Believe it or not, but I'm back :) You can thank Elise Deschat, she made me feel ashamed because I have left this story for over 2 years. So I just thought I would end it for you guys. But then the strangest thing happened, I fell in love with this story again. So instead of writing one chapter to finish it I am just going to continue and keep the quality in the story. There will be more chapters, yeah!
So, here is my apologie. There isn't any excuse, I didn't die or took a trip to Mars, I just simply stopped writing. I'm very sorry about that, I know how frustrating it is if a story isn't finished properly. So I will do my best to keep going until the very end and below this chapter, as a present to all my fans if there are any left :(, there are the very first words of my new story FORGIVENESS. It is inspired by the episode Behind The Blue Line. Not so much Darren Kovacs or the arena, but more the emotion Sam displayed.
Well enjoy!
"Officer down, officer down" a member of team 5 yelled through their mics. There were a lot of noises coming from the intercoms, people shouting, guns shooting and heavy breathing.
Greg was lying on top of Ed who wasn't moving. He noticed hands on his legs and belt while he felt himself being pulled into the interrogation room. For a moment he was worried about Ed being left in the hallway, but to his surprise Ed was moving along with him. He hadn't seen anyone in the hallway, but the bullets were still flying through the air. Someone was again yelling something through their mics and it took Greg a moment before he realized it was the teamleader from team 3 asking everyones status. Everyone from team 3 appeared to be okay and team 5 had two officers down, whose status were unknown at the moment. It took a second before someone from team one responded.
"Team one, three officers down" was what Greg heard from behind him. It was Spike who had taken control. He felt himself being lifted from Ed and sat against the wall. His eyes shivered over his team members but he couldn't figure out who the third man down was. So far Spike, Leah and Adam seemed to be alright. It took him another few seconds before he realized they were talking about him. He wanted to stand up to tell them he was fine, but dizziness took over and he collapsed against te wall. He moved his hand to his head and pulled it back in front of his face. His hand was marked with blood. Before him he saw Ed lying motionless on the ground and he noticed there was blood on Ed's head too. Or was it his blood? He wanted to ask Spike what was wrong with Ed, however no words came from his mouth.
Wordy was standing against the wall while observing the doctors, Jules and mostly Sam. It was difficult to take your eyes of the man who you presumed dead for two weeks. But even if that wasn't the case, his eyes were drawn to the many marks on his skin and the unusual behavior he displayed. Sam's eyes were closed and he kept moving his head in a 'no' gesture. He had done so from the moment he saw him, only pausing it when he was focusing on Jules.
Every unexpected sound of motion made him flinch and sometimes he was just mumbling something unintelligible. In the mean time the doctors were replaced by a single nurse.
"Hi Sam, my name is Beth and I will be your nurse for the night. I'm going to give you something for the pain and if you want you can have a pill to help you sleep" Beth the nurse introduced herself. Se was quit a beautiful woman somewhere in her forties with a Jules like demeanor. Sam opened his eyes and it was clear he was debating the sleeping pill. However the eyes of the nurse told him even though she asked it as a question, there wouldn't be much of an option. A smile appeared on Sam's lips, it was hardly noticeable but Wordy saw it nonetheless. Sam shifted his head a bit towards Jules before a small horse voice came from him.
"I think you two will get just along" Sam said to her, while his small smile was rewarded with a bigger smile from Jules.
It has been an hour since the nurse left and Sam had taken the sleeping pill. But even though his eyes were closed and he was somewhat a sleep, every movement they made created a cringe on his face. So Wordy and Jules kept quiet and stayed in their spot. Wordy really wanted a chance to talk to Jules, to see how she was feeling, but it had to wait until later. Softly, without making a noise, he pulled out his cellphone. His cellphone was on silent and he saw that he missed a call from Spike. He didn't dare to call Spike back, risking to wake up Sam. So he sent him a message asking about their status.
Spike was bringing his hands over Ed's body to scan for his injuries. His pulse was strong but he was still unconscious. He had found blood on his head and was now looking for the source of it. "How is he doing?" Leah asked, while she was over at the boss his side.
"He seems to be scraped by a bullet on the side of his head. Nothing more than a scrape, so I don't understand why he's still out of it. How about the boss?" Spike answered her. "I think he is hit by the same bullet that scraped Ed's head." Leah replied.
"The bullet is still in there and it seems he has difficulty speaking, however his blood pressure is not worrisome and he is awake." There was a mixture of relief and worry in her voice.
"Winnie, how are we on backup?" Spike called through the intercom. The shooting had stopped but Spike wasn't reassured about that.
"Police has circled the building an no-one has come out. They will stay in position while more force is on it's way along with the Domestic Counter-Terrorism Unit. They are minutes away. Medical assistance is on standby with doctors on site. If possible stay in your location until the whole building is cleared." Winnie informed Spike and along with that all the other officers in the building. From all three teams confirmations were given.
"Thanks Winnie", Spike answered as his confirmation and he was impressed by her adequate actions during these chaotic and somewhat confusing time. She would do great working out in the field, however right now he was glad she was sitting behind her desk.
Spike got up from Ed's side, satisfied that he will be fine until the paramedics could take over. Glancing at his boss he wasn't so sure about him. Head injuries are very tricky and he wasn't comfortable being to long in this room. The room itself freaked him out with all the torture attributes on display on the table. It wasn't until Spike glanced through the room that he noticed Adam for the first time since the shooting. He was very calmly standing against the wall watching the scene in front of him. Something about his demeanor stroke Spike as odd. He initially wanted to check out the hallway, it had been quiet for a while and he wanted to get the boss out as soon as possible and check on Donna, for whom he feared the worst. However, right now he didn't feel comfortable turning his back to their newest team member. With Leah positioned between the boss and Ed, Spike decided to explore the room a bit more.
"Adam" Spike called their team mate. "Take a position at the door to catch any movement or sounds from the hallway" Spike ordered him.
Adam nodded and turned around and walked over to the door. Spike took this moment to silently inform Leah that he didn't completely trusted Adam. Leah quickly nodded that she understood and that told Spike that she too had her suspicion about Adam.
Spike wondered through the room, every now and then glancing at all four team mates back at the door. Other than one table full with attributes and a couple of chairs there wasn't much more in the room. But under the table Spike spotted a black sports bag which felt heavy. With some reluctance he placed the bag on the table to open it and to find its content. In the bag he found a videorecorder with several tapes and about a couple dozen of pictures. The first twenty or so were pictures from the team after the explosion and some from the funeral. It was clear that they all had been observed closely. Probably to make sure no-one expected anything. However the fact that these pictures where here in the bag, suggested that they were maybe used to torment Sam. These pictures weren't particular fun to look at, but they were nothing compared to the last dozens of pictures. All of them were shot with a polaroid camera and all of them were from Sam. Sam in different positions, undergoing different types of torture. Spike quickly put the pictures back in the bag and walked over to Leah at the moment Winnie informed them that back up had arrived and would enter right at that moment into the building from all three entrances.
Sophie woke up in the middle of the night to find the bed next to her still empty. Since Ed had received a message from Jules she hadn't heard from him since. She quickly got out of bed to check if she had received a message from him. However, there wasn't any. Just before she went to bed she had tried to call Ed to see if everything was fine. He wasn't supposed to be on duty tonight and specially not on anything more than patrolling. She picked up her phone again and pressed the speed dial number to call Ed. The phone rang several times before it went to voicemail. She left a message asking him to call her back. She didn't want to go back to bed and ly awake, worried about what was going on, so instead she headed to the kitchen to make some tea. With her hot tea she settled on the couch and turned on the tv. There was an action movie playing with cops chasing in their cars after a subject. That was not really settling her mind so she started to flip through the channels until she saw the letters:
BREAKING NEWS TORONTO POLICE OFFICERS UNDER FIRE TORONTO ON LOCKDOWN.
Her heart stopped beating for a second and she turned up the volume to hear what the lady on the new was saying.
"It is not clear exactly what is going on, but earlier this night there were reports of gunfire in a Toronto business park. The whole area has been locked and as it looks like over a hundred police officers are checking out the surroundings. People in whole Toronto are advised to stay inside until further notice. Roadblocks have been set up all over Toronto and Ontario with the help of the Canadian Border Security. We also just received the news that inside that building, there are several police officer from the Strategic Response Unit under fire by an unknown party. We are going live to Andy McGregor who is on site. Andy, what can you tell us about the situation?"
"Well Sharon, we are not able to come any closer than this. As you can see there are police cars driving up and down the road we are standing on. Right at the moment we are standing at the entrance of the business park and down this road is a warehouse or building that apparently was used by criminal activity. Earlier this night SRU did an invasion that turned out into a shooting spree. What we first presumed to be gang related is now heading more towards terrorism. We have seen cars and vans driving by without identification on them and it is believed these are officers from the Domestic Counter-Terrorism Unit. As soon as we find out more we will get back to you Sharon".
"Thank you Andy, we will speak to you later. We will now go to our reporter down town who is standing in front of St. Simon Hospital. Robert, what is the news on your side of the town?"
"Hello Sharon, we can only guess that this has something to do with what is going on at Andy's side of the town, but apparently the ER of St. Simon has been completely evacuated except for one person. He arrived around midnight in a black SUV and since then no one has been permitted to come inside the ER. All new patients have been directed to the nearest hospital in town. All patients that were inside the ER were either hospitalized to their ward or transferred to other hospitals. We have spoken to some patients who have left the ER and they informed us that a man was brought down under guidance of paramedics and what looked like an undercover cop. They got the feeling that it was a very important person."
Thank you Robert. We will get back to you when there is more information. In the mean time a police spokesmen confirmed that there are 18 SRU members inside the building. There are at least 4 injured and one police officer is confirmed dead. This must come as a shock to the unit, who have only lost two weeks ago a respected team member in the Toronto bombing. Next to me is sitting Jack Ritter, terrorism expert on domestic ground. Jack, do you think the bombs, of whom one exploded, from two weeks ago have anything to do with what is going on tonight?"
"Well Sharon, that is very plausible. The police has not been able to find their only suspect or a motivation for…"
Sophie couldn't hear more. She had the remote clutched to her chest and tears were falling down her cheeks. Her head felt heavy and for a moment she felt lost, not knowing what to do.
"Mom?" Clark asked standing at the entrance of the living room. Eyes puffy from the sleep but worry on his face while he looked at his mother in tears.
"Mom, what is going on?" He asked, but Sophie was not in control yet to answer.
He came over and sat next to her and read the newest headline on the news.
BREAKING NEWS SRU UNDER FIRE BY TERRORISTS 4 INJURED 1 DEAD.
After a while Wordy received a message back from Spike.
On our way to St. Simon. Meet me at the ambulance entrance.
Wordy silently informed Jules that he was going to step out and moved as quiet as possible to the door. However, while opening the door he still noticed Sam's face cringed. Outside Sam's room it looked nothing like a hospital. At the nurse desk was Beth sitting and she was the only person in place. By Sam's door were two officers on guarding. One officer was sitting next to nurse Beth. By each side of the hallway were two more officers. Wordy held his badge in hand while he walked over to the ambulance entrance. There he found more officers keeping guard. Here in the hallway he had a moment to glance outside the window. It was still dark, but there were a mayhem of people wondering on the streets. He recognized them as police officers and special units, but also the media. For the first time this night he thought about Shelly and decided to text her that he was fine and at a safe place. Just when he was finished he heard the sirens of an ambulance coming towards the hospital. The gates openend and the now quiet ambulance drove in. Right away he heard the sirens of another ambulance coming and then more. Wordy stayed at his place giving the doctors who had showed up space and waited in anticipation who would be in there.
End of chapter 10
Foregiveness
'Sam, step back.' Greg said calmly through their mic. Sam was only a few steps in front of him, but it felt as if he was miles out of reach. With his MP5 raised on their subject Greg reached out again to his young teammate.
'He is not hearing you Sam, slow it down'. But Sam didn't listen and took another step towards their subject. Greg heard the steady breathing of Ed and glanced up to his sniper in position to see him calm as ever. He knew as soon as he called Scorpio, Ed would neutralize the subject and it would be all over. In any other case it would be over then, however this situation was completely different. It had only been a few times in his professional career that Greg wasn't sure on what to do next, on what would be right, but this was one of those rare moments. Greg felt the presence of Wordy right next to him and saw Spike and Leah on the other end of the room facing them, facing the subject. Greg knew that Sam, even though unarmed, was safe with all of them around. One wrong move from the subject and Ed would take him out. Greg saw Sam taking another step forward which resulted that the subject took another step backwards. It would not be long before the subject went out of view for Ed. Greg had to do something in order to keep the situation under control. While Sam kept talking to their subject, Greg took a careful step forward and another, until he reached Sam and placed his free hand quietly on the young mans upper arm. He could feel the tension and despair racing through his body while desperately trying to talk the man down. But Greg saw that it didn't do much good and as soon as he saw the subject flicker his armed hand towards Sam he knew what to do. He could only hope he would be forgiven.
'Scorpio' Greg whispered, loud enough for Ed to hear.
So what did you think, still interested in the story? I will work on a new chapter and try to post it asap.
