Chapter 10: Tragedy Strikes

It has been five days since I last saw Grover and the others, I've been walking and hitchhiking whenever I can. I'm sore and tired, Thalia's aura trick wore off two days ago, so there are hardly any monsters. But I can never let my guard down.

It's probably mid-day, I lost my watch, when I final relax under a tree finally able to get away from the gorgons. I ran out of arrows, still had my bow, the only thing to protect myself is a dagger, I lost everything that was in my backpack. I am covered in dirt, slime and even my blood, and my clothes are ruined beyond repair, I let out a sigh as my legs finally gave out on me. I could tell I was close to camp maybe another few miles or so, I should be there by evening or tonight.

I closed my eyes taking in the sun that streamed through the leaves, it was so relaxing I could just stay here without a care in the world. But that is never going to happen, off to the distance I could hear rustling coming towards me, I quickly stood up but my legs felt like jelly and I landed on my knees. I gritted my teeth and stood up again leaning on the tree for support.

The rustling came closer and I started to become scared, all I thought in my head was that I'm going to die today when I am so close to camp, I'll never get to see my friends again. I close my eyes waiting for whatever it is to attack but the attack never came I slowly opened my eyes. And standing there was a satyr, I couldn't believe it, I felt like I was going to cry.

"Oh gods are you alright!?"

I look up at the satyr and nodded wiping away the tears and flowed down my cheeks, "yeah I'm fine, I'm just happy that you found me."

"Come, let's get you to camp, hurry." Again I nodded but I couldn't take a step, the satyr saw that I was having trouble so he grabbed my arm and placed it on his shoulder and he supported me all the way to camp.

It was a slow trek but we finally made it to camp, I was so relived to be back, I want to see the others so badly, and wanting to see Thalia, Luke and Annabeth made it to camp safely. As we made it to the pavilion I was about to pass out, I haven't eaten since two or three days ago. The satyr, name Fergus, set me down on my cabin's table and quickly left to get me some food and Nectar, I slowly turned so I could rest my head on the cool table top.

I was so at ease I didn't realize I fell asleep until I woke up in the infirmary, I sat up looking around, groaning as pain shoot through my whole body.

"Easy, Jenna, rest, you are safe now."

I turn and sitting in his magical wheelchair is Chiron, "we found you on the pavilion floor, the satyr quickly summoned me and we moved you here" I nodded and Chiron handed me some Nectar, easing away the pain.

"Thank you Chiron," I finished the drink and placed it on the table, "Jenna, I have a few questions to ask."

"Sure ask away" I said as I laid back on the comfy makeshift bed.

"Ok, first, what happened? Where is Thalia and the others?"

I quickly sat up ignoring the pain and looked at him with disbelief, "Sir they are supposed to be here! I saw them get on a train that will lead them straight here to New York what do you mean they are not here!?"

"Easy Jenna, easy, and yes they are not here yet please tell me what happened."

I told the story to Chiron that they got on the train and I led away the monsters to they could come to New York without any problems.

"This is bad." Chiron started to wheel away shaking his head murmuring things under his breath. I started to feel guilty, if I haven't left maybe things would be different but I couldn't catch the train on time either way.

"Sir, please let me go and find them, it's my fault that I left them on their own please let me find them."

"No, Jenna you are weak and injured, you need rest, I shall contact Grover, and it's not your fault, you did what you thought was best do not blame yourself child."

Chiron wheeled out and as the squeaking sound of the chairs was replaced by the sounds of hooves. As I laid on the bed, my mind was racing, trying to understand what went wrong but soon a massive headache came. "Urg how can the children of Athena do this?"

A pang of guilt and sadness hit me hard, Annabeth, she could be dead and it's all my fault, I closed my eyes praying to the gods that they are ok, but I highly doubt they will listen. After a while the headache got worse, I groaned in pain. I nearly jumped out of the bed when I felt a hand on my forehead, I open my eyes to see Lea and Michael standing over me with concern in their eyes.

"Hey there sleepy head, you ok?"

I nod and allowed Lea to use her healing powers on me, kind of sucks that we can't use our healing on ourselves, after a while the pain went away.

"Sis, I'm so glad you're ok." I smiled and grabbed Michael's hand, "yeah same here, I missed you guys."

Lea, placed a wet cloth on my forehead, "you have a fever and an infected wound, but don't worry its going away." I nodded and Lea excused herself as she went to a counselor's meeting, Michael stayed by my side telling me all that has happened while I wasn't here. I listened to him as he explained what happened between Will and Lee and the prank war they had with the Hermes' kids, and of course the Hermes' kids won, until I could hear footsteps coming our way in a fast pace.

"JENNA! YOU'RE OK!"

I sighed, 'so much for my quiet time,' a flash of pink quickly surrounded me, before I could say anything Susie was tightly hugging me with so my force my back popped in certain areas, but it felt nice.

"Ugh…ni…ce…to…see…you… SUSIE I CAN'T BREATHE!" Susie instantly let me go saying apologize as she sat at the foot of my bed.

"I'm sorry, I got worried when I heard you were in the infirmary and I had to come see if you were ok and…and….OH JENNA I'M SO GLAD YOUR OK!" Susie started crying her eyes out, the weirdest thing her make-up didn't run.

"Come on Susie, don't cry see she is fine and there is nothing to worry about." I sighed in relief when Greg came in trying to make Susie stop crying. "It's nice to see that you are still in the land of the living." I gave a little chuckle, "yeah I'm glad, so many monsters that I lost count just on the first day."

"Jenna, where Luke and the others?" Susie asked as she looked around, "I thought they would be here with you." My high spirited mood quickly make a U-turn into depression world, as Susie talked about Luke and the others were probably at the Big House, Greg tapped her on the shoulder to make her stop talking. Susie turned to me and I could feel myself near tears.

"They are not with me, I left them on a train so they could escape while I lead the monsters away, and they're not here."

"Oh, Jenna, I'm so sorry I didn't know….I…."

"It's ok Susie, I'm sure they are on their way here, Chiron said he will contact Grover." I gave them a brave smile, trying to convince them that everything is under control but even I, myself, don't sound convincing.

The rest of the day was a blur of food and pain, but I was able to go outside to go eat with my siblings at the pavilion. As I gave up my juiciest brisket to my dad, I sent a pray to him for the others safety and return, sitting back at the table it was just me, Michael and Lea, Lee and Will were off who knows where in the camp. Sitting here again with other campers of surrounding me, I felt safe again, it was nice but the warm feeling didn't last long.

"MONSTERS! MONSTERS COMING UP THE VALLEY!"

With no warning everything went into chaos, campers' quickly grabbed weapons, and satyrs running herding the little ones to safe house, nymphs rushing out of the woods ready to fight. I quickly grabbed my bow and quiver readying for battle, Lea quickly left to go find Lee and Will to take them to safety.

"Jenna what is going on?" I turn to see Susie and Greg running, Michael was shaking and hid behind me thinking they were monsters. I picked up Michael and handed him over to Susie, "I don't know what is going on but it must be them, Susie take Michael to the infirmary so he could be ready to heal anyone that is injure." Susie nodded and ran off with Michael, I turned to Greg and together we ran to the crest of the hill, as we got there dark clouds rolled in with thunder and lightning, Zeus is not happy.

Chiron and everyone one else were waiting for the monsters to appear from the clearing below, of to the distance I could hear voices, screams and curses, I looked a Chiron and he looked back down to me, we had a silent conversation and finally he nodded. I grabbed Greg by the wrist and together we ran down the hill towards the voices, I could hear Chiron giving orders but I didn't pay attention, my only thought was I had to get the others to safety.

Greg and I jumped the white picket fence and ran across the road, from there we can hear them, and they are close.

"COME ON HURRY WE ARE ALMOST THERE!"

I instantly recognized Grover's voice and veered a sharp left, and right in a small clearing was Grover, who was running ahead, Luke, who was carrying Annabeth on his back and Thalia who was taking the rear fighting off the monsters. I quickly brought an arrow to my bow and let it fly, as it flew it let out a high pitch sound which cause the monsters to run away.

"GROVER!" both Greg and I called out, Grover turned to face us, he was covered in slime, cuts, and bruises, but he is face let up like a Christmas tree when he saw us running up to them.

"Thank the gods!" Grover ran and gave me a big goat hug, I quickly hugged him and pushed him away and shot an arrow to a monster who was sneaking up behind Thalia, "Thalia come on we need to get out of here!" I turned to Luke, who looked like he was going to pass out, "Luke let me carry Annabeth, Greg will help you." Luke looked at me before nodding and handing me Annabeth who was shaking in fear. I knelt down so she could climb on my back and hosted her higher on my back, I made a quick check, checking to see if everything was in order. Luke was leaning on Greg as Greg supported him, while Grover was trying to get Thalia as she lashed out on a monster.

"Alright, let's go, everyone one is ready for the battle we have to get there before we get into the crossfire." Everyone nodded weakly and we started making our way to the crest, the monsters were coming at us at different angles, Greg had to give Luke to Grover so he could help Thalia fight off the monsters, I would try to shoot at the Furies as they circled above us, but they were too quick.

"Chiron! We got them now! Ready to charge!" I finally made it up the hill along with Grover and Luke, I handed Annabeth to a satyr and quickly joined the fight as everyone charged when they saw Thalia and Greg running up the hill.

But the battle didn't last long, there was just too many monsters for us to handle, everyone was getting injured by the second we were outnumbered. I was quickly running out of arrows, so I brought my sword and started cutting monsters who were getting close to the border. Even though they can't cross, some are lucky to get by, I suddenly found myself with Luke as he battled a hellhound, as we fought together the air around started to taste metallic, I quickly turned to see Thalia at the crest of the hill with a spear in hand, monsters were surrounding her from all sides.

"THALIA!" both Luke and I called out and we both ran up to go help her, but it was too late, Thalia turned her head to face us and time seemed to slow down, a tear ran down her cheek and gave us a sad smile and whispered…

"Goodbye"

The next thing that happened was a blur and a flash of light, the next thing I know I'm lying on my side with Luke's arms wrapped around me, I couldn't hear correctly everything was muffled, but I can hear Luke's and my name being called. I slowly sat up trying to see what is going on, but everything was still, I left Luke shift as he sat up also, everyone was starting at the top of the crest so I turned also. Then I remember that Thalia was at the top, turning I was thinking Thalia did it and she got rid of the monsters but, no. Right in the spot where she was standing was a pine tree.

"Zeus…he turn Thalia into the tree."

I turn to the voice and Chiron was standing right next to me, I turned back to the tree then to him, "he did?" Chiron nodded, Luke who was still sitting was shocked, and I could feel him shaking. I turn to him to see that he has tears in his eyes, I wrapped my arms around trying to comfort him but I couldn't stop my own tears from falling.

"Jenna, Luke, I know this is difficult but come you both need to be treated. Especially you Jenna." I didn't know what he was talking about I felt fine, but when I tried to move my legs, pain flared through my right leg, I look down to see a gash running down my calf to my foot. I nodded and Chiron holds out his hand so I could get up but Luke grip around me tighten, I turned to him but Luke wouldn't move, he was just staring at the tree, believing that Thalia would come back.

I hang my head in shame, I failed to protect a half-blood, and I failed Luke, Annabeth, Grover, Chiron and the gods. "I shall bring one of your siblings stay here." I nodded and try to comfort him, finally he started to cry letting all the pain and misery out, I held Luke as he cried trying to comfort him. Before I could say anything to him, I heard my name being called out, I looked around to see Michael and Susie running towards me, as they got closer I could see that Michael had tears in his eyes.

"Michael, what's wrong?" Michael grabbed my hand trying to free myself from Luke, but Luke held his grip, "Jenna hurry you have to come Lea is hurt!" now that got my attention, I pulled at Luke's arm so he could let me go, finally he did and looked at me with red, puffy eyes. "Luke, I'll be back, I have to go see Lea." I said as I hauled him up to his feet, but he seems to be in a daze.

"Susie take him to the Big House, and make sure he is ok, I got to see Lea." Susie nods and starts walking Luke to the Big House, together me and Michael made our way to the infirmary, as we walked, well limped, everyone was getting their things and check for injuries, since there are only five Apollo kids it's going to be hard.

Finally we made it to the infirmary, I limped over to a bed where Lee and Will were, as I got closer I could instantly smell death, I hurried over and when I got there I wanted to throw up. Lea was on the bed wheezing, trying to breathe, on her throat was a bite mark and it was deep.

"Oh gods Lea!" I quickly placed my hand over the wound but a Lea grabbed my hand preventing me from healing her.

"It's….ok…sis…"

"Lea please let me heal you," I placed my other hand over, but again she stopped me by grabbing my wrist, "its…ok…I…know…I won't…live…you're the… counselor now" Lea release my wrist and brought up her bow, this was no ordinary bow it has been passed down to counselor to counselor for how many years now. I took the bow with a shaky hand, and held it close, this bow has seen so many death and battle, "its…yours now…take care…all of you…I…lo…love…you…guys…"

"Lea? Lea?" I hung my head as the boys were calling to Lea, I grabbed Will, who was close to Lea and hugged him as he called out to her. Michael and Lee did the same trying to find comfort from me, I was trying my best to be strong for them, but I couldn't hold back the tears.

I failed two people today, Thalia and Lea will never be forgotten, and I swear to protect half-bloods as long as I live.

This I swear.
