I don't own Twilight

Set Backs

As we ate, Edward and I relaxed and the conversation became lighter. After everything that had happened, it felt good to smile.

"With the way we are inhaling these burgers, you would think we hadn't eaten in years," Edward joked as we polished off the end of our meals.

"Well, Renee is still cooking, so I have to enjoy good food while I can," I said with a smirk as I dunked a fry in some ketchup.

"Oh come on, her food can't be that bad," Edward said.

"I can ask her to make you something, and you can see for yourself?" I said, "I know she would be happy to do it."

"No that's okay," Edward said quickly, "I don't want her to go to any trouble."

"Uh-huh, yeah, sure," I replied as I rolled my eyes.

"Do you want dessert?" Edward asked, clearly trying to steer the conversation in another direction. Luckily for him he picked something that actually did distract me, because I wanted chocolate.

"I kind of want a brownie," I said.

"Okay," Edward said. Our waitress came by a few minutes later and we both ordered a brownie. Our parents were still in the middle of what looked to be a pretty in-depth conversation, so we figured they wouldn't care if we ordered dessert.

"So how is your physical therapist?" Edward asked while we waited for our brownies.

"I have met Charlotte twice but she seems nice," I replied.

"Dive she give you that sling today?" Edward asked as he looked at the black material keeping my arm snug against my body.

"Yep," I replied, "So, how is your physical therapist?"

"Peter seems nice, but I think he is going be kind of intense," Edward said with a slight look of fear in his eyes.

"I'm sure it will be fine," I said.

"Yeah, you are probably right," Edward said, "Oh hey, Peter has a picture of your physical therapist on his desk."

"Charlotte?" I asked.

"Yeah," Edward said with a nod of his head.

"Interesting," I said as I tried to think if I had seen any picture in Charlotte's office. I didn't think I had, but then again wasn't paying that close of attention.

"Do you think they are a couple?" Edward asked.

"Could be," I replied, "I guess we will just have to do what we can to figure it out."

"Physical therapy just got a little more interesting," Edward said with smirk.

"Definitely," I agreed with a smile. I needed some water, and I noticed our waitress walking to another booth with a tray full of drinks, but she disappeared into another corner of the restaurant.

Seconds later, a loud crash filled the air. My head seemed to fog over and I froze as the restaurant disappeared before my eyes, and a classroom appeared. The sound of gunshots filled my head, and I instinctively slid to ground as if to take cover.

"Edward!" I screamed.

"Bella!" he screamed back. Arms surrounded me, but I knew they weren't Edward's. I tried to fight them, but they held on tight.

"Bella," a deep voice next to me said as I continued to fight, "Bella, calm down."

"Bella please," another, higher voice said, "It's okay, sweetheart."

The arms around me started rubbing my back soothingly and it calmed me. I blinked rapidly and the restaurant came back into focus. It took me a second, but I finally realized that the arms belonged to my mother and father. I looked past them as saw that the whole restaurant was now staring at me and Edward. Edward appeared to be in the same condition I was, he was still in his wheelchair but he was pale and terrified.

"What…what happened?" I asked.

"The waitress dropped some glasses," Carlisle said as he rubbed Edward's shoulder. Esme, who looked close to tears, was gently stroking Edward's hair.

"The noise was so loud," I said, "It sounded like…like..."

"Gunshots," Edward finished, and I nodded.

"We should get out of here," my mom said as she looked around and noticed everyone was still staring at us. My parents helped me up, Charlie and Carlisle quickly paid the bill, and we all made our way out of the restaurant. It felt good to get outside in the cool air. I took some deep breaths and felt myself settle just a little bit more.

"How are you doing?" my dad asked.

"Better," I replied.

"You really gave us a scare kiddo," my dad said before kissing the top of my head.

"I'm sorry," I replied.

"Oh Bella, it's not your fault," my mom said, "You went through something horrible, and that is going to affect you for a while."

"I actually wanted to talk to the two of you about this," Carlisle said.

"Talk about what?" Edward asked.

"Renee is right. What you went through was a nightmare, and that isn't something you just get over," Carlisle said, and I could tell he was slipping into doctor mode. "I think that you two need to talk to someone."

Edward and I looked at each other and then nodded because we had both already come to that conclusion.

"The school sent a grief counselor to the hospital while you where there, but I sent her away. You two were in and out of consciousness so much that it would have been nearly impossible for you to actually talk to her. I also knew that if you did end up needing to talk to someone, you would need more than just a grief counselor," Carlisle said.

"Do you know of anyone we could talk to?" I asked.

"Yes, actually I do," Carlisle said, "Hold on one minute. I have her card in my car." Carlisle walked over to his car and after digging around for a minute he came back with a business card and handed it to me.

"Dr. Kate Denali," I said as I looked at the card.

"Yes. I asked around, and she is supposed to be the best," Carlisle said.

"Thank you," I replied.

"Do you think Bella and I could go together?" asked Edward, "At least, at first?"

"I don't think that would be a problem," Carlisle said, "I will give Dr. Denali a call when we get home and set up an appointment for the two of you."

"Thank you Carlisle," I said

"Yes, thank you," my mom said as she wrapped her arm around me.

"It's no problem," Carlisle said, "Now we should get going so I can get home to make that call."

"Alright, we will talk to you soon," my mom said.

"Goodbye Bella," Edward said as his parents started to wheel him away.

"Goodbye Edward," I replied with a small wave. My parents led me over to our car and we got in and drove home. Once we were home I went upstairs to lie down. It had been long day and I felt drained. I closed my eyes and drifted off, however my nap was interrupted a short while later when the phone began to ring.

It stopped ringing, so I figured one of my parents had answered it. My suspicions were confirmed when my dad came upstairs a few minutes later.

"That was Carlisle," he said as plopped down on my bed.

"What did he say?" I asked.

"He said he called Dr. Denali and made an appointment for you and Edward," my dad said.

"When is it?" I asked nervously. I knew I needed to talk to someone but the thought of talking about that day frightened me.

"The day after tomorrow," my dad answered.

"Okay," I replied quietly.

"I know you are nervous," my dad said, "but this will be a good thing."

"I know," I replied.

"Okay, I will let you get some rest," my dad said as he stood up. Once he left the room I tried to close my eyes and rest, but all I could do was worry about my upcoming appointment. My dad said it would be a good thing, and I really hoped he was right.
