Author's Note: It's been far too long since I updated this story. A very close friend of mine (you know who you are) finally convinced me to get my ass back in gear and update. By the way, they are staying at Bobby's, I noticed that I accidentally said hotel instead of Bobby's. Just so you're all aware. I haven't written for a while, so I'm not sure how this is going to turn out. Hopefully you guys will like it as much as you seemed to like the other chapters *crosses fingers* Here we go… Enjoy!
Warning: Swearing
Disclaimer: I'm gonna do this again because I don't own anything.
I'm the Big Brother Now
Chapter 10: Bye Bye
Date: August 2nd
Kristen's POV
I shot up from the couch panting and screaming. I frantically looked around. This isn't my house. Where am I? Where are my boys? "Tanner! Eric!" There was a small crash upstairs and next thing I knew; a man was pounding down the stairs.
"Kristen! What wrong? What happened?"
Sam. I felt tears sting the back of my eyes as I remembered everything that happened. Dean. The hospital. Sam. The monsters. Tammy. Eric… I reached up and felt tears soak my cheeks.
"W-why did this happen to us, Sam? "My voice came out much weaker than I would have liked.
Sam's face fell. He seemed to be battling with himself in his head. He came towards me and sat down. "I don't know. I wish I could say that I do, but… I can't." He dragged a hand down his face.
Without thinking, I asked a very personal question, "Why do you do this?"
He looked back at me with hints of confusion swirling in his eyes.
"Why do you help strangers? Hunt monsters that should only exist in kids' nightmares? Risk your life and your brother's?" His eyes seemed to cloud over, the way the sky changes before a bad storm… "Sam? If that hits too close to home, you don't have to answer. I'm just a stranger. Someone who happened to cross paths with you. I understand."
Sam sighed and scrubbed a hand down his face. "It's a long story. Very. Very. Long."
"You seem to say that a lot," I tried to smile but it came out looking like more of a grimace.
Sam laughed a bit, "Alright. I'll tell you." With that, I heard of all the crazy and impossible things Sam and Dean had seen and done.
Castiel's POV
I looked down at Dean as he slept. Oh Dean… Do you have any idea how much we all care for you? Sam would do anything for you. I think he's really enjoying you while you're so young, giving you the childhood you deserved, but I think he also misses you. The older you I mean. I sighed.
You're giving him what he also never thought he'd get though. A family, a son.
I heard a creak on the floorboards. I turned my head and saw Sam standing there. "Ah, Sam. You're back. I have to speak to you. About what Dean said while you were gone."
"Whaddya mean? Did he wake up?"
I glanced back at Dean when his eyelids fluttered. "Twice, yes. I think it's best if talk we talk in the hall."
Curious, but quietly, Sam followed me out the door.
Looking at Sam, I saw that he was worried about what I would say. "Have you told Dean anything about John or Mary?"
"What?" He seemed taken aback. "No, why?"
I explained what Dean had told me.
"D-does that mean he might be returning to normal? Before the year is up?" Sam's eyes glimmered with small slivers of hope.
"I'm sorry Sam. That curse is going to last one year, there is no shortcut. No cure. Just one year. I think some of his memories are coming to him a way a child's might. Through dreams, and games. It's likely there will be more situations like this and you need to be prepared to hear things like that." The hunter's eyes fell back to his feet.
He nodded.
Sam's POV
"Cas, do you think there is any way you could make Kristen forget about all this? At least alter it?"
"I think so, yes. What about her son though? I can't exactly make her forget about him."
I felt my face fall. I felt so guilty… "Can you make her think that Tammy wanted drug money and it just went very wrong? Dean was just a kid that she happened to see and she liked him. That's it. No demons, no monsters, no Winchesters. Please?"
He nodded stiffly. I'll go do that." Cas turned to walk downstairs, but I grabbed his shoulder.
"I want to at least apologize… for what happened to Eric."
The angel looked at me sternly. "Sam. What happened to them was not your fault. The demon that possessed the young girl was already after the boys. Possibly because of their father. It's not quite clear, but I know that what happened to Eric was not your fault." Castiel pulled his arm away from me and walked down the stairs to the living room.
Kristen's POV
I was sitting on Bobby's couch holding Tanner in my arms as he slept restlessly. Oh Tanny… How will we go on? Especially now… now that we know about the things that lurk in the dark. Demons, ghosts, monsters. And without Eric, my poor, poor baby… Absentmindedly, I felt a few tears fall and hit the back of my hand.
"Kristen." I was startled out of my thoughts when the angel suddenly spoke. "I'm sorry for what I'm about to do. But I promise, it's better this way."
I tightened my grip on Tanner, "What the hell do you mean by that?" I tried to pull away as he reached his hand out towards me.
"Kristen, please." His eyes were full of remorse and pleading. "You're not going to remember anything about what has happened since you've met the Winchesters. Same for your son. You'll remember Dean as a patient that you took a particular liking to. Eric's death will be nothing more than an unfortunate consequence of Tammy trying to steal money for drugs. No more monsters, demons, ghosts, none of that."
My hands shook. "W-what about Sam? Will I remember him?"
"He is just Dean's caring father. A mere stranger you met."
Sighing, I looked back down at my son. "Okay. Does it hurt?"
"Absolutely painless. You'll fall right to sleep. And when you wake up, new memories." I nodded.
"I want to say goodbye," I said reluctantly.
I hugged Bobby first, "Thank you for letting us stay here." The gruff man nodded solemnly in reply.
Then came Cas, "Thank you Castiel," he also nodded in reply.
Then Sam. "Goodbye Sam." He had tears in his eyes.
"See ya Kristen, thanks for taking care of Dean."
"My pleasure."
Last came Dean, sweet innocent little Deanie. "You're gonna be real strong huh buddy?" He sniffled and just latched onto my neck. "I know, it's gonna be okay."
"Let's at least go back to my house so I wake up there." The angel nodded and he took Tanner and I home.
After we were both in bed, Castiel touched our foreheads and that was the last of the Winchesters for me.
Author's Note: Dear lord. I apologize for how long I took. I think I'm falling back into the swing of writing. More to come J
