Chapter 10: Luck of the Draw

*/*/*/*

The familiar sound of an arrow hitting the bark of a tree reverberated through the forest, followed closely by the faint sounds of hooves treading on the ground.

"Damn, nice shot."

Kagome gave Daryl a cocky smile as she pulled off the dead tom turkey from the bark of a tree. "Thanks, much better than that tiny Squirrel you got earlier."She said as she pointed to the small gray squirrel hanging from his hip with her bow.

Smirking at the Asian woman, Daryl shrugged his shoulders. "How was I suppose to know you were going to shoot a turkey? Have to take every chance I get at getting food."

"I'll give you that one. Your squirrel is still tiny though." She giggled lightly when he gave her a weird look.

Once her giggle fit was over, she gently urged the mare she was riding to move forward. It felt good to ride a horse again. The last time she rode one was the last month she was in the past. Sango and Miroku had given her a chestnut mare for her eighteenth birthday, looked much like the one she was riding now.

Mostly why she chose to ride her.

Shaking his head, Daryl followed after her on his own horse. Even though he wanted to go looking for Sophia alone, Kagome was very persistent about going with him. Nothing he said changed her mind.

Stubborn woman.

"Hey, do you see something down there?"

Coming out of his thoughts, he looked in the direction that Kagome was pointing. He could just make out a discoloration in the creek. "Yeah, something is down there. I'll go look. Stay here." He said as he got off his horse.

"Alright."

Making his way down towards the creek, he could slowly make out the shape of a stuffed doll. Once he picked it up, he realized that it was the one Sophia had. Surprised, he quickly looked around the area for any sign of her. "Sophia!" After a minute with no reply, she turned around and headed back towards the horses.

"Is it her?"

Looking back up the hill Kagome was staying at with the horses, he shook his head. "No, but its her doll. She has definitely been in this area recently."

Kagome nodded at him, then spread out her senses. Maybe Sophia was still close enough for her to sense her.

There, she could faintly make out the familiar presence of a human. It was weak though. Looking back at Daryl she pointed in the direction she could sense the presence. "I think she went this way, lets go." She explained as she urged her horse forward.

Following close behind her, Daryl kept checking the area for any sign of her, until his horse stopped abruptly from some scared birds. "Easy girl. Just some birds." Once the mare started walking again, he took a quick look at Kagome. She looked like she was deep in concentration, she was transfixed in this one direction.

She didn't even notice the snake in front of her horse, neither did Remy surprisingly. "Kagome, stop!"

It was too late though, he horse spotted it and reared back twice. Kagome was trying her best to try and control the animal, but it reared back again before he could grab its reins and knocked her off. "Kagome!" Daryl yelled as he jumped off his horse, trying to catch her before she rolled down into the creek. "Shit!"

He barely missed grabbing her.

He heard her grunt of pain as she landed in the shallow creek bed. As he ran down the small hill with Remy in tow towards her, he could already see blood in the water, and a lot of it. Once he was at the bottom, he could hear her yelling in Japanese, no doubt cursing up a storm.

Rushing to her side, he saw the arrow sticking out of her side. "Fuck." Cursing more, he helped her sit up. "Can you stand up."

After a moment, she was able to nod her head once. "Yeah, help me get to the sand over there, I need to get out of the water."

Wasting no time, he went to her good side and put her arm around his neck. "On three, ready?"

"Ready."

"One, two, three." He winced as she yelled out in pain, but kept moving towards the dry sand anyway. Every time she would make a sound from pain, Remy would whine. Once they got to the sandy area he leaned her back again some fallen trees, he took a better look at the arrow.

It went through about half way, then the back snapped off, probably from when she landed. Luckily the part that snapped wasn't in her side. So there was no chance of splinters in her.

"How bad is it?"

Looking at her face, he could tell she was doing all she could not to pass out. "The back snapped but its not in you, so there shouldn't be any splinters in your side. We need to slow the bleeding though, you're losing a lot of blood."

"Alright."

He pulled out his knife and went to cut the sleeve of his shirt, but he stopped when she placed a hand on his. "No need, in my bag is a first aid kit with gauze and stitching supplies."

Nodding, he looked up the hill were she fell. "Oh shit..." He hadn't realized how far she had fallen, it was at least thirty feet to the top where his horse was. The one she was on probably ran off when it reared her off.

Luckily her bag was hanging off of a dead tree only about ten feet up.

Grabbing it, he ran back to her and opened it up, pulling the first aid kit out. While he was doing it, he heard her moving around. "Hey, don't move around or yo- What are you doing!?" He hissed when he saw her taking her shirt off.

"This shirt is ruined and it will just get in the way while cleaning the wound anyway. At least I'm wearing a spots bra. So get over it." She explained as she rolled the ruined piece of clothing.

In the back of his mind, he swore he heard his brother mocking him about not being able to deal with seeing a half naked chick.

Shaking his head he pulled out the disinfectant spray, gauze, sterile needle, and sewing string from the first aid kit. Setting it on a clean towel he pulled from her bag, he looked at her. Noticing the rolled up shirt. "I've got to pull it out."

"I know, get it over with."

He took a nervous look at Remy, he didn't feel like being bit by the dog. "What about Remy? Won't he try to attack me?"

"Not unless I tell him too."

"Okay."

He waited until she put the rolled up sleeve of her shirt in her mouth. He grabbed a hold of the front of the arrow. After he mentally counted to three, he pulled it out with one quick pull. He closed his eye's are she screamed into the shirt.

Spitting the shirt out, Kagome continued to yell. "God fucking damn it, that hurts like hell!"

She would of yelled more but Daryl placed his hand over he mouth. "Shh, something is in the bushes over there." He motioned in the direction he heard a noise with his head.

Remy was tense and looking at some bushes where he heard the noise.

Forcing back another scream, she nodded her head. "We need to hurry and get me patched up."

"No arguments there." He replied before he started cleaning the wound. It went through clean, so he didn't have to worry about any pieces of wood being stuck in her side. After he cleaned it, he applied some of the disinfectant spray then started to stitch her up.

He was surprised at how well she was able to keep herself still while he worked on her. He knew she was in a lot of pain, hell, who wouldn't be, but even his brother would be twitching and yelling at him.

"Not your first time bring stitched up is it?"

"No, not the first time having an arrow in me either."

Raising an eyebrow at her, he guessed it must of happened while she was on her quest thing back in Japan. "How did that happen?" He asked while he finished stitching her up and started applying the gauze, he could faintly make out another round scar just above her hip.

"My ex-boyfriends crazy ex shot me while I was on my quest. I'll admit though, this time around it hurts a hell of a lot worse." She explained, she winced when he put a little too much pressure on the gauze when he was applying the medical tape. Good thing she brought the water proof tape with her.

"Some crazy adventure you went on."

"You have no idea."

Chuckling to himself, he put the unused items back into her first aid kit. He noticed some antibiotics and pain meds in her bag, as well as a bottle of water. Giving some to her, he watched her swallow them.

"You know, this is why I didn't want you to come along."

"Please, don't think I didn't notice your horse get spooked by those birds. It probably would of happened to you if I weren't here."

She had him there.

Shaking his head, he ran a hand through his hair. "Still though, your guard dogs aren't going to be too happy with me. Letting you get hurt and all."

She sighed then. Finally the pain was starting to dull and she could already feel herself starting to heal. She would be fully healed with in two days. Looking back at Daryl and shrugged her shoulders. "Wade understands the dangers I head into and how trouble tends to find me. Greg on the other hand... I'll have Wade and Souta hold him back in case he decides to beat the crap out of you."

Before Daryl could answer him, Remy started to growl in the direction of the bushes they heard the noises earlier.

As soon as he looked up, he saw at least three walkers coming out of the bushes and there seemed to be two more behind them making their way towards them.

Cursing to himself, he went to load a bolt into his crossbow when he realized something.

He only had two bolts with him. The others were on his horse. So him and Remy had to take out at least five walkers on their own.

Shit.
