"Els? Come on, Els. Wake up." Kristoff continued to watch his sister. She had been sleeping all day, and hadn't hardly moved. He had known she was sick, but he didn't think it would keep her asleep for an entire day. Granted, she had been up and doing things all day yesterday. He definitely shouldn't have let her do anything.
Kristoff gently placed his hand on Elsa's forehead again. He frowned. She was still burning up. I thought hypothermia made you cold. Not hot. He sighed and got up to go get another cold washcloth from the kitchen. He looked at the huge pile of washcloths that had already been used up. I'm gonna need to wash all of these tonight, that way we can use them some more tomorrow. He opened the drawer, and noticed that there was nothing in it. He sighed. Or I can wash them now.
"Kris, we aren't supposed to go outside at night. Papa said it was dangerous." Elsa watched as her big brother continued to climb up on the snowmobile. He just looked at her and smiled.
"Come on. I'm a teenager now. Those rules are for kids." Elsa frowned and crossed her arms over her chest.
"I'm not a kid." She continued to pout as her older brother laughed at her.
"Sure you aren't. Only kids follow the rules. Are you a kid?" Elsa looked up at Kristoff's expectant face. She started thinking. Was she a kid? No. She was 11. She was practically an adult! But then again, Papa had said not to go out on the slopes at night. There were wolves, and avalanches, and oh goodness. She didn't know what to do.
"I guess you are. I'll see you back at the house later." Kristoff revved the engine, and Elsa jumped. That was it. She wasn't a kid.
"No, wait!" She ran over to the second snowmobile and started it up. She wasn't going to ski, but she would follow Kristoff out there, that way he wouldn't be alone. Kristoff sped out of the shed, and Elsa quickly followed suit. As soon as Elsa left the shed, she instantly felt terrified. She hated the dark. She hated what was hiding in it.
The two siblings raced between the trees for what felt like hours to the young girl. Every tree she would pass, she'd look behind her to make sure that wolves weren't hiding behind them, waiting to pounce. Whenever she looked forward again, she felt like she was being watched. Maybe it was just because she was feeling guilty for disobeying Papa?
The two stopped at the top of the mountain. Kristoff quickly hopped off the snowmobile and grabbed his helmet and snowboard from the back. He quickly strapped on the helmet and walked over to the slope.
"Kris, wait!" Elsa tried to get off as quickly as she could. Unfortunately for her, the snowmobile was a bit higher off the ground than she thought, and she landed face first in the snow. She distinctly heard her brother laugh. She tried not to be offended by it. She knew he was just a bully, anyways.
"Hurry up, Els, or I'm gonna go off without you." Elsa could see that Kristoff was practically dying to go down the slope. She couldn't tell which colour this was, but she had a feeling it was too difficult for him.
"Kris. Papa said not to do this. What if you fall? Or get hurt? I won't be able to see you, so I won't be able to help you, and then what'll happen?" Elsa was starting to get really worried about her brother. First, she didn't want him to get hurt. That would've been really bad. Second, she knew that Papa was going to kill him when he found out that they were on the slopes after dark.
"You know what'll happen? Nothing. Nothing will happen. You wanna know why? Because I'm not gonna get hurt. Please, Els, have a little faith. I'm an awesome snowboarder. Don't wait up!" Elsa yelled as she watched Kris jump down the slope. She ran to the edge and saw him for just a split second before the darkness swallowed him. Elsa had a small flashlight, and was shining it around as much as she could.
"What's gonna happen to him? Oh no, we're gonna be in so much trouble!" Elsa hopped up onto the snowmobile and rode it down to the bottom of the slope. It didn't take her too long, but when she got down there, Kristoff was still nowhere to be seen. She started to panic.
"Come on, Kris. Just get down here so we can go back inside." She could feel herself start to shiver as the cold finally started to catch up to her. She rummaged through the small basket behind the seat and found a blanket. Thank goodness for Papa always being prepared, she thought. It might still be really cold outside, but at least she had a blanket to try and keep her warm.
"Look out!" Elsa looked up to see Kristoff coming in. Fast. She turned the key in the ignition and moved aside just as Kristoff passed her. He tried to slow down, and ended up falling on his face. Elsa turned off the engine and ran over to make sure her brother wasn't hurt.
"Are you okay? You came in really fast. Did you break something? How about your face, is it too cold?" Elsa was trying to help Kristoff up, but he just chuckled and gently pushed her aside.
"I'm perfectly fine. Didn't you see how cool that was? I came in so fast! Let me tell ya, those slopes are much faster after dark. That was awesome!"
"I'm glad you enjoyed it." Both sibling turned to see who had spoken. Elsa instantly lowered her head when she saw that it was Papa. He had such a disappointed look that Elsa couldn't hardly stand it.
"Papa, listen-"
"No, Kristoff. I don't want to listen. You two deliberately disobeyed me. I've told you countless times not to go on the slopes after dark." Elsa watched out of the corner of her eye as Kristoff lowered his head, too. Both siblings knew they were in very big trouble. The only problem was they didn't know what their punishment would be. Papa had never given them one, because he had assumed that they would have followed this rule.
"I know, Papa. I'm sorry." Elsa heard her Papa sigh, but then he was quiet for a few moments. Those few moments were terrifying. She had no idea if he was mad, or upset, or disappointed. Maybe it was a combination of the three? Yeah, that would make the most sense.
"Elsa. I thought you knew better." Elsa looked up. She could see something in her Papa's eyes, but she couldn't tell what it was. All that she knew was that it wasn't a good thing.
"I just…" Elsa looked over to see Kristoff. He still had his head down, and he was rubbing the back of his neck. He was clearly upset, and maybe even a little embarrassed. Elsa loved her brother, and knew that he didn't do this to get her in trouble. He just wanted to go snowboarding, and he didn't want to go alone. Elsa sighed. She knew what she was going to do.
"I convinced Kristoff to come out here with me. I wanted to see how long it would take to get down the slope at night, and he's the better snowboarder. I'm sorry, Papa. It was completely irresponsible." While Elsa put her head down, Papa lifted his up. He watched his little girl for a minute. She had just admitted to being the mastermind behind something that she hadn't done. He knew in an instant that it hadn't been her fault. He looked over at Kristoff, and he could see his son lower his head even more.
"I accept both of your apologies. However, that does not excuse you from your punishment. The two of you, get on the snowmobile. I want you to go up there, get the other one, and come back down. No side trips, do you understand?" Elsa and Kristoff nodded before getting on the snowmobile. They took off as quickly as possible, so as not to upset Papa even more.
When they had reached the other snowmobile, Kristoff got off to head to the empty one. But before he left, he leaned over and gave Elsa the biggest hug he could manage. Elsa was shocked, but quickly returned the hug.
"Thanks, Els." Elsa smiled to herself.
"Well. What are little sisters for?" Kristoff pulled away and flashed her a huge smile before jogging over to the other snowmobile. As they started heading back down the mountain, Elsa's smile faltered. What on Earth was waiting for them at home?
"So how's she doing?" Anna looked up at Kristoff. She had gotten a call about half an hour ago saying that Elsa still wasn't awake. Needless to say, Anna drove over as soon as she could. Which then landed her right there, on the side of the bed, waiting for Elsa to wake up.
"Obviously, she's still out. I mean, she hasn't woken up since I called. Umm, she passed out around 9 last night? Let's see… It's about 4 now. That means she's been out for… 19 hours." Anna looked back down. She might not have been the best in health class, but even she knew that 19 hours was too long. She reached out slowly and took one of Elsa's hands.
"She's freezing. But, she's burning up. How does that happen? It makes no sense." Kristoff shook his head.
"I don't know, but she's been like that for a while. At least she isn't shivering anymore, though. She was shivering for a really long time last night." Anna frowned. She didn't like that news. Was that how she was when she was out? Had she worried everybody? She probably had.
"Well. We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?"
"Man. Are you just gonna stand there all day, or are you going to snowboard?" Elsa frowned and looked at Kristoff. Unfortunately, her quick turn moved her board slightly forward, and she wheeled her arms around to keep balance. She knew better than to wheel around, but she ended up with her butt in the snow. Kristoff burst into laughter, and she glared at him again.
"Don't be a jerk. Come on, help me up." Kristoff laughed even harder.
"No way, cutie. You wanna learn how to snowboard, you gotta learn how to stand up on your own. I'm not gonna hold your hand the whole time." Elsa glared again before looking forward. Okay, I can do this. I know what to do. She scooted forward so she was close to the board. Let's see. If left foot is forward, then I should do… this. She used her right hand to grab the front of the board. Alright, I've gotta be quick about this. On three. 1… 2… 3! She used her left hand to push herself up while her right hand pulled. She was up on her feet in no time.
"Ha! I knew I could do it." She looked back at Kristoff, and he had a smug grin on his face.
"Sure you did. Now you just need to pay attention." Elsa gave him a confused look before looking up and noticing that she was going down the slope. Panic crossed her face as she prepared herself for the slope that she was now doomed to complete.
"Holy crap." Elsa closed her eyes as she started moving faster. No, you idiot, you have to see! Right! She opened her eyes just in time to see that she was headed down the black slope. Dear god, this was going to be horrible. If she didn't survive, she hoped that at least her board would be alright.
She felt the ground fall from beneath her. She bit her bottom lip hard to keep from making a terribly girly squeal. She let her arms go out to help keep balance, but she didn't move them quickly. Her knees bent to just the right angle. She started to lose that fear that she had started out with. That is, until she hit a bump.
She knew she was doomed the moment her board went over a small chunk of ice. She braced herself as she fell to the ground and rolled. She landed on her back, her head striking the snow with a solid thunk. She opened her eyes and saw that the slope continued on in front of her. Crap. Now I have to try and turn around. She looked down – up? – to make sure that her board was okay. Oh thank God. It's alright.
She moved her legs sideways so one end of the board was in the snow. Then she rolled over quickly so she was lying on her stomach. The board hit the snow, and she felt the impact go up through her legs. Man, that's really going to hurt tomorrow. She looked down to assess her situation, and she wasn't too happy with what she saw.
The slope continued at a steep angle for about another few metres. Thankfully, there didn't seem to be any trees in the way. All she needed to do was get up, and try not to go too fast. That should be easy enough. If she started going too fast, then she would just turn heel side until she was back to a slower speed, and then she could finish going on her merry way.
Elsa spun herself around so her feet were down below her again. She looked up and down the slope to see if anyone was in the way. Once it was clear, she pushed herself up until she was sliding toe side down the mountain. Alright, Els. Just turn so you can go down the slope like a normal person. I can do this. Just don't get overconfident. Elsa jumped a bit so she could turn her board and aim back down the slope. She knew she would end up in trouble soon, but hey, that was part of the learning experience. Or at least that's what Kristoff had told her.
Elsa quickly started picking up speed. She should have known better than to go down this slope. In my defense against myself, it wasn't my fault. Kristoff distracted me. I'll just blame him. It always works. Well, except for when I can't slow down!
Elsa could feel her body start to sway more than it should, and she knew that if she moved too much then it would end up with a face full of snow. She tried not to panic and she bent her knees a little more. When she noticed that it made her speed up, she straightened up slightly, until she was almost standing completely straight. Well, as straight as her boots would allow.
She tried to gracefully turn to heel side so she could slow down. Unfortunately for her, this ended up causing her to fall backwards. Her backside hit the snow hard, and it threw her head back again. When she stopped skidding, she let her head fall onto the snow. Thank God for helmets. She tried to assess the damage again. She moved around a bit, and felt a severe pain in her back. I bet I just bruised it. I need to be a bit more careful. That is, if I ever make it down this stupid mountain.
Elsa tried not to think about things too much as she pushed herself back up and continued down the slope. Once she had gotten past the steep drop, the rest of the run wasn't too bad. There were a few more times where she ended up wiping out, and one of them even resulted in a twisted knee and sprained wrist. Such is the risks of snowboarding, she guessed. Once she finally made it to the bottom of the mountain, she felt a rush of relief as she saw Kristoff already down there, waiting.
"What took you so long? I was about to send Papa out to find you." He smiled real big before walking over and giving her a hard pat on the back. She grimaced, as her back was still extremely sore.
"I'm gonna let you in on a little secret, Kris." Kristoff looked at her and nodded, waiting to hear what she had to say.
"Don't go down a black slope if you've never officially snowboarded before." Kristoff burst into laughter and doubled over, holding his stomach with both arms. She smiled, glad that she had made him laugh, even though she was starting to feel sore all over her body. What I really need is a long, warm shower. That would fix everything.
"You know, Els, I probably could have told you that." She gave him a small frown.
"Yeah, but you didn't." Kristoff smiled and nodded.
"Of course not. Why would I help you out? You've gotta learn these things on your own. Now come on. Your face is redder than a tomato." Elsa felt herself sigh in agreement as she bent down to unstrap herself from her board. She was really starting to feel the pain in her knee, but that could be easily taken care of with some pain killers back at home. She would worry about other injuries later. For now, she was going to shower and relax.
"Is she waking up?" Anna looked over at Kristoff expectantly. He just shrugged his shoulders.
"I don't know. I mean, she's moving. So that's good, right?" The two friends looked back down at Elsa. She had finally started moving. It started off with very small movements. Her fingers would twitch, or the corner of her mouth would turn up or down. Then she started moving even more. She would roll from one side to the other. Her hand would reach up to scratch her nose- which Anna thought was absolutely adorable. She was finally resting on her stomach, with both of her hands underneath her head. She had thrown the pillow off of the bed, and Anna had wanted to get it for her, but she didn't want to move Elsa. Besides, Elsa seemed pretty comfortable where she was, anyways.
"Hey, don't worry about her. She'll be fine. Elsa's a tough chick. Besides, it's getting close to dinner. Have you eaten yet?" Anna looked up at Kristoff. She could tell that he was really trying to be a good host, but he wasn't quite sure what to do. She could also tell that he was just as worried about his sister, but he was the man, so he was going to act nonchalant about it.
"No. I don't think I've eaten anything since around noon." Kristoff nodded and started walking into the kitchen. Anna thought about following, but she would rather stay with Elsa. At least one of them needed to be there in case she woke up. She could hear Kristoff rummaging around through cupboards and the fridge, but it didn't sound like he was having any luck. Finally, Anna heard him yell through the small apartment.
"I've got stuff to make spaghetti. You want some?" Anna looked through the doorway and could barely see Kristoff. She smiled, though. It was sweet that he was trying to make sure that she ate dinner.
"I would love some." She could faintly see Kristoff nod before rummaging through more cabinets. Once she was sure that Kristoff would be fine, Anna looked back down at Elsa.
She never got tired of looking at Elsa. Sure, this might have been a little creepy because Elsa was unconscious, but hey, Anna would get in all the looking that she could. She felt like she didn't get to see Elsa enough. Anna tilted her head slightly. Something was different about Elsa this time. And no, it wasn't because she was unconscious! Wait, it was her hair! She didn't have her hair in the loose braid. It was scattered all over the place. But, it didn't look bad. It was actually really cute.
Anna heard the soft click of nails on the wood and looked back to see Sven slowly padding his way over to the bed. Anna patted the part of the bed that Elsa didn't take up, and Sven jumped up before quickly laying back up. He moved his head over closer to Anna, and she took this as a sign to start petting him. His tongue rolled out of his mouth, and a goofy grin spread across his face. Anna couldn't stop herself from giggling, because he was just too adorable.
"Kris?" Anna looked down quickly. She noticed that Elsa was moving around some more. However, this time it wasn't just a small movement. She looked like she was waking up. Anna debated with herself about whether she should get Kristoff or not, but then she thought better of it. Elsa will probably want someone to explain what happened. I don't want her waking up alone.
"Hey, Elsa." Anna tried not to talk too loudly. If Elsa was just waking up, then everything would probably seem like to her anyways. Elsa moved for a little bit longer before rolling over and looking up. Anna noticed that Elsa's normally blue eyes had red all around them, and there were huge bags under her eyes. It was probably because the poor thing was so exhausted.
"Anna? What are you doing here?" Anna smiled.
"Well. You've been asleep for…" Anna looked down at her watch. Goodness, it was already 8! No wonder Kristoff had asked if she was hungry. Anna shook her head when she remembered that she was about to answer Elsa.
"You've been asleep for almost 24 hours. Kristoff was getting worried, so he called me a few hours ago." Elsa closed her eyes and rubbed them hard. Anna heard her sigh a couple of times, and take really deep breaths before looking up again. Anna noticed that her eyes were even redder, but she would keep that observation to herself.
"I've really been asleep for that long?" Anna nodded. She wasn't really sure what else to say. Maybe it would be better if Kristoff was in here to explain everything?
"Els! You're awake!" Both girls turned to see Kristoff standing in the doorway. He had on a silly apron, and Anna had to admit, he looked pretty good in it. She shook her head again. No. She was supposed to be looking at Elsa, not at her brother.
"Yeah. I am." Kristoff smiled really big. Then he frowned slightly before looking at both girls.
"Well. Now that sleeping beauty is finally awake, I've come to the realisation that I don't have enough to make dinner. So, how about we just call in some pizza?" Both girls turned to look at each other for a minute before breaking out into huge grins. Elsa was the one that answered first.
"Order away, bro."
