Carole and Burt knew this wasn't going to be an easy day. Not in the least. They were taking their sons Finn and Kurt to the dentist and they knew it wasn't going to be easy. Kurt has never been to the dentist, so Burt knew it was going to be a struggle. Carole took Finn went once when he was two, he probably doesn't remember.
He told them last night about the appointments. Kurt tried to argue with his dad out of going, but that didn't work. He cried a little, but Burt told him it's not bad at all. Burt knew Kurt was going to be a challenge with the dentist. Finn was different. When Carole told him, he just got quiet. It was probably going to be interesting with him.
"Are the boys up yet?" Carole asked and Burt shook his head. Haven't heard a thing. They are either still asleep or not wanting to come down because they know where they are going." Burt replied and Carole agreed.
"I'll get Finn. You get Kurt, okay?" Carole said and Burt sighed. "You get the easier one." Burt joked and Carole laughed. "Go on." She said then they both went to find their kids. Carole knocked on the door of her son's room and then went in. Finn was still asleep. As she thought.
She sat on the edge of his bed and started to shake him awake. "Finn. Finn honey, wake up." Carole said and Finn started wake up. "Mom. What time is it?" Finn asked as he rubbed his eyes. "You have to get ready. We have to leave soon. Remember what I told you last night. You and Kurt are going to the dentist." She told him and then she saw his eyes widen.
"No. Why do we have to go?" Finn asked. The eight year old is obviously a little scared about going. "To make sure your teeth are healthy. It's not going to hurt." Carole told him and he grinned. "Okay." Finn agreed. Carole sighed, happily. Maybe Burt was right and Finn would be easier to get in the car than Kurt would.
While Carole got Finn ready, he went into Kurt's room. He looked and saw Kurt wasn't in his bed. He never saw him leave the room. Burt knew he must have been hiding somewhere. The kid must have been terrified. "Kurt." Burt called, but nothing.
He looked in his closet, behind the curtains, but Kurt wasn't anywhere. Then he got on his knees and thought he might look under his bed. And sure enough, there Kurt was. "There you." Burt said, happy that he found him. "Come out of there. We have to get ready to go." Burt said, but Kurt shook his head.
"No!" He exclaimed. "You and Finn have to go to the dentist. Come on." Burt said, but Kurt shook his head again. "I'm not going!" He said and Burt sighed. "Bud, there's nothing to be afraid of." Burt said. Kurt still stayed where he was. He shook his head stubbornly.
Then Carole and Finn walked into the room. "Hey. Is Kurt ready? Where is he?" She asked and Burt sighed. He saw that Finn was all ready. Finn was much easier. It couldn't be because he was a little older than Kurt. "He's under the bed. He won't come out." Burt said and then Carole walked in more and got on her knees.
"Hey Kurt, are you scared?" Carole asked, gently and Kurt nodded. "Sweetie, there's nothing to worry about. You and Finn are just going to get your teeth cleaned and looked at." Carole told him. "Okay? Now, why don't you come out?" She asked and Kurt hesitated. But he knew they were going to get him out of there eventually. He came out from under the bed.
Soon enough, they were all in the car and Burt was driving towards the dentist's office. Finn was a little nervous, but not as much as Kurt was. He sat there in silence. It was Kurt's first visit and he was terrified. Finn wasn't as scared, however he went when he was younger. Carole was sure Finn had no memory of it.
The drive wasn't long, so they were there a few minutes later. "Alright boys, we're here." Carole said and looked back at them. Finn didn't seem to care. He didn't want to be here however. No kid would. She looked at Kurt who looked like he just walked into the torture chamber. It wasn't going to easy to get Kurt in there. She just hoped Finn wouldn't make it any harder.
"It's okay sweetie. Nothing is going to happen okay." Carole told Kurt, but his expression didn't change. Burt and Carole got out of the car. She opened Finn's door and he left the car without any problem. Burt opened Kurt's door and he sat there. He didn't want to go in there. "Come on buddy." Burt said, but Kurt shook his head. "Hey, it's okay. If you want, I'll carry you." Burt said.
Kurt hesitated, but then realized he could go for the offer or be forced out of the car. Kurt put his arm up and his father picked him up. Kurt had his arms around him and his head resting on his shoulder. He closed his eyes. He felt safe; at the moment anyway.
They walked into the building. "Okay buddy, I have to put you down, okay." Burt said and put Kurt down. Burt and Carole signed Kurt and Finn and then went over and sat on the chairs. Finn was already playing with some of the things they had in the waiting room. Kurt was just sitting on one of the chairs. He didn't feel like doing anything.
"Kurt, why don't you go play with Finn?" Carole suggested, but Kurt shook his head. He was too nervous, he didn't want to play. He didn't feel good. "Would you like to read a magazine or book?" Carole asked and he shook his head. The only thing Kurt wanted to do was leave.
Then a tall man, in white came out into the waiting room. It was probably the dentist, Carole and Burt stood up. "Hello Mr. Hummel. And Mrs. Hudson. I'm Dr. Teller." The dentist said and shook both adults hands. The dentist, Carole, and Burt then turned their attentions over to Finn. He was staring at the dentist.
He walked over to Finn and got on one knee. "Hi Finn. You've gotten bigger." He said and Finn nodded. "Mom." Finn called, the dentist was probably making Finn a little conscious. "It's okay honey." Carole said.
"Are you the tooth doctor person?" Finn asked and the three adults chuckled. "Yes." He answered and he held out his hand for Finn. Finn smiled and shook it. The dentist then scanned the room. "I thought there were two?" He asked and Burt arched his eyebrow and saw Kurt wasn't sitting in the chair anymore. "Where did he go now?" Burt asked and Finn looked around.
"He's under that chair!" Finn exclaimed and then they all saw him. He had this terrified look on his face. He was clutching on the chair legs for life. The dentist walked over there and got on his knees and smiled warmly at Kurt. "You must be Kurt." He said and Kurt nodded. "You want to come out? So I can take a look at your teeth?" The dentist asked and Kurt shook his head, stubbornly.
Then Burt walked over to where Kurt was. "Come on buddy." Burt said, but Kurt didn't move. "No!" He protested. Burt sighed. He was getting frustrated with him. "Kurt, come on. He's not going to hurt you. Now, come out from there!" Burt said. He sounded a little discouraged with him. Kurt didn't like it when his dad got upset with him. But he didn't want to go into the office either.
Kurt's eyes started to water. He was terrified and upset at the same time. He started to cry. "Hey buddy, don't cry. I'm not mad at you or anything. And he just wants to look at your teeth. Don't be upset." Burt said. He hated it when he saw Kurt cry. It broke is heart.
"Daddy, please don't make me go in there!" Kurt sobbed. A few tears escaped his eyes and went down his face. Kurt was really scared. He really hated seeing his son so scared. And he didn't like it when he cried. "Hey, don't cry. Nothing bad is going to happen. I'll be there the whole time." Burt said.
Kurt stopped crying and he came out from under the chair. "Daddy!" Kurt exclaimed, nervously. He had his arms up again, so Burt knew Kurt wanted him to carry him. He knew Kurt was terrified so he did. "I got you." Burt said as he picked his son up. Kurt wrapped his arms tightly around his dad. He put his head on his fathers shoulder and closed his eyes. Burt knew that Kurt felt a little better in his arms.
Burt, Carole, and Finn followed the dentist into one of the exam rooms. Burt and Carole sat on the chairs in the corner. "Alright, so which one of you boys would like to go first?" The dentist asked and Kurt hid his face in his father's shoulder. Finn didn't say anything.
"Kurt. It's okay. Watch me." Finn said and Kurt looked up at Finn. He was trying to be a good big brother to Kurt. He was nervous, but he knew that Kurt was more scared than he was. He hoped he could help. Carole smiled when he heard her son say that to his brother. Burt did too.
Finn then climbed into the dentist chair. The dentist smiled. He put on some gloves and then put a bib on Finn. He laid the chair back and turned on the light. "What are you going to do?" Finn asked. "I'm going to clean your teeth." He told him. "What flavor would you like? Grape, Cherry, Mint, Bubblegum, or Watermelon?" Finn thought for a moment. "Watermelon." Finn decided and the nodded.
A few seconds later, the dentist was ready to start. "Okay Finn, open wide for me." The dentist said and Finn did. The dentist started to clean his teeth. The noise of the brush worried Kurt. "Daddy." He said and Burt rubbed him on the back.
The dentist finished the cleaning a few minutes later. "Okay, now…" The dentist tried to say, but Finn cut him off. "Wait! It's Kurt's turn now! To get his cleaning!" Finn exclaimed. The dentist smiled warmly. "Hold. I'm just going to examine your teeth. Open up." The dentist said and Finn complied.
The dentist picked up his mirror and explorer tool and examined Finn's mouth. Everything looked good, but then the dentist found a small cavity. Then he retracted his tools. "Everything looks good. However he does have one small cavity on one of his teeth in the back." He said. Carole sighed. "Do we need to do a follow up or can we fill it today?" Carole asked.
"I can fill it today. After I finish with Kurt." He said and Carole nodded. He took the bib off Finn and he got off the chair. "Okay Kurt, it's your turn." The dentist said. Kurt had wide eyes. "No!" He said, terrified. "It's okay Kurt. It doesn't hurt at all." Finn assured his little brother.
Burt sighed. "Come on buddy. You're going to sit the chair with daddy." Burt said and got up from the seat he was in and sat in the dentist chair, with Kurt sitting on his lap. He still seemed scared, but he was calm, probably because his dad was there. The dentist put a bib on Kurt.
Then when he started to recline the chair, Kurt got freaked out. "Daddy! What's happening!" Kurt asked.
"It's okay. The chair is going back okay. Basically you're laying down." Burt told him and Kurt nodded. Then the dentist turned the light on and adjusted it over Kurt. "What flavor do you like Kurt?" The dentist asked.
"Cherry!" Kurt said and he nodded. A few seconds later, he had the brush in his hand and was ready to start cleaning his teeth. "Okay Kurt, open your mouth for me." He said, but Kurt shook his head and put his hands over his mouth.
"Kurt, just open your mouth. It won't hurt. He's just going to clean them. I'm right here buddy." Burt told his son and Kurt shrugged. Burt let him hold his hands and then Kurt opened his mouth and closed his eyes. The dentist started to clean his teeth and after a while Kurt opened his eyes.
After a few minutes, the cleaning was done. Kurt seemed a little more relaxed, at least until the dentist picked up the tools he needed next. Kurt stared at them with wide eyes. "Don't worry. This is just a mirror." The dentist told him.
"Will the fish hook tool hurt?" Kurt asked and the dentist smiled. "No. I just want to look at your teeth, make sure you don't have any cavities." He said.
"But you said Finn has one." Kurt pointed out. "And apparently, he's been eating too many sweets." He told him. "Now open wide for me." He instructed and Kurt complied, but only a little. "A little more Kurt." The dentist said and Kurt did. The dentist then started to examine Kurt's teeth and he didn't find any problems. He then retracted his tools and put them on the tray.
"Alright, Kurt, you are all done. No cavities. Good job!" The dentist told him as he took his bib off and put the chair up. "Yay!" Kurt exclaimed as he got off the chair. Everyone laughed. "Daddy!" Burt sat down next to Carole and then looked at his son. He then received a big hug from Kurt. Probably thanking him for being there for him. "What was that for?" Burt asked.
"YOU'RE THE BEST DADDY IN THE WORLD!" Kurt exclaimed and Burt smiled. "I love you bud." Burt said and Kurt hugged him again. "Okay, Kurt is free to go. Finn, hope up on the chair again and I'll fill that cavity of yours." He said and Finn climbed into the dentist chair again.
"Kurt, lets go into the waiting room." Burt said and he directed his son to the waiting room. Carole was following. "Mom!" Finn called and Carole looked back and saw that her son was scared. She walked back to him and took his hand. "It's alright honey." She coaxed.
"Relax. Won't hurt. I'll put this gel on your tooth, and then you won't feel a thing." The dentist said and turned the light back on. "Alright, open." He instructed. "Mom." Finn mumbled and Carole rubbed his hand. "It's okay, honey. I'm right here." She said.
The filling took no time at all. After they were all done they went out to eat. But after a while Finn started to get tired so Carole and Burt took them home. Carole took Finn upstairs while Burt stayed with Kurt. "Finn, I'm really happy what you did today. When Kurt was really scared and you tried to show him that it wasn't bad." Carole said.
"But he didn't believe me." Finn pointed out. "Yes, but you were a good big brother today. I'm really proud of you." She said and then she hugged her son.
