Chapter 10: World War I and Our Separation
A/N: Right. So, 2014 is the centenarian of the beginning of WWI. I want to send my regards to those whose family members were killed by one of the biggest mistakes in human history.
Hey, it was time I updated. I promise to have something new during the first 2 weeks in June. I'm finally finishing school! :D
…..
The dawn of 1914 found us arguing with our moody neighbor, Serbia. We were adopting a boy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, but Serbia opposed. It was natural to oppose us, having many of his people in there, now that I come to think about it. However, Serbia went too far when he murdered my superior's heir: Franz Joseph I, as he and his wife were visiting Bosnia.
As soon as we discovered that a Serb was the murderer, Hungary prompted me to punish the Serbians.
"Oh, Austria! We cannot leave this matter without a punishment!"
"I know we can't, but… Imagine what is going to happen if things go wrong…" I commented in a moment of reverie.
"Germany has offered unconditional support. He sent a letter today," she said, handing me a manila envelope. She had already opened it, I could notice.
It was clear that war was breaking out. And then, Russia threatened Germany, Hungary and your narrator. Great Britain, France and even Japan added up as enemies. And Italy, my "ally" abandoned Germany and us, choosing to give information to the Triple Entente (Russia, France, and England).
How many nights did Hungary and I had to sleep in the ground, with rocks as pillows? Oh, I cannot even remember how many times I had to do so. During the night, ants prowled over us, biting and causing us to lose the desire to sleep.
Hungary, Germany, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria and me had many meetings to coordinate our attacks. With the use of airplanes, gas weapons (which I personally oppose) and the new invention of tanks, we fought for 4 years.
Yes, the Allies won in the end.
It was Germany's fault for taunting U.S.A. with the famous Mexican telegram and the U-Ship attacks. Alfred can get quite excited while using weapons… just as Ludwig did.
Thing is, this expression of wild nationalism ended with my marriage. It ended with my monarchy, and took away many of those I called my children, Bosnia-H., Czechoslovakia, and, well, many who have died as of modern times. And it was worse when America came to take away our wedding rings, humiliating us and making my wife, former wife, cry. She shed bitter tears, and, whilst I tried to remain strong… I could barely handle it, and tears also rolled on my cheeks.
My younger brother, Germany was severely punished, maybe too much. And my marriage, which was finally working smoothly, had failed due to a silly event. All of this, due to frenzied nationalism and greed.
A/N: Booo-hoo! They were separated! But fear not, sooner or later the sun comes to shine… I hope. Remember, I'm returning on JUNE!
