Well, I WAS going to have a Ruby & Sapphire chapter until I realized that the idea that I wanted to use for that was already going to be used almost word for word in Destiny. And I haven't thought about a Ruby & Sapphire segment substitute. Yet. So, here's a chapter that took an hour to make. Enjoy!
Primary: Green & Blue.
Regret:
Pallet Town, 5:30 am…
Green woke up from his sleep when his Pokégear vibrated ever so violently against the wooden table it was placed upon. He groggily reached over and checked the time. 5:30… so he had 2.5 hours of sleep. Not the most restful, but far from the worst he had. Green's frowned when he noticed that Blue had left him a voice mail.
'She wants to talk now?' he thought as he played the voice mail. 'And she couldn't have waited until morning, why?'
A moment later, Blue's voice came from the Pokégear, but devoid of the usual cheerfulness. Instead, she sounded very… sad.
"Green, have I ever told you how much I value our friendship?"
Green's sleepiness disappeared and he quickly sat up. This was very odd. Blue had never said anything like this before. She did have a lot of pent up sadness and depression, but she never expressed it. The fact that she was telling him her thoughts was very worrying.
Green tried to call her, but she didn't answer. He tried again, but still nothing. Perhaps she wanted to see him in person? He quickly got up to his feet and headed towards his grandfather's lab, where Blue would have slept.
When he reached Blue's room on the second floor of the lab, he first pressed his ear against the door to see if he could hear anything. There were no movements. He gave a quick knock, but nothing. He opened the door and didn't find anyone inside.
Green checked his Pokégear's voice mail. Apparently, Blue had never actually called him. She had just sent him a voice mail. Hmm… There was one thing he could do. He headed back towards his house to get someone to help.
He arrived at his place very quickly and upon silently unlocking the door, he went upstairs towards his bedroom. Ordinarily, he wouldn't wake her up, especially after what she went through. But this… may be an emergency of all emergencies.
He soon got to his bedroom and spotted her sleeping silently on his bed. He quickly approached her and tapped her on the shoulder.
"Crystal, wake up."
The girl grunted but remained asleep. So Green called a little louder. And tapped her a bit more. The Johto Dex Holder soon groggily opened her eyes.
"… Green?" she mumbled out as she tried her best to wake up.
"Sorry for waking you up," Green said. "But I really need your help."
Crystal groaned as she forced her tired body to sit up without putting any pressure on her injured leg. "What… what is it?"
"I need you to trace the source of a voice mail," Green said. "Do you think you can do it?"
Crystal thought for a few seconds. "… I think I can… But isn't Blue better than me?"
"Blue is missing. But she sent me a voice mail, and I need to find her."
Crystal nodded. "I'll do my best."
Several minutes later, Green gently set Crystal down on her wheelchair and pushed her towards the table where her laptop was. Crystal booted the computer and took the time to rub her eyes to fight off the sleepiness.
Once the computer booted up, Crystal opened a variety of programs and prepared to trace the voice mail. Just as the preparations were complete, Green's Pokégear vibrated once more.
"It's a second message," Green muttered.
Crystal quickly plugged the Pokégear into her computer and began to work.
"I really do appreciate your company. But is that feeling mutual? … That's a stupid question, isn't it? I know you don't feel the same way…"
Crystal frowned at the message, but rapidly typed at her computer for a few seconds.
"Okay. The signal is coming from northwest of here," she said. "I don't know exactly where, though. I need to trace the subsequent voice mails to get the exact location."
Green glanced at the time on the Pokégear. "Well, it seems that this message came exactly 30 minutes after the first one."
"Then maybe it comes once every 30 minutes…" Crystal muttered. "In that case…"
Green knew what she was about to suggest. And he couldn't allow it. "No. Crystal, you're staying here."
"I have to go," the girl said. "I can't trace the mails any better than right now if I stay here. I have to get closer and closer towards the source to pinpoint the location."
Green sighed. "… Damn it…" He looked at Crystal's leg tightly wrapped in a cast. "… Sorry."
"It's okay, really," Crystal said. "Okay. Let's go then."
…
An hour later, Green and Crystal arrived in Route 43 as the 4th message arrived.
"I can't imagine what my life would've been like if it wasn't for you and Red. You saved my life, Green. But I don't know if you would do it intentionally."
"Got it," Crystal said as she stared at her laptop's monitor screen. "She's in this route, around… 300 meters to the north."
Green took a look around the route. "What happened here?"
Crystal peeked over her senior from behind him. "… There's not supposed to be a river here," she muttered. "Did Lake of Rage flood or something? … Wait, didn't Sapphire say that ShadowNet HQ was in this route?"
Green slowly nodded. "Blue must've done this…" He tapped his Charizard. "Fly low and slow. Keep your eyes open for Blue."
The Charizard did as told and slowly swooped down. Crystal held onto her senior with one hand, her laptop with the other and did her best to scan the route below for any hints of Blue.
The search continued for about 25 minutes, until Crystal's laptop emitted a noise.
"She's around here. 20 meters!"
The Charizard stopped moving. Green hopped off and landed on the ground below. He quickly scanned left and right, but there was nothing around him, except… a pillar of dirt and rocks that reached around 10 meters into the air. … That must be it then. There's no other possible location, unless Blue was buried in the ground.
Green ordered Crystal to keep looking around in case he missed something and began to climb the rock pillar. Crystal obeyed her senior and remained seated on the Charizard.
As Green climbed, he saw something on the side of the pillar. Something red… blood? Green climbed even faster. His suspicion grew around the top of the pillar, as he could hear something faint from above. Like rapid gasps… Green quickly signaled Crystal as he finished climbing. The Johto Dex Holder got the Charizard to fly up.
Green saw a large boulder on the top of the rock pillar, and there was a lot of blood flowing from around it. He quickly ran towards it and just as he moved around the boulder, he found her. Blue.
Blue was leaning against the boulder while she kept a hand around her left shoulder. Her hat had tilted down so it was impossible to see her eyes. She was gasping for air very rapidly while she trembled in agony per every heartbeat. Green saw a lot of blood flowing from between her neck and left shoulder, dying her entire shirt crimson red. Blue was clutching her wound it seemed, trying to stop the bleeding. But it was futile.
"Blue…" Green muttered, horrified to know that Blue's death was imminent. She had lost too much blood…
The girl seemed to jump upon hearing his voice. She managed to tilt her head back to look at him. "… G – Green?"
"Blue… what… what happened? How did this…"
Blue suddenly trembled even more violently. "You… you do care…"
Green knelt in front of her and grabbed her free hand. "Blue… of course I care…"
Tears began to fall from her eyes as she held his hand as hard as she could manage. "I – I'm so sorry… … I… should've told you… earlier…"
Green took off Blue's hat for her so that he could see her face clearly. "I'm sorry Blue. I should have treated you better. I should have taken better care of you. You deserved so much better."
Blue shook her head. "N – No… … Green… I should've… told you… I… love you…"
Green felt his own tears falling from his eyes. He gently wiped away the tears rolling down Blue's cheeks and put a hand on her cheek. Her skin was so cold…
"Blue… I love you too," he muttered. The memories of how he treated Blue for the past several years suddenly flashed across his mind. He had never said anything nice to her. He always treated her as if she was annoying. "I'm so sorry… for everything I've done."
Blue closed her eyes. "… I – I'm so happy… … All these years… I thought… you hated me… … I thought… you didn't care about me…" She managed to faintly open her eyes again. "Green… forgive me… I was… so foolish… … I was afraid… that I'd never see you again…"
Green's Pokégear suddenly vibrated as Blue's fifth automated message reached him.
"I know you think I'm annoying. For what it's worth, I'm sorry. You probably won't believe me."
Green looked at Blue again. "… You were never annoying…"
Blue managed a faint smile. "… Liar… B – But at least…" she trailed off and started to choke. A look of indescribable agony flashed across her face and her grip on Green's hand significantly weakened.
"Blue? Blue! Stay with me," Green said hastily. "You have to hang in there."
Blue managed to shake her head. She was gasping for air even more rapidly now, as her circulatory and respiratory systems were shutting down. "N – No… … I – I know you… care for me… That's… what's important…" Her eyes slowly closed on their own and her grip on Green's hand vanished. "Thank you… … I – I can die… happily…"
"Blue, please," Green said as he desperately held onto her hand. "You can't leave me like this."
A final tear fell from her closed eyes. "… Sorry…"
Blue's head fell forwards as her strength vanished. Green watched in horror as Blue's hand slid off of her wound lifelessly and she ceased to breathe. Her body remained motionless while slumped against the boulder.
"… Blue…" Green muttered as he felt his tears streaming down his cheeks. He gently pulled her body close for a final embrace. … It was also the first time he ever embraced her. "You deserved so much more… I'm so sorry…" He held her close and kissed her on her cold lips. He held her tight for a few minutes, as he didn't want to let her go. But he had to. Blue was gone…
Green glanced backwards. Crystal was still seated on the Charizard, crying silently with her hand clamped over her mouth. She had witnessed everything, but did her absolute best to stay silent so that her two seniors would have a private moment.
Green gently lifted Blue's lifeless body onto his arms. He stared at her peaceful expression for a while, as he realized that he had never seen her look happy or peaceful before. She always looked a little sad, even when she was feigning joy. Now he knew why. And he wished that he had known earlier. He always thought that regret was a stupid thing, but right now, he regretted a lot of things. But at the very least, he made her happy in her final moments. She deserved that much at least.
While still holding on to her body, Green climbed onto the Charizard. He had to take Blue's body back to the lab and give her a proper funeral. Those close to her had to say their final goodbyes.
…
Next day…
…
Green knocked on the door to Crystal's room in the lab. The door opened shortly after and Crystal appeared in his vision, still on her wheelchair. She still looked distraught. And rightfully so.
Gold had given his life to defeat the remaining ShadowNet forces, and also as an atonement for what he did to Crystal. The girl had found him just before he died, but the time she was given was not nearly enough for her to get everything off of her chest. Gold wasn't able to speak at that point either. As such, understandably, Crystal was faring much worse for her loved one's death than Green.
Crystal started to tear up again and Green gave her a gentle pat on the shoulder. He was there when Gold died. He was with Crystal. And he had returned the favor to Crystal by remaining perfectly silent, thus giving the girl her last private moments with the boy she loved.
Crystal started to sob and Green gave her a gentle embrace. The girl buried her face into his shoulder as she cried for a few minutes, and Green simply let her get her pent up feelings out of her system.
Eventually, she calmed down enough and Green pulled back to look at her in the eyes.
"Crystal… I know it hurts. Believe me," he said quietly. The girl simply nodded. "But you can't just sulk over his death like this. There's a really powerful enemy still out there. If we don't fight, then Blue and Gold would have died for nothing. We have to fight, for their sake."
"For… for Blue?" Crystal mumbled.
"And for Gold," Green said. "So come. Help me prepare everyone for the final battle."
Crystal let out a shuddering breath. "… Yes… For those left behind… and for those who gave their lives…" She looked into her senior's eyes. "And Green… you have to move past Blue's death too. We all need you more than you need me."
Green silently nodded. Crystal sighed at the sudden thought of the lost ones. "… You made her happy, Green. … After all these years… she was finally happy. That's the important thing…"
"That was thanks to you," he said. "If you didn't help me, I wouldn't have gotten to Blue fast enough. And she would've died thinking that I hated her. So thank you, Crystal, for all your help."
Crystal nodded. After another sigh, she forced a faint smile and extended a hand towards her senior. "We have to help each other move on…"
Green understood and shook her hand. "Yes." He stood up straight and patted her on the shoulder again. "Come Crystal. And let's make Blue and Gold proud."
Does this chapter seem familiar? Well it should. Welcome to DE's SA phase, which is the main part of DE's evil phase. The ideas from original SA plans that never got used now have a home, because clearly, I never made a story that just used up those leftover ideas. That'd be ridiculous and crazy. What, the existing SA is chronologically #1, and its sequel is #2, so the original SA plans would be… #0? That's ridiculous!
DE's evil phase will end (for now) when its SA phase ends. And the SA phase will last a total of 2 chapters, including this one. So the darkness is going to end, folks! There's light at the end of the tunnel! If you liked the evilness, don't worry. There are more tunnels, I'm sure. If you like the bright and happy chapters, they're coming soon!
Now this chapter exists because this was actually the hardest choice I made for SA. Until the day of uploading SA #028: Final Run, Blue's death scene had two options. At the very last moment, I picked the option that gave higher chance of SA2 existing. Green's chain of thoughts towards Blue is an important piece of the SA2 previews. If Green got to Blue before she died, then he wouldn't think of her nearly as much, which would lose a lot of meaning to Green finding Blue at the very end of SA. But that doesn't mean that the death scene itself was better. I actually think that this was the better death scene.
Next up: Diamond & Platinum. My favorite Dex Holder and the second favorite pairing, under the SA-class doom hammer once again. But it shouldn't be too bad, as the scene that had Diamond dying was shown in SA itself, and Platinum was never meant to die in the original plans. So no deaths in the next chapter. I'm holding the SA-class doom hammer, not the Destiny-class doom hammer. There's a profound difference.
