Chapter 10: Surprise!
Callie walked through the halls of SGMW with an extra skip in her step. She had been trying and trying for years to dream of what today would feel like, and now she knew she had almost definitely failed in her attempts. The amount of sheer joy and excitement coursing through her veins was practically unimaginable. A smile was permanently plastered across her face as she walked with a bounce in her step and a song on her lips towards her office to grab her lab coat. Tonight was the night she had waited for since the day she met Dr. Arizona Robbins. Tonight was going to be, hopefully, her very last first date.
Once she had her lab coat sleeves rolled above her elbow, she headed down to the pit. She couldn't chance being even a minute late tonight, so she had cancelled all of her surgeries and volunteered to run the pit for the day. She also made sure that Dr. Choi was on call in case any ortho cases came in that had even the slightest chance to run past 5:00. Arizona wasn't on the board today and had called the night before to tell them she wasn't available to be on call at all. They had taken every precaution to avoid having the hospital ruin their evening. And, oh the evening Callie had planned. Tonight, she sighed to herself, tonight Arizona is mine and I am hers and it will be perfect.
The day started off slowly, and even though the excitement of her first date with Arizona never faded, the clock seemed to slow down and soon she found herself staring at it thinking of all the things she had to do before she went to pick up Arizona at 7:30. Her pen drummed against the counter to the beat of the clock as checklist after checklist ran through Callie's mind. Soon, the nerves started to set in. She wasn't worried about things going wrong, but suddenly she was overwhelmed with nervousness. She only had once chance to make tonight perfect, and Arizona deserved perfect.
"28 year old female, found on the corner of 4th and Vickers trying to hail a taxi. Vitals are stable but she has several lacerations on her face and neck as well as contusions along her right side. BP is 115 over 75..." the EMT's voice caught Callie off guard. 4th and Vickers... Arizona's apartment was off of 4th and Vickers. Callie shot up from her desk and raced over to the stretcher where the woman's head was covered by the neck brace. She anxiously looked down, imagining the worse when a set of familiar piercing green eyes found hers. The crazy red hair falling over the side of the stretcher finally caught Callie's eye and her anxiety faded. "Kimberly?" She asked, timidly. "Kim, can you hear me?"
The panicked woman's eyes darted to Callie's begging for comfort or explanation.
"Kim, you're at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital and we're going to take really good care of you, okay?" Callie grabbed the clipboard from the EMT and continued to follow them through the ER. Kim grabbed for her hand and squeezed it in terror as the EMTs led her away from Callie. "Bed 2!" She paused, looking around her. "Brookes! Go check bed 2! Her name's Kim and she's scared. I want her face cleaned up... Call Dr. Sloan for a consult!" Callie paused and put her hand on her hip. "Now, Brookes! MOVE!" The intern jumped and started her power walk over to Kim's bed. Callie let out a deep breath and ran her fingers through her hair… today just got a little bit more interesting.
After taking a minute to gather her thoughts and decide whether or not to tell Arizona that her ex was in the emergency room, Callie took a deep breath and grabbed Kim's chart. She decided to not say anything to Arizona. Technically, she shouldn't discuss her patients with anyone… especially anyone who wasn't a doctor at the hospital that day or on call. Arizona wouldn't be mad… no, she would understand.
"Hello, Kimberly," Callie began professionally. "My name is Dr. Torres, and I'm in charge of your care today. Brookes tells me you're in a lot of pain." Callie looked up for an answer.
"How did you know my name?" Kim asked with confusion written on her face.
"It says it on your chart," Callie said hesitantly.
"No, before… you knew my name," panic leaked through her voice. "How?!"
"It's okay," Callie looked up as her heart monitor started to beep. "Hey, calm down," Callie sat down beside Kim's bed. "I met you the other night at the bar…" Callie's voice trailed off. When she didn't receive any answer, she continued. "With Arizona…?"
Kim's eyes widened as her memory finally registered her doctor's face. "Oh! Crap! You were with Zona! Right… You and that other guy were her guard dogs."
Callie snorted. "I guess so," she said simply. "So, that pain?" Callie was trying very hard to remain professional and calm. She couldn't let the fact that she knew this woman had slept with Arizona and cheated on her affect how she was treated. She was a doctor, she was better than that. She would fix her up and send her on her way.
"Yeah, my whole right side hurts… I think I fell," Kim said with a tinge of confusion. "Like, down some stairs maybe?" She rubbed her head. "I don't really remember."
Callie's eyes widened as she stood up to take a look. Bruises were spreading all across her side and as she felt around she could feel two broken ribs, a fractured hip, and a possible break along her femur. She stood up and started writing her observations down on Kim's chart. "Yeah, I bet you're in a lot of pain. We'll start you on some pain meds and I want scans of your leg, your hip, and your ribcage. I'll need them to confirm but I think you have some small breaks," she gave her perfected encouraging smile that she gave to all patients when giving a diagnosis. She reached out and softly touched Kim's face where Brookes had placed bandages in an effort to stop the blood from spilling from her cuts. As she leaned closer, the smell of hard liquor hit her like a brick wall. Callie coughed as she leaned back and pulled her gloves off. "You said you fell?" Callie asked calmly.
"Yeah, I think," Kim's brow furrowed in confusion as she reached to remember the afternoon that had led her to the ER that day.
"Right. Well, I'm going to have some tests run and I want to get you up to CT to check out your head. It looks like you had a pretty bad spill. Take some time though to relax and I'll have Brookes back in here in a few minutes."
"Thank you," Kim's voice trailed away. "Can you find my friend for me? Uhm... Elaine Thomas," she paused, "her name's Elaine. She's a nurse here.
"Sure thing. I'll be back," she added calmly as she drew the curtain around her newest patient. She glanced at the clock as she walked away, anger rippling through her every step. She was starting to piece together what she thought happened, and she wasn't happy about it. Arizona's ex who had cheated on her suddenly shows up in Seattle and kisses her at first sight. Now, she's in her emergency room, drunk after falling down stairs at Arizona's building. It didn't take much to put two and two together. Kim had come back for Arizona. She slammed Kim's chart down on the nurse's station. "Page Dr. Brookes, Dr. Sloan, and a nurse, Ms. Elaine Thomas," Callie ordered.
"Right away, Dr. Torres."
Callie marched away with a huff as the seconds slowly ticked away until she could finally leave.
Elaine found her way to Kim's side and began to prove to be more of a nuisance than anything else. She countered everything Callie prescribed, always noting some condition she swore her friend had. And she wouldn't stop complaining about the stitches that Kim had received. Callie had to admit that they were borderline awful... she had no idea what happened; she knew Mark could do better work than that. It didn't excuse Elaine's behavior, though and she was one comment away from losing her cool with the nurse.
"Elaine, I am asking you for the final time to either leave or to stop prohibiting us from doing our job," Callie said sternly.
"She isn't drunk, though!" Elaine shouted.
Kim's face grew red as she watched on without saying a word.
"Yes, she is, Elaine, and we can't do anything else until she sobers up," Brookes added hopefully.
"You people aren't listening!" Elaine shouted.
"Okay, I've had enough!" Callie shouted, her eyes watching as the last few minutes before the clock struck 5 signaling the end of her shift ticked away. "Elaine, you are dismissed and if you so much as open your mouth between here and that door," she shouted pointing at the door leading to the main sector of the hospital, "I will report you to the board for punitive damages done to this patient!" Callie stared down the young nurse before switching her focus to Kim, "and you need to stop hiding behind your friend and start being honest about your history, or it will only lead to you getting more hurt!"
Kim nodded dumbly as she crumbled into her hospital bed.
"Now, would somebody please find Dr. Sloan!" Callie shouted so the entire ER would hear.
Brookes jumped, "on my way!" She said nervously as she bounced out of the pit to go find the surprisingly absent surgeon.
Callie slammed Kim's chart down as Elaine followed Brookes out of the pit sheepishly. She ran her fingers through her raven hair with a sigh and looked back up at the clock. Three more minutes.
"Waiting for someone?" Kim asked, trying to break the tension.
"What?" Callie asked, confused.
"You haven't stopped checking the clock since I got here..."
"Yeah, well, surgeons have lives too." Callie stated weakly. "Now, is there anything else you need to tell us before I hand off your case?"
Kim shifted in her bed and crossed her arms. "You're going on a date aren't you?"
"Please answer the question."
"Answer mine!" Kim said, a mixture of humor and stubbornness in her voice.
"Great. Sounds like there's nothing else you have to tell me, Dr. Choi will be taking over your case for the evening," Callie started packing up her things and turned to leave just as Kim spoke up.
"Wait! Wait! Just, come back," Kim asked.
Callie turned back to Kim as she heard the doors to the pit opening. For the first time, she really hoped it was Mark. "What?"
"Just, I don't know much about you but I know people and the way you acted around Zona the other night... I know there's more going on there."
Callie's eyes widened in disbelief. "You don't know what you're talking about."
"I know her better than you ever will and I can tell you right now that you don't want to get caught up in her, Callie. She's a cheater and a liar and you don't want to mess with that," Kim's eyes were on fire, a tinge of hatred lacing her words.
Callie squared her shoulders and looked Kim in the eyes. It took a minute for her to arranger her thoughts and a minute longer to make sure the words coming from her lips would be in English, not the native Spanish that her anger seemed to flow so easily through. Her eyes tightened into a stern glare, "You're wrong. You don't know her... you say you do, but if you did, you would know that she could never be a cheater or a liar." Callie bit her tongue and suppressed her anger, "and it's Dr. Torres," she spat as she turned on her heel and stormed away from Kim's bed and towards the exit of the ER.
"Hey, Callie!" Mark tried to catch up with her.
"Not now, Mark," Callie said shortly.
"What?" Mark caught her arm. "What's going on?"
"Nothing… why are you even here?" Callie asked, suddenly aware of her surroundings.
"You paged me. To fix that red headed bitch's face. I don't know why though, I thought Jackson did a wonderful job," Mark said with a giant smile.
Suddenly, she understood. "You know what?" Callie said, a matching smile on her face. "He really did."
