A/N: I apologize for how long this took. I've been sick, and had a bit of writer's block with this chapter. Luckily, once I sat down to start writing, it all started to flow. It's all starting to really fall into place, and things are about to get ugly.
Regina stared at Emma blankly for a moment, as Emma's words settled in. She swallowed thickly. It couldn't be. She had killed him. She had squeezed his heart until it was nothing but dust. No one has ever survived that before.
"Let me guess, that bit of information confused you a little bit, right? You thought he was dead, right? Squeezed his heart until it was dust. If there weren't more pressing matters at hand, we would be having a much different conversation. As it is, Graham will have to wait. We have to find my son."
Regina's look of surprise changed quickly to one of hatred quickly. Though she wanted nothing more than to conjure up three large fireballs to take out the three annoying people in front of her. She hated to admit, that Emma was right. They needed to find Henry, and as much as Regina despised the woman before her, she might actually need Emma's help. Especially if her mother did in deed have Henry.
"Once this is over."
Emma smirked at Regina, "You have no idea. Until then though, truce." Emma held out her hand to Regina, and waited until Regina reluctantly shook it. "Now, how on Earth could your mother be alive? I pulled her heart from her chest myself, and I watched Graham crush it into dust."
Regina contemplated Emma's words, this time without the shock that had blocked out rational thinking before. "What happened to my mother when Graham crushed her heart?" The words were hard for Regina to say. She might hate her mother, she might not wanting anything to do with her, but the thought that her mother might actually be dead – and that her once thought to be dead ex-lover had caused Cora's death. None of it set with her very well, but she would have to sit that aside for the moment. Right now all that mattered was Henry.
"She turned to dust, and kind of floated away."
Regina's lip curled up. "She's not dead. Trust me. I've crushed enough hearts in my lifetime to know what happens to that person when you crush their heart. They do not turn to dust. They just kind of fall down – dead."
Emma's lip curled into a snarl as she stared at Regina. "Oh believe me, I know, or did you forget that I was with Graham when you killed him?"
"Not now, Swan!" Regina huffed, throwing up a hand to emphasis her point. "Plus, I know my mother. She would never be so vulnerable. She went so far as to nickname herself the Queen of Hearts, she would never keep something so valuable in such an easy to find place, if you will."
Three pairs of eyebrows shot up at that. Ruby glanced between Nikolai and Emma, before looking back at Regina. "What do you mean?"
"I hadn't seen or spoken to my mother for years before I enacted the curse. I had, however, heard rumors. Especially from a joint friend, Miss Swan. You see, Jefferson, he used to make trips to Wonderland for me. He heard things while he was there, and relayed the information to me. It seems that the rumor surrounding the Queen of Hearts wasn't quite the rumor that I had thought it to be."
"Dammit, Regina. You're as bad as Gold is. Just spit it out already!"
"She removed her own heart. If there was one in her chest, then she apparently replaced her own heart with someone else's."
Emma's head fell forward for a moment. "You mean, when Graham thought he was killing Cora, he was actually killing an innocent person?"
Regina nodded, "Dastardly, isn't she?"
"It explains why you're the evil bitch that you turned into." Emma quipped, before turning to Ruby and Nikolai. "I need the two of you to go back to the apartment. Tell Snow, James, and Graham what we just learned. Once Regina and I figure out where Cora might be holding Henry, I'll be in contact. Be ready to leave at a moments notice."
They both nodded, before leaning in to hug Emma goodbye. Nikolai lingered for a moment, sending a nasty glare in Regina's direction, before leaning in toward Emma's ear. "I don't trust her. I swore to Graham I would do everything humanly possible to keep you alive, so be careful. Please. If something happens to you, he will never forgive me."
Emma nodded, "I will. You be careful too, Nikolai."
He offered her a smile, before turning to follow Ruby from the large, white mansion.
Emma turned back to Regina, "Alright. So, where would your mother hold Henry?"
Henry grunted loudly as he pulled against the bindings on his wrist. His nose wrinkled as he attempted to pull one of his wrists free from the rope. It was at that moment that he wished he hadn't snuck out. Not only did he realize how stupid – how foolish of a mission that it had been, but now he was stuck down in Regina's mausoleum and no one knew. That wasn't entirely true. His grandparents had probably noticed his absence, and Emma might know by now, but there was no way that they would figure out where Cora was keeping him. No, if anyone was going to stop Cora, it had to be him. He was the only one that truly knew what Cora had planned, and he couldn't say with any certainty that if Regina knew the truth that she would stop her mother.
"Why do these have to be so tight!" He grunted, before slamming his fists against his knees. There was no way that he was going to get the bindings off without some sort of help.
Henry knew that his best bet was to stand up and search for something to help him with the bindings, or even to search for a way out of the mausoleum. Taking a deep breath, Henry planted his feet firmly on the cement floor, his knees bent slightly to help shove him upward. He remembered seeing movies where the hero had to do something similar to get help, and remembered that the hero placed his back hard against the wall to help shimmy himself upward. Henry clenched his eyes closed tightly, and shoved backward with his feet to ensure that his back was taut against the wall. The concrete was rough against his thin shirt, as he started shoving himself upward. Ignoring the pain of the burning in his back, Henry kept his shoulders moving. Right then left. Upward until he was able to shove himself off the wall and stand on his own two feet.
He knew that his back would be sore for a while, probably red and bruised, but it was something that he could deal with once he stopped Cora. With the pain pushed to the back of his mind, Henry started to search the dark room. As he glanced around the room, he didn't notice anything helpful. At least nothing that would help with the rope bindings. He also knew that Cora could return anytime with a simple flash of purple smoke, and find him upright and looking for a way out of the mausoleum. With a sigh, Henry gave up on trying to get the rope off his wrists, Emma would take care of that when he found her. Instead, he made a move toward the only way out of the room, and hoped that Cora wasn't just sitting out in the mausoleum waiting for him to try to escape.
Snow pulled out her phone and dialed Emma's number, all the while hoping that her daughter had remembered to take her phone with her. After a couple of rings, she heard the other end pick up. Quickly, she handed the phone to Graham, unsure if her daughter was still angry with her.
"Em. Hey, look I was talking to your parents, telling them the rest of the story and I think we might have a problem."
Graham's face paled quickly, as he swallowed through the lump that seemed to have form from nowhere. He nodded his head, and hung up quickly.
"Graham, what's the matter?" Snow asked, concern lacing her voice, as her hand reached out to grip Graham's.
"Emma is still with Regina. She didn't have time to talk, but she said that Nikolai and Ruby are on their way over here, and that they would give us the details."
Snow nodded, as James sat down beside her. "Okay, but that doesn't explain the look on your face."
"It was the way Emma spoke. Like her world was crumbling down around her – not to mention the fact that she's working with Regina."
At that, Snow's eyes widened slightly. She knew that Emma and Regina's relationship was practically non-existent, which begged the question, what in the world would make the two of them team up. Snow's eyes drifted close as the answer flashed before her eyes. There was only one reason that Emma and Regina would work together, and that reason was a little psychopathic with a whole lot of sociopathic tendencies, and it caused Snow's heart to clench thinking that Henry might be stuck with that woman.
Nikolai pulled Ruby closer to him as they ran. His hand clasped tightly in her's. There wasn't anyway that he could deny what he felt for Ruby. Not with them standing so close together. Not with his bare hand clasping hers so tightly. The electric pulses that shot up from his palm was more than enough to prove that there was more than just attraction between them, and it scared him. He had never had anyone in his life, not like Ruby. Sure, he had grown up with a family, which put him at an advantage over his brother and Emma, but after his family had died, Nikolai had no one. Not one person by his side, until he had stumbled upon Graham and eventually Emma in the Enchanted Forest. Thanks to his brother and Emma, he had the possibility to fall in love.
"Red?" A thick accented voice called out.
Both Nikolai and Ruby pulled up short to a stop. Nikolai glanced around, but saw no one familiar, but the gasp that came from his right proved that Ruby had spotted a familiar face.
"It can't be." She whispered, as she pulled herself in closer to Nikolai's side.
Nikolai turned in the direction that she was looking, and bit his lip to keep from laughing. It couldn't be true, could it? He had heard rumors, but didn't believe that they were true.
"Killian." Ruby whispered, as she slowly pulled away from Nikolai and walked closer to the man standing before them. "I thought you were dead."
Killian smiled softly, one of his eyebrows arching high as he brushed his thumb over Ruby's cheek. "And I thought the same of you, love. As it turns out, I found someone able to help me get my revenge on the crocodile."
Ruby took a step back, her head reaching out behind her. Nikolai, without a second thought, grabbed her hand carefully in his own and allowed her to pull him forward. "You let me think that you were dead, so that you could get revenge on Rumpelstiltskin?"
Killian nodded, "Yes, love."
Ruby shook her head, "Don't call me that. Just – don't." Tears started to well in her eyes. "I have something important to do..." Suddenly, something hit her. "Wait, how did you get here?"
"Excuse me?" Killian asked, as her crossed his arms over his chest.
"You haven't been in Storybrooke, Killian. You never came over with the rest of us, which means that you were in the Enchanted Forest. How did you get here?"
Killian chuckled, "Ah. Always knew you were a smart one, Red. Alas, I cannot divulge that information, as it is not my information to share. What I can tell you, is that I should be the least of your worries."
Ruby's eyes widened, as realization dawned on her. "You're helping her, aren't you? You're helping Cora!"
