Ok so I plea the fact that I had the worst case of writer's block. I must have watched 'The Monster at the End of the Book' one hundred times (my poor roommate can quote it now) trying to make it fit to this chapter. If you ever want to give your input on what you would like to see I'm open to suggestions.
I'm using the episode as a guideline so not everything is verbatim (you've seen the show you don't need my recap) I just work it to fix my story.
Disclaimer I don't own Supernatural … I don't owe anything really … except sarcasm and a good left hook. ;)
Chapter 10
Matthew, Mark, Luke and … Chuck.
"This…Chuck…has written every detail. And I do mean every detail." Dean was flipping through one of the Supernatural series. They had just left the publisher, and were outside Chuck's house. Scarlett was in the back seat brushing her doll's hair. Dean closed the book and rolled down the windows.
"Scarlett stay here while Uncle Sam and I check this out. We will be right there on the porch." Dean instructed while he unbuckled her. Scarlett nodded her head in compliance.
Dean and Sam walked up to the door. They rang the doorbell and a short man who was poorly underdressed with untamed hair answered.
"Chuck Shurley?" Dean asked. Chuck's gaze darted suspiciously between the brothers.
"Maybe…" He answered hesitantly.
"The Chuck Shurley…the author of the Supernatural series?" Chuck's grip on the door tightened as he became more nervous.
"Great…um it's always nice to meet fans." Chuck began to close the door before introductions were made. Dean's hand darted out and caught the door before it slammed in their face. Chuck stepped back as if Dean was about to strike him.
"My name is Dean and this is my brother Sam." Dean introduced. Chuck pursed his lips and stared at Dean.
"Right look I can autograph something…and you two seem pretty accurate … but I got something to do." Chuck tried to close the door again.
"Look Chuck…" Dean started. The window to the Impala was rolled all the way down now and Scarlett poked her head out.
"Daddy what's going on?" Scarlett tried to peer around her dad and uncle to see the shorter man.
"Scarlett get back in the car please." Dean called back to his daughter.
"Wait Scarlett Winchester…your daughter." Dean became suddenly protective and stepped towards Chuck who backed away quickly.
"I never wrote about Scarlett. I always left her out." Dean glared at Chuck before he spoke.
"What do you know about my daughter?" Chuck gestured for the brother's to follow him in and went straight for a bottle of whiskey sitting on the counter. Sam went back to the car to get Scarlett and carried her inside. Scarlett wiggled out of her uncle's arms once inside the house and ran over to her dad. Chuck stumbled over to the computer printer and pulled off his recent writing sample. Dean took the paper and began to read. He looked up at Chuck baffled.
"You knew we were coming?" Dean handed the papers over to Sam. Sam sat in the desk chair Scarlett ran over and climbed up in his lap to see what her uncle was reading. She was trying to sound out and read the words on the paper. Sam adjusted the paper, so Scarlett couldn't read it. While he encouraged her to read this wasn't the material he wanted her to learn from.
Chuck turned his back on the Winchesters and took another long swig from his glass and rubbed his face. He turned back to the small family and sighed in disappointment over the fact the family was still there.
"There is one solution...I only know this because I am a god." Dean rolled his eyes, Scarlett looked confused.
'You're not a god." Sam replied.
"I write things and they come alive. All those things…those horrible things. Did you really have to go through the bugs?" Dean and Sam both glared and gestured towards Scarlett. Who was studying the floor intently for those 'horrible bugs'. Scarlett hated bugs, especially spiders.
"Right…sorry...got it." Chuck apologized.
"You're not a God Chuck." Dean confirmed, Scarlett's vision focused on a tiny bug crossing the floor. She drew in a short, quick breath. Dean turned his focus away from Chuck long enough to step on the bug. Scarlett looked relieved and up at her dad like he saved her from certain peril. A quick smile tugged at the corner of Dean's mouth. He loved being his daughter's hero.
"Just read this. My latest draft." Chuck passed the rest of the script over. "I'm going to go … take a nap." He added mindful of his audience as he grabbed his bottle of whiskey and raced out of the room. Scarlett watched the funny man leave. She liked him she didn't know why. The Winchesters left to read and discuss Chuck's script and do some laundry.
Later they were in the local laundry mat Den sat on top of a table reading. Sam was loading a washer with the last load and Scarlett was using the rolling laundry basket like it was a racecar.
"I'm sitting in a laundry mat, reading about myself sitting in a laundry mat reading about myself...my head hurts." Dean grumbled. Scarlett made the sound of screeching brakes while narrowly missing a collision with another patron. Who huffed and glared at Dean while she pulled out her clothes and walked out. Dean looked up to make sure all was well and turned back to Sam.
"There is something this guy isn't telling us." Sam was skeptic Dean continued to read out their transactions as they occurred. Dean glanced up looking hurt.
"That's not a really nice thing to think about calling me." Sam turned around slightly impressed.
"The guy is good." Dean read a little further to himself he jumped up suddenly and grabbed Scarlett. He glared at the man nearby.
"Stay away from my daughter." He growled. The man turned and ran out the door quickly.
"Really good." Sam added.
Dean and Sam returned to Chuck's house. Chuck was holding the next chapter in his hands.
"You're not going to like this." He told Dean.
"I didn't like Hell." Dean mumbled. Chuck nodded and looked down at Scarlett. Sam pulled her game system from his bag.
"Hey Scarlett why don't you go play your game over there." Sam pointed to the chair on the opposite side of the room. He turned it up on the highest volume. Scarlett ran off with the game and the brothers turned back to Chuck.
"It's Lilith." Chuck wasted no time explaining. "She's coming for Sam."
"Coming to kill him?" Dean demanded, Chuck nodded slowly and looked up at the taller brother.
"When?" Sam asked.
"Tonight." Chuck answered reluctantly. He passed the chapter to Dean. "I knew you were going to ask for that." Dean read the chapter.
"Get this Lilith is not a little girl anymore. She is a dental hygienist from Indiana." Sam laughed in disbelief. "And you're going to hook up with her." Sam laughed harder.
"This is a joke." Sam retorted.
"Look we used this as a guideline. It says we go left we should go right." Dean decided, Chuck signed but thought it best not to argue with Dean. "Come on Scarlett. Let's go get some lunch." He shouted loud enough to be heard over the game. Sam reluctantly followed the father / daughter out of the house.
A few minutes later they were crowded around a small table in the middle of a restaurant.
"Sorry baby girl no cheeseburger for you or Daddy. How about some chicken fingers." Scarlett scrunched up her nose.
"I want a cheeseburger." Scarlett whined, Sam shook his head at Dean.
"Dean this is ridiculous. We know Lilith is here. We should fight instead of resist or hide." Dean was trying to help find another satisfactory item on the menu for him and Scarlett. He was not going to fight with Sam…the chapter said they get into a fight.
"It…hurts me when you try to be so reckless and not consider we're not ready." It was hard for Dean to use his words instead of his anger. He was trying ever since Scarlett came in to the picture not to get angry or fight in front of her. He would not be like his father, and today was no exception he was trying even harder given the circumstances.
The waitress approached and took their order, a cob salad for Sam, veggie burger for Dean and mac n cheese for Scarlett, who was now coloring very angrily. Call it fate or the waitress's incompetency but the food later delivered to them was exactly what they ordered in the chapter.
"Yeah beef!" Scarlett shouted.
The rest of the day they spent trying to avoid the event Chuck had predicted. Only for it to be an epic fail of mass proportion. Dean later found himself sitting in Chuck's living room, sore from the accident earlier. He was grateful he told Scarlett to stay on the sidewalk, when he went to chase after those punks; she would not have walked away from the accident like he did. Scarlett squirmed in his lap and turned to gaze up at Dean a look of concern on her face.
"Are you ok Daddy?" She asked for the millionth time placing a kiss on his forehead. Scarlett had nearly been inconsolable after Dean was hit by the van. When Dean came to a bystander was trying to comfort her. She now refused to leave Dean alone.
"I'm fine baby girl." Dean assured, kissing Scarlett right as Chuck walked in.
"Geez Dean you look horrible." Chuck muttered his body language revealed that he felt guilty over the recent incident. Dean had Scarlett stand up before he did … keeping his distance from the other man.
"How do you know what you know?" Dean demanded moving slowly towards Chuck. "Everything you write comes true." Chuck attempted to get away; Dean grabbed him by his jacket.
"Daddy don't!" Scarlett shouted at the same time she heard a flutter of wings and Castiel appeared.
"Dean let him go." Castiel commanded in his gruff, deep voice. Dean pivoted towards the angel.
"Uncle Cas!" Scarlett cried, racing over to embrace the angel.
"This man is to be protected."
"Why?"
"He is a prophet of the Lord." Chuck took advantage of Dean being momentarily distracted by the angel and shuffled around the hunter and moved to sit behind the angel.
"You must be Castiel." Chuck addressed, Castiel inclined his head towards the man.
"It's an honor to meet you. I admire your work." Dean thought this must be the closest thing to a 'fan boy moment' Cas would ever experience.
"Wait this guy?" Dean demanded as if there were anyone else present. Castiel picked up Scarlett and then the nearest copy of Supernatural.
"SSS…ccc…ah…rrrr…c...r…o...wa." Scarlett sounded out the title of the book.
"Scarecrow." Castiel read, continuing to study the book and ignoring Dean's glare.
"Did you know about this?" Dean demanded directing his question towards Chuck.
"I might have dreamt about it." Chuck answered sheepishly.
"He is a conduit for the word of God." Castiel explained. "Someday these books will be known as the Winchester gospel." He closed the book and returned it to the table, Dean stood dumbfounded.
"You got to be kidding me." Dean and Castiel said simultaneously. Castiel looked exasperated at Dean.
"I am not … kidding… you." Chuck darted out from behind Castiel to excuse himself and run up the steps.
"Him? Really?" Dean asked baffled.
"You should have seen Luke." Castiel shrugged slightly.
"Oh I get it! Like in the Bible the different books Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. I have never heard of Chuck before." Scarlett spoke up feeling so proud of herself for being able to contribute to the conversation. Castiel turned a look of approval on his face at the little girl; he placed the girl down and patted her on the head in his way of showing affection.
"How do we get around this?" Dean questioned still reeling from this recent news.
"You don't. As so it is written, so it done." Castiel answered in his no nonsense tone; Dean however was not satisfied with this response. He scooped up Scarlett and stormed out of the house towards his car.
Dean stormed into the motel room Scarlett in tow. He was set in getting out of this town he didn't care if they were going to have to swim one way or another they were getting out. He noticed quickly the hex bags were gone.
"Where are they?" Dean demanded, Sam showed no remorse.
"I burned them." He stated matter of fact. "Look if Lilith is coming and that is only if Chuck is right."
"Chuck is a prophet." Scarlett informed her uncle.
"What?" Sam turned towards his niece. "How do you know?"
"Uncle Cas told us. Chuck is writing about us because God told him too." Sam was slowly taking in this new piece of news his niece delivered to him.
"Ok." He took in. "But I'm not leaving."
"Yes we are. We're not waiting for Lilith to come and rip you apart." Dean ordered. "You think you're strong enough to take Lilith down. You think I don't know." Sam eyes lifted towards Dean in surprise.
"I know what you have been doing. Cas told me." Dean did not want to go into detail with Scarlett present, but he knew that Sam knew that he knew.
"It's not what you think." Sam started, but Dean grabbed his bag and walked past Sam.
"I don't know what to think…but are you coming or not?" Sam looked reluctant. He stared down at Castiel when he gave Dean his answer.
"No." Sam replied. Dean closed his eyes he took both his and Scarlett's bag.
"Fine, do what you want, but I'm not going to stay here and let Scarlett be a pawn in Lilith's game and were not going to watch you possibly destroy yourself. " Dean was getting choked up over this. "Say good bye Scarlett." Dean instructed. Scarlett looked at her uncle with tears in her eyes.
"Uncle Sam you're not coming?" Scarlett started to tear up. Sam kneeled in front of the child.
"I can't Scarlett. I have to take care of something. You look after your Dad ok." Scarlett was confused she reached out and hugged her uncle. She wasn't releasing Dean had to pull her away and she started to cry for her uncle, but Sam wouldn't leave.
"Please God help, help my Uncle Sam." Scarlett prayed as Dean strapped her in. The sun was setting Lilith would be here soon, Dean had to get Scarlett away from the motel.
"You should always pray for help Scarlett." Castiel appeared suddenly beside Dean; Dean smacked his head on the car as he turned to look at the angel.
"You have to do something." Dean demanded, Castiel shook his head.
"I can't it is a prophecy." Dean got angry he closed the door on Scarlett's cries and reached for the driver's door.
"You must understand … why I can't intercede. Prophets are very special and protected. They are tethered to an archangel. Archangels are the fiercest weapon of heaven. If anything and I mean anything threatens a prophet then Heaven's greatest weapon will rain down upon it." Castiel looked up towards the sky as if someone was watching. "You have to understand why I cannot intercede." He looked back towards Dean. Dean nodded he understood just fine get Lilith and Chuck in the same room and an archangel will obliterate the threat mainly Lilith.
"I understand. Thank you Cas." Castiel nodded.
"Good luck Dean." He smiled at the hunter and quickly disappeared. Dean drove quickly over to Chuck's house. Scarlett stayed in the car while Dean 'convinced' Chuck to come to the motel room with him. Chuck sat in the front seat and looked back at Scarlett who was watching Chuck from her car seat.
"Look I will go in there, but don't let Scarlett go in do you understand?" A puzzle look crossed Dean's face.
"Why not?" Not that Dean had any intention of putting his daughter in jeopardy like that. He didn't like the idea of Scarlett and Lilith being in the same town let alone motel room. He just wanted to hear Chuck give his reason; he wanted answers to everyone being cryptic in regards to his daughter.
"Just don't ok." Chuck argued, Dean nodded, now was not the time he would get his answer later. They arrived at the motel, Dean parked in a hurry.
"Scarlett stay here. No matter what you stay in the car do you understand?" Scarlett nodded compliance a whimper escaped her lips. Dean jumped from the car, he raced around to the passenger side he pulled open the door and yanked Chuck up and out from his seat. He shoved Chuck up to the room door and kicked it open. Lilith was inside threatening Sam with a knife; Dean shoved Chuck through the door and followed right behind.
"I am the prophet Chuck!" Chuck proclaimed and the room began to shake. Lilith gazed back at Sam before she smoked out leaving the room silent and everyone staring at the dental hygienist crumbled form on the floor. Scarlett's screams for her dad could be heard from out in the parking lot. Dean raced out to get her he opened the door and she jumped into his arms holding him, her whole body shaking. Sam and Chuck came out of the room looking at the father/ daughter. Sam went back in for a moment gathered his things and they left in a hurry before the motel management could question them about the damage done to the room.
Dean never got to ask Chuck what he knew about Scarlett, he figured Chuck would not tell him anyway. He only hoped that someday soon he would. They dropped Chuck off at his house and hit the road. Hours later after Scarlett was sound asleep Sam relayed the conversation he had with Lilith to Dean.
"So that's it end it all, just as long as were dead." Dean summed up.
"Pretty much." Dean shook his head; he knew he couldn't take the demon's word.
"No mention of Scarlett though?" Dean asked, Sam thought for a moment and realized that not once had Lilith mentioned Dean's daughter.
"No she did not." Dean shifted in his seat he glanced in the rear view mirror back at his daughter to make sure she was still asleep.
"Chuck's only request was that I didn't bring Scarlett into the motel room. Chuck, Zach, Anna, Alistair, Cas it seems like we're getting half answers from everyone. It's like everyone knows some big secret about us and not sharing. I feel like a couple of middle school girls on an after school TV drama." Sam nodded the feeling was mutual.
"There is only one thing we can do." Sam finally spoke.
'What is that?"
"Win the game."
Well that is it; it is certainly long enough to hopefully appease everyone for my major gap. I'm going to start working on the next chapter, but it may be awhile before the next update work is picking back up. Please as always read /review / add me to your favorite and follows. It makes me so happy to find these when I check my email.
