Chapter 10: Blast from the Past

AN: Just a little filler to make a promise that I HAVE NOT ABANDONED THIS FIC! I need to take the time to reread and regather my notes so I can make the murder make complete sense and be neat and tidy. So to start this chapter off is Maura a sophomore at BCU and Jane a young new cop. And reminder, Maura NEVER introduces Langston as her boyfriend. Hence why Jane goes, "I never knew that you dated someone in film" three chapters back. Enjoy! I've written and rewritten this one and it was hard to get it to flow so kinda take it as a getting back into the groove thing. Next one, which is halfway done, is MUCH better as I feel back in the swing of things. Love you all! I'm back baby! Sorry if this one's a little short and full of errors though. Was excited to just get this one out. Oh and warning angst past and present is brewing for Maura/Jane. 3 Can't be too easy can it? =D

Sophomore Year at BCU Continued:

"Rizzoli? Black hair with curls?"

"Yeah that's it. How did you know?"

"We were best friends in high school." Maura mumbled taken through a loop. It had been two years since they've seen each other, since graduation to be precise, Maura was going to confess her love to Jane but instead Jane went out with Casey. Two days later Maura had left for Europe before freshman year of college, her heart broken.

"Lost touch after college?" Langston asked innocently taking a big sip of his drink not seeing the pain in Maura's eyes.

"Something like that." She answered. Such a small, small world they lived in.

"What do you mean something like that?" He asked leaning into her spare chair slurping up the rest of the drink. An act that always made Maura cringe but chose to ignore.

"We went to high school together, went separate ways after I left for boarding school, even after I came back for my last semester our senior year." She frowned at the memory. At the way things had ended. Or lack there of.

"So you knew each other. Left. Came back to graduate. Alright. I see. Where you good friends?" He slurped his final gulp, the straw making a SSSSSS sound as he shook the cup to get a final drop.

"Yes we were." She itched to tell him to stop but forced her focus on the flash cards on the desk.

"You think you can set up lunch with her and I?"

Maura stopped from sitting back down, and turned on her heel to fully face him. She had been avoiding his gaze since he had said the name Rizzoli, her head full of memories.

"Lunch?" She echoed not getting where he was going. She was smart, a genius in fact, but why would he want lunch with Jane Rizzoli? They were worlds apart, Langston and Jane.

"Lunch. I want to try to talk her into letting us finish filming on the premises. My project is due soon and who knows how long the investigation will take."

"Langston, someone was murdered." She said, pieces clicking together and thoroughly appalled at the lack of decency he had.

"And I have sympathy and find it even a bit eerie since it aligns with our film script." He answered, genuinely frowning. But Maura still wasn't sure if it had to do with the movie or the death. That irked her to her core.

"It does?" Maura asked, not remembering why exactly it had to do with his film. Oh right witches. A woman had been killed for being a suspected witch. She remembered. The wheels in her brain continued turning, playing out different scenarios in her head if she talked to Jane again since graduation. "I'll go and see what I can do." She said a beat later.

"You will?"

"Yeah. I will."

"And can I come with you? In case she agrees to lunch?" He asked. "I-" She hesitated. In truth she'd rather see Jane alone but he'd been so helpful and understanding of her schedule lately, bring her snacks and always taking raincheck. "Yes but stay back until after I talk to her?"

"Sounds like a plan. When should we go?"

"Let me finish this note card and we'll go." Maura paused at her desk. "Are you sure she's still there?"

"Oh yeah, she's there watching the place. Told me as she shoved the camera out of her face."

Maura snickered. Oh Jane Rizzoli. Seems she hadn't changed a bit.

She saw Jane standing in-front of crime scene tape. Her hair in a tight bun, as tight as the curls would allow that is, with a police cap on top and in full uniform. Her face was cold and tight, arms at her hips, legs apart. It was as if she was itching for someone to come at her and ask for a fight. Maura flashed back to high school lacrosse, it was the same stance she had before each game as she stretched. Same in softball as well. The, "try me" look. Cold. Stern. Devoid of emotion. And intimidating as hell. Maura gulped and eyed Langston who looked ready to pounce on her to ask to film. Oh how naive he was…

"Stay here, I'll be back." She mumbled and walked the block to her.

Jane saw her coming half way and kept her eyes on her, not saying a word, lips tighter than before if even possible.

"Hi Jane." Maura said once they were face to face.

"Isles." Jane replied coldly. As if Maura didn't have a thing to be pissed off about too.

"You look good." Was all Maura could come up with.

"Thanks. You back in Boston?" Jane's eyes refused to meet with Maura's, but she knew she had given her the once over.

"Yeah at BCU."

"Good for you.

"See you became a cop…"

"What gave it away?"

"Jane…"

"Don't. You're the one that left Maura. And then you came back and just… You just… Look. Whatever you want to talk about right now, I can't. I'm working. Nice seeing you." She crossed her arms, dismissing her, just as her radio crackled.

"Rizzoli, you'll be relieved in 20 minutes, you need anything in the meantime?" A voice crackled.

Jane had her hand on the walkie. She casted a glance at Maura before hitting a button.

"I'll just be going." Her head hung as she shuffled back to Langston, not even listening to Jane's reply. All she heard was white noise and all she felt was heart ache.

"How'd it go?" He asked.

"No chance in filming today I think." Maura answered him trying desperately to not let the tears that prickled at her eyes fall.

Jane stood in front of the Littlest Cafe with a tightness in her chest she'd never admit to. She rolled her neck ready to open the door but before she did, she turned and faced her team. Korsak and Maura both had grim smiles on their face for Jane's sake.

Maura was all but biting her lip, having already relived the damn nightmare she had the night before in the car three times whenever she accidentally zoned out.

"Alright guys. So before we go in, here's who we need to talk to. Zoe the ex-lover, Gillian the lighting director, and the director and producer. Eric Rodriquez, and John Campo. Korsak you called them all to be here right?"

Korsak nodded and grabbed his note book quickly flipping through as a refresher. " Told them it was here or at the station. So let's do this. Maura, be our guide in their world." He stepped in-front of Jane, noting her hesitation but wouldn't dare comment on it, opening the door, the air conditioner hitting them despite the cool air outside. Together they approached three of the four witnesses who were all conveniently sitting at a side table nursing coffees exchanging hushed whispers.

"Hello gang." Jane greeted, shutting them up instantly, smiling the smile Maura dubbed her kickass, sass me I dare you look.

"Detectives. Doctor." Eric, the director, responded.

John Campo, the producer whom they were not formally introduced to, merely nodded their way behind a pair of dark sunglasses.

Zoe cleared her throat, eyes wide and looking semi terrified. "Hello detectives. Doctor Isles."

"So let's do this one at a time. Starting with you Mr. Campo." Jane not bothering with pleasantries.

"Me? Why me? I wasn't even around." He sounded almost panicked and thrusted the sunglasses up, revealing a black eye.

Jane was about to jump down his throat, not up to formalities or fake whoa is me types now that she saw he had been in an altercation, but Maura simply put a hand on her shoulder and her muscles relaxed and took a deep breath. Jane cleared her throat and glanced at Korask who rolled his neck and winked ever so quickly in the direction of John Campo's black eye. After working together so long they could read one another thoughts without speaking. He had seen and thought the same thing too. Campo may have been in a fight with the killer.

"Well Mr. Campo, you're such a busy man, I'm surprised you're even out here in the first place. I'm sure you're needed else where on other projects." Maura grinned at him warmly. He slid out of his chair at that, almost heaving a sigh of relief at her words. She casted a quick glance at Jane adding a mere head nod. Jane smirked back, admiring how smooth her doctor was.

"Yes, you'll be needing to attended to many things other than this I'd presume." Korsak added catching on to Maura's good cop.

"Well, you're right I will. Thank you." He straightened his tie and followed them into a private corner leaving the other two to go back to hushed whispers. Jane casted a glance at the duo wondering just what was so intriguing. She focused back on the people in front of her

"So what do you want to know?" Campo asked finger tapping against the table. He looked uncomfortable and out of place in his suit and tie.

"Where were you when Sam Cooper died?" Jane asked bluntly, sliding into a chair opposite of him.

"I was here, I came earlier to check on the filming process."

Maura frowned and leaned on the table. "Why is that? I know it is a producers job to make sure the money is being used properly but from what I understand producers are rarely here unless there is a problem."

"There was an issue. Sam Cooper." He answered simply. "He was bribing me to up his salary to 9 million."
