"Promise we'll be friends forever, Dee?"
"I promise, Gene. Friends forever."
Lydia raised her right hand, placing her left over her heart. "On my heart."
"Silly, it's 'cross your heart,' not on!"
"But if I cross my heart, it's an X, like wrong. If the promise is on my heart, it's there forever, just like my heart." Lydia tapped her chest with her left hand.
"I like that," Eugene said quietly, putting his right hand on his chest. "I promise to be your best friend forever, on my heart."
Lydia got a sad look. "I don't wanna move. I don't care how much better the new house will be. I don't want to look out the window and not see your room anymore."
"Don't worry! I'll send you letters every day, and we'll still see each other in school!" Eugene reached out and grabbed both of Lydia's hands. "And one day, we'll never have to be apart again, because we'll be married and live together."
"You can't decide that now, you're five!" Lydia giggled, squeezing Eugene's hands.
"Well too bad! I already did!" Eugene grinned and patted her head. "One day we'll be married!"
"You're silly, Gene," Lydia giggled.
"So are you, Dee. That's why we're best friends."
