When Something's Broken, Fix It…
Chapter 9
By: Soniclover28
"Okay, so… I was captured by a guy named James, and he broke me. Then a… giant bear bit me and poisoned me. And then I turned into a mutant… thing… Yeah… um… Not buying it…"
"I knew he wouldn't believe us…" Chuck sighed, turning back to Tails, whose eye was twitching in annoyance.
Tails took a deep breath and tried to explain further.
"Yes, you did. And after you mutated, you went on a killing frenzy through the animal hospital. You-"
"Tails, this isn't funny anymore," Sonic interrupted, standing from his spot on the couch and giving Tails a look of warning.
"It never was funny, Sonic! I'm telling the truth! You-" Tails tried to explain.
"Tails, stop lying to m-"
"You murdered fifty-four people!" Tails burst, "Do you honestly think I would make something like this up?! Look, I'll show you!" Tails snatched the T.V. remote off of the coffee table and turned the T.V. on.
"Tails, this is ridiculous! Just drop the ac-"
"Three days ago, a wild beast frenzied through Paws and Claws Animal Hospital. Reports say that fifty-four people were killed, and one-hundred and seven people were either injured or critically injured."
Pictures of the damaged hospital flashed on the screen, as well as some photos of the people that were killed.
"A security camera was later booted up, and caught this image of what is thought to be the monstrosity that G.U.N. captured and got rid of."
A picture of a dark figure was brought onto the screen, and only a faint outline and a pair of menacing eyes were visible.
"Now, if we invert the colors and contrast it a bit…"
The picture was made a bit clearer, and what was seen was, indeed, Sonic's mutated form.
A gasp was suddenly heard from the blue hedgehog, and he took a few steps back.
"Th-that's…! B-but I thought-…!" He stuttered. He shot Tails a look of pure shock and disbelief. "I-I-…! You-you were right…! I-I… I turned into-! And-and-!" Sonic suddenly slapped his hands over his muzzle, his breathing starting to grow labored. He collapsed on his knees, staring at the T.V.
"I killed all those people…" He breathed, removing his hands from his mouth.
"Sonic…" Tails whispered, his ears flattening against his head.
"I… I killed all those people!" He burst, balling his hands into fists. "I-I-" Sonic buried his face into his hands. The pain he felt for all of those innocent peoples' families hurt too much.
The memories were all rushing back to him now. The beatings, the pain, and even who had started it in the first place.
Even who had started it…
"Ja-a-ames!"
Faster than the eye could see, Sonic bolted out of the mansion, barely remembering not to burst through the door on his way out.
With a mind clouded with anger, Sonic let loose a sonic boom and ran as hard as he could to the one place he knew James would be.
Sonic leaped over the prison fence, ignoring the cries of protest from the guards. He stopped at the steel doors, trying to compose himself before he rammed straight through them.
"Who is this?! You are trespassing! State your name and business here!" A voice boomed from the speaker beside the door.
"I'll give you three guesses…" Sonic growled. As soon as the security camera projected the image to the guard of the door, the man frantically opened the thick gates.
Sonic sulked in, ignoring the insults spat at him from numerous jailers.
"I'm here to see James."
"Last name?"
"Docks."
"Right this way."
The guard led him to a concrete room, where he sat quietly and waited for the black haired man to be brought in. Sonic took a deep breath, trying to calm his rage-flooded body before he tore the whole place down.
(Sonic's P.O.V.)
After about five minutes, a man wearing an orange uniform was escorted into the room by two other guards. They sat him down in a chair and handcuffed him to the metal table that separated us. I nodded to the guards, dismissing them, and they left the room.
There were no double glass mirrors, or any windows. There was a security camera in the corner of the room, and a single light that hung from the ceiling.
James' face was blistered and peeling, as well as his neck. His normally healthy black hair was greasy and unkempt. His relaxed nature faltered as soon as he caught the murder in my eyes, and he didn't say a word.
"James," I nodded, my voice unnaturally soft.
He nodded back, shifting uncomfortably in his chair.
"Restless?" I asked casually.
"Well, yeah. I've been living here for the past week or two."
"Ah, okay. So, what happened to your face?" I asked.
"I was interrogated by your… friend. His name was Shadow, I believe," James explained.
"Ah, okay. I understand now," I snickered.
"Stop playing around with me, hedgehog. What are you doing here?" James demanded.
"Oh, y'know, I just wanted to drop by for a visit," I waved him off, propping my feet up on the metal table. "It's been one heck of a week."
"I can see that…" James muttered.
"What was that?" I asked, even though I had heard him clearly.
"Well, you're completely healed. There's not a scratch on you," James clarified.
"James, I have a question for you."
"And what would that be?"
"Why did you do it?"
"Huh?"
I took my feet off of the table, all humor currently being shoved out of the door.
"Why did you capture me? Heck, why did you even start capturing animals and force them to fight each other?"
"That's none of your business, hedgehog…" James retorted.
"Oh, but it is," I smirked darkly. I stood up and walked behind his chair. "But hey, if you don't wanna spill it, that's fine by me."
I reached in front of him and snapped his cuffs, and he looked at me in bewilderment. He almost said something, but I abruptly wrenched his shirt and pinned him against the wall.
"I'll just beat the sense into you." I smiled malevolently, letting a shudder run through the human's spine. "Now, I wonder what happens when I poke you…mmh… here."
James screeched as I placed a finger on his burnt cheek.
"Or... here."
I jammed my thumb into his upper neck, causing him to howl in pain. I released him and took a couple steps back. I looked into James' furious eyes as he stared into the murderous look of mine.
"Let's see who's really in charge here… Master," I hissed the last word at him, and literally saw something inside of him snap.
He lunged at me in anger, but I merely sidestepped. He rammed into the wall behind me, and I kicked him into it. The result of the impact broke his nose, and he immediately whirled on me.
James threw a punch at me, but I grabbed his arm and twisted it until I heard it snap. The black haired man screamed in pain.
I know I shouldn't have, but I had enjoyed the look of horror on his face when I lifted him up by his shirt. I threw him into the other wall, and he slid down lifelessly. I stalked up to him and kneeled down before him.
"Y'know, I should really thank you," I told him darkly. "You gave me a new look on the world. You allowed me to see the things that regular heroes would never understand. But most of all," I leaned forward into his trembling face, "You taught me how hate."
"S-so what're gonna do…? Ju-just kill me already!" James started to sob, whether it was from his newfound pain or his fear I don't know.
"Oh, no, no, no! I'm not that kind of person!" I said in mock hurt, placing a hand on my chest. My dark look returned as I said, "I'm much worse."
I stood up, turned around, and headed for the door.
"S-so that's it?! Y-you're just going to walk aw-away?!" James barked.
"Yes. I'm walking away and leaving everything you put on me behind me. You're going to spend the rest of your life in prison and eventually go insane. I think that's punishment enough," I said, placing my hand on the doorknob.
"Wh-what do you mean, 'go insane?!' I'm perfectly sane!" James yelled.
"Whatever you say," I replied, rolling my eyes and turning the handle.
"You can't walk away from me! Pretty soon you'll be crawling back to me! I'll always haunt your mind, Sonic! Always!" James was screaming now, kicking his legs wildly in frustration.
I turned my head to him, staring into his cold, ice blue eyes. The same eyes that had, indeed, haunted me for some time. The same eyes that I could never forget. My glare hardened, my face darkening.
"And I'll always haunt yours."
I opened the door and slammed it shut behind me.
