaner, badass, not so trusting." I answer shrugging.
"Well I was isolated for most of the time. And I'm not very trusting."
"But..." I start to say before she quiets me with her finger on my lips.
"The fact that you pointed out that you could do anything you wanted to me in the locker room, but didn't and then you helped me at your expense. Made me trust you, it kinda just went from there." She says, slowly brushing her finger down my lips, and chin. Sending my mind into the clouds. "What about you?"
"About what?" I ask, shaking my head clear of the floatiness.
"How long where you there you dummy." She says laughing, shaking her head.
"Umm… over a year I think. I really don't know. I could never keep track of time in there. In the end there was no point to care about the time, when there is nothing left to hold on to."
"What about your family?"
I stare at the ground as images of my mom, dad, sister, and even Kersti flash through my mind. Somehow I still find the strength to nod my head yes. I close my eye as I feel it start to water slightly at the thought of my dad and his toothless grin.
"All I have left are a few memories of them." I choke
"Can you tell me about them?" She asks with a little too much enthusiastic for my taste.
"Why?" I ask, looking up and giving her a questioning look.
"Can't a girl want to know the reason her hero is the way he is" She says interlacing her fingers with mine. Her comment, and gesture bring a smile to my face.
"Ok...They were nothing special, but I guess that's what made them so great. My mother, Sarah was very soft spoken, very beautiful, a great cook, and always showing that she cares. My father..." I say before stopping.
I laugh slightly at the memory of what father taught me. How to be the best I could, and to always do what I thought was right, no matter what others thoughts.
"My father, Jim, He's the one who you should thank. He's always tried to distill good manners, and to be the better man in me. Don't get me wrong my mom had a good part, but I always looked up to my dad. I wanted to be just like him. A good man, great sense of morals, and direction. Always doing what needed to be done no matter what. That is who I wanted to be." I say, before taking a deep breath.
"I don't think I did a good job liste-"
"Eric." She says softly cutting me off mid-sentence. "I can say from personal experience, that you have all that, and more."
I turn my head away slightly as I feel my cheeks start to burn, and a smile comes to my face. Just hearing her say that makes the painful retelling of my memories worth it. "Thanks" I mutter as I look back at her slightly. Still slightly embarrassed that she made me blush.
"Did you have brother, sisters?" She says smiling as she lightly bounces in her spot.
"Yea an older sister, Kayla. Well she was just a big pain in the ass. But I still loved her. She was always there for me. Whenever I needed help that just didn't feel right asking mom or dad. I could just go ask her." I answer. My embarrassment finally disappearing. I look back at Maia, and see that she has a small frown on her face.
"Oh shit. I'm sorry Maia. I didn't mean to…"
"No...Eric" She says quickly cutting me off. "It's ok. I just never had anyone tell me about their family like that. Most people I talked to didn't have any or just hated them. So thank you for telling me all that."
"No problem. I know that there is more, I just can't remember it." I comment, smiling. It does feel good to talk about them. Like if I talk about them I will keep their memory alive.
"Funny I thought it would have hurt more thinking about them. It doesn't really hurt that much now when I think of Kersti." I say, looking past Maia to the yellow brown plain behind her.
"Who's Kersti?" She quickly asks. Leaning back quickly.
"Umm…"I say. The blood in my veins turning cold.
"Eric." She growls.
"She was my wife." I whisper, looking away from her reaction.
"What!" She yells, pushing me away. "You're married!"
I catch myself from falling backwards as I watch her start up, and glared down at me. A part of me feels slightly guilty for not telling her sooner, but we really didn't have the time. Anyways the fact that I was marred doesn't matter anymore. I'm never going to see her or home again.
"Well what do you have to say, you were playing me this whole time, and you're married. How could I be so doff"
"Was."
"Was, what?" She snaps.
"Married" I say breathe looking up to her. I hold her gaze as I wait for what I just said to sink in. When it finally does, I look away so I don't see the pity that is most likely be in her eyes.
"What hap-" She stammers softly.
"She's dead." I comment quickly cutting her off. "They all are." I take a deep breath before looking up at her. I notice that the blood has drained from her face. She quickly drops to her knees.
"What hap-. I mean how they died." She stammers. A part of me likes the fact that she is now acting like this, but a part is confused on why. She has no one, so why does it matter that I don't either?
"I don't know. That part I can't remember. I just know that everyone is dead and gone." I breathe, sitting up straight again. I let my eyes fall back to the ground again. I know that it is not the truth. Well I really don't know. If they are still alive or if they really are dead. Due to me really being over hundred years in the future.
"Eric. Ek is jammer. I...I didn't know." She says, placing her hand on my cheek softly. "I should have not acted like that... God I'm so jammer."
"Don't be. You have no way of knowing. Anyways I have had a lot of time to move past it. I guess it is different talking to someone about it, then just thinking about it." I say, shrugging
"I know." She whispers.
"Thanks."
"For what?" She asks tilting her head, mimicking what I do.
"For listening to me. It doesn't hurt as much as I thought it would be talking about it." I answer.
"It's the least I could do. You did after all. Save me, care for me, and listen to me. So it was my turn to help you." She says softly, cupping her hand under my chin and lifting my head.
I still have my eye close, as I fight the pain in my heart. When I feel a light warm breath on my lips followed by a light touch from a pair of lips. Slowly the pressure increases. Causing my breath to get caught in my throat. I feel my whole body go limp. When she slowly pulls away. I have to quickly catch myself as I fall forward.
I open my eye as I catch my breath. Pushing myself up, I look at her, I notice that her cheeks are slightly pink. Seeing that cause me to notice that my face feels very warm.
Damn one simple kiss and I feel like this.
"Jammer." She says, giving me a half smile.
"Don't." I start to say between breaths, smiling. "Be."
This causes her smile to grow. I close my eye as I get my breathing under control, and to help push my memories of my past away. There really is no point to dwell on the past. When I have a very good start of a future, sitting in front of me.
"Here."
Opening my eye. I see her holding out our water canteen. Nodding, I take it and easily gulp down a few mouthfuls of water. Wiping the few drops of water off my lips with the back of my hand. I give her the canteen back.
Looking around for a second I find my half eaten tube, grimacing at the thought of the taste of the paste. Knowing I need to eat, I pick it up, and squeeze more of the bitter contents in to my mouth.
"You really don't like it do you?" She says. Her smile growing bigger
"Do you?"
"Nee, but I'm more used to it I guess." She says shrugging.
"Yeah you're probably right, still you would think after a year of eating this crap. It would not bother me this much." I say, looking at the tube with disdain.
"You think we should get going? The sun is almost down."
"Reallph?" I mumble with the last mouthful as I look up at out at the horizon. To my surprise the sun really is setting. I would have to say about an hour left of daylight is left. Normally I would say to stay and hold out for the night, but we have no food and very little water.
"Shit. Yea we need to move it." I managed to say after swallowing the last of the paste. Looking away from the setting sun, to see her nod before stand up.
"Hey what's this?" She asks. When I get myself to my feet. Giving her a quick glance I see that she is holding a metallic cylindrical looking thing, about the size of a water bottle.
"Umm… I think it's an emergency beacon or something." I mutter shrugging.
"Why the hell did you bring that?" She growls, throwing the cylinder off to the side, and out of my sight.
"Well that WAS in case that we don't find anything here. So that way we don't die out here."
"I would rather die than be captured by Cerberus." She says her voice rising.
"Ok...OK. Your right. Look I just didn't want to lose what I have found that's all." I say placing my hands on her arms.
"If you had called them...you would." She growls, looking up at me.
"You think that I would just let them take you." I counter give her a smug look.
"You wouldn't have a choice." She quickly replies glaring at me.
"I would of figure something out. Trust me I always do." I whispered leaning down, and lightly kissing her on the cheek.
She quickly pulls back, to look at me. Slowly her face softens as my words must sink in. "Jammer... I guess I should have waited before I throw It." She says. Placing her hand on my arm as I pull away.
"It's ok. How hard can it be? It's a metal tube in the middle of a dead field." I shoot back as I start walking out from under the shade of the tree. I can feel the heat on my bare arms, but it is nowhere as bad as it was earlier.
"Eric!" She yells. Causing me jump and stumble over my feet in surprise.
"What?" I yell turning, and running back to where she was standing.
"Look." She says excitedly. I follow where she was pointing. Through the heat haze the unmistakable color of green shimmers in and out of view.
"That can't be real. Can't it?" I ask hesitantly. I want to believe what I see, but I know if it is not. We will be walking to our deaths.
"It's got to be." She squeaks, grabbing my arm.
"But what about the lights we saw last night?" I comment looking down at her.
"We still don't know how far that is. Even I know that light can travel a long distance." She counters looking back at me.
"Point." I say nodding in agreement.
"So it's settled then." she says letting go, and bending down quickly, grabbing the bag. Before jogging down the small hill, and away from the tree.
"Hey don't I get a say in this." I shout.
"Nee." She yells back
"Yea that's what I thought." I mutter, shaking my head at her comments. Taking a deep breath, I look up at the canopy of aqua/purple leaves.
"Thanks" I whisper, placing my hand on the trees trunk. I know that it's just a tree, but without it. We both would be dead.
"You better go, or she going to leave you here."
"Oh shit..." I yelp from them sudden intrusion.
"Selina?" I quietly ask as I look around for her expecting to see her showing herself. Now that Maia is not around, but I see nothing.
"Selina?" I ask again somewhat worried that I'm not seeing her or hearing her.
"Umm ok then." I mutter shrugging before heading off after Maia. It's weird to think that is the reason why she is acting the way that she is, but Sherlock Holmes once said 'When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth'.
Pushing the thought to the back of my mind I run faster. When I see Maia is no longer jogging or walking, but running.
########
"Eric did you hear that." Maia says softly from behind me.
"Hear what?" I ask, whispering over my shoulder. As I make my way through the rows of green crops. I'm a lot more at ease now that we found green and growing plants right after sundown. I'm still very tempted to eat the food growing from it, it does look like a tomato, just a dark purple with white stripes running from top to bottom, but Maia reminded that it could be dextro. Too bad it is too dark now to see if the plants are the same.
"It sounded like growling."
"It probably was just me. I am hungry. Running to keep up with you took a lot out of me." I playful say back to her. I know that it was not me but I'm trying to keep her from thinking about it.
"Ja. Me too but it was worth it. When is the moon coming up anyways? I can barely see anything."
"I don't know. It should of been up by n-...Wait gives me the bag." I say, stopping in my tracks, causing her to bump into me.
"Hey watch it." She growls smacking my back with her free hand.
"Sorry." I breathe taking and opening the bag. Reaching in I quickly find what I was looking for. Dropping the bag on the ground I take the thin cylinder, and slam the bottom onto my knee. Instantly the area around is bathed in an eerie green glow as the flare ignites.
"There that's bet-" I start to say before I'm hit by some unseen force with such power that I land a good few feet where I just dropped the flare.
"Eric." Maia screams. As I shake the throbbing pain in my head from hitting the ground.
"Don't worry about me. Are you o-" I reply, getting to me feet, before freezing in my place. Standing between me and Maia is a large Varren. I could never forget the first time I saw one. I thought that it looked like one of those deep water fish with its large eyes and long fangs. Looking up I see Maia looking back at me her eyes wide with fear. Slowly I take an sidestep to make my way around the Varren.
It must have realized what I was doing. It suddenly jumps toward me driving me back a few steps. Getting my footing again, I glare at this thing that is keeping me from Maia. It then lunges again at me snapping its powerful jaws. I jump back to keep out of its jaws, but I end up on my ass. When I trip on the plants around us. I can hear my heart pound in my ears as I watch the Varren slowly back away, and then lets out a long, loud howl. I slap my hands to my ears to muffle the sound as it enters my ear.
I drop my hands as I watch the Varren closes its mouth as focus its attention on me again. I start to push myself off the ground and the plant that I'm sitting on. When I my blood turns to ice as different pitched howl reach my ears.
"What was that?" Maia stammers, whipping around as the howls grow closer.
"More of them." I growl. As I feel the fear racing through my body, but my desire to be with Maia easily overpower that feeling. Turing it into rage, that a pack of wild Varren are going to be attacking us.
A small glint in the distance catches my eye. Quickly taking my eye off of the Varren who is now pacing back and forth growling at me. I see a number of small reflections moving around in the darkness. My hand slowly drifts down to the metal shard that is in my waistband. I feel a cold sweat form over my arms. When my hand closes around empty air. The metal shard is no longer there. As my mind quickly plays back the past few hours. The fear that I tried to push away comes back in full force.
A deep, long howl causes the Varren in front of me to stop and turn around. Taking the opening I look around at my feet for my shard. I quickly spot it a few feet to my right where I first landed. As quiet as I can I make it back over to where it was laying on the ground. I wrap my left hand around the cool metal, and a smile comes to my face.
Not wasting an open invitation I move in to jump on the Varren's back. A few of the creatures' spikes cut my side and arms, when I land on its left side. It yelps in surprise as I wrap my right arm around its neck. Getting the best grip I can under the now bucking Varren I pull back with all my strength and plunge my shard into its warm skin.
Instantly I feel the warm thick blood start to drip on to my hand. Quickly it pulls its head out my right hand. I re-wrap my right hand around its neck as I start to work the metal shard in and out of its flesh. I fight the tightening grip around my heart when Its howls and whines, bring the memories of my injured dog to the surface. Pushing through the pain I finish pulling the shared across the Varren's neck.
Pushing myself off of its back I land on the ground and watch as the Varren runs a few feet before collapsing to the ground. Slowly it picks itself off the ground and stagers a few more, before falling again. This time it does not move.
I use the back of my right hand to wipe the tear from my eye. Looking up I see Maia looking back at me. The look of fear and horror in her eyes, I look away as I'm crushed with guilt. This is the second time I had to kill to protect her, and she had to watch them both.
"Eric." She says shakily. Causing me to slowly look up at her slowly. I feel the guilt lift slightly as she forces a smile for me. Giving her a half smile back I push myself to my feet. As I place weight down on my left leg. I flinch when I feel a shooting pain around my ankle. Looking down I see a large gash going down the side of my leg, and on to my foot.
"Shit. How-" I say before I hit with such force that the wind is knocked out of me. My ears instantly ringing, my back is ravaged with pain. I slam into the ground, blacking out for a few moments.
Maia's scream, pulls me back to consciousness. Pushing myself over on my back, my heart stops. When I look up in the mouth of an extremely large Varren. Who is looking down at me, drool dripping out of its open mouth, and down on to my chin.
I hear Maia scream again, snapping my head to the left I watch as two smaller Varren take turns snapping at her legs. As I watch this I see that our bag is with in arms reach and the last flare sticking out of the opening.
Hearing a low growl from the Varren standing over me. I whip my arm out and wrap my hand around the metal tube. I watch in the corner of my eye as the Varren opens its mouth wider. I gag as the rancid smell of rotting flesh hits my nose. Whipping my arm back up, I wedge the flare in between its jaw. I grab the other end of the tube with my left hand I push back with all my strength, but it is like moving a mountain.
I cringe when the Varren snarls at me, sending globs of drool over my face. Again I fight myself from gagging from it rancid breath that is coming from its mouth. I started when I hear Maia scream and a crunching sound. Followed instantly by a blood curdling scream.
"Get off of me!" Maia screams between painful cries. I whip my head to see her hitting one of the smaller small Varren that has her legs firmly in its jaws.
"Maia" I scream. Loosening consternation on i own fight. I feel the beast lunge down. I turn back in time to watch the creature snap its mouth inches from my nose. I can feel it hot breath over my face, and the stench burning my lungs.
"Eric" Maia screams. I glance to see her reaching for me. My chest tightens with fear that this is how it will end. I scream as my fear turn to anger. I push back with all my strength. Trying with all i have not to have it end like this.
Hearing a quick yelp, I turn to see that the small Varren is no longer holding on to her leg. I cringe at what I see her calf ripped, blood easily flowing from it. I feel my stomach churn when I see the white of her bone sticking out of the torn muscles.
Suddenly the monster gives a strong push, collapsing my elbows. Getting its gaping mouth inches from my face again. I feel my arms being slowly pushed into the soft dirt. I close my eye as I try to stop it from advancing but I have no strength left. Even with the adrenaline in my veins. I'm no match for this beast.
"Eric." Maia weakly calls to me. I let out a strained cry as I realize that she will have to witness me getting eaten. The hand of fear tightens it hold around my heart when I feel the hot rancid breath of the Varren on my skin.
I'm shaken out my death stricken thoughts. When I feel a breeze come over me. This must have startled the Varren also, for the weight over me lightens considerably.
"Leave..." Maia says softly through strained breaths.
"Us..." she continues her voice growing louder. As the breeze gets stronger.
"Alone!" She shouts. I open my eye as a sudden force slams into the Varren, and me. The Varren struggle to hold its ground against the wind, but it does not last long.
I scream as the Varren rake it claws across my right leg. In one last ditch effort not is blown away. It howls as it is blown into the darkness. Pushing through the pain, I look over to Maia. Who gives me a small smile before collapsing on to the ground.
"Maia." I yell. I try standing, but my right leg refuses to hold any weight. Falling to the ground, I drag myself over the ground and plants to Maia.
I reach her and quickly check her pulse. It is very weak, but I feel it. Looking down at her leg, I force myself from throwing up. It looks like ground beef, with bone and tendons sticking out of it. Ripping off my shirt, I tie it around her thigh making a quick tourniquet. In a attempt to slow the flow of blood.
"Maia, come on don't die on me now." I choke as my throat goes dry. I continue to tighten the knot as I notice the flow start to slow.
A low growl causes the hair on neck to stand. Slowly I look over my shoulder. I see in the dying green light, three pairs of eyes look back at me from the darkness. As the growling grows louder I start seeing reflections off of the Varren's fangs. I watch in horror as the massive Varren that I was struggling with emerges from the blackness. I look down at Maia's still body. Her breathing seems to have gotten stronger, but it is all.
As much as I want, there is nothing I can do to stop this beast. Not wanted to be attacked from behind. I turn completely around to face the pack. Picking up my shard with my right hand. Slowly I push myself to my feet, putting all my weight on my left leg. I ready myself for what is coming.
"Your one ugly son of a bitch." I growl, crouching, holding my shard in backward grip. "If I going to go out. I'm not going out on my knees."
I watch with some amusement as the Varren crouches low to the ground. Readying it to attack, funny that it did not attack before. Almost like it was waiting for a fight. I chuckle lightly as I watch it snap at one of the smaller ones as it take a step closer to me.
"You want me for your self don't you?" I laugh. I can't help but smile as the thrill of what is happening keeps my adrenalin flowing through my veins, keeping me on a high.
"Well they do say the closer you are to death the more you feel alive."
Oh... Now you say something.
"What would you expect me to say?"
Guess there is nothing is there?.
I cringe as my opponent lets out a loud howl causing my ears to ring. The moment the Varren stops howling it takes off running at me. The gap is closed within moments. Far faster than I would of liked. Raising my shard, I watch it as it plants its feet and lunge at me. Time seems to slow as the massive Varren flies at me with is jaws open wide, and drool dripping off its fangs.
Time snaps back to full speed when I hear a shot ring out, and blood spray out the side of the Varren's head. The force of the impact causes the Varren's body to skid to the right of us as it lands. I stand stunned, and breathing hard.
I stare at the unmoving carcass of the large Varren. Still not comprehending what just happened. I'm started when the whole area is bathed in a bright white light. Turning, I hold up my hand as shield my eye while I look for the source of the light.
I watch with mixed emotions as a figure walk toward us. The light masking who or what it is.
"Speh ka Tip'ethe?" The figure says in a synthetic voice. I quickly fall to my knee as the pain in my right leg becomes too much to bear, and the fact that there is someone who can help us. I just hope they don't shoot us first.
"What? I don't understand you." I replied tiredly raising my hand once more to block the light.
"Li Sefa. Speh ka Tip'ethe?" The figure says. This time moving closer.
"Look dude I don't know what the fuck you are saying. But you going to help us or not." I say. My patience quickly fading as the pain from my leg and my over spent muscles hits me hard.
"Tip'ethe Jhil Klipsra sefalu ka Nyalas Tip'ethe?" It says. I watch as it raises its arm ,and the light fades to a soft glow. I blink at the large white spots in my vision. As I try to get a better look at who ever this is standing in front of me.
"Look are you going to help or are you going to shoot. 'Cause if you wait a little longer you won't ha-" I say as the spots begin to fade, and I make out the first detail of my mystery savior. My words freeze in my throat when I see the stars reflecting off of its visor and two silver orbs looking out from behind them.
"Gali. Liga ha Pri'el ulhmaesh'ieel uh'lsh?" It says leveling its gun at me.
"Oh shit... your...you're a Quarian." I weakly comment as my mind goes blank. I'm seeing my favorite alien species and its pointing a gun at me.
