"I was really hoping it wouldn't be this," Mako flipped through the pages of Korra's notebook.
Each page had the same drawing. It was a picture of Amon taking away her bending. Why she drew it repeatedly still boggles his mind, but at least he knew his hunch was right, unfortunately.
Mako's face went from worried to angry," I need to find Korra."
"Well, it's lunch time now, so I'm sure she'll be there," before Mako stormed off she stopped him," Wait! Won't she be mad if she found out we looked through her stuff? She won't want to listen to us after that or talk to us for that matter."
Mako tried to pull away, but she was right. Knowing Korra she'd get very angry with them and avoid them. How was he supposed to talk to her about this though? He couldn't let her stay like this. All of this made him so angry, but not at her, he was frustrated at the fact that he didn't know how to help her.
"I guess you're right."
Speaking of Korra," Hey, guys, what are you doing out here? Aren't you supposed to be in lunch? Mako, I got some of that pudding you like so much. Last one too."
Mako and Emma stared at her confused. She sure seemed more energetic and chipper today? Without realizing they had been staring at her too long she cleared her throat.
"Why are guys looking at me like that?"
Emma patted Mako's shoulder and whispered into his ear," Looks like your up, dude. I'll see you all later."
With that she left the two alone. There was an awkward silence until Korra finally spoke up," So are we eating lunch or what? I'm starving."
"Uh, yeah, sure. Why don't we eat outside today? Give Bolin and Emma some time alone?"
"Sure, why not."
After Korra got her food they made their way outside and sat under one of the trees.
After a lot of thinking Mako decided to ask," So, how come you seem more... better."
She raised her eyebrow," More better?"
"Uh, well, I-" he then noticed the dark drink sitting beside her," What's that?"
Korra's face grew red and laughed nervously," What, this? Oh, it's nothing."
Mako glanced at her and back down at the drink. Korra followed his eyes and figured out his next move, but she was too late," Hey, give it back!"
Mako opened up the canister and smelled the drink," Is this coffee? What are you drinking coffee for?"
She snatched the drink back, careful not to spill any," Why is that any of your business?"
"Well, it's my business now that you're acting all suspicious about it," he replied angrily.
"You should learn how to keep your nose in your own business then!" she spat back. What was his deal? It was just coffee! It wouldn't hurt anyone!
Just as Mako was about to open his mouth a static noise started coming from the intercoms," Good morning, Republic City. You all might already recognize my voice by now. I know the Avatar is here in Republic City and I will go through every water bender in thr city if I have to. We could make this easier and less... painful if the Avatar would just give themselves up. Your choice, Avatar."
His broadcast ended and everyone in the courtyard was silent. Everyone started to point out all the water benders that they saw, who had scared expressions on their face. Mako glanced over at Korra who was looking downward at her food. She could feel Mako's stare and she stared right back.
"Is there a problem, City Boy?"
He cleared his throat and went back to his food," So, are you worried about Amon? You know, now that he's focused on all the water benders."
Korra froze for a moment and regained her composure," I'm not afraid of him. He can come at me, I'm ready."
His face fell in disbelief,'She's lying right in front of me and I can't even confront her about it. Why won't she tell me the truth?'
"Aw, is someone worried about little ole me," she teased.
He began to blush, taking his scarf out from under his shirt to hide it," N-No..."
Korra looked at his scarf. That was the first time she'd ever seen it. She reached out and rubbed the fabric in between her fingers," What's this? I haven't noticed it before."
"It's, um... I'd rather not talk about..." it was a painful memory to talk about with anyone nonetheless remember.
She let go and looked at him apologetically,"Oh, I'm sorry.I shouldn't have brought it up..."
"No, it's fine," he put his scarf back and went back to the subject at hand," So, you're not afraid of Amon at all?"
"No? Why are you asking me all this, Mako?"
"No reason."
They ate the rest of their lunch in silence until the bell rang. They were the last ones left in the courtyard and after Mako threw away his food he heard Korra sneeze and drop her things.
"Bless y-" when he turned around he saw that her books were slightly singed on the edges and so was the grass," Korra?"
She wasn't there? Where did she go? He looked around the courtyard and saw the end of her ponytail right around the corner before it disappeared. He started to run to catch up her.
"Korra, wait!"
After turning another corner she wasn't there anymore. He looked around and noticed there was a door open. She had to have gone in there, right? He ran up a flight of stairs and was led to the rooftop.
"Korra?" he didn't see her
He walked around the rooftop looking everywhere but couldn't find her," Korra, I know you're up here."
"Go away, Mako!" Korra?
"Why did you run away like that? What happened to your books?"
"Just leave me alone already!" she yelled angrily. She came out from behind and a corner, her hands balled up into fists," Why did you even follow me up here?"
"Oh, I don't know. The burnt books and grass and the fact that you ran off got me a little curious," he answered sarcastically," Korra, what's wrong?"
"Nothing! Why can't everyone understand? Why do they keep asking me the same question?" she yelled again.
"Because we're all worried about you that's why! You haven't been acting like yourself, Korra! You've been so different lately and I'm pretty sure the only reason you're drinking coffee is to keep you awake at night to avoid your nightmares of Amon!" he stopped after realizing what he just said. 'She is going to kill me.'
"What did you say?" you could hear the menancing anger with every word said," What are you even talking about?"
He hesistated at first. Should he tell her that he knows or cover up with a lie?" Korra, I know what's been bothering you these past two weeks. Why didn't you tell me?"
She grabbed him by the collar and pushed him against a wall. His eyes widened in surprised,' This was a bad idea.'
"Listen to me, Mako, nothing is wrong with me. Nothing has been wrong with me. I am so tired of people asking me the same question over and over again. Everyone just hovers over me, watching me, asking the same stupid question. I can't get a moments peace alone anymore so just leave me alone!" if looks could kill Korra's glare would've killed him in an instant.
Mako noticed his shirt collar was getting warmer and warmer by the second. Korra seemed to have taken notice as well because she let him go. She walked away from him and began rubbing her temple. Mako has seen Korra mad, but this was a new level. She picked up her bookbag and started to walk out.
"I'll see you at work."
"Where are you going?"
"Schools not over yet, Mako," her voice echoed as she went further down the stairs.
"What am I going to do with her?"
School ended and Korra was already gone. The brothers were quiet on the way to work until Bolin broke the silence.
"So, did you talk to her?"
He glanced at him and back at the road," Emma told you, huh? I tried but she denied it all. She acted like I didn't know what I was talking about."
"Really?" he could hear the sadness in his voice," Why won't she tell us? We're her friends doesn't she trust us?"
"I don't know, Bo." he sighed. Even if he didn't get along with her as much as Bolin he still worried about her.
They arrived at the small noodle shop and greeted their uncle," Hey, Uncle."
"Hey there, boys. I was just about to send Korra out on an errand. Would one of you like to join her?" he asked.
Bolin raised his hand cheerfully," I'll go! Uh, what exactly are we doing?"
"Just need you two to pick up a shipment of spices from the docks. Korra, get over here! Mako, go take care of the tables," Mako nodded and he directed his attention towards the other two," Now, it's only two or three boxes and they're pretty small so you won't have any trouble carrying them. Don't take too long so no goofing off."
Bolin saluted his uncle," Yes, sir! Will do ,sir!"
Korra nudged him in the shoulder and dragged him away," Let's go, soldier."
"Yes, ma'am!"
Narook chuckled," Crazy kids."
Time went by, customers went in and out, and both Narook and Mako grew more worried by the minute.
Narook looked up at the clock," It's been two hours they should've been back by now."
"I could go look for them if you'd like, Uncle," Mako was just as worried as he was.
"Go, go, I'll hold down the fort here," just as Narook shooed him off Bolin came crashing through the door.
Leaning against the door frame, panting he was able to say," Korra... Gone... Equalists... Attacked... Can't Breathe!..."
Narook rushed over with a glass of water and sat him down on a stool. Bolin chugged the water down and his breathing steadied.
"Bolin, what happened? Where's Korra?"
"We were on our way to the docks when some Equalists attacked us out of no where. We tried to lose them but ended up in running into a dead end alley. They said something about the Avatar and taking Korra back to Amon. We tried fighting them off but they chi blocked us and knocked us out with those electrocuting sticks. When I woke up they were gone," Bolin had a guilty expression on his face," I should've tried harder!"
"Bolin, none of this is your fault. If anything Amon is to blame here. I heard his broadcast today and it looks like Korra's his next victim," he picked up the phone and started dialing," Yes, I'd like to speak to Chief Tonraq please? Well, interrupt the meeting then. His daugther is missing that is more important than some meeting!"
Mako looked over at Bolin and patted him on the back," Don't blame yourself, bro. Those Equalists are hard to take down since they know how to chi block."
"How are we going to find, Korra? Republic City is huge! They could be anywhere!"
"You can look for her after work if you would like. Tonraq is setting up a search party right now," Narook assured them.
They nodded and continued working. While they worked their minds were off somewhere else. Where could they have taken Korra? Republic City was so big it could be too late before they find Korra. The time to close finally arrived and they cleaned up the place as fast as they could. Before they could run out the door Tonraq appeared at the door.
"Mr. Tonraq, sir! Have you heard anything?" he shook his head and Bolin's face fell in disbelief.
"How can we help?" Mako asked.
"To be honest, I'm not sure," he said sadly," I was afraid this might happen, but I had hopes that nothing would be revealed when we transferred here."
They looked at each other in confusion. Was there something the Martinez family was hiding? What could it even be?
"No to sound nosy sir, but what do you mean?" Tonraq looked over at Narook, 'Did Uncle Narook know too?'
He sighed and pulled up a chair," Boys, since you are close friends with Korra and I need all the help I can looking for her... I should tell you the truth."
What were the brothers about to find out about their friend?
