"You know, I had my suspicions about you since the incident in the bongo."
The sound of Obi-Wan's voice pulled Renell from her reverie as she leaned against the steel wall in the small hold. A day had passed since Qui-Gon had left with the little party. She had been thinking about her family of all things. Something she would do every day since she was captured. She never stopped thinking about them. They were the reason she wasn't fully broken like the rest of her master's faction.
Why she never stayed fully succumbed to the Dark Side.
The thought of her family fueled her humanity.
"Oh? I'm impressed, Padawan," she replied, not thinking of her words as she spoke. He had followed her in the small hold where she wanted to gather her thoughts. Renell had found out that it was hard to concentrate around the Padawan. The longer she was around him, the more she seemed to get caught off guard.
Her response was a prime example as the Padawan raised an eyebrow. Renell made sure to evade his gaze or she would end up becoming more frustrated than she already was. She did not want to deal with the odd emotions and symptoms. The young woman had half a mind to confront him about it but kept quiet. She had a feeling it would lead to further embarrassment.
"Didn't know you were so easy to impress," he said, his tone was surprisingly teasing and Renell felt her face warm. "You can call me Obi-Wan, Princess Organa."
The young woman could not help the small smile on her lips as a tinge of sadness touched her brown eyes. Her former title seemed to diminish into nothing as the years progressed. She was no longer royalty, a part of a family that wanted to better her planet. She was a monster who was willing to use any means necessary to kill the man who captured her. "I don't think that title suits me anymore. Renell's just fine."
Her dark eyes found the Padawan's light blue orbs and she saw the change in them, the way they softened as they looked at her. His entire demeanor seemed to shift and she could feel his usually tense composure lessen.
Renell could feel her heartbeat quicken in pace and looked away from him but could feel his eyes on her. She wished he would stop staring but since his master left, he seemed to do it constantly. The compassionate look in his eyes was not something she would ever see from someone again. Something she did not think the Padawan would ever show her.
"I've had the privilege of meeting your family."
Just as quickly as she looked away from Obi-Wan, her brown eyes landed right back on him. The mention of her family caught her completely off guard. How exactly did the Padawan know she was thinking about her family at the moment? She did not even mention them.
The connection.
That could be the only explanation. Somehow through their odd bond, he was able to tell what she was thinking. But his statement brought her from her thoughts to the topic of her family rather than her focusing on the bond. He had met them before. Questions filled her head as she stared at the Padawan in curiosity but there was one question she wanted answered before any others.
"How were they?" she asked so softly, that she was surprised Obi-Wan could hear her. One boot-clad foot stepped in the direction of the Padawan in hopes that if she were to get closer, she would gather all sorts of information on her family. She was within reaching distance of Obi-Wan as she looked up at him.
"I haven't forgotten. It was only a year ago. I – I could sense a deep sorrow within them that I could only now guess was due to their loss."
"Me."
She spoke the words in a whisper and her statement was confirmed with a nod of Obi-Wan's head. Tearing her eyes away from the Jedi, Renell looked past him at the steel wall. After all these years, her family was still grieving. Grieving for her, the youngest in the family. She hoped they didn't continue to grieve to this day but she highly doubted it if it were only a year since Obi-Wan met them.
"I was only seven when I was taken from them. Never growing up with my siblings or my parents and their little lessons. It's been ten years of torture. Pain," she whispered, spitting out the last word. Her eyes narrowed as she thought of her master. The man who took her life away. Anger spread through her body like fire. She could feel herself slowly losing control. She just wanted to let go. Release her anger. "That monster – that filth caused my family so much pain –"
A light touch under her chin forced her to look into the blue eyes of Obi-Wan. She could see flecks of golden red in his hair, gray swirled in the blue of his eyes, the smooth lines of his skin, and the sharp edges of his face. The anger that filled her slowly faded back into the depths of the ever present darkness within her as she kept her eyes on the young man. She felt his finger leave her chin in order for his large calloused hand to cup her cheek. Compassion mixed with something she could not directly identify filled his eyes as he looked down at her.
"You will be with your family again, Renell."
The colors of gold and crimson splayed across the darkening sky as the Twin Suns began to set. It was one of the only few beautiful aspects of the sand planet that many agreed upon until total darkness set in, the stars being the only source of light when out in the Dune Sea. However, as the last rays of the sun disappeared, a small transport sped through the sea of sand. Its metal gleamed brightly from the last rays of light until the dark of night hid it from view.
The black ship continued on its venture through the Dune Sea until it came to a stop at a plateau close to the city of Mos Espa, allowing the ship's pilot a good view of the land in all directions. And it was not a moment later that the transports engines shut down and the aft hatchway slid open. Metal stairs appeared for the owner to descend. Slowly but surely, a black cloaked figure stepped onto the metal stairs.
With the help of the stars, one would be able to see the face of the cloaked figure clearly. Black tattoos trailed along the red skin of the male being as its yellow eyes analyzed the land. He was looking for his prey and he was going to succeed, so long as he had the element of surprise. Somehow he felt an echo of hers on his journey to Tatooine. As fast as it came, it went but he hoped he would be able to channel it. Closing his eyes, he began reaching out for the young woman that he captured all those years ago.
