Chapter 10: Confession
"Wake up Juudai, put on your uniform and brush your teeth!"
The fuzzy haired brunet groaned and rolled over. His bed was so nice and soft… Deciding to ignore his father, Juudai just relaxed back into the fluffy mattress, covers and pillow. So nice… soft… warm…. He was about to doze off again when the light, so bright, passed through his eyelids and hit his sensitive eyes. He solved the problem by covering his head with the blanket.
The light won with Yami on its side. Yami pulled the blanket off of the boy, impatiently tapping his foot to the floor. Juudai slowly opened his eyes, letting them adjust to the brightness of the ceiling lamp. His father was buttoning up his shirt with an undone tie hanging around his neck as he waited for the kid to wake up.
Juudai sat up on his bed, the chilly room going through his heated clothes and making him shiver. A couple months had passed and autumn was on its way. Things had quieted down and gotten back to normal. Yami hadn't been angry at Juudai again after the festival incident. No matter how hard he begged, Yami refused to get him a new fish since he had been irresponsible with Yuki. He was grounded and got his toys taken away, including his duel monster cards. Johan was very disappointed because he was looking forward to playing with Juudai, but eventually, Juudai got them back and they were able to play.
The game had brought the two friends even closer, always playing together and pairing up for activities that required two. So had Yami and Yuugi, much to Juudai's displeasure. Yami kept to his word. Whenever they went out they went alone. He was just, as he would call it, dumped at Jounouchi's house until Yami came to pick him back up. They would sometimes even kiss, on the lips! The little boy stuck out his tongue at the disgusting thought.
"Come on, get up." Yami said before leaving the room. Juudai sluggishly got out and went into the bathroom, brushing his teeth with his toothbrush before sitting down at the dining table. Yami was currently cooking up his own lunch and packing while he ate. Yami had figured that Juudai could be a slow eater, so he got up early to eat his own breakfast and make his lunch while the boy was eating. He would make everything in time with this routine.
As soon as the boy was done with eating, they would fly out of the door. There he would stay and chat with the other parents, getting tips on how to raise children, cooking and where to get the best boy's clothes. Apparently, being a single young father had made him twice as attractive. Young and old mothers would swarm around him. He was usually saved by Ryou who would drag him back to work or a very jealous Yuugi.
"Hello Yami." A female voice said from behind him. He turned around to see a young woman smiling at him with a little girl holding her hand. She wore a red cap, meaning she was in Juudai's class. If he remembered correctly, she was a single mother, victim to teen pregnancy and a boyfriend with cold feet.
"Hello." He smiled back nicely, feeling a little bad for forgetting her name. She opened her mouth as if to say something but closed it again with a huff, walking past Yami. The man raised an eyebrow, turning around to see what the woman's deal was. But then he saw Yuugi. Word had gotten around that the two of them were dating. Exchanging a brief hug, they walked into the kindergarten grounds together. The two tried to display as little public affection as possible, especially in front of the kindergarten.
"Where's Juudai?" Yuugi asked. That's something that bothered Yami. Yuugi had started to ask that every time they met up ever since the festival. It was as if he was on guard. Yami looked around, Juudai had pried himself away when the young mother had greeted him. Then he saw that Juudai was playing on the monkey bars with Johan. A little further away, Ryou was talking with Anzu.
"He's at the monkey bars." He answered. Yami's eyes glided over to Omote, who was still hiding behind Yuugi. It was weird though, it was as if the kid was afraid of everything. Yuugi quickly handed Omote over to Anzu. He found it peculiar too, that Omote wasn't telling Anzu what he did after school like he used to do, but rather hide behind her.
Ryou walked over to Yami after his talk with Anzu, and grabbed Yami by the shoulder, dragging him along without another word. But Yami pulled himself free, knowing exactly what Ryou was going at. "Yuugi!" He addressed his boyfriend. Yes, they had gotten official. "I'm going to have to work real late at the office because we have to present to Kaiba what we have so far. The whole team needs to be present, including Jounouchi so could you please also pick up Juudai and babysit him for tonight?"
"Y-Yam-"
"Yami we're going to be late." Yuugi's words were drowned out by Ryou who sounded very irritated. The man was usually calm and collected, but he was incredibly irritable when stressed.
"Great, I'll treat you to dinner as thanks!" Yami said quickly and stole a quick kiss from Yuugi.
"I really don't want to…" Yuugi's protest had fallen on deaf ears. Yami and Ryou were almost running down the street. Yuugi turned back to look at the playground. Juudai was laughing and swinging with the teal haired boy. He was absolutely not looking forward to the evening.
-o-o-o-o-o-
Nervously, Yuugi looked at the time of his phone. The children would soon be let out of the kindergarten. Other parents were already waiting there, either chatting with each other or busying themselves with their phones.
The doors opened and a flood of screaming and laughing children entered the playgrounds. Yuugi didn't even have to look for Omote, for he soon felt an extra weight on his legs. However, no matter how long he waited, Juudai never came out. All other parents had left with their child but still no Juudai. Omote's constant pleas to go home didn't help his mood at all.
He went inside, having to drag his little brother with him. He was going to ask Omote what was bothering him because he never used to act like this. He loved going to kindergarten and to Anzu, but now, it was as if Omote really disliked it. Ever since… Juudai attended. Yuugi stopped for a moment. Could this be Juudai's doing? The paint thing had been an accident and the fish had just been a prank. Besides, if Omote got bullied, Anzu would've told him.
Shaking his head clear of the accusations, he walked into the classroom of Omote and Juudai, where indeed, the kid still was. He was sitting at a table and coloring a picture.
"Juudai." Yuugi called to grab his attention. Juudai looked up but his face showed little emotion. "I have been waiting for you outside. Come on, you're going home with me." Yuugi said. Juudai simply shook his head and returned to his coloring.
"Papa will come and pick me up." He said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Yuugi started to get a little agitated.
"No, he's working late today and asked me if I could look after you until he gets back." Yuugi stated. Juudai shrugged.
"Then uncle Jounouchi will come."
Yuugi felt the urge to throw something. It was very weird, he was a patient person and could never hurt someone, let alone a child. "He is with your father, working late too."
"I don't believe you."
Yuugi sighed and took out his phone, dialing Yami's number. He placed it to his ear and listened to the dial tone until he finally heard Yami's voice. His heart skipped a beat at the voice of him, but he reminded himself that he was calling for a reason.
"Hey Yami, I'm sorry to disturb you at work but Juudai won't come with me…." He said. Omote watched as his older brother talked on the phone and Juudai nonchalantly colored. Juudai was going to come over to their house? The only place where he felt safe?
Yuugi handed to phone to Juudai. It was silent as the boy listened to the other side. He was starting to look mortified. "B-but daddy!" He said but was interrupted by Yami speaking. The little boy gave a small sigh. "Okay." He muttered. "I'll be good." Juudai bid his father goodbye and handed the phone back to Yuugi.
"Do you believe me now?" Yuugi asked, pocketing his phone. Juudai didn't say a thing as he stood up and packed his stuff. Anzu returned to the classroom.
"Ah! Yuugi, what are you still doing here?" She asked.
"Yami asked me if I could look after Juudai until he's done with work." He explained. Anzu let out a soft 'aaaw'.
"You two are really getting close aren't you?" She teased, playfully nudging him. Yuugi blushed as graphic images crossed his mind. He was saved however, by Juudai.
"Let's go." The kid demanded. Yuugi quickly said bye to Anzu and grabbed a hand of each of the two children and went home. Juudai paid good attention to his surroundings. He wanted to know the route back to his school well enough, if he couldn't stand being at Yuugi's house.
Juudai recognized the store where he bought his first duel monsters cards with Yami. Did Yuugi also live here? They walked to a door around the corner, which Yuugi opened and ushered the two kids inside. Juudai took of his shoes and felt suddenly uncomfortable. What if he did something wrong and Yami would get mad at him again? But… Yami only got mad at him because he admitted he dropped the fish into Yuugi's yukata. If they didn't know it was him… they wouldn't get mad at him right?
Yuugi gave him a gentle push into the living room. He was sat down on the couch, together with Omote. "I'm going to prepare lunch. Omote why don't you take out your toys and play with Juudai?" Yuugi suggested.
"Where's mommy?" Omote asked, feeling uneasy with being alone with Juudai. Yuugi hummed, rubbing his chin in thought.
"I don't know, she should've been back from therapy already… I'll call her." He said and went into the kitchen. Omote nodded and shuffled to the cabinet where he stored the toys. He took out a small storage box, and opened the lid.
"Y-you can play with anything you want." Omote said nervously. Even though Juudai disliked Omote, he was still curious as to what the other kid had for toys. Juudai just poured out the contents unto the floor. A couple toy cars, airplanes, a few brain games and a lot of Lego pieces fell out of the container. Omote slapped his hands in front of his mouth to keep himself from screaming. If Yuugi heard the scream, he would immediately come over to see what was wrong and Juudai would be even angrier at him!
Juudai looked through the toys and decided he didn't like any of them. He climbed on the couch and turned on the TV with the remote control. Omote quickly sat down near the spilled toys and picked them up to place them back in the bin. Yuugi happened to walk into the room, done with the phone.
"Omote!" He said with a raised voice. "What did I tell you about making a mess?! You choose one and play with that!" Omote shrunk as he got scolded despite being innocent.
"B-but I didn't d-do it!" Omote replied, already on the verge of tears. The boy really didn't like being yelled at. Yuugi looked at Juudai who was sitting on the couch, watching television with an angelic face. He looked back at Omote with a raised eyebrow. Omote knew he was caught 'lying' so didn't say anything that could get him into more trouble. A few tears escaped his big violet eyes as he picked up the spilled toys.
Juudai tried to pay the other kid no heed as he watched some anime shows. He again felt really bad but he hadn't done it on purpose this time. Yuugi watched as Omote cleaned up the toys and put them away. "Now go to your room and think about what you've done. I have told you countless of times not to make a mess. If mom was home, you know that she would've lost it if she saw the mess."
Omote finished up and went to his room with a hung head. Yuugi watched everything with a stern look until the boy shut the door behind him. Then he went into the kitchen and slumped into a chair. Their life had gotten so much harder after his father left. Thinking he left her because she was 'filthy', she became an Obessive Compulsive Cleaner. He was fine with it at first, but it got worse fast. She started to become scared of touching other humans, thinking they carried filth with them. That's why he didn't want to introduce Yami to his family just yet.
Yami…. Ever since he had started to officially date the other man, things just went wrong. Omote had suddenly become much more secluded, and he hated to admit it, but he didn't like Juudai that much. Even though he had said the prank was just harmless, it made Yuugi hate goldfish. He sometimes still felt the slippery carcass of the fish in his clothes. A shudder went down his spine at the thought. Then there was the paint incident. But the kid had fallen.
Yuugi seriously considered breaking it off with Yami… but he liked the man too damn much. Where was he to find someone as sweet and caring as Yami? He sighed deeply, burying his face into his arms on the table. He seriously trusted the man and there was no one else as patient as him.
He didn't tell anyone, but he was the one suffering most after his father left. He was in his teenage years and his mom was still pregnant. Because of the depression, she gave birth to him too early. That was also when the OCC started. Seeing the messes Omote made as a baby. She started hating filth. Omote came out of her. She was the main source of filth. She started looking less after her two sons and focused more on cleaning. Yuugi had almost raised Omote by himself.
He had just heard from her therapist that she was actually going on a date set up by him. The man was a fellow OCC and knowing the two were obsessive cleaners, they were willing to give it a shot. A fellow OCC couldn't be dirty, right? Leaning his head into the palm of his hand with his elbow on the table, he thought things over. Omote probably wouldn't be affected by it too much. The child had been asking about his father. Yuugi never wanted him to know about that jerk that was his real father. Hopefully this man would be nice to his little brother.
A small dreamy smile appeared on his face. If his mom and the man worked things out and eventually got married, he would be married to Yami, or at least living together. He had suffered for so long and the little things in life that had brought him happiness were his little brother Omote and Yami. However, Omote was suddenly showing signs of depression and Yami was too busy with work and his own child. He wondered if he wasn't allowed any happiness.
Realizing he had mulled over his thoughts for too long, he went back to the living room to check up on Juudai. The little boy was so engrossed with the TV that he stayed good the whole time. Omote was only allowed out for dinner. Yami came to pick Juudai up soon after.
"Thank you so much for babysitting Yuugi. I'll call you and we'll go out sometime soon okay?" He said. He hastily kissed Yuugi's cheek and was gone before Yuugi could say anything. This is what he meant by 'busy with work and Juudai'. With a sigh he closed the door behind him and walked to Omote's room. The little boy had already gone to bed, with his back to the door.
"Why did you make that mess?" He asked calmly. Omote sniffled and turned around.
"I didn't." He said softly. Yuugi sighed and sat on the edge of the boy's bed.
"What did I tell you about lying?"
"I'm not lying!" Omote suddenly burst out. Then he gasped and shut his mouth, afraid of being scolded for raising his voice to an adult.
"Well… when I walked in you were playing with them while Juudai was watching the television." Omote moaned and lied back down, pulling the blankets over him. Yuugi sighed and lightly petted the form under the blanket. Maybe he was too hard on Omote. If Juudai had done it, would he have reacted the same? Probably not. He would've cleaned it all up and told the boy not to make a mess. "I'm not going to punish you. But just don't do it again." Omote didn't react as he listened to his older brother leaving the room.
"But I didn't do it…"
Yuugi waited up for his mother to come home. It was almost midnight and he was getting worried. He had an early shift tomorrow but he couldn't stop worrying. Finally the door opened and his mother entered the living room. She had a huge smile, one like he hadn't seen in a while, on her face.
"Mom, what took you so long?" He asked, getting up an hugging her. His mother hugged Yuugi back, to his surprise.
"Akira and I had such a good time we just forgot the time." She giggled like a middle school girl. "Now it's late and I'm pretty tired. You should sleep too." She said and almost skipped to her room. Yuugi went to his own room and turned off all the lights, crawling under the sheets. At least one of the Mutou's had finally found some happiness.
