Chapter 10: In the Jungle

"This is so wrong on so many levels." Violet stated as she watched up and down the corridor as Kono picked the lock on the condo door.

They had slipped in with a delivery man and moved through the building to the location that they had gotten from the tax records. As far as Violet was concerned it was breaking and entering – in Kono's mine, it was just another day with Five-O.

"You didn't have to come. I could have brought Chin and you could have stayed with Toast." Kono retorted.

"Yeah right, and be left out of my own case?"

"Well, if you work with us again you'll understand that this is nothing new." Kono stated as the lock gave way and she opened the door and slipped inside. "Wow, nice place for a teacher." she said as Violet followed and she snapped on a pair of latex gloves.

"Spotless, just like the crime scenes," Violet said and tip-toed through the apartment, "we're not going to find anything here." she added as she followed Kono even further inside.

"If I were a killer, where would I hide my trophies? Somewhere close to me. Somewhere I spend most of my time so I could admire them. Somewhere like here?" Kono asked aloud as she slipped into the master suite and exited again to cross the hall to the second bedroom.

"He's a professor - of course he has an office." Violet stated as she quickly scanned the room that was meant to be a second bedroom but was not.

"Looks like a museum, more than an office." Kono stated as she scanned the walls around the large antique desk in the centre of the room.

"We have a lap top," Violet called as she opened the drawer in the desk.

"I doubt that he does anything pertaining to the murders on the computer, but it might give us insight into how he finds his girls." Kono said and was careful not to move anything too much.

"Or it's all marking…" Violet sighed as she got into the computer.

"We could bring it to Toast – if there is anything hidden on it, he'll find it."

"It must be nice to be above all the regular channels. I mean really, who gets a hacker, with a criminal record, on their elite task-force?" Violet asked.

"We are spoiled, that's for sure, but we are being held more accountable by this governor – well not so much on this case because it's personal to him." Kono explained and then stopped.

"What is it?" Violet asked as she watched Kono carefully.

"Do these look familiar to you?" Kono asked and pointed at a glass case that was tucked into the book shelf but it was still visibly on display and could be seen in a direct line of sight if you were sitting at the desk.

"Holy Shit! He is our guy!" Violet stated as she recognized the pieces of jewelry that had been taken from each and every one of her profiled victims - plus many more.

Danny slammed on the brakes as the maroon Journey appeared out of no where. Grabbing their weapons and jumping out of the car, Steve and Danny tossed the plan to the wind as they moved toward the truck.

"Still warm," Steve said as he pressed his hand against the hood of the vehicle.

"Steve, this is the middle of the jungle. We are screwed." Danny whispered but Steve had locked onto a nearly invisible trail and rushed down it. "Great!" Danny huffed and followed Steve.

After a short jog, Steve stopped as a cinderblock building, with a chain link fence and a no trespassing sign. It had appeared out of nowhere. The chain and the padlock that locked the fence gate hung loosely as the gate swung open.

"You were right," Danny whispered as he followed Steve to the door.

A silent count down and Steve was moving again. Steve rushed down a dimly lit set of stairs, his weapon raised and Danny covering his back. As they reach the bottom of the stairs the space grew wider and was lit by millions of plain white candle - almost burnt all the way to the bottom. In the middle of the large open space was a young woman - just like all the others. There were no windows, no other doors, now where to go and the air was thick and stagnant. It was hard to breathe as one by one the candles started to go out.

A quick scan told them they were alone in the one room space and Danny rushed forward toward the woman, as Steve watched up the stair case – his weapon always at the ready – for the man who was sure to return as the time of his routines was coming to an end.

"Steve, call for help. She's alive!" Danny yelled as he felt a shallow breath escape the woman who was bound by her hands and feet to the chair. "Lydia, can you hear me."

"Help me, please," Lydia whispered.

"I've got you. You're safe now."
